Cold Ambition is a mystery/romance is book one in the Jordan James, PI Series. In her initial launching of this marvelous series Rachel Sharpe has written a wonderfully witty and compelling novel. The descriptive writing is excellent; the characters are well developed, including supportive characters.
It’s paced well, building to an breath-holding and exciting climax and HFN ending. The mystery is well thought out and timed. The family life of our female PI, and her independent nature, was well described and excellently written.
I loved the character of her “assistant” Jon and their building relationship, as well as the “first client” and romantic entanglement. The story is thoroughly enjoyable and hard to put down. The ‘bad guys’ are very easy to hate, the crime a bit predictable, but the way it was presented was fresh and completely compelling.
I look forward to more from this great new series and this marvelously talented author.
Grab a glass of your favorite beverage and get ready for a wonderful ride from Boston to New Orleans and back again! Enjoy everyone, I certainly did!

Cold Ambition is a book that has you wishing from the first page you could read faster. The story is written in first person as many detective stories are but the characters’ interactions and conversations are so well interwoven with the heroine’s that you don’t notice. These characters talk to each other which is refreshing to read.
The story is full of twists, dead ends and surprises as Jordon works the case while dealing with her family in Louisiana. Not an easy task since she is in Boston and the case takes her to New York.
Rachel Sharpe has created in her heroine Jordon James a character that has depth. Jordon has family problems, boyfriend issues, job issues, and issues in trying to solve a twenty-year-old cold case murder. The other characters that surround Jordon have their own distinctive characteristics that Jordon deals with while handling her own. There were occasions when it felt as if Jordon was whining about her problems a little too much but the plot, mystery and other characters more than made up for that small issue.

"Cold Ambition" is a pleasant read but as with many P.I. books relies rather too heavily on happenstance to work things out.
Jordan James is a qualified psychologist who cannot find work in that field so has been a waiter for the past four years. She's saved her tips and decides to become a private investigator. The reason? She watched a lot of Magnum P.I. when she was younger!
She's still looking for her first case when a cyclist, Jonathan Paul Riché, knocks her down and breaks her arm.
An older man offers assistance (remember him as he later plays an important part!), and Jonathan, appoints himself her carer and P.I. helper. And, of course, he just happens to know someone who needs a mysterious murder from twenty years ago investigated.
It's nicely done but rarely moves at anything other than a leisurely pace.
Overall it is a solid but run of the mill mystery book.

A PI first case
There had to be a first case and the book tells the story. She really does have an interesting case. There is plenty of action and a fabulous ending. I totally enjoyed the book.
