Rädd

Rate this book

Anna Fiske, a Swedish comics artist living in Norway, has created a series of books for a publisher focusing on easy to read books, intended for persons learning to read, or learning a new language.

Fiske's books each on a theme of basic emotion, such as anger, jealousy, fear and love and for all intents and purposes, picture books for adults. But the fact that Fiske is a comics artist seeps through, with comics elements such as panels, speech balloons and juxtaposed images in sequence. Thus these books roam the interesting grey area between comics and picture books, and area which I find fascinating, as a study of it often highlights the differences and thus the defining characteristics of each art form.

The books in themselves are rather short and by nature includes few words and sentences, normally only one per page. They invariably contains a positive message, self-affirming message, which is probably good for the target reader. The images are beautiful, in Fiske's distinctive, naivist and very fluent style.

This is the book about being scared, which reds almost like a self-help book about getting rid of your phobias, but ending with an affirming message about it being OK to be a bit afraid when heading out into life and all its uncertainties.
