Book about a complete jerk demanding HIS DUE, and I just don't need another Scrooge in my season.
Additionally, the writing is weird:"... which is why his father made him in charge..." MADE him in charge? PUT him in charge. And that's the very first page...!
And the author doesn't even seem to know what she's saying. How about three pages later: "Staring out at the vast land untouched by concrete or steel made him feel small and unworthy" followed ONE paragraph later by: "...this landscape whispered a challenge, a call of adventure".
You can't have it both ways, Mindel. Is it intimidating and uncomfortable, or is it exhilarating and exciting? Or do you even know? Because it sounds like words are just being spat out at the reader, to fill a page.
It'd be nice if this were a book that didn't contradict itself, came off as awkward, and wasn't about not-so-inspirational people in a 'Love, INSPIRED' book. But alas, here we are.
If you want to read a really sweet, good Savior-centric holiday book about a big-city guy stranded with a country family? Try "The Substitute Guest", but Grace Livingston Hill. It's one of my absolute favorites, and makes this nonsense look like drivel.
Another one for the cast-off pile...!
