A.C. Wilson

A Nebraska native, A.C. Wilson now lives in historic Abilene, Kansas with her husband and two boys. Always an avid reader, A.C. first fell in love with historical romances both Regency and Western. The world was a wide open place where adventures could happen even between the pages of a book. Deciding to give the characters in her head some room to breathe, A.C. started typing and hasn't looked back.

The Black Hills series books are contemporary western romances set in the iconic beauty of the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Johnson family holds true to their values of love, duty, family, and loyalty.

Broken Country novels featuring Levi and Taryn begin with Discovering Taryn. It is a "clean" young adult romance spinoff from the Black Hills Series. The family values continue as a young woman tries to find her way in life and love and a young man learns the meaning of patience and perserverence.

Was hoping for more horse related sessions in it! Especially with what the horse facility deals with - this could have been a great area to explore in the story...

An enjoyable read that looks at PTSD and the affects of men who have served for their country - really enjoyed the way two male characters and their reaction to war was explored and the different outcomes as they battled their own demons.

Struggled a bit with how quickly the main characters became involved and how intimately especially with all that they're battling with... less of the physical side of their relationship and more exploration of horses as a therapy would have made this 5 stars for me. There are a few instances also where the tense changes which is a little distracting.

This series keeps getting better and better.

I have followed Author A.C Wilson since I was gifted Black Hills Angel to review. I have a secret hankering to be a cowgirl - ride the plains, mountains on the back of a horse and reading this series is an escape into that world for me.

In this story the book features on Blake Phails, who is struggling with the death of his brother-in-arms. He is desperately choking back the guilt of not dying and now must face the emptiness of the world alone.

Seriously if you are not sobbing reading some of the stuff in this book like I was, then you have a tougher heart than mine.

I know first hand the trauma of what war does to men, and their struggle when they return home and I think this book really puts those struggles at the forefront of your mind, makes you consider how lucky we are to have the boys and girls in our armed services keeping us safe.

God I am choking up writing this! I read this book a while ago and have struggled writing the review because its a raw and emotional read for me.

This passage - well I was sobbing so hard, it still makes me tear up!
Deep, gut-wrenching sobs caused him to choke and gasp for air as he lay curled up on his side next to the freshly mounded dirt.
The depth of his grief knew no bottom and even that didn’t terrify Blake Phails as much as going through the
rest of his life without his best friend. He opened his mouth swallowing a cry of utter torment as his fingers dug into the wet earth of the grave site.
His loss of a brother-in-arms had created more chaos than two tours in Afghanistan.
It threatened to uproot the foundation he’d built in the United States Army and
cast him aside like a piece of unwanted rubbish.

Blake has never known who his father was until his mother gives him a photo, there was a date and a town in South Dakota written on the back. Hot Springs.

Blake is lost so he makes his mind up to check out the town and find out who the man is in the picture.

When he gets there, he rescues a damsel in distress, fixes her Tyre for her, he is left wanting to know her more.

There is more to Bailey than first impressions show, heaven for her is the wide open spaces on the back of her horse, Liberty. ( See why I love these books - Horses are my heaven if the world is falling around me - on the back of a horse the stress and worry fall away)

The closest I got to riding the range was in Southland NZ - wow the fun I had there mustering sheep and deer and cattle!

Bailey has been striving for her independence but her stepfather reels her back in by using her half-sister as bait. He is vicious and abusive.

She tries to be strong, but sometimes you need to let someone in that can help you win the fight.

I recommend this series wholeheartedly - whether you read this book first or in order, you will surely enjoy as Blake and Bailey take a chance on their mutual attraction. There is heartache and tears, but there is also Joy and Determination as Blake finds something to give him a reason to live on.

PS I may have received a Review copy But I #OneClicked as I want to support the Charity that Ms Wilson has picked.

The whole royalty from Secrets for Amazon preorders and February sales goes to Wounded Warriors

This will definitely be a Re- read series for me and when they are all in Paperback I will be putting in a bulk order so they can sit on my Awesome Author Bookcase.

Thank you for giving us Blakes & Baileys Story Ms Wilson Its my favourite one of the series yet.

This is a young adult contemporary romance. This is the forth book in the Black Hills Secrets series, but this can be read as a stand alone. I have not read the other books and was not lost in the story. But I now want to read the other books. I recommend this for teens and older. This story pulls at all the heart strings, it is a tearjerker. This book is very descriptive and somehow you can feel the emotions yourself. I normally am not interested in military romance but this book is wonderful. Once I started reading the story I could not put it down.

This is Blake Phails story, he is on medical leave from the military. He also just lost the only member of his "family" he had left, his best friend who was more like a brother, Tanner. Blake is lost and does not know how to live, especially outside the military. Going home is not an option, he has no place to call home. With a photo and a name of a town, Blake starts his journey. He does not know what he will find in the small town, Hot Springs, but he determined. What will be will be.

Bailey Campbell loves horses, helping others and wants so badly to have a peaceful life. The only problem is her half sister is still with her abusive dad. Bailey struggles to keep this part of her life secret, but with the chance meeting with Blake Phails, things are fixing to change. Will Blake get the answers he is looking for? Can Bailey finally get the peace she so desires.

Favorite passages:
"The depth of his grief knew no bottom and even that didn't terrify Blake Phails as much as going through the rest of his life without his best friend."
"He opened his mouth swallowing a cry of utter torment as his fingers dug into the wet earth of the gravesite." <3
"A true loss and a noble gift."
"It was a place he wanted to forget entirely but once in a while, it came out like a firefly in the dark."
"It haunted him like phantoms writhing underneath his skin."
"This was dying slowly and decaying from the inside out." <3
"Maybe not one connected by parentage, but connected from the heart."
"He lived so much inside his memories without even being able to look into the future." <3
"Her mind became a house of mirrors with not way out."
"If angels could be sinful, then Blake was undoubtedly an overdue gift from Heaven."
"Right now, they were clear and the color of the sky just before a thunderstorm rolls in."
"His tongue tasted her name once more and he loved the feel."
"So many unspoken words passed between them."
"Tomorrow was an ending to a chapter that had been too long running."

Loved it!

Bailey Campbell and Blake Phails meet by chance and again by fate. Both are struggling with pasts that refuse to let them move forward with their lives though for very different reasons.
Bailey continues to live in Hot Springs, the small town she grew up in, even though she has few friends and knows many of the residents don’t take a positive view of her or her small family. Her stepfather is abusive but she needs to be strong for her young sister Taryn. In a few more years, Bailey knew her sister would be an adult and they could make choices together on where they wanted to live, where they could be happy.

Blake was on leave from his Special Forces assignment and had no interest in returning to it. War was hell and the battles did not always end when you left the battlefield. Suffering from the biggest loss of his life, he was searching for an anchor and was hoping that might mean family in the small South Dakota town.

A full-length novel, this is the first book I’ve read by this author and the fourth book in the Black Hills series. While there are many characters, and reading the previous titles would help to understand the secondary characters better, the story works as a stand-alone as well. Love for family is a huge part of the plot – whether the family was blood or by choice. Told from alternating points of view, Blake and Bailey’s inner voices give such insight into the strong, and often, painful memories and feelings they both hold so stoically inside. I loved Blake’s immediate protectiveness and need to help Bailey and her sister. Bailey was strong in so many ways but showed her vulnerability to Blake as a measure of trust as their feelings developed. After finishing the book so many scenes are replaying again in my head. You will want to check out this novel and read them for yourself!

**A complimentary copy was provided in change for an honest review.**

The fourth in the Black Hills Series, Black Hills Secrets is a return to Hot Springs, South Dakota and several characters from the prior books: Lacey and Travis, Andy and Matt, Garrett and Rayne and Nora and Randy. This book though, while including them, focuses on Blake, a decorated veteran of the war in Afghanistan.

He is suffering from PTSD, and the pain of losing a comrade that he considered to be his brother in that war. From the very opening sentence and the very first paragraph, I was completely drawn in to his story. With just a picture of a couple and the words "Hot Springs" on the back, he finds himself in the town, seeking answers. A chance meeting at a grocery store brings a woman named Bailey Campbell into his life, along with time at the Johnson Therapy Center. Like a lot of the books in this series, theirs is a relationship that takes time to form, but once it does, they both know that the other is the one meant for them.

While I loved the romance between the two and the fact they had chemistry, what I found the most compelling thing about both Bailey and Blake is that they both have things in their lives that they are struggling to deal with. Blake and his PTSD, and Bailey with a family situation. They both serve to anchor the other, and give support when it is needed.

There were some surprises in this book, and the Secrets part of the title is fitting. What I will say is that there is one scene in particular towards the end of the book where I had a few tears that fell because of the emotion that it evoked. What I can say is that scene served to remind me of why I like this series so much. The characters all feel real and genuine, and I've grown to know them over the course of the first three books.

My rating is 5/5 platypires.

This is the best one yet of the Black Hills Series! A.C. Wilson has delivered a story that will live in your heart long after you finish reading it. With a story line that so many can relate to, it takes a lot to put into words the emotions that come along with such a powerful story. From the heartache, to the fear, to the friendships, and to the love that Blake has and finds in Black Hills Secrets, you ride every emotion with him. Bailey will tug at your heart strings as well. The whole Johnson family is amazingly written, starting with book one. This book is probably my all time favorite. Well written, with characters you will fall in love with. It has something for everyone. A little heartbreak, a little angst, a little sizzle, and a whole lot of love! Although all the books in the series can be read as stand alones, I would recommend the entire series. Each story adds to the next and you get to know all of the characters as each play a part in the next book. Fall in love with the Johnson family now, you won’t regret it! P.S. You are going to need some tissues for this one!

I was given a copy by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Blake and Bailey are both broken souls from two different situations. Fate steps in and brings them together. Together can they overcome what is plaguing them? Will love be able to make them feel whole again?

This is an emotional story, you will definitely need tissues to get through this one. The characters are so real, the storyline is amazing and you feel you are right there with them as they go through their trial and tribulations. There a few surprises in the book, but they make the story that much better. I truly enjoyed this one and can't wait for more from this author and series.

Well what a gut wrenching story losing your best friend and brother and hen having to go in search of your father. A.C. Wilson has written a story that is emotional and i feel gives true light to what emotions the serving personal who protect our countries can feel when losing a comrade/family/friend.I have got to say despite the darkness in the story there was moments of light and love. I have not read the earlier three books in the series but i would like to in the future at some point to see what they all hold. For my first foray into A.C. Wilson and her writing style and not really a reader of military romance books i found this enjoyable and a refreshing change from what i usually read.

A chance meeting, struggling with their pasts, a journey to find their future. This is a beautiful story that deals with some very hard subjects. A.C. Wilson has masterfully crafted this story. I love how she has accurately describes the symptoms of PTSD and offers explanations of dealing with it. But do not let that put you off reading this book. You will feel the loss, the sadness but you will feel the emotion of discovery of love, trust and family. You will also learn a few "secrets". Everyone from the family in the previous book will be there. DON'T FORGET: BUY THIS IN THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY AND THE PROCEEDS WILL BE DONATED TO THE WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT.

This series keeps getting better and better. From the first page I was hooked about this raw and emotional book about Blake and Bailey. This book has so many twists and turns till the very end and kept me guessing on alot of things that were eventually answered towards the end of the book. AC knows how to draw her readers in and not let go and its been that way with me since I started this series last year. So looking forward to the next book in the series and seeing more from all the couples in this series.

The best so far!!

Actually does an amazing job of bringing PTSD to light. Blake is broken. He lost his best friend and brother while serving in the military. All he has left is a picture of his mother with a man and a town written on the back. Bailey comes from a abusive home. Now she lives and works at Matt's equestrian center. While Bailey helps Blake work through his nightmares, she is thrown into her own. See if they can each be the beacon in the dark for each other!!!

This is a good read, long but good all the same! Blake has just lost his brother, friend and best friend. Tanner has been all these things to him even though they weren't blood related! He was the only family Blake had. His mom gave him a picture before she passed away that was of his father but didn't tell him his fathers name! Now Blakes on a journey that will save him, help him and change his life forever!

I received this for an honest This was a good story with lots of heart and feeling in it. This is a story of two broken people who meet by fate and circumstance. Both are trying to get away from their past and both find each other when they needed each other. I thought this was a good story with a nice story line that was done very well by the author. It was really nice to see the other characters from the other books in it as well.

Absolutely loved this book! Blake and Bailey are both very loveable, and I enjoyed getting to know both. The inclusion of the Johnson family--who I adore--as secondary characters, was fantastic. Sweet romance with a little steaminess. Highly recommend the entire Black Hills series.
