Discover the funny side of Florida with "#1 New York Times" bestselling author Carl Hiaasen in this collection of four Hoot, Flush, Scat and Chomp. "It's classic Hiaasen--laugh-out-loud Satire in a Florida setting." --"Life"
Carl Hiaasen was born and raised in Florida. After graduating from the University of Florida, he joined the Miami Herald as a general assignment reporter and went on to work for the newspaper’s weekly magazine and prize-winning investigations team. As a journalist and author, Carl has spent most of his life advocating for the protection of the Florida Everglades. He and his family live in southern Florida.
It's always interesting to read a book after having already seen the movie. No matter what, you always find yourself wondering which is better. When it came to Hoot, I find that I'm honestly in a place where I don't quite know which was better.
In a way, I've gotten rather good at determining why something might have been cut out of the movie adaptation--whether I agree with it or not--and there were many things I noticed in this book that had not made it into the movie that just made sense.
All in all, it was a pretty good book. I truly don't have many complaints. As I grew closer and closer to the end, I found myself feeling as though I just wasn't getting there fast enough. At this point in time, I am unsure whether that is because I decided to watch the movie and read the book together and that led me to compare the fast pace of the movie to the slowness the book expressed due to the extra scenes which did not make it into the film or if it is simply because the book dragged a bit.
I will say, however, that I was sorely disappointed with Mullet Fingers' true name. Here I agree wholeheartedly with the decision the filmmakers made in leaving him with just his nickname. The name he was given was just incredibly disappointing and I personally don't think it fit him well at all. It took something away from the book that I found myself missing quite a bit.
I read Hoot and Flush. Both Hoot and lush were good books. I enjoyed Hoot because it was suspenseful and it was fun to read in past times. I also liked flushed because it was a fun suspenseful book that always had you on edge and ready for what would happen next.
I’ve never learned so much about Florida’s abundant wildlife until reading Carl Hiaasen’s fun and educational middle-grade books. I have enjoyed them all immensely.
Great YA stories of adventure in Florida with bonus of environmental and social issues. Well done and funny. I learned a lot! I’m definitely recommending to my daughter to read.
Chomp was my favorite of the four and anyone who is amused/bewildered by nature or survivalist TV shows will enjoy it. Yes, these are intended to children; but they are fun escapist reading for adults as well, and a great way to bring myself back to Florida after six lovely weeks in Peru.
for all animal lovers <3 this collection is great! I totes loved hoot+ flush, which both had passionate environmentalists concerned about saving the animals =) #peta
