Dervitika is a planet of secrets where the past and present collide.
Will Ilauria survive the collision in order to bring her people out of darkness?
At the conclusion of Luminous, the Council sentenced Ilauria to an eternity imprisoned on an exile planet—little did they know that was exactly where she wanted to be. There, Ilauria makes new friends, reunites with old ones and together, they help her uncover secrets twelve thousand years old which will transform her people’s future forever. Yet the most elusive secret is shrouded in danger and it will test Ilauria in ways she could have never imagined.
Back on the Psyne home world, the Council and Atargatis vie for control of Nessa, the twelve-year-old girl who was forever changed by Psyne magic and transformed into the Vahjra Child. Adante and Shivan find their alliance is on shaky ground as they are pitted against one another in a race to see who will get to Nessa first. Whoever prevails will have access to untold magic...
While Ilauria digs deeper into the past, her human friends try their best to protect Nessa from the powerful forces converging upon her. With the sorcerer, Arman Altieri, still at large and Atargatis poised to implement a game changing power play against the Council, the stakes are higher than ever.
“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.” - Albert Einstein
Jasmine was born in Tucson, Arizona, the oldest of two children. She spent her teen years living in Phoenix, Arizona and then attended the University of Arizona in Tucson where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Creative Writing. She married and moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where her husband attended graduate school at the University of Utah. There she adopted a love for the changing seasons, snowboarding and the beauty of the mountains.
She spent several years working on a literary novel but found her heart wasn’t in it. Finally she quit her day job to write full time and embraced her life-long love of fantasy fiction. She wrote Luminous, the first novel in the Psyne series (pronounced "sign") and followed it up with the sequel, Prism, due out the summer of 2014. With a third series novel in the works and no end in sight, Jasmine will be spending a great deal of time in the Psyne universe over the next several years. When she’s not writing or spending time with her family, she loves to horseback ride, dance, make elaborate costumes just for the fun of it, and is always planning her next themed tea party.
Psyne politics. Politics are never a good thing. Make them mermaid politics, and things just got a whole lot more dangerous. This is a faster paced novel than the first but just as good. The questions that the reader was left with by Luminous are answered and the society of the Psyne is changed forever. Nothing will ever be the same in the mermaid world again. And it will have rippling effects throughout the galaxy.
At the end of Luminous, the first book in the Psyne series, I was more than reluctant to leave the world of mermaids the author so masterfully weaved and couldn’t wait to get my hands on the next book to find out what was going to happen to the characters I became so attached to. The wait between the books was worth it and I’m happy to say that Prism didn’t disappoint at all and that I, once again, read well into the morning hours because I just couldn’t put it down.
The discovery the main character made when she entered her eternal prison caught me by surprise and set the book off to follow many twists and turns as the implications of what the Psyne council decided to keep hidden became clear. Harsh realities have to be faced, old beliefs questioned and the importance of love and family re-examined. The Psyne has been through much and the battle between their coldblooded mermaid natures and their emotional and vulnerable human sides is beautifully depicted. The struggle between good and evil continues but that grey area in between became cliffhangers several times in the book.
Whereas I loved Luminous and getting to know the Psyne, Prism takes it to a whole other level and I’m now thoroughly addicted. Once again I can’t wait for the next book and am itching with impatience to get my hands on it. I just have to know what happens next! Jasmine Angell is a very special writer and her ability to weave a compelling story and taking it to the next level is very well done. I will be following her career and can’t help but insists that she write more and faster to feed my addiction …
Prism is the second installment in the Psyne series. Overall, a good read. It directly follows the events of Luminous and brings the loose ends of that story to a close. I thought it wrapped everything up nicely and in a satisfying manner.
On the negative side, I feel like it was a bit repetitive. It probably doesn’t help that I read the two books back-to-back, but I felt there was a bit too much recapping that slowed things down. However, because of that, it might be possible to read it as a standalone novel, so that might be a good thing for some.
Still, though, I’m glad to have read it, and I’m looking forward to the next installment. Because I feel like everything was wrapped up nicely, I’m not sure what the next book will bring, but I’m looking forward to finding out.
In Luminous (book one), Angell took the myth of the mermaid and turned it on its head and now she’s done it again. She moves between two worlds seamlessly, building suspense and delivering an intriguing fantasy I really enjoyed. The way she tied the title of the book into the story’s ending was genius! This fast, easy read had me reluctant to leave the world of the Psyne. Two thumbs up.
