Ballad of Broken Banners

Rate this book
Honour. Family. Duty.

Those are the words of House Baxteel and what Rígan has lived by for the entirety of her twenty-six years of life. But despite her ambition and unwavering faith in the Gods, she will never be what she longs for. Rígan dreams of her name being sung in ballads, of becoming the hero in the tales of Elrin's history. And though she has done nothing but fulfil her duty, protect her family, and honour the promise the Anointed Houses made to the Divine Triad centuries ago, she knows it's not possible. Bastards are never remembered, not even when they achieve the unfathomable.

However, soon her status will be the least of her problems. There is a rebellion brewing amongst the common folk of Elrin, and it threatens the very peace the Anointed promised to uphold. Knowing she must put aside her dreams, Rígan goes north under her father's orders. After all, her brother, the real heir of House Baxteel, has never truly faced a foe and can not be trusted to lead with the other Anointed Houses.

But things are not what they seem and soon Rígan will realize despite her bravery and righteousness, she cannot stop what has already been set into motion...she cannot stop fate.

I am so thankful I got an ARC of this book because I was hooked. This truly felt like I watching the first season of Game of Thrones - the noble houses, the political turmoil, the tension betweeen certain characters - I loved it as a higher fantasy read. Rígan as a character was interesting to follow given her tenuous status in House Baxteel and Caedel was such a question mark too (in a good way) because you really didn’t know what he or his house were up to most of the time. The distinction between the houses was very well done and you got some great dynamics between characters from all over Elrin.

I have so many questions going into the next book given that ending!

This was my first K. Godin book but most certainly won’t be my last!

WOW!! I really loved this book. The pacing was good, I really liked the characters and dialogue, nothing felt too tropey or cringey, and I thought the plot moved along well. I thought this was meant to be a standalone so I was a little surprised by the ending, but now I am so ready for book 2!!!!

I also liked that the inexperienced one was the MMC and that consent was a huge factor in their relationship.

Thank you K Godin for ARC copy!

Rigan Baxteel is a masterclass in flawed heroines. I’ve read many “imperfect” FMCs and none hit quite like this one. Not only is Rigan complex, but she is also competent. I say this because when I refer to her as “flawed” I don’t want you conjuring to mind an FMC who makes foolish choices or whose worst trait is she’s “too kind.”

Rigan Baxteel is cold, cruel, cunning, violent, and passionate. She’s ambitious and noble to duty bound to a fault.

Then there’s Caedell. Good word, CAEDELL. He’s arrogant, handsome, and protective in the best sense of the word. He’s also delightfully pathetic at times which made him incredibly compelling not just as a love interest but as a character.

The characters are the shining stars of this story. I had strong feelings for everyone introduced ranging from hatred to obsessed. In case you’re wondering, Skileer is my most hated and at the top of beloved list is our noble knight Donigan cause I’m a simp for long suffering besties.

This first installment in K Godin’s duology is so promising, I will definitely be continuing the series.

Hats off to Godin for having the courage to craft such a tragically flawed FMC and still make me root for her. That is no easy feat.

Ballad of Broken Banners was everything I want in a fantasy romance. A super strong FMC. Strange and interesting magic from the Gods. Political intrigue. Super slow burn. Found family vibes. She’s more experienced than the MMC.

Rigan is an amazing FMC who is forced to hide many secrets and put her family above all else. She is strong and powerful, yet also soft and caring.

The rest of the characters are all so engaging as well. I think it is best to just dive head first into this story without a lot of background. The ending made me want to throw my kindle across the room and if that doesn’t tell you I was invested, I don’t know what will.

This is a prequel series to Legend of the Huntress but you don’t have to read that to jump into Ballad of Broken Banners. I will be suffering until the next book comes out.

Thank you to K. Godin for the arc. All opinions are my own.

ANOTHER AMAZING READ FROM MY CANADIAN QUEEN!!
Thank you so much for entrusting me with an ARC, I am truely honoured! If it hadn’t been exam time (hey, don’t get a Masters people… it’s tough out here in these classroom seats) I would have devoured this read in one sitting!

Love the FMC and MMC!! Not giving out any spoilers, so you’ll have to find out for yourself why they’re incredible! Just know that:

1. THE TENSION!
2. HE LOVES A STRONG WOMAN (don’t we all)
3. MY HEART

The next one comes out soon right?.. ha ha… right?!?!
*she says while hyperventilating over the cliffhangeeeeeeeeer* 🤞🏼🙏🏼

I feel so lucky to have gotten an ARC of this book. Rigan is such a complex and relatable FMC, the supporting characters and world building throughout the story with the different houses of Elrin were well written also.

Love love love the dynamic between the two main characters that keeps you guessing, and while I went into this book knowing it was a tragic fantasy, the ending took me by surprise in the best way and I can’t wait to see how the story concludes in book 2.

I knew enough going into this book to know not to expect a happy ending. But I wasn't expecting it to go the way that it did. My heart was in my throat through the whole journey, and it was all I could do to not throw my phone a couple of times.

I love Rígan. She is the definition of the oldest sister with the weight of the family on her shoulders with the pathetic "prince john" of a little brother. I was honestly waiting for a scene of him sucking his thumb.

Kyla put a lot into this story, and it shows. She has my heart with her FMCs with how relatable she makes these women. If I have to wait 1000 days for the second book, I will impatiently patiently wait for it and welcome it like a kid in a candy store. I can't wait to see where she ties it in with Skylar and her story.

This one took me by surprise, and honestly - this book should be more popular. There are many fantasy books all over booksta/booktok and they’re not even that good.

This book is definitely for the eldest daughters of the family, surrounded by misogynistic men, where being enough is never possible.

Rígan is a flawed FMC, with huge heart that’s been broken too many times. She’s mentally abused by her family, raised in the toxic environment, sacrificing every day for men much lesser than her. She’s strong and stubborn, sharp-tongued, but never truly herself because that’s never allowed. She’s to be pretty and polite and to keep quiet. But when she’s needed - she must be the strongest soldier, the best warrior there is. To honor, to protect and fulfill her duty to the family. Always the bastard, never the heir.

The reason I loved this book this much - is because it’s rare to read about such complex characters. Rígan’s story is heartbreaking, and they way she overcomes all of it is something to admire. Staying silent for her whole life, and fighting other people’s battles never knowing what tomorrow will bring, never knowing if she’ll come alive out of it. I’m so sad she didn’t have a chance to break Skileer’s nose. 😩😩😩
The plot was amazing, there were no boring parts, only true entertainment. If you know me - you know I’m a sucker for political and war drama, and this one was so full of it. It was perfectly balanced.
I loved seeing Rígan in her full glory, and I hope we will see moe of her fearlessness in the next book.

The slow burn was sloooow, oh gosh it was amazing. But I don’t want to tell you anything - but be sure one particular boy will melt Rígan’s cold heart, win her over and over again. Maybe she will regret it, maybe she won’t - time will tell.

PLEASE ADD THIS TO YOUR TBR. 🫶🏼

This is one of my top books of 2025. I read on kindle with an e-arc and I will be purchasing a physical copy as soon as I can.

I love FMC Rigan. She has hardened herself because of her situation but she has a soft side you get glimpses of.

The MMC Caedell is my new book boyfriend!

But the Ending!!!!!! How long to I have to wait for the next one??????

Highly recommend!
I was blessed with a pre-release copy of this book and I am so glad I had the opportunity to read it first.

Well written storyline, incredible range of characters (both likeable and very frustrating ones) with awesome witty banter, straight forward world building, and classic tropes with fun twists and cliffhanger at the end (NO SPOILERS).

Definitely looking forward to reading the second book in this duet!

This book ruined me in the best possible way. Reading Ballad of Broken Banners felt like reliving the electric thrill of Game of Thrones season one: noble houses, backstabbing politics, slow-building character tension, but soaked in that lush, high fantasy magic. K. Godin has outdone herself.

Skileer? The devil incarnate. He's my Roman Empire — as in, I think about how much I hate him daily. I haven't hated a character this much since Joeffry (yes, that one), and I genuinely wanted to launch him into the sun. He’s despicable, cruel, manipulative — and brilliantly written. Peak villain material. Like... congrats to Kyla for crafting a character so vile that I wanted to throw my Kindle.

Now, Rìgan. She’s the definition of a complicated heroine, and I adored her for it. She’s cold, proud, and entitled — the kind of woman forged by trauma and duty, and it shows. She’s not always kind, especially to those beneath her station, but she carries the full weight of her family’s legacy on her back while her sad excuse for a brother sulks in the shadows. You’ll love her, hate her, want to shake her — but you never stop rooting for her.

Then there’s Caedell. Good lord, Caedell. Tall, deadly, grumpy, and soft for one woman? Hello, my favorite trope. He’s the kind of protective and arrogant that makes your toes curl, but also delightfully awkward and clueless when it comes to romance. His nickname might be "the Undying," but I died every time he called Rìgan “Shewolf.” The yearning? The tension? The only one room at the inn moment?! I was giggling, kicking my feet, and dying inside all at once. Kyla, you get me.

This book had everything:
THE TENSION!
THE YEARNING
MY HEART!!

The worldbuilding is rich, the lore is expanding, and the connections to Legend of the Huntress had me squealing. The political intrigue? Chef’s kiss. The slow unraveling of the world’s past? I need more. Like yesterday.

And that ending? That cliffhanger?? Listen… I knew something was coming. I had that horrible little feeling in my gut whispering, “This will hurt,” and yet I still gaslit myself into hope. Classic mistake. The twist punched me in the chest and I loved it.

This duology is labeled a tragedy, and that fact is eating me alive. There’s no happy ending here. But if Kyla plans to destroy me? I'm willingly handing over the pieces of my heart. Yes, I’m spiraling. Yes, I am begging for book two. Yes, I will be rereading Legend of the Huntress because I need more of this world. This duology is shaping up to be something absolutely unforgettable — especially knowing it’s a tragedy. But I’m ready to have my soul shattered.

Endless thanks for the ARC — I’m truly honored. If it wasn’t for exams (friendly reminder that studying for midterms during book release season is a terrible idea), I would’ve inhaled this in one sitting. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to reread Legend of the Huntress and cry over every little lore drop from Summoning of the Siren. Book two when???

I have been obsessed with K. Godin's writing from the moment she started advertising her original series The Legend of the Huntress not having the typical female lead. She wasn't traditionally beautiful, 90lbs soaking wet and short where all the men wanted her. No, she was tall and awkward and not this tiny thing. She was who I wanted to see, someone closer to me.

Now, we are stepping back in time in this world and Rigan Baxteel is everything I wanted and more again. Yes she's beautiful, but she's another "imperfect" FMC that just WORKS. She is so complex, like really all of K. Godin's characters, and the definition of a woman who showcases feminine rage because she has been spending most, if not all of her life, living in the fight mode of her fight or flight instincts. She has been living the life of emotional abuse from her father and her brother, forced to be their pawn under the guise of family loyalty. She projects coldness, cruelty, cunning, violence but also passion. For those she loves and cares for she does so with everything in her to the point of self sacrifice at every turn, duty bound to a fault.

In contrast you have Caedell. *queue swooning* He's everything you come to want in a MMC, he's cocky/arrogant, handsome, with a protective instinct of a "who did this to you" without using the quote. But on the flip side he also has his moments where he's projecting a little bit of inexperience and adorable pitifulness that makes him rounded and layered as a character.

I will say the personalities of the characters can sometimes distract you and outshine the plot that is slowly building in the background. But I think that's what makes the impact of some of the larger moments hit so well, you're so focused on the characters you get surprised when they happen.

I don't know what it says about me and my choice of reading, but I had a bit of a disquieted nagging, say it isn't true but I know deep down it is because it will hurt my heart, inkling for the surprise at the cliffhanger ((because of course there is guys)). But I still loved it and tried to gaslight myself into believing I was wrong till the end. I have been so excited to get some history to what has happened in this world, and this first installment is so incredibly promising for this duology that I can't wait to see how this directs and impacts the original series.

Keep in mind, like I have to keep reminding myself, this duology is classified as a tragedy. There is no happy ending here, but I am so ready for K. Godin to destroy my heart and leave me bawling in tears.

Thank you SO MUCH K. Godin for an ARC copy! All opinions are my own. I definitely need to pick up a physical immediately.

****4.5 "What a BANGER" Stars****

Okay, okay, okay...wow.

I'll preface this by saying I had less than zero clue what I was getting into. At the beginning of this year, as a Canadian reader/reviewer, I set out to find more Canadian authors in genres I enjoy. I stumbled on a post on SM K. posted asking about ARCs, so I'm like yes? When? LOL

So here I am, innocently picking up a fantasy book, thinking this should be fun. Oh how naive I was.

So now I'm stumped because I really want to go in depth about why I really enjoyed this one, but I REALLY, REALLY don't want to accidentally spoil this, because half the enjoyment was the twists and turns.

I guess I'll start with the lead, because she is all kinds of wild. A little nuts, a lot fierce, with a whole lots of claws. I had a love/hate relationship with Rìgan. Sometimes I was like "LADY!!" then others it was like "YES Lady!". All over the place. All kinds of messy and traumatised but I can see where the character can grow and I really want the next book now because, reasons. NO spoilers I swear!!
Throw in a compelling male lead in Caedell and it's absolutely combustible. They are evenly matched, both in intellect as well as personality and I'm so curious to see where this goes. They go together like oil and flame.

There's so much tension and unknowns. Every chapter brings us closer to chaos and more answers which lead to more questions. A world of magic and knights. A world where everything is falling apart. When Honour and Duty still matter. At least to some.

If you're of the "I enjoyed Nesta" variety of SJM fans, then this one is absolutely in your wheelhouse. I'm not saying the stories are even remotely similar, but the character type certainly is. I also enjoyed that romance wasn't the point of the plot (which was a nice surprise), but added just a little something. Especially when taking into account who Rìgan Baxteel is.

Also, the end, even though I saw it coming...GAWD! BEWARE of Cliffhanger!!

Book one of the Anointed duet.

"You are not insignificant, Rígan, you are everything, and you have been for as long as I can remember. "
-Caedell Reide

This was a first read for me from this author. Since finishing it yesterday I have now grabbed her backlist of books. And maybe even them in special edition form I happened to find. Ope. Lol. I am OBSESSED with K's writing. Seriously still reeling over this book. It definitely heads right up to top 3 for me this year!

Let's talk about BOBB... it has literally everything I want in an epic fantasy tale. And then some.
An FMC that has a sh!t family. But she must abide by what they want cause Honour, Family, Duty is the House of Baxteel's motto after all. And you can't mistake what the God's have chosen. Her growth in this book is chef's kiss. Absolutely loved her finding her damn voice. She had venom.... but not when it came to Family.
Our MMC, now he is EVERYTHING! Holy canoli I am officially still drooling over him. The way he saves her, time and time again. How he wants to, no needs to, know everything to just make her happy. Made me a puddle.
She is older and more experienced. And he is very interested in learning things. Keep in mind this is a VERY slowburn. It definitely paid off for me im the end. Give me an angst super intense slowburn with pay off. I am SOLD. So this was perfection for me personally.
Midevil, oldin' days vibes. Like joasting, sword fighting and horse travel. Its a whole vibe in that era.
Found Family.
One bed, close proximity, travel.
Creatures of the night.
Battle scenes that are so well done.
FANTASTIC side characters. Omg Donigan won me over HARD. Gwain sucks fyi lol. Just had to throw that in.

I could seriously go on and on about these characters and storyline. I don't wanna give much away. But also wanna intrigue you all to pick it up. It was a phenomenal read to say the least. Got me outta a book funk of none read in April, to now a book hangover that I can't move on from haha.

This was an absolutely epic book and is a new favourite fantasy for sure.

I loved the writing and the plot was so engaging. All I wanted to do was read. I also loved the world and all the politics, the tension between the royals, weird creatures and the gods. It was so cool and well thought out.

I ADORE Rigan so much as the FMC. She was strong and came off at times as cold and steely with a wicked tongue but I loved her. She had a lot of courage and fight in her but I also loved seeing her vulnerable moments and she was really caring of her people and family (even though they didn’t deserve it).

I was really unsure of Caedel but he really grew on me. He was kind of mysterious, had his own interesting backstory (which I’m excited to learn more about) and their relationship…omg. The word slow burn is chucked around a lot but it was a real slow burn and I really liked their development. There was definitely some hate between them and their banter was top tear. I loved when they came to respect each other and when Caedel became protective and there were sweet scenes between them too which made me swoon.

I also loved Donigan and I was rooting for him for a second but he’s a great friend to Rigan as well as Cait. I liked that there was the development of found family.

I also HATE Skileer so much I just wanted him to die the whole time.

The ending plot twist I guessed a little before it happened but I am still so shocked and betrayed. I need the next book ASAP but I’m also very upset that I found out after I read this book that this duology is a tragedy…I’m concerned.

I had the privilege to ARC read this book and these are my thoughts. This was a very well written, captivating and gripping story with just the right amount of romantic longing to make you sweat from the heat. Rigan Baxteel, our badass strong, fierce and beautiful FMC is the bastard born daughter of an Annointed Lord. She's forced to learn how to fight and battle under the disguise of being her brother, the heir. It's like if Jon Snow (GoT) was female and crossed with the premise of A Knight's Tale. However, when evil invades and the rebellion attacks, the mask comes off and the shewolf emerges. With fangs bared she attacks and fights through many dangerous situations. She's also experienced with men which often gets thrown shamefully in her face.

The love interest, the MMC, Caedell Reide is an incredible warrior, nicknamed the Undying, who is a few years younger than Rigan. His inexperience with women is such a fresh take on the whole sexual dynamics in romantasy books and his eagerness to learn had me kicking my feet in anticipation.

There are a few "touch her and 💀" moments that had me holding my breath and the "can I keep you" moment had me falling head over heels. *total Casper vibes, IYKYK*

But that ending...when I tell you that my jaw was dropped, I quite literally had to pick it up off the floor, that's how dropped it was! Woah!!

All in all, an incredible read IMO. I can't wait for book 2 cause I NEED to know what happens next!

Rígan has spent her life in the shadows. As an illegitimate daughter, she is on the fringes of power in the House Baxteel, even though her father and brother use her to further their own power. With rebellion stirring, Rígan and her brother head north with a small group to offer aid. One of the men traveling with them is Caedell, a rival of her brother's. But he is also the only one who has ever truly seen her.

Read if you like:
-Epic Fantasy with a side of Tragedy
-Dislike to Lovers
-Strong yet Flawed FMCs
-He Falls First
-She’s More Experienced
-Hurt/Comfort
-Nicknames

I adored Ballad of Broken Banners. Rígan is exactly the type of FMC I love in a fantasy novel. She's strong and defiant yet also flawed in a way that makes her seem more real, as opposed to this perfect, mythical FMC who remains untouchable throughout the novel/series. She's my type of hero.

And Caedell is also my type of love interest. Grumpy with sharp edges but soft for her. Shewolf had me swooning every time. I loved that he saw the real Rígan. And I ate up the hurt/comfort with a little sprinkle of fake relationship because oops there is only one room at the inn when the two of them were separated from the rest of the group.

I can't wait to read what happens next in the final book of the duet! Definitely recommend this one.

At chapter six I just knew that this book would be stunning, and I wasn't wrong. Ballad of Broken Banners is an epic story about family honour, palatial machinations and the FMC's journey to unravel herself from all the unwanted and undeserved duty that's put on her shoulders.

If you are searching for a high fantasy with a stronger but "flawed" leader that carries the plot by herself and breaks feminine standards with every breath she takes, don't doubt it and read this instalment. I'm not sure why the book community isn't talking about it! Although sometimes Rigan's outbursts about "I am not like the other ladies" had me rolling my eyes, I knew where she was coming from; it wasn't a pick-me comment, just her internalised trauma and ire about her situation, a highlight of her insecurities and a barrier she created to protect her feelings. And boy, she had reasons to be so bristly, as her family was trash on another level... I couldn't stand Skileer or her father, and at every passing page, I was hoping for them to eat dirt.

The characters are so well thought out; they are complex and layered, the pacing immaculate, with tension that carries through the chapters, and without spoiling anything, the ending is a true testimony of it. I was ready to pull my hair out! I can't wait to see how the story goes, but I'm sure Rígan will kick ass!

This book… I have had trouble gathering the words I want to use to review this book.

The characters were growing, the villains were arcing, and the plots were twisting! Every time I’ve sat down to write this, my mind got so jumbled with all my warring thoughts.

First of all - this was my first K Godin book, but it will definitely not be my last! I was hooked from the first page, and it has the added bonus of being from a Canadian author (as I strive to read more Canadian in 2025 and onward!). The narration and prose tickled my brain in the loveliest of ways, and I truly enjoyed the balance of full descriptions and moving the scenes along. It never felt rushed, and I ate up every scene like I’d been starving. I could hardly put it down.

Rígan is a phenomenally flawed FMC. She’s fierce, but also well aware of the short stick she’s drawn in this life. Though firstborn, which would normally bring plenty of prestige in an Anointed family in her lands, she is unfortunately a bastard. Her younger brother is the heir, but he is… well, he’s useless. Rígan is forced to use her strengths to protect her family’s honour.. and she despises it, searching out some pleasure and happiness for herself, until her heart shatters.

An impending rebellion forces the Houses from her area north to attempt and create an allyship with the Northern Houses. Here we meet the other main characters - and dang, K Godin really delivered on these folks! The clear distinction between each House and their role was quite well done, and I loved how they all interacted with one another.

Caedell, especially, poked my brain (and my loins). He’s gorgeous, he’s alluring, he’s arrogant, he’s secretive. Despite being the ultimate sexy-shaped individual, he lacked certain… experience. He ran hot and cold throughout, but eventually grew on my icy heart and now I can’t let him go.

Nothing broke me like that final line. I AM TRULY BROKEN. I SOMEHOW DIDN’T SEE IT COMING. That dang cliffhanger! I am so here for the next instalment, because I MUST know what happens!

I generously received an eARC from K Godin. My opinions are my own.

*ARC review*
This book is sooo good. Ideal fantasy romance for me.

We are following Rígan - bastard firstborn - who is forced to play her brother’s role during tournaments, battles and conflicts. Because she is good with sword and tactics and her brother is worthless and can only drink.
Girl tried to stole my heart.

In this story we’ve got political intrigues, strong and interesting characters, slowburn, found family and emotional moments. Rígan is going through some difficult times, she is trying to balance expectations and demands from her family and their abuse And her desire to be seen and understood and most importantly not judged, at the end she is forced to make some hard decisions and of course she is making mistakes, but our girl is up for a challenge and oh so ready to overcome all the obstacles on her path. Just don’t expect her to be perfect, she is harsh, cruel even with loved ones, unforgiving, ambitious and i loved everything in her.

I couldn’t stop thinking about this book, couldn’t put it down, i couldn’t read another book at the same time cause i was hooked, i was obsessed. So many questions, theories and ideas swirled in my mind, and i was not disappointed. We’ve got answers, but finale? With cliffhanger like this I’m counting days until second book is released.

ARC was provided in exchange for an honest review.

There are some authors that can captivate you with just a few words and K. Godin is definitely one of them! From the first few paragraphs, I knew that I was going to love that book and it did not disappoint!

In Ballad of Broken Banners, we follow Rígan, the bastard born of House Baxteel, as she navigates keeping up pretenses in the name of duty and honor while the rebellion against the Anointed is reaching new heights.

I've enjoyed Rígan's character a lot! I loved that she was fierce, didn't mince her words and owned up to her every decision.
I liked Caedell as well, though not initially as he was kind of an arrogant ass at first 😅 but little by little I could feel his true feelings towards Rígan and he grew on me.

That ending though, damn, it was well played! I didn't see it coming until right before the plot twist and the gasp I gusped 😱😱 I can't wait to see where this is going because it had me on the edge of my seat!

👍🏻 Rigan is believably complicated
👍🏻 I am always here for ladies who fight!
👍🏻 the political, familial, romantic
relationships are complex and engaging. There’s a lot going on and left me guessing
👍🏻 I’m interested in so many of the characters!
👍🏻 pacing was well done—especially considering how much traveling they do. This would make a great show. The natural episodic breaks would translate well.
👍🏻 the romance is interesting and I look forward to it developing more

👎🏻 while the smaller, interconnected plots are well done, the overarching plot felt weak throughout the book. Hoping the final revelation will piece together some clues that might have been left
👎🏻 there are so many clues that I am hoping are actual clues and not just unnecessary details
👎🏻 Based on how the romance was slowly set up the development didn’t follow a natural progression I expected and I think that will hurt it later.

4.5 stars (rounded up)!

I really enjoyed reading this book. What an excellent story to have been an ARC reader for! This is a fantastic high fantasy read.

This is like Game of Thrones, but if a grittier and more hardened version of LoTR's Eowyn was the star of the show. Rigan is a tough as nails flawed heroine who secretly yearns for love. Caedell is the true white night among men (.....or is he?). While this story starts off slow, the build up is worth it.

The tension, the politics, the relationships, and the secrets are what drives this story forward, and I was here for every moment of it. If you like high fantasy with a magical twist, tough as nails FMCs, and a good dose of adventure, this is a read for you.

I will absolutely be reading the next book! (That cliffhanger was DEADLY.)

I absolutely loved this book! I was fortunate enough to receive an E ARC and was immediately hooked. I can say that I finished this within a few days and I loved every bit of it.

The female lead, Rigan, is such a complex character. There are times when you love her and times when you hate her but you are undoubtedly always rooting for her throughout her struggles. Couple this with the male lead, Caedell, who always keeps you guessing, you can never predict the next twist or turn.

I loved this as a tragic, fantasy romance and definitely could not put it down. And the ending?! Safe to say, I cannot wait for the next installment. I will definitely be purchasing the physical copy and re-reading this while I wait!

THIS.BOOK.
I was hooked from the beginning. I loved everything about the book. I loved Rigan’s growth in the book. I loved her strength and confidence. I loved the banter between Rigan and Caedell. I loved Rigan’s friends and how they challenged her beliefs and actions. I actively disliked her father and brother. The story, the fantasy portion. All great.
The plot twist though?! Shocking. I just stared for a long time.
I don’t know what to do after reading this, except wait (impatiently) for the conclusion. The writing in this was great and I have added more of K Godin’s work to my TBR.

I received this book from a subscription box and though it is not something I probably would have found on my own, this book completely swept me away. From the beginning of the story I became immersed in the world- exactly the kind of fantasy I'm always chasing, where you can lose yourself completely in the setting.
Rigan was the perfect strong FMC and Caedell kept drawling me in, their relationship had me hooked the whole way through. The pacing was spot-on and the cliffhanger at the end left me desperate for book two. I love when a book leaves me buzzing with anticipation and this one did exactly that. I cannot wait for the next one!

2.5 rounded up.

This would be a book I typically DNF but I wanted to see where things went and that ending had me reeling! Didn't see it coming.

Plot? Non-existent. Nothing really moved the story forward.
Fantasy? Non-existent. This must be the least magical fantasy book I've read.
FMC? Didn't like her. I felt like she was an unlikable character even though I can see her motivations I felt that I couldn't really connect to her.
MMC? He was ok. I felt like we didn't get to really know him.

Yes, I rated this book low but I'm still going to read the next one.

OMG, I am in love with this story! The very best enemies to lovers fantasy I have read in a long time.
Granted, there are occasions when the characters forget their own arc, but it doesn't deter a true lover of tales.

All the feels! Run, don't walk to grab this title.

I would like to thank the author, K. Godin for the opportunity to read the ARC of Ballad of Broken Banners in exchange for my honest review.

OMG Rigan is an older sister trope, takes on family responsibilities, but is shit on by family. this book is everything, loving touching moments (pun intended), character growth. Morally Grey FMC. Plot twist. Found Family. Finding yourself.

Just absolutely brilliant. I cannot wait for book 2 next year, absolutely cannot wait.
