আঁখির মতন এই দেহ মোর হইত মৃত্যুহীন!"
লেখকেরা লেখেন খুব সম্ভবতঃ কোনো পড়ে থাকা কন্ঠকে প্রাণ দিতে। বইয়ের মলাটে বন্দী করে স্বাধীনতা দেন অব্যক্ত সেইসব কথাগুলোকে। যেই কথাগুলো সেদিন বাড়ির কাউকে জানতে দেবেন না বলে নীচের কলাপসিবল গেইট-টার সামনে, থামতে না চাওয়া চোখগুলোকে মুছে ঘরে ফিরেছিলেন। তারা কখনো প্রাণ দেন উচ্ছ্বসিত প্রাণের আনন্দ প্রকাশে, কখনো প্রাণ দেন এক সিংগেল মাদারকে সদ্য মাতৃত্তের স্বাদ পেয়ে ভয়ে কুঁকরে থাকায়, প্রাণ দেন অতি উচ্চাকাঙ্খি পিতার ভারে ধ্বসে যাওয়া সন্তানকে, কিংবা প্রাণ দেন এই একটু আগে আপনাকে হাসতে হাসতে পার করে গেল রাস্তায় ঘুরে বেড়ানো ওই পাগলীটাকেই।
স্বার্থকতা আসে যখন কেউ গল্প পড়তে পড়তে বইয়ের ভেতর থেকে আওয়াজ শোনেন। Voices এর লেখিকা মুনিজ মঞ্জুর পেশায় একজন শিক্ষিকা, একজন লেখিকা এবং একজন মা। তিনি মায়া বোঝেন। আগে ডেইলি স্টারের সাথে কাজ করেছেন। পড়াশোনা করেছেন ইংরেজি সাহিত্যে। তাঁর এর আগে লেখা প্রকাশিত হয়েছে বিভিন্ন নামকরা দেশি-বিদেশি পত্র পত্রিকায়। Voices মূলতঃ একটি ছোটগল্পের বই। এখানে মোট আটাশটি গল্প রয়েছে।
বলছিলাম গল্পকে প্রাণ দেয়া নিয়ে, চরিত্রকে জন্ম দেয়া নিয়ে আর ব্যক্ত করা নিয়ে। আমার ধারণা লেখিকার এই বইয়ের নামকরণের বিষয়টা এটাই। কারণ, প্রতিটা গল্পই বিভিন্ন পার্স্পেক্টিভ, বিষয় ধরে লিখা হয়েছে। এমন কিছু চরিত্রের জন্ম দেয়া হয়েছে যে তাদের গল্পও যে বলার আছে, যেটা আমরা একরকম ভুলেই গিয়েছিলাম।
বিষয়বস্তুর বৈচিত্র আর অনুভূতি প্রকাশে লেখিকা দারুণ। কিছু বিষয়ের কারণে তবুও বইটা ফিফটি-ফিফটি লেগেছে আমার কাছে।
আমি জানিনা এই বইটি কি বেশিরভাগ আপারক্লাস সোসাইটির গল্পই বলতে চেয়েছে কিনা। হতেই পারে, সেখানেও তো অসংখ্য গল্পের ছড়াছড়ি। আমি জেনেরিক মন্তব্য করতে চাচ্ছিনা। তবে আমার মনে হয়েছে প্রায় সব গল্পেই বিত্ত, পিতামাতার দ্বন্দ, ব্যাড প্যারেন্ট, উচ্চ লাইফস্টাইল ইত্যাদির উপস্থিতি ছিল। যেভাবে বেশিরভাগ ক্ষেত্রেই দেখা যায় উচ্চবিত্তদের জীবনযাত্রাকে সাধারণ মানুষের কাছে পোর্ট্রে করা হয় আরকি। সেকারণে অর্ধেক গল্পগুলোকে একই ধরণের গল্পই মনে হয়েছে । বিষয়টাকে আরও ঘোলা করতে যুক্ত হয়েছে ফার্স্ট পার্সন পয়েন্ট অফ ভিউ এ লেখা সব গল্প। তাই বোরডমে মনে হচ্ছিলো বিশেষ পার্থক্য কি আছে?
আসলে আছে। কিছু গল্প মেনশন করতে পারি আমি। যেমন...Signs of cruelty, Corners, Leftovers ইতাদি গল্পগুলো। আরও আছে। মনে নেই, একটু ফিলোসফির পদার্পণ দরকার ছিল, তাহলে মনে থাকতো। সবমিলিয়ে বইটি আমি খুব নিয়ে আমার অবস্থান মাঝামাঝি। নো এসপার ওসপার। আমি যেহেতু প্রতিদিন নিজ থেকে একটা করে গল্প পড়েছি, ভালো লাগা তো ছিলোই।

Manzur’s book, Voices, is about the different stories floating across the the city of Dhaka.
What is interesting about Manzur’s stories is how each could be viewed and reviewed differently. Each has something distinguishing to offer. The prose is powerful, gripping, and evocative. Some stories render a beautiful yet clear meaning despite their brevity. The dialogue delivery in ‘Six Yards of a Story’ has made it an interesting read. Equally interesting is ‘Ships at Night’ that shows the other side of a falling building, where the cameras have not reached as yet.
While the obscurity in some stories have rendered them engaging, this has been a cause of opacity in others. Though Manzur has added little anecdotes in her stories, some of them are rather tasteless. Similarly, the story ‘Stereotypes’ could have benefitted more had the stereotypes been pointed out more clearly.
Readers would appreciate the diverse selection of stories by Manzur. This book forms a one-time must-read.
