I won this book via Goodreads Giveaway.

I can see why this might be enticing to a younger audience. There is some neat world building-creatures, innovations, etc. However, the continuous references to other classic/popular fantasy stories is kind of tired. I don’t really like when authors recycle and try to ride on the coattails of tried and true works, personally. This would be better if it had made some small modifications to make it more of its own unique story, because the elements are all there. It would be better as a subtle nod more than a headbang, in my opinion.

The comment about the kid being as pale as a peeled potato made me laugh a lot. The comment about the Orator moving scissors into line because he’s “kind of OCD like my brother” was really reductionist and insensitive.

Ultimately, this book wasn’t for me, but it wasn’t terrible.

I got this book as a Goodreads Giveaway. It is clearly a book for upper elementary/lower middle school readers and I think kids in that age group will enjoy this much more than I did. It was a kind of video gamey Wizardey of Ozey theme and variation thingey. I did not like that the book ended with a cliff hanger. I do like books in series, but I like each book to come to an ending. Will Ana be able to save her brother? I don't care and I bet you don't find out till book 3. So, while not for me, it is reasonably well written and kids might quite like it.

It doesn't help that I just finished reading an exceptional book written for kids the same age.

*Thoughts*

Magic, Mystery, and the Multiverse, by Aurora Winter, is the first installment in the authors The Marvelous Multiverse App series. Ana Zest might look like your ordinary teen, dreaming of Hollywood stardom, but she’s anything but typical. With enigmatic violet eyes, and long white hair that hide a secret even she’s unaware of, her life takes a fantastical turn when she and her brother, Zackary, are thrust into an enchanting multiverse and find themselves in the heart of a cosmic mystery.

Chaotic mesh of influences. A little this and a little that with reference to the pandemic. The intended audience seems preteen to young teen.

Some gender stereotyping, not terrible. It does pass the bechdel test which is nice. I would like more of Ms. Winter's voice and world building.

All in all, I’m not the right audience. Nothing wrong with that. Adults wishing to give it a go may like it if they’ve also enjoyed books written by Dan Brown, Stephenie Meyer, or E.L. James. That is not to say Ms. Winter’s Multiverse is about strange rituals and odd romances. The character interactions are PG.

I received a free copy from Goodreads. This book was a little confusing at first. The book starts at the end of the story, and originally I wondered if I was missing something and there was a story that came before this one. It took a little bit to flash back to what happened in the beginning to bring the siblings to the multiverse and why the main character was imprisoned. The story was influenced a lot by The Wizard of Oz. I did like the dog Veto though. Overall, I thought the story was just ok.

Be warned—this is not so much a story, as part of a story. I understand the first volume of a series often leaves a number of unanswered questions, but this book just stops mid-story.

It’s ok. I like the idea. The writing could be better. The overuse of “Ana Banana” is enough to make me stop reading. There also seemed to be some liberalism hinted at—completely unnecessary in a kids book.

I usually like this genre. And I may read volume 2 at some point. But not now. I need something better.

Multiverse Series Starter

With references to Dr Who and The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, this novel is an introduction of a multiverse where a dictator reigns supreme, words are dangerous, and characters are lost in a different universe. Loosely (and I really mean loosely) based on The Wizard of Oz, after her PUP vehicle crashes into a different universe and lands on an evil witch, Ana and her brother must figure out who to trust while navigating in a place with different rules and ways of doing things.

I enjoyed the story and it is a fast read. This is book one in the Magic Mystery and the Multiverse series so although it does not end on a cliffhanger, there are many unresolved plot points that will hopefully come to a conclusion over the next books in the series.
