This book is a collection of short related stories about people in a little Jewish/Yiddish village in the Ukrain in the early 20th century. About their poverty, their daily lives and a lot about religious rituals. But what struck me most is that the author (who died around 1915) was unaware of the horror epoque that followed. Which made me realize that we are not used to read about Jewish communities without the association with the Shoah. The stories are sweet, friendly, nice, subtle, written with love and an eye for details.
