Fantastic. This book is the best written, most poetic novel I have ever read (which is multiple times). As I sat down to read this with my earl grey, I had no idea what the caliber of this book was. I previously was already a fan of The Witch's House, so hearing that there was a translated version as a prequel to the game, I had expectations that I was sure could never be met. I truly am a critic. For if things are not in line, books will get a visit to limbo. This tells the story about how Ellen became the possessive witch that never truly gets loved by fans of the game. But she is so well developed... so powerfully written... We see why she developed psychotic behavior, and how she meets her multitudes of hosts. Forget calling this a video game book... the overall depth of the writing is enough to rival even the most well known authors. I only wish that more people could experience what was being told... Thanks to Fummy, Ellen is now one of my favorite characters that existed throughout media. Now I truly am a dark, sadistic person. So naturally, I love the same thing inside of a character. Read this book, learn about her decent into madness and hysteria. For this book has glorious and godly powers.
If any goodreads librarian finds this review, the eBook I read of this was 395 pages. Also, I don't know why this has been listed as a manga when it is a novel. If you want the goodreads page for the manga it's here: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...
I really enjoyed this. You get to know so much more about the characters and their backstory from the video-game. I wouldn't recommend reading this before playing because I think it gives far too much away about the game's big twists. Also, if I hadn't played the game, I don't know how much enjoyment I would have got out of this as a story on its own. I don't think it stands out if read independently. This had a very visual way of being written. I could very easily see in my mind exactly how this could be adapted into an anime movie or OVA, and I think it was written with that in mind. I think that influenced some decisions about how things were described which came across a bit odd in this format.
Overall a dark little story that I would thoroughly recommend to fans of the video-game
Fantastic prequel to the video game, The Witch's House which is one of my all time favorite video games. This book gives more insights into the universe and characters. I hope we get more games or books in this universe with different Witch's since its setup to be done!
Haven't seen the anime/manga/game, let alone been aware of it. Friend said he wanted to read the Kindle variant, and suggested it. So gave it a go. The major flaws are writing related, and I'm unsure if it suffers from "lost in translation" or not. Topics and sentences repeat, and the prose is a little weak, and the parents might be a touch one-dimensional (which is why this is a 4 and not a 5). But who is enjoying this content for that? The readers are here for the story. And ooh boy, it's a doozy. Ellen has a disease (probably Epidermolysis bullosa, aka Butterfly Syndrome). Her parents are ashamed of her and display little affection, and the whole character drive of the story is Ellen wants love. After she kills her unloving parents she is taken in by a demon and turned into a witch. Her need for genuine love is warped with the perception no one will love her because her disease is repulsive. She thinks that to be loved, she must be cured, and that comes at a cost. Thus begins the true horror inside this witch's house. A very interesting premise, and the initial opening made my heart yearn for this sad, little girl. Which is good that it has the feelz, because if it didn't, it would be hard to cheer this character for as long as the book requires. She becomes an absolute unfeeling monster, so giving her an outpouring of humanity at the start helps. Overall, intriguing read. Not so much a visual novel since there are maybe 10-15 pictures in there (and one is very, very, very scary). Right length for what it needed to be, and it sets up nicely for a sequel. Would recommend to anyone who likes stories about macabre girls.
Picked this up after learning of its existence from Thatfnine's video on RPG Maker Horror Games(which was 3 days ago?). I had played "The Witch's House" many years ago and so I was all like why not read it as I was dying to learn the origin's story anyway.
This was a pretty good manga all in all. The art is cute, but the style is versatile enough to depict successfully graphic horror scenes. The story itself is horrifying and the initial build-up to the events that happen within the game was satisfying. Probably because the one who wrote the story in the manga is actually the same person who made the game.
I don't want to get much into spoiler territory about the manga, especially if you have played the game yourself, and you are set upon reading this. Honestly, I would highly recommend people who played & liked "The Witch's House" to read this as it spoils the ending, which is, by the way, the biggest and most well-done plot twist I have ever seen in my entire life (both in games and books). In case you are someone who hasn't played the game yet and you somehow by the power random searching ended up here, you should totally check it out as it is free on vgperson's website( by the way who has no affiliation with the making of the game and is just a translator) or Steam, where you can buy a remake of the game. I don't want to steer away people who know nothing about the story, but you must, unfortunately, be well-acquainted with the game in order to "get" the manga.
Was expecting something more, the plot and development felt forced to me. Anyway, I still liked some of the motifs and ideas used in this story. For example the black cat and the house in the middle of the forest, which isnt original really, but still interesting for me, as it reminds me old fairytales.
THE manga that will teach you not to trust people easily lol. Anyways, it's nice to see Ellen's backstory, can't say I really sympathize with her but at least I know the reasons why she is the way she is. The OG game fucked me up when I played it a couple of years ago, and this prequel managed to freak me out even more. Perfect horror media, play the game!
Un libro espectacular, la traducción al español es bastante mala con ciertos problemas de ortografía o de expresión, pero dejando eso de lado, es un libro que recomiendo a la mayoría de personas, sin duda alguna os sorprenderá de principio a fin
Alright. I dropped it. I read to around the middle and dropped it, because it was so... Idk, boring? Words and phrases were repeated constantly to make sure you understand that one statement that was explained pages ago. I believe it couldve been much shorter and you wouldnt lose much. I love the game, but the book was a miss for me. However, I refuse to rate it 1 star, because it does build on the original.
