About the author

Hermann was born in 1938 in Bévercé (now a part of Malmedy) in Liège Province. After studying to become a furniture maker and working as interior architect, Hermann made his debut as comic book artist in 1964 in the comics magazine Spirou with a four page story. Greg noticed his talent and offered him to work for his studio. In 1966, he began illustrating the Bernard Prince series written by Greg, published in the comic magazine Tintin periodical. In 1969, also in collaboration with Greg, he began the western series Comanche. This appeared at the same time as other western series such as Blueberry.
Hermann began writing his own stories in 1977, starting the post-apocalyptic Jeremiah series, which is still produced today. In the same period, he also made three albums of Nick, inspired by Little Nemo in Slumberland, for Spirou.[1] In 1983 he began a new series, Les Tours de Bois-Maury, which is set in the Middle Ages and is less focused on action than his other works.
Hermann has also created many non-series graphic novels sometimes together with his son Yves H. One of them, Lune de Guerre, with a story by Jean Van Hamme, was later filmed as The Wedding Party by Dominique Deruddere.[2]
Hermann is characterized by a realistic style and stories that are both somber and angry, with a sense of disillusion with regards to the human character in general, and current society more specifically.

Hermannin käsikirjoittamassa ja piirtämässä Bois-Mauryn torneissa" (Sininen jänis, 2017) ei keskiajalla ole oikein kenelläkään kivaa, mutta lukijalla sitäkin enemmän. Hyvää historiallista sarjakuvaa, joka on alun perin julkaistu jo 1980-luvulla.

Finally my first Hermann!

He drops us in the dark ages where cruel lords rule over poor peasants, where knights tourney and cathedrals are built everywhere across the god-fearing lands of Europe.

The art is what drew me to this creator and the hype I felt after seeing bits here and there was fully justified because every page in this book is beautiful. I mean, this is ART! The pastels and precise line art had me in awe page after page.

The narrative is very loose, Bois Maury is the land of Knight Aymar but this arc does little more than introduce him. Instead we focus on the young mason Germain who Aymar saves from execution midway through the book.

I felt like a time traveler seeing all this first hand as I read, I couldn’t tear myself away from the book so despite the loose storytelling, this was extremely engaging and satisfying. My one real knock against it shouldn’t be a knock at all and it’s the french used, I’m french Canadian so a lot of those old Francobelge expressions left me scratching my head from time to time.

Jee, Seinäjoen kirjaston Aikamatka-haaste suoritettu! Keskiajan reissu jäi haasteen viimeiseksi etapiksi. Oli tässä ihan näyttäviä ruutuja, mutta tarinapuoli ei säväyttänyt. Ko. sarjan luku jäänee tähän ensimmäiseen osaan.

Ritariaikaan sijoittuvaa ja varsin leppoisasti etenevää tarinankerrontaa. Kiitos kääntäjälle (Kirsi Kinnunen) mukavan vanhahtavasta puheenparresta. Oikein tarina ei pääse vauhtiin ensimmäisessä osassa, vähän tulee mieleen kuitenkin Ken Folletin Taivaan pilarit. Samanlaista eri yhteiskuntaluokkien elämää samassa maassa, jossa elämänpiirit, tavat eikä oikeastaan mikään kohtaa. Herrat ovat herroja ja narrit pysyvät narreina. Talonpoikaa kurittavat kaikki.

Three and a half stars for the good art by Hermann Huppen, not so much for the storyline, which was rather a bit simplistic (good knight vs. evil knight defending peasants). But from what I've perused, it does improve in the upcoming volumes, and the series as a whole is promising!

Luin Hermannin Bois-Mauryn tornit -sarjan kaikki kolme käännettyä albumia, eli 1. Babette, 2.Eloise de Montgri ja 3. Germain. Kolme ensimmäistä osaa kuuluvat pidempään sarjaan, joka koostuu 14 osasta, osa niistä Hermannin pojan käsikirjoittamia. Vaikka Hermannin visio keskiajasta ja sen riipaisevista ja usein sattuman oikkujen muodostamista elämänkohtaloista on todella vaikuttava, jää lukukokemus vähän vajavaiseksi, koska tähän asti on käännetty vain pieni osa kokonaisuutta. Tarjolla olevien käännösten suppeus korostuu kun Hermannin tarinan kuljetus on äärimmäisen verkkaista ja tunnelmallista, mutta sillä tavalla että eri näkökulmahenkilöiden tarinat muodostavat yhdessä vaikuttavan kokonaiskuvan keskiaikaisesta yhteiskunnasta. Tätä lukisin mielelläni lisää!

Laatusarjakuvaa ilman muuta: taitavasti piirrettyä, tarina etenee hyvin ja tuo mukaan useita henkilöitä ja kerrontalinjoja, mutta pysyy kuitenkin kasassa. Erityiskiitos on varmaan annettava myös keskiajan kuvaukselle, joka kuuleman mukaan on realistisempaa kuin yleensä keskiaikaan sijoittuvissa sarjakuvissa. Se on ehkä minulle tässä se ongelma: albumin väkivaltakuvaukset eivät innosta. Olenkin kahden vaiheilla, lainaanko sarjan seuraavan osan luettavakseni, vaikka tarina jäikin tässä aivan kesken.

Los 10 primeros tomos de esta saga representan un acercamiento imprescindible a la edad media. Hemann consigue enlazar, mediante una historia coral, un buen puñado de leyendas, temas clásicos e historias reales, con todo el sabor de una época maltratada por el tópico y la ambientación de trazo grueso. Dibujo y color totalmente apropiado.

Je débute le cycle Les Tours de Bois-Maury qui est prometteur au vu de ce premier tome. A noter que l'esthétique romane du XIe siècle est très bien respectée en plus du contexte. L'architecture mais aussi les costumes, types d'armes etc. sont bien ceux des XIe et XIIe siècles.

A arte de Hermann é sublime nos detalhes e o roteiro, uma peça digna de constar em aulas de narrativa. Há um cuidado extremo no desenvolvimento de cada personagem e apuro de reconstituição histórica que não soa como mero exibicionismo, mas como ferramenta narrativa.

Beautifully drawn, with some really good full panels that are filled to the brim with details, and a brutal showcase of life in the Middle-Ages. I like Germain's arc in this book, quite understandable and well drawn out.

Keskiaikaan sijoittuva tarina kulkee hyvin, vaikka on sekä tarinaltaan ja piirrostyyliltään hiukan vanhanaikaisen oloista. Tämä on tällaista leppoisaa vanhanajan seikkailumeininkiä.

Premier tome d'une série magnifique, tant sur le plan graphique que narratif. Ce premier volume introduit les deux héros principaux : Aymar de Bois-Maury et son écuyer Olivier.

Aymar est un chevalier errant dont les terres ont été spolié alors qu'il était enfant. Bien que n'ayant jamais vu le château de ses ancêtres, il ne cesse d'en vanter (et son écuyer plus encore) la beauté de ses tours, tours qui donnent leur nom à la série.

Chaque volume a pour titre un nom de personnage (sauf le tome 8), personnage qui a bien sûr un rôle important dans l'histoire. Il est à noter que dés ce premier tome est introduit un personnage secondaire, Germain, que l'on retrouvera tout au long de la série. Les personnages secondaires sont un des points forts de la série, car ils sont très bien campés.

Une des meilleures, si pas LA meilleure série de BD médiévale.

Hässliche Bauern und böse Ritter
Meine Vorurteile gegenüber Mittelalter-Comics wurden zu Beginn fast bestätigt: Der böse Ritter, der die arme Bauernmagd begrapscht, die dann vom armen Maurer, der sie liebt und nicht haben darf, gerettet wird... hach ja. Doch dann kriegt sich der Band ein, dreht um 180°, zeigt, dass hungernde Bauern nicht edel und gönnerhaft sein können, dass man nicht automatisch zur blonden Fee wird, wenn man in einem zugigen Schloss wohnt, dass man sich Heldentum erst mal leisten können muss, und dass man mit einer Behinderung kaum mehr einen Job findet und dann halt nehmen muss, was kommt - das ganze mit sehr beeindruckenden zeichnerischen Darstellungen des allgegenwärtigen Hungers, Leids und der Hässlichkeit einer unhygienischen Zeit. Um es mit Ovid zu sagen: "Sollen andere die gute alte Zeit loben; ich bin froh, in dieser geboren zu sein."

Very good plot, indeed. One of the most well-told stories set in the middle ages, I've ever read.
One of the best points is that it gets the essence of the barbaric, dirty, full of free violence period that was, with ragged and barefooted people strugling to survive every day that comes, insted of that old romantic cliché of brave knights, beautiful princess and honest peasants.

None of this happen here. The knights are not so chivalreous (well the protagonist is, but his actions often turn to be irresponsible), and the peasents are so vile with hunger and lack of reason and capable of killing their little pretty sister (yes, this was a barbaric period!) just for a bunch of meat she stolen.

De Hermann solo habia leido Sarajevo Tango, que me gusto bastante, tanto el dibujo como la historia, esta es una de sus series clasicas, por lo que me decidi a leerlas, espero encontrar todos los numeros. En este primer numero se presentan personajes destacando la historia de German, un joven albañil que esta enamorado de una campesina. Cuando un noble sale de caceria ve a Babette y la quiere para el, por lo que German la defiende. A pesar de ser presentacion del caballero errante Aymar de Bois-Maury trata mucho sobre la epoca y la gente en la edad media.

Serie altalenante nella narrazione e nel tratto grafico. Ambientata allépoca delle crociate e dei cavalieri segue le "avventure" del cavaliere (senza regno) di Bois maury. Per molti aspetti uno spaccato dell'epoca ma a volte un po' surreale. Alcuni episodi sono piu'affascinanti degli altri ma nell'insieme mi ha preso poco.
