Five in a Bed #1

Bringing Home Danny

Rate this book
The heart of New York City beats like never before in the new series, Five in a Bed. It is a savory chronicle of five distinct men bonded in a polyamorous relationship, involving sex, discipline, and, above all else: love. Their relationship is as unique as each individual man, but their need for acceptance and belonging is universal.

Meet Mitch and Antonio, two strong, passionate men who rule their household with a firm hand and a gentle smile.

Meet wild and hedonistic TJ, sensitive and artistic Ricky, and the pup of the litter, Danny. They desperately crave the mixture of a soft embrace and hard discipline only their tough loving Daddies can provide.

Five in a Bed is about the trials and tribulations of making a different type of family with its own special kind of love. Antonio, Mitch, TJ, Ricky, and Danny may not represent your average household, but they share the same honor, commitment, and loyalty essential for any loving home.

Mitch grew up in a family of rugged red-necked men in upstate NY where being gay was not readily accepted. But Mitch developed a hard edge and strong-minded opinions of his own. Topping 6’8” it was rare for him to find a man who could meet him eye-to-eye.

Then, he met Antonio. A light-skinned black man brought up in New Orleans, Antonio was cultured, well mannered and easygoing. He also knew what it was like to face hardships, discrimination, and loss. That gave him the ability to see both sides of any situation. A natural nurturer, he saw through Mitch's rough exterior, and found a heart of gold. Together they opened up their own gym and quickly turned it into one of the most successful fitness centers in Manhattan.

Mitch and Antonio were in a loving relationship for five blissful years before deciding to increase the size of their family. TJ, Ricky and Danny complete the union. They are an extension of Mitch’s and Antonio’s love and devotion.

TJ, the oldest of the three, was born blessed. Good looking, athletic, and spoiled as a child, he had everything his heart desired. Until he spotted two hot men enjoying a vacation in his hometown in Florida, he had never longed for anything. In his flirtatious, teasing matter, he sought them out and was determined to win them over. Underneath all of TJ's ego and pretense, Mitch and Antonio found a restless spirit seeking boundaries and a sense of purpose.

Ricky is the typical middle child of the group. Unassuming and sweet, he puts the needs of others before his own. He is beautiful inside and out. Musically gifted, his sensitivity shines when he pours his heart out through his instruments. Ricky comes to the family after being rescued from an abusive relationship. As he regains his strength, the men help him to build confidence in himself and others. He is a delicate soul with more to offer than he realizes.

Danny, the baby of the family, and insecure about being the youngest, fights the limits and control the older men put in place for his care and protection. Damaged by neglect and carrying childhood wounds of abuse, he has the most to gain from the men as he struggles to fit in and find his place among them. Danny slowly heals through their love, and as he learns and grows, they learn and grow with him.

Book 1: Bringing Home Danny flashes back to the day TJ found Danny alone at party. He was a young man living precariously on his own until TJ brought him home. A critical crossroads is reached weeks before Danny’s 18th birthday. Wanting desperately to be seen as a man and to be part of their intimate relationship, he is unable to bear being around them. Danny flees the security of their home to try and make it on his own, leaving the men to come to terms about their feelings for him and to make a decision about their future. Will they bring Danny home for good?

Quick summary of Bringing Home Danny.

Danny gets spanked all the time. When he's not getting spanked he's doing something that will bring on the spank. Even after he gets spanked he gets spanked some more just to drill it in. I get it already! It got to the point where I was ready to spank myself for purchasing this book. When I saw this book and realized it was a M/M/M/M/M I snatched it up thinking I was in for a ride. Five hot men in a bed? Sign me up! Problem was that the sexy times were ALL fade to black, with the exception of one at the very end.

Needless to say this one won't be sitting in my spank bank. Pun intended.

I’m not sure where to start with this book. It failed for me on a number of levels. I picked it up because it theoretically revolves around a five-way poly relationship and I wanted to see how the author handled the dynamics of that many people, but the dynamics as presented were pretty simplistic. Mitch and Antonio, the oldest two, the base couple and the “Daddies” of the relationship are in control. The junior members of the relationship, TJ, Ricky and Danny, are both treated and are written like children and it’s their job to obey. And get spanked a lot. And, despite their varied backgrounds, personalities, and various histories of physical and sexual abuse, everyone goes along with this.

At a big picture level, my biggest problem with the story is that it’s not well written. It’s all tell with very little ‘show’, giving you very little chance to fall into the story. You never lose track of the fact that you’re reading. The dialogue is stilted, without enough differentiation between characters; it just doesn’t read naturally. There was a lot of POV jumping. The story is also unnecessarily convoluted, flashbacks within flashbacks within flashbacks, until, by the end, I was no longer sure of the progression of events.

On a personal level, I was really bothered by a lot of the relationship dynamics. Mitch and Antonio don’t really have clear guidelines about what they expect from their subs. Any and all objection or resistance to their orders is regarded as disrespectful, with no room for discussion or compromise, and has one result: corporal punishment. Even without the histories of some of the characters, it reads as one-sided and bordering on (if not crossing the line of) abuse. This is complicated for me by the fact that TJ, Ricky and Danny are written very much as juvenile/children, which I don’t find at all hot/sexy.

I’m not saying that ageplay can’t be hot or sexy or done well, but even when not as part of sex or sexual expression, the three “kids” are written in a way that makes them seem child-like and immature. As a result, the relationship doesn’t seem like a meeting of equals, it doesn’t seem like TJ, Ricky and Danny have any real agency in this supposedly loving/nurturing relationship. I also didn’t feel like Mitch and Antonio let any of their subs know fully what they were in for and what they’d be giving up by entering the relationship. It (unrealistically, imo) never becomes a problem in the story, but there’s a lack of informed consent in the relationship that’s really problematic for me. There’s a huge difference between saying “this is a relationship that uses domestic discipline” and “this is a relationship where you’re going to give up all agency to me, plus there will be domestic discipline.” Not that Mitch or Antonio ever use such formal--or adult--language.

And the thing is, I could probably have been eased around most of the story’s issues if it had been written better. If there had been less exposition about what was happening and more SHOWING, if there was more to the characters, to make me believe in their relationship and the emotions underpinning it. If the author had actually spent the time to write the story, instead of summarizing it.

I think I could have been more okay with the story if it hadn’t been billed as a romance, but the lack of agency and consent, the lack of adulthood in the characters as presented, and the fact that the thrust of the story is about Danny going from their “son” to their lover all ruins this for me as something to find romantic. The fetishization of the spanking when specifically applied to characters who have been abused and don’t enjoy this aspect/condition of their relationship ruins it as romantic for me.

So it wasn’t a very good romance and it just wasn’t a very good book.

This is more like 3.5 but I rounded up. First thing about this book is that it is a Domestic Discipline book with no kink play in fact there is actually very little sex in it. There are alot of discipline spankings and none of them are use as sexual foreplay. To me the spankings did fit well into the story and for the most part had a purpose but unless you are into that they can get a little much. At the same time I felt this book feel into the trap I see with alot of books that have DD in it. They focus so much on the discipline part of the relationship that they forget to connect the characters with fun and loving emotional times outside of when the boy messes up. It makes it hard for me to connect and care for the characters as much as I should.

The other thing about this book that is a little strange is that Danny is sixteen when he arrives into the group. He also acts young for his age and not just in a brat way. Sucking his thumb, temper tantrums and the instance he isn't a kid. A great deal of this book revolved around Danny and how he doesn't want to be treated as a kid yet still needs structure in his life. For me this kind of made the book awkward mixing parental disciple with the DD relationship TJ shares with Antonio and Mitch. It also blurred the lines and made it hard for me to connect Antonio and Mitch as lovers instead of parents to Danny in the end. When Ricky comes into the relationship it is heartbreaking to watch what it does to Danny but I almost wish the author didn't shoot for the HEA and instead gave up heartbreak to give this more emotional impact.

On some levels I liked this story alot but it focused so very heavily on the DD that I really didn't feel the love between these guy. They didn't have those little moments of affection or even some internal mussing over, not the protective feeling or need to have a strong "Daddy", but what made these guys hot for each other. I didn't mind the lack of sex but there needs to be something there to connect these guys emotionally beyond protective instincts and the need for structure.

Another example of my pet peeve. This author (like so may others) thinks that guys wearing their shoes and socks to bed is normal behavior. She even calls them 'naked' when they've removed all other clothing but are still, obviously, socked and shod. At no time during this way-too-long book does she ever mention them coming off during a disrobing process. This is always a good tell-tale sign to me about how 'conscious' the author is about her own writing. If I'm envisioning the scene in more specific detail than she is, it's time for me to stop reading. Is she envisioning the scene she's writing about at all? If so, does she envision the characters removing their pants and underwear over their shoes and socks when getting 'naked'?....Or does she envision all her characters going around barefoot all the time so there's no need to ever mention removing footwear? If she's unconscious about these obvious details, what else is she leaving out? I rant.

Even though this book is only 350 pages, it feels much longer. I was reading the same thing over and over, whether it was the same situation repeated with different characters involved or a conflicting argument where each character had a point of view that they kept repeating ad nauseam with nothing moving the scene forward. When Danny's mother arrives, they keep saying the same things to one another over and over but nothing gets resolved. No character gains a clearer understanding of another and we don't even get to find out if the police ever show up. Whatever happened, Mitch and Antonio do a total about face and become entirely accepting of harboring a juvenile in their home without permission to do so.

Two stars because of the hot, final sex scene between the five of them, which was indeed steamy. Now, if only there had been more of that along the way, this would have all been easier to bear. I'm still wondering, however, what it feels like to have five bodies in a king sized bed along with ten shoes.

I gotta admit, when I first saw this book, and read the blurb, I thought UHHH just great, 356 pages of mainly sex...that's to many pages for porn. I like a story with porn, not a porn with story...does that make sense?

I was wrong!

At first I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of sex. The story was mostly about how Danny came into the relationship...but there was explanations on all the men and how they entered the relationship. Although Mitch and Antonio portion was way to brief. There was some relationship building.

By half way, I was wondering were the sex was.

By 3/4 of the way I was ready to scream...SOMEONE SUCK A D*CK ALREADY!

Right before I read the first real sex scene, I was outside complaining to my sister on the phone.
How is there 5 men in a bed, and NO SEX!!!
I hear a little comment from nearby..."because there's no women!"
Well DUH, if there were women, I wouldn't be reading it.

There is sex. It just takes a long time to get there.

So...Sex rant over.

The story was good. I liked their relationships.
There was a lot of spanking. To much spanking. It lost something, due to the abundance.
But overall I enjoyed the story.

The blurb really gives you the details of the story and I really did enjoy watching these five men try to navigate things. As if five men together isn't enough of a challenge this is a Domestic Discipline relationship with Mitch and Antonio as the "daddies". It starts off in present time, then flashes back to cover the year and a half from when TJ brings 16 (and a half!) year old Danny home to Mitch and Antonio, which includes Ricky joining their family. (I want to be clear that there are no sexual overtures or relationship with Danny when he was a minor other than some kissing between him and TJ when they first meet.) Danny has been on his own for over a year, his mother was neglectful and there is some sort of abuse in his past. He often acts immaturely and is clearly in need of discipline, structure and counseling.

Everyone makes a lot of mistakes in this book and more often then not I found myself asking if the men really took the time to let Danny know what he was in for and have him clearly understand how the relationships in the house work. Even at the end of the story, when Danny is brought into the foursome, I'm still not sure he understands the dynamics and what is expected of both sides in the domestic discipline that is the basis of their lives.

I did have some trouble getting used to the writing style, and there were some things that I was told that I would have liked to see play out (the book would definitely benefit from some editing) but I am now invested in the relationship. This is a first book in a continuing story line so not everything is resolved and some things are just beginning. I am really looking forward to seeing how Danny responds to his new role and see if the other men, especially Mitch can actually accept him as an equal adult partner going forward.

Ahhh, I wanted to love this book so much. It has some of my favorite erotic romance/m-m ingredients such as ménage, polyamorous mm, dom, discipline, and a young, lost hero.

I was so disappointed when the story ended where it did. Then there's the fact how bad they messed up with Danny. And of course the fact of how much they spanked him rather than reach out to him. He's like an adopted child rather than an equal partner. There's plenty moments where I hated how they didn't notice his downfall. The way they brought Ricky into their relationship without thinking of Danny irked me. Antonio and Micah treated the other two so differently. I didn't feel no connection to them and didn't like them much.

I will however read another one of what I think is going to be a series.

I love menage stories, even though the difficulties to maintain a stable and equitable polyamorous relationship are beyond my imagination. Bringing Home Danny was an unexpected surprise, though. As a general rule most of the menage books I know relate to three persons... but five men loving each other and living together in a domestic discipline relationship? What can I say? I was curious how M.A. Blisher would approach the task.

Well, I won’t recap the blurb, the quite detailed synapsis leaves no question unanswered. As soon as you start reading the book you can just plow into the story and enjoy it... if you don’t mind the discipline aka the spankings. Those spankings have nothing to do with sexual stimulation and they aren’t meant to arouse the poor sod who is the recipient. If one of the three younger guys (TJ, Ricky or Danny) misbehave they get spanked… or paddled. Either Daddy Mitch or Daddy Antonio will do the deed. Hard.

If you’ve read Gillibran Brown’s diaries you know the drill. Somehow the concept of Bringing Home Danny resembles Gilli’s adventures but it’s entirely different as well. I guess no one is like our Gilli, right? :)

When Danny comes into the home of Mitch and Antonio he’s still a minor and the older guys do everything in their power to help the neglected boy. They care for him and discipline him if necessary, and it’s necessary... regularly. Yes, at first he is more an adopted child than an equal partner but over the course of time the neglected boy grows up to a confident young man. Honestly, I would have loved to put him over my own knee more than a few times throughout the book.

If you are looking for hot kinky sex or bdsm you won’t find it here, there’s very little sex in the book. But those five guys love each other and it's beautiful to watch how they manage to build a unique family by living in a loving domestic discipline relationship. If you are open for this experience, go for it. I fell in love with the guys and can’t wait for the follow up.

I wasn't gong to leave a review because I zoomed through book 1 and 2 but now that I'm done with book 3 I went and was looking to see what other people had to say in reviews and I couldn't believe how some people interpreted the relationship.

This was not abuse at all!!!

Yeah the book opens up with Danny getting spanked and punished but you kind of don't find out until later books about what was going on with Danny at the time and how difficult of a time he's having. I don't want to give anything away by saying what happened with Danny but I will say that it takes something special for me to get heartbroken reading a book and man I just wanted to hug Danny. Especially once Ricky came into the picture and Danny was so obviously heartbroken, it was hard to read and I don't think I've ever wanted to hug a character so bad in my life.

Overall this series is a rollercoaster of heartbreak and so, so, sooo much love between these 5 men. It's not smut and quit frankly the author uses words like "sex organ" or "sperm-producer" for penis and prostate, trust me authors when I say you don't always have to use weird and uncomfortable words, the originals like "cock, dick or even pecker" are much better than what this author uses throughout the series. But after 3 books that's all I can complain about so that in itself is pretty impressive.

This was such a different read from what I anticipated. It was better! If your looking for just sex, BDSM, or romance, you wont find that here. This novel has the elements of the whole story - how these five men came together to build a special family of their own. You will feel the trials and tribulations real people have in daily life occurrences. The sex and discipline is one fabulous aspect to this family. The raw emotions and thoughts of each character are a huge factor as well. I cant wait for book two!

Really sweet daddy/boy dynamics. My favorite part was the first quarter, before it went to the flashback. That was actually a little confusing for me, b/c it was flashing back and forth for a while, then it never flashed back to the present. I would have liked hearing more about Danny's issues, but I really like the dynamics of how they handled him.

Not sure I would necessarily recommend this book, but it wasn't horrible.

Really enjoyed this once i got used to the writing style.
Not what u would expect from a menage plus extras!!
Emotional writing and not much sex.
The sex came at the right time and was well written. Was proper feeling and emotion behind it. It wasnt just for the sake of writing about it as it was a good book without it.
Cant wait for the next installment

Despite the reviews i really was hoping that this would be good, but jesus! Granted im not the best educated in BDSM and daddy/boy play BUT!!!! I do know it is supposed to be consensual and have appropriate aftercare. They beat them sometimes too much with no aftercare and it sometimes seemed a bit abusive in my opinion. the consensual aspect is dubious. danny 'agrees' to the rules but the majority of this book happened BEFORE he became part of their relationship sexually. Granted, i guess spanking can be done in a relationship without a sexual aspect but the kid was a KID, 16 when they met. Was he the biggest brat you'd ever meet??? YES. He definitely deserved all the spankings, but it was still weird. You have a strange kid living in your house and you spank him as simply a child with no sexual aspect. Idk, you just dont hear about that or read about it at all. Danny was the most annoying character i've ever read. He was self destructive and borderline mentally challenged. And most importantly, the older MC's claim they only see him as a child (which they should cuz he's especially immature) but then five seconds later they invite him into their bed. This boy sucks his thumb and has emotional outbursts every five seconds. I will never see him as an adult or adult enough to make his own decisions, especially since every decision he makes himself is WRONG. he makes the worst decisions. I know that he never got the love he needed, but he needed to be let go. Put him in a shelter or the system cuz he is too immature, disrespectful, rude, and selfish person i've ever read about and i see no saving him. Perhaps if he matured on his own for multiple years, but he currently is horrible. Every MC other than Danny had their good points, but this book focused on Danny sooo.... I wont be reading the rest of the books in the series. I really liked the idea of the book but it just didnt deliver accurately, appropriately, or successfully.

So disappointed in this recommended story

This felt like it was written by a high school student. A good writer for a high school student, but not someone with enough command of the English language to elicit emotional responses from the reader. I bought this book due to some high praise recommendations in a Facebook group. I was surprised to find a story that switches perspectives within the same paragraph, makes no move to create complex sentences that add depth and bring the reader into a scene with adjectives, and frankly, uses clinical words like penis that are extremely jarring to read in what I guess was supposed to be a love scene but read like stereo instructions.

I honestly don’t know how this book has any positive reviews. The two heads of the family just threaten to spank everyone—and not the fun kind. The middle bottom is a smartass brat, the next is a weeklong pushover, and the youngest is SOOOOO young (16) that it’s almost gross. Why the tops want the youngest when all they do is treat him like the annoying, disrespectful kid he is, I have no idea.

There are no steamy sex scenes in this story. There’s a lot of kiss then jump to describing in one sentence how cuddly they are before a time jump. The last scene in the book, where the five of them get together reads like my conservative dad explaining sex works with clinical terms, no sexy feelings, and a sense of everyone would rather be somewhere other than right here, right now.

Honestly, I can’t believe I paid for this book, and unfortunately bought the next one too. I’ll be asking Amazon for a refund of both books.

The writing gets no better than the preview so try that if you don’t like the writing then skip this very expensive book; if you do, great, enjoy.

So I don’t normally read MM books without a F mixed in. And 5 men, how are you going to keep them all straight? 😉 I mean in reverse harem, the men’s personalities often just run together and it’s hard to keep them straight. But not in this series, and that’s really how I’m reviewing this.
I read all six books in a long weekend. I just loved the relationship dynamics, the different men/guys. They are all distinct people with specific roles in the family. This first book is low on sex, but that ramps up in subsequent books. But if you are looking for erotica, that is not this series. Yes, there is that element, but it is also heavy on the story. And that is what I really loved about all these books.
If you like your books heavy on story, angst, also with DD, and some sexy time with hot men who have a daddy/boy dynamic, then I highly recommend this series.

This book have been lingering in my head on and off for months and I finally gave in to curiosity. More than two in a relationship isn't always something I choose to read about but it seems the more the merrier.

I liked the different personalities of the men and how they worked together. The start is somewhat confusing as I didn't know their relationship yet and who they were

Tj's love for Danny is adorable, even when he tries to keep it strictly brotherly because of his young age.

Everything Danny and the men went through before they became what they are kept me in the book, mostly Danny and his struggles with keeping to expectations and boundaries.
And his initial heartbreak and feeling of betrayal when he thought he could never have what he yearned for, was heartbreaking.

I didn't need the sexual content as the story wasn't about that, it was about the start of everything.

Not what I expected.

The daddy calling and the spanking was a little weird to start with but the connection between the five is special and what they all need. I found myself not wanting to put this one down. The plot line was enjoyable and you’re instantly dragged into the mens’ lives. This one is mainly about Danny, the youngest of the five.

While this gay polyamory tale is an interesting story with interesting characters, the actual execution is seriously flawed. Most particularly, there are endless erratic and needless jumps in point-of-view character, which is made even worse by extensive amounts of telling rather than showing.

DNF at 60%. Even though the writing truly is basic and is a ton of telling not showing, I kept pushing through because I love DD and polyamory. However, I just couldn't do it anymore. I really felt no connection to these characters whatsoever.

I was drawn to this book because it was MMMMM. I love MM and ménage so it seemed perfect.
First, I am going to say I felt it was a very well written book giving a good story and insight into the 'boys'' background. It starts of with the established couple Mitch and Antonio and over time they add TJ, Danny and Ricky to their family.
Danny is brought back to NY by TJ, and for the 2 years between 16 and 18, Danny, although a member of the household is very much a guest. All that changes on the night of his 18th birthday when he decides he wants to become a partner.
There is very little sex in this book, most of it coming towards the end of the book, as Danny becomes a man and is made love to by his 4 men.
The only thing I did not like about this story was that Mitch and Antonio believed in spanking as a punishment ( not in a sexual way) and after the punishment spankings, the boys ( with the exception of Danny were all over 20 ) were made to stand in the corner for the same amount of minutes as their age and contemplate why they were punished. There was rather a lot of spanking in the book and after a while, it got too much.
I understand that this is book 1 in the series and in the reviews that I have read, a lot of other readers have mentioned too much spanking so I hope the author takes this into account in further instalments. I would also like to see how the relationship between Mitch and Antonio grew.

If you want a porny title, this one isn't it.
I, for one, appreciate that. The challenges of writing the history, back story and character development of FIVE people had to be challenging. YES, it was at times EXHAUSTING, so without a lot of sex to pull you through, you have to do the work, and it is WORK. So this isn't a nice little escape book. Having said that, it was very well written and nicely done.

As to the power exchange in the book, I think the dominants in the relationship were a little off balance and unfair. And I think that was important, although it made me want to stop reading a couple of times, I think it was important to see this family struggle not only with each other, but themselves. The underlying message being, relationships take work. relationships with 5 guys in them, that's 5 times the work and people, all people, even dominant alpha guys... they fuck up too.

The problem is, it's very hard to remain empathetic with Danny, when you want to throttle him along with them. Although I did have a hard time with that entire aspect, considering Danny wasn't ina relationship with them until the very end, it makes the nature of his submission weird to me. It's written in a way that you understand it's for his own good as a teenage boy, but at the same time, it's just weird for me.
