As Daddy and his little doodlebug snack on potoodle chips, padoodle their canoe, and count firefloodles, they savor the special joys of doing the things they love -- together Bruce Degen's inventive rhyme and lushly colored paintings are perfect for fans of his classics Jamberry and Sailaway Home. Just in time for Father's Day, this fanciful storyoodle will entrance young doodlebugs everywhere.
Bruce Degen was an American illustrator and writer with over forty children's books to his credit. He may be known best for illustrating The Magic School Bus, a picture book series written by Joanna Cole. He collaborated with writers Nancy White Carlstrom, on the Jesse Bear books, and Jane Yolen, on the Commander Toad series. He wrote self-illustrated Jamberry, Daddy Is a Doodlebug, and Shirley's Wonderful Baby.
Nice little picture book from Degen, as I continue to work through his bibliography. This one is the relationship between father and child, Daddy is X and so am I etc. It is heartwarming to see the promotion of a positive relationship between father and child.
This book is about a father and a son. The story is narrated by the little boy. It tells about the different things doodlebugs do together. Each activity is what we as humans do as well but with an –oddle added to it.
Activity: This is directed towards younger level grades. I would read them this book and give them a worksheet. At the top would be an open box for them to draw a picture and under I would have a blank line with the question: What would you do if you were a Doodlebug? The students will write a sentence about what they would do and draw a picture. I would help them change the word into a doodlebug word at the end and we would hang these up on the bulletin board.
This cute Daddy-and-son pair of doodlebugs seem to have stepped off the pages of early Spider magazine, with rounded outlines similar to the Maurice Sendak and Daniel Kirk classics. Father and son do many things together, and enjoy playing with words in a way that endeared them to my five-going-on-six language fanatic. Parental recitation may require a little pre-reading of some of the made-up words, but the daddy-and-me warm fuzzies are worth it.
A delightful little read with my daughter. I don't know many children's books that feature daddy-child time, and this was a real pleasure -- especially when she finishes with, "And I'm a doodlebug too!"
Funny story about a bug and his father where every word has "oodlebug" added to it. A young doodlebug describes how he and his father are alike and the things they enjoy doing together.
