Mercenary Kate Daniels must risk all to protect everything she holds dear in this epic, can't-miss entry in the thrilling #1 New York Times bestselling urban-fantasy series.
Kate has come a long way from her origins as a loner taking care of paranormal problems in post-Shift Atlanta. She's made friends and enemies. She's found love and started a family with Curran Lennart, the former Beast Lord. But her magic is too strong for the power players of the world to let her be.
Kate and her father, Roland, currently have an uneasy truce, but when he starts testing her defenses again, she knows that sooner or later a confrontation is inevitable. The Witch Oracle has begun seeing visions of blood, fire, and human bones. And when a mysterious box is delivered to Kate's doorstep, a threat of war from the ancient enemy who nearly destroyed her family, she knows her time is up.
Kate Daniels sees no other choice but to combine forces with the unlikeliest of allies. She knows betrayal is inevitable. She knows she may not survive the coming battle. But she has to try.
For her child.
For Atlanta.
For the world.
Adapted from the novel and produced with a full cast of actors, immersive sound effects and cinematic music!
Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)
Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Oregon with their two children, three dogs and a cat. They have co-authored two series, the bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and romantic urban fantasy of The Edge.
✅ Characters ✅ Pace and action ✅ Plot ✅ World-building and magic ✅ Hugh making a comeback ✅ Family and found family ❗️❗️Trigger warnings: deaths and mild gore ❗️❗️I recommend reading Iron and Magic (Hugh’s book) before this one
4.5 stars
This book picks up about 2 years after the end of Magic Binds. Kate’s boy is now 13 months old, and after a year of things being as normal as they can be for Kate and Curran, the threat of Roland surfaces again, along with a new enemy wanting to take over Atlanta and enslave its inhabitants.
Everything is nicely wrapped up. All the main plot lines are resolved, and the series could end here without any remaining questions or frustrations. However, I already know that there are more books in this universe. This book was great overall, but I have to say that the last 10% felt a little rushed. I was at the 85% mark, and wondering how everything could be resolved in the few chapters left. It was resolved, and it was done well, but slightly rushed.
Seeing Kate act as a mother was cute and wholesome. She is still a badass, even more than before, because she turns into a mean mama bear whenever someone threatens her son, but seeing her freak out for the tiniest thing was funny and made her more relatable. It showed that she is strong and fierce, but she is also human and has unjustified panic attacks about her son falling to the ground while playing, just like every new mom.
Conlan is the cutest. I don’t have much to say about him besides that. I love the way he is written, and how he affects Kate and her dynamic with Curran, and listening to him growl in the audiobook was adorable.
Kate and Curran continue to be an awesome couple. I’ve said it before, Curran is not my favorite love interest, but he fits so well with Kate, it’s impossible not to love them and to enjoy how strong they are together. They complete each other well, and they still have that witty banter and sexual tension between them that I enjoyed from the first book. The only thing that I liked less was how they both kept secrets from each other. Sure, it was all to save each other, and they had the best of intentions. Still, I would think that after everything they went through, they would trust each other enough to sit down and talk about their crazy plans instead of acting in secret and springing it on the other and giving them a heart attack while doing so.
Hugh D’Ambray is part of the adventure, once again. I highly recommend reading his book (Iron and Magic) before reading this one. You can still understand what happened to him since Roland shunned him, without reading his book, but everything will make much more sense if you take the time to read his spinoff.
While this book marks the end of the arc-plot between Kate and Roland, I know there are more books in this universe, centering around Hugh, Julie, and maybe even Kate, too. I am happy to know I have more adventures to read with those characters, but also happy that this big chapter has ended; otherwise, I fear it would have dragged on for too long. I am also really excited to read more about Julie. She has grown into a smart and fierce young woman, and I know I will love reading more about her.
Reliving this world for the last two months has been one hell of an epic journey. I both can't believe it's over and am so glad it's over. I need a nap.
What an ending. And yet IA, as always, leaves us open for more -- which they've since provided, too! With more still ongoing.
Main highlights in this one for me were Conlan (seriously the cutest) and the return of Hugh. I've always been trash for him and right now I have to restrain myself from diving into his story. And also Julie's. And the novellas.. arg, this world is (these authors are) my crack. Must resist.
Can't recommend this series enough and the Graphic Audio experience is such a time.
I loved the Kate Daniels series but it is second to Innkeeper's Chronicles, which is my favorite.
I enjoyed listening to Kate and his furiness Curran. I loved the side characters too. It pulled all the emotions out of me, laughing, crying for lost friends, raging with Kate. Why did I wait so long to start Ilona Andrews books?
I love the grahicaudio productions too, there are good narrators, good music and so on.
Basic Plot: A dragon seeks to subjugate Atlanta, and Kate seeks to stop both him and her father.
This book is pretty epic in written form, and getting to hear the battles with bagpipes playing and battle noises in the background, along with all of the voice acting and other effects is just amazing. It's immersive enough to make me want to put down my projects and just listen- exist in the moment along with the characters- which is truly an impressive feat. This was a fantastic conclusion to the series. Granted, this really isn't the end, because the Wilmington novellas are going to be adapted, but still. This one can just sit in the back of the brain with the amazing acting and overall production.
Both happy and sad to see the series end. It was amazing though. Amaaazing. Nora Sofyan is such a fantastic voice actor, I had to stop so many times what I was doing to just listen. 10000% recommend this series!
I'm sorry to see this end but I'm happy that the Wilmington Years will be getting the dramatized treatment! This series has been my lifeline for many years now. I'm always rereading or listening to it again and again. I'm pretty sure if they did another edition of this series, I'm going all in.
Amazing! I kept rewinding it to listen again. All my favorite characters, plus toddler Conlin!! Absolutely love this series and the Graphic Audio adaptations take it to the next level!
Words cannot express how much I love Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series. It's become an annual read and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this Graphic Audio dramatized reread. They did an exceptional job with both narration and soundtrack. Here's hoping they add Blood Heir, Gunmetal Magic, and Iron and Magic to their schedule. I seriously need them all in my life.
Second review: I'm feeling kinda sad right now. Why? Because I just completed my Kate Daniels reread and we aren't getting anything new in the world for quite awhile. It's my favorite series and even after multiple rereads, I still love it and look forward to damn near everything in the Kate Daniels world.
I know we're getting Julie's book, Blood Heir, early 2021. Considering the fact that we were told a couple years ago that we would not be getting anything from Julie, I've been feeling like this. A lot. Here's hoping we get something from both Hugh and Roman in the near future.
Original review: I finished Magic Triumphs right before the Ilona Andrews' event in Lexington last night, which I was very thankful for despite the fact that there weren't any big spoilers in the Q&A. I just like to avoid spoilers at all costs, especially when it's a beloved book series and just happens to be the final book in the series as well.
Magic Triumphs is a hard book to review because there is soooo much stuff that happens and I don't want to give any of it away. Just know that my bestie had an ARC and had already read the book, so when I would get to certain points in the book, I would text her. At least 4 or 5 times, the text read nothing more than "Holy. Frakkin. Shit!! 🤯😲". In the past, I've mentioned how much I loathe predictability. I had no clue what was going to happen at any given time in Magic Triumphs. Hence, the numerous texts and amazed emojis.
To keep this spoiler free, I will just tell you what I told Ilona and Gordon last night. As someone who has been a fan of this series for many years, it felt like the perfect conclusion to Kate and Curran's story. There was mention that many people are not pleased because they expected and/or wanted certain things, but as one that loathes predictability with a fiery passion, I thought it was bloody brilliant. Between Baby Badass, the complete shock regarding Curran, Kate in all of her incredibly-powerful-and-murderous-mama glory, the continuation of Hugh's redemption arc, and the amazing ending, Magic Triumphs was EPIC!
The epilogue was quite the doozy and I was really, really hoping that we'd get something from Derek and Julie in the future. Sadly, there are no plans for that at this point. Apparently, Ilona and Gordan have gotten a lot of negative feedback regarding Julie. People don't like her. At. All. Because Julie and Derek have ties and Magic Stars, Grey Wolf #1, felt like the start of their story, I thought they'd build on that. Kinda hard to build on something when the "fans" bitch about one of the main characters. I don't get the Julie hate. I really, really don't. I would have loved to have had a series featuring her and Derek, especially now that's she's a young adult. On that note, this is why we can't have nice things.
Edit 09/05/18: So, there's an update. The Andrews' have a new blog post and answered a few burning questions about things that took place during Magic Triumps and they are now stating that the Julie series is "on hold". I think it's safe to assume questions were asked about Derek and Julie at every event for Magic Triumphs and they feel that there are enough people that want it. I'll take "on hold" over no any frakkin day.
Well, I’ve come to the end. The ride remained enjoyable and engaging until the last, although it did not end on the highest note of the series for me. A solid 3.5 stars for me, and if I like the eventual reread enough it may get bumped up to a 3.75 or a 4.
Pros: The writing remained hilarious. The graphic audio brought all the characters to life and made the dialogue and witty moments laugh out loud funny like always.
Kate’s baby and early motherhood fears felt so relatable, and the baby escapades were hilarious.
I enjoyed getting to see so many characters back for a last hurrah. I loved that we got to see more of factions we didn’t see in the rest of the series like the mage college. It kept the world building alive.
The adventure was engaging and I enjoyed watching Kate handle another mysterious catastrophe.
The Middling: I loved the ending for Roland. He’d been the big bad for the entire series, and I appreciated that they didn’t give him a redemption arc in the final moments. He remained who he was throughout. Unfortunately, I didn’t love that the solution felt random and coincidental when I think they could have schemed their way to a similar end with other tools at their disposal.
The Cons: This book felt a bit like the one about the Lighthouse keepers.. good, but slightly out of left field and off topic for what the actual end game was. I wish that the plot points priorities were reversed… Roland should have been a main point instead of the side one and the big bad should have been a side quest instead. As it was, when it came to the end, it felt like the big bad was instead a rather large, convenient setup for giving Roland the perfect ending. I wish there had been more time to set up this final threat so that it felt more natural when everything fell into place. It’s hard to create a massive threat and have it not feel cheapened when it’s disposed of in one go in one book.
They only really encounter the big bad once. To my earlier point, that means that they have one shot to dispatch him. Given the hype and buildup around this particular big bad one would think our band of heroes would take at least one serious beat down. Instead the stakes raise continually but it feels like they never really fail.
Content Notes: There is one explicit sex scene that i easily skipped over (it wasn’t sudden or random, so I knew I’d need to skip), and a few other closed door scenes.

Heather's Notes I found I had forgotten quite a bit of this story. I don't think I ever did a full reread once all the books were out. Still, I like the books better, while it is enjoyable to listen to the stories and get pulled into the world, I still feel my head does a better job.
It cracks me up how Kate would just hand the baby to random people, like Nick, who didn't even like her. And these people were acting like it was normal, starting to feed the baby.
I'd forgotten how fast the issue with her father was resolved and how almost everything was solved satisfactorily. After listening to this, I am not quite sure how far Jim would've betrayed Curran. A bit disappointed with Robert, actually. I thought he'd liked her enough to try to fight for her. Kate quickly forgave Hugh, which I could see, but it was a bit surprising that Curran seemed to go along with it, considering how much he'd still go after Saiman. Raphael and Ascanio were also a bit disappointing. Raphael for seemingly more concerned about business than his and Andrea's loyalty to Kate and Curran. And Ascanio for not even trying to tell Kate himself, after what she had done for him. It feels that Kate's previous enemies and frenemies were a lot more loyal than her supposed friends. Clan Heavy, Clan Wolf, Erra, Hugh, Roman, Nick, Ghastek.
It's been a long journey with Kate Daniels, I've gotten to know all the characters and the massive world building the authors have created.
But all things must come to an end, and it's good that it has.
Today books and movies and video games go on for what seems to be endless, without an end to a major story line nothing has real value. For this Magic series I'm happy that it finished the way it did, honestly I didn't see the ending plot coming, it wasn't rushed, it wasn't Game of Throne's BS, it was thought out planned and executed at the last minute with perfection.
Good wins over evil, but it comes with costs. Either personal or political, or otherwise. To win costs something.
Sure the series can continue they left that open, but I hope they don't. Spinoff's are OK and I think there is one, but this story needs to end. Kate did her job, and did it well, and is now reaping the benefits of it.
It's always hard to close a book on characters and the worlds that books bring us, but at least I can look back on it and know it was well worth it.
Task 21: 115. Read 8 books with an average rating over 4.0 AND over 250 reviews. Book: Magic Triumphs by Ilona Andrews Pages: 352 Pages Date Read: 11/17 How it qualifies: 4.56 rating and 3,217 reviews Rating: 5 Star Review: This is my all time favorite series so going back and listening to all the graphic novels of this series has been fun. I feel like they found the perfect voices (especially Curran). I loved Conlan and I LOVED the scenes between Kate and Hugh. I just never get tired of this series and I'm sure when the second Hugh book finally comes out I will do another reread of Kate's series and the first Hugh book.
Magic Triumphs Dramatized Adaptation Yes, I've read/listened to this book numerous times before but not this newly released dramatized adaptation. It's wonderful. And fun. The director cast the characters perfectly. And this is a great book to end the original series on. The authors tie up the threads while cutting others loose to extend out into the wider world for additional stories. I'm glad that Grahpic Audio is contracting for the rest of the Kate world books.
For now some notes: - I finished this so fast! - graphic audio did cut out some bits that were a bit unnecessary to listen to. - Glad I am a fast enough reader to keep up with the tandem reading. - Curran was somewhat tolerable in this one - Oh Julie - maybe my favourite format to read this in - want some nice hardcovers for this series that is not hundreds of euros for just one book… - I stayed up late and woke up early to keep reading this. Such a long that since that happened. Nice start of the day!
No summary here. My opinion only: Having read this series several times (obviously I like it a lot), listening to GraphicAudio manages to delight me completely. These well-known characters take on even more depth and the action is amazing (there is a lot of action). The Ilona Andrews duo does Urban Fantasy so well, I have yet to be disappointed with every book I have read. All are on my favorites lists. There are only four authors on this list. Yes, I am picky.
A really good conclusion to Kate's story. You get a really full circle feel, with old friends and enemies playing parts. The addition of her son makes for hilarious situations and shows a different side to her. There is so much packed into this book. Epic battles and ancient enemies, story of her life.
Honestly it started off kind of rocky but it found its own stride. Was really unsure about how they were going to handle the big bad after the last book's difficulties, but it was altogether very satisfactory! Still love this series and these voice actors. I can definitely see myself revisiting this series.
I am so glad that I was able to enjoy this series in a whole new format. Kate Daniels is one of, if not my favorite series, and I love this entire cast. Graphic Audio did a really good job of bringing these characters to life.
