A gyönyörű Katherine kolostorban nevelkedett kamasz lányként kerül az angol udvarba, Chaucer és a fekete halál századában. Nővére Chaucer jegyeseként segíti beilleszkedni a csodás, de mégis annyira idegen közegbe. Katherine ebben a veszélyes és romantikus korszakban érik asszonnyá. Ámulva látja az udvari pompát, fényűzést, a lovagi harcok kegyetlenségét. Ártatlansága, bájosan nyitott természete, különlegesen vonzó személyisége kiragyog a despota Plantagenetek intrikáktól bűzlő udvarából. Ann Seton was born in New York, and died in Old Greenwich, Connecticut. She was the daughter of English-born naturalist and pioneer of the Boy Scouts of America, Ernest Thompson Seton and Grace Gallatin Seton-Thompson. She is interred at Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich.
Her historical novels were noted for how extensively she researched the historical facts, and some of them were best-sellers.[citation needed] Dragonwyck (1941) and Foxfire (1950) were both made into Hollywood films. Two of her books are classics in their genre and continue in their popularity to the present; Katherine, the story of Katherine Swynford, the mistress and eventual wife of John of Gaunt, and their children, who eventually became the basis for the Tudor and Stuart families of England, and Green Darkness, the story of a modern couple plagued by their past life incarnations. Most of her novels have been recently republished, several with forewords by Philippa Gregory.
Her novel Devil Water concerns James, the luckless Earl of Derwentwater and his involvement with the Jacobite rising of 1715. She also narrates the story of his brother Charles, beheaded after the 1745 rebellion, the last man to die for the cause. The action of the novel moves back and forth between Northumberland, Tyneside, London and America.
Anya Seton stated that the book developed out of her love for Northumberland. Anya certainly visited her Snowdon cousins at Felton. Billy Pigg, the celebrated Northumbrian piper played 'Derwentwater's Farewell' especially for her. The novel shows her typical thorough research of events and places, though the accents are a little wayward. Anya Seton said that her greatest debt of all was to Miss Amy Flagg of Westoe Village in South Shields, her father's birthplace.

Truly a classic, everything was excellent. Characters are lovable and plot engaging. Love story is also magnificent.

Well written. Lots of historical information and a great love story. Very clean as it was written in the 1930's. Life was hard in the 14th century even if you were royalty, and especially if you were a woman. I really enjoyed hearing the basics of everyday life during that time period. John and Katherine's love story is amazing, I don't think it was very common back then for a royal to have such a committed relationship. It was rocky for sure, but awe-inspiring as well. Takes approx. 13-15 hours to read.

A 14. századi Angliában követhetjük végig egy köznemes asszony sorsát egész fiatalkorától kezdve. Klasszikus romantikus történelmi regény ez, ami sokkal inkább a történelmi vonalra helyezi a hangsúlyt, éppen ezért tetszett nekem, ritkán olvasol effélét.
Update:
Mivel GR-en egy könyvként szerepel a Katherine és nem két kötetként, ahogy nálunk megjelent, sajnálatos módon le kell pontoznom kissé, mert a második részt már elég izmosan untam a vége felé, de azért mindent összevetve kellemes kis történelem lecke volt.

Ovo je hrvatski prijevod knjige koju sam već stavila u engleskom originalu na svoje dvije police.
Iako nisam ljubitelj romansi, pa tako niti povijesnih, ova knjiga je jedna od onih koju bih mogla neprestano čitati....zašto? Jer ima onaj faktor "X" kada gurnem svoj nos među knjige.
Kupila sam ju gotovo odmah čim sam ju vidjela na policama knjižara i kioska, a potom ju u dahu pročitala. Još za vrijeme čitanja neke knjige povijesnog karaktera počnem čeprkati po enciklopedijama i internetu u potrazi za informacijama i činjenicama - da upotpunim znanje ili da saznam nešto o čemu pojma nemam. Kako sam malo znala o Katherine Swynford i Johnu Guntu, išla sam surfati po Google-u i svojim enciklopedijama kod kuće o njima i cijelom tom razdoblju.
Ne mogu vam opisati svoje zadovoljstvo što sam opet, po ne znam koji put, "namirisala" dobro štivo, (moje osobno mišljenje - s čime se ostali čitatelji ne moraju složiti). Znalo mi se dogoditi da koji put i fulam, ali to je samo zato što ne poslušam intuiciju pa me ljutnja na samu sebe preplavi poput uragana.
Obožavam englesku povijest. Općenito volim sve što je vezano z a Ujedinjeno Kraljevstvo i Republiku Irsku. Bez obzira znam li tog autora ili ne, bitno je da mi se sve poklopi - onda znam da je to to. A ovdje me privuklo sve - ime autorice, naslovnica i sami naslov. K tome sam dodala i čitanje kratkog sadržaja na kraju knjige (koricama) i moj izbor je postao neupitan.
Knjiga (oba dijela) sada krasi moju policu, među najdražima tj.onima koje namjeravam još koji puta pročitati.
