Unemployed accountant Sophie Masterson never dreams that a trip to Salem on Halloween night will change her life forever. When a birthday gift of a psychic reading is thrust upon her by her best friend, Sophie has no choice but to play along. She wants the winning lottery numbers but, instead, receives something far more ominous—a warning of things to come. Being told her own clairvoyant abilities will soon surface should be enough to send any woman running to hide. Throw in the possibility that something sinister is headed her way and all she wants is an easy out.
When asked to help her brother, the police chief, with some easy filing, she’s sure that her problems are over. She now has an income, a job, and a safe haven where she can relax. What she doesn’t expect is that one of those files will be the catalyst to set the wheels in motion for the predictions to come true.
Detective Jack Love has a hard time following instructions. When his latest bust gets him benched, and shoved in the cold case filing room, the last thing he expects is to be tasked with babysitting the chief’s sister. When unqualified and in-need-of-medication Sophie gets the crazy idea to play detective on a case gone cold, there is little he can do to dissuade her from investigating.
Attempting to keep her clairvoyant abilities a secret, Sophie Masterson thrusts herself into a cold case where the dead are multiplying, the clues are disappearing, and the hunky cop assigned to play babysitter is a nonbeliever. She doesn’t hold out much hope for solving the case, much less keeping her secret, especially when the dead seek her out to tell their tales.
When Sophie plays a deadly game of cat and mouse with winner takes all, it’s no longer the dead that scare her, but Jack Love. Surviving with her heart intact now ranks at the top of her list.
This has to be one of the most ridiculous and asinine books I've come across. I should've stuck with my gut instinct and taken a pass. Instead of my usual style of review, I'll do it in point form giving you a glimpse of what takes place even before I reach the fifty percent mark.
- the heroine, Sophie, is told by a psychic that she will be coming into her "abilities." - Sophie of course doesn't believe any of it. - the next day she goes to work for her brother, Max, Chief of Police, at the police station temping as a filer. - she's partnered with a cop, Jack, who's stuck on desk duty. - she has her first vision. - starts looking at a cold case. - convinces Jack to go with her and "investigate" the case. - she learns new things about the cold case that the police didn't know. - Jack wants to know how this is possible - that night she goes with Jack for a beer and lays it all out there for him, what the psychic told her about her new "abilities." - she tells him that she's going to keep on investigating with or without him and she's going to use her abilities to help her. - that night a woman is murdered, and guess what? Sophie and Jack were the last two to be seen with her. - Jack is beginning to believe in Sophie's abilities. He might as well as she's definitely believing in it now. - Sophie decides she needs a gun, which she gets and takes lessons. - Sophie grabs her best friend, Amber, and instead of going out for dinner, they start investigating the case together. - Amber thinks "This is fun." - Their next logical step is to go on a stakeout because they are after all "investigating" a case. (sarcasm)
For a 170 page novel it's going awfully fast, don't you think? I could go on and tell you all the other stupid shit Sophie does, how she puts herself in constant danger, and falls in love, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. But seriously, do I really need to? As for character development, how can there be any at the speed the novel is moving? Except for Jack being absolutely gorgeous with a sexy ass, and Sophie being so beautiful with a great body, why would you want to learn more about them? (yes, more sarcasm)
This is just another book I wish I could get my time and money back from. I'm still shaking my head at this one and I don't think it's going to stop anytime soon.

She ended up being psychic and solved a case of a serial killer. She has two handsome men that want her but she is currently with jack and I hope it stays that way. The other guys nice but I'm team Jack for sure. Can't wait to read book two. Some pretty good intimate scenes too. Smoking hot really. Not raunchy. Thank heavens.
Sometimes you need a quick read that doesn't take itself too seriously yet still packs a punch of fun, suspense, and steamy sex. LIFTING THE VEIL delivers all of those punches.
Sophie Masterson's life isn't playing fair. She lost out on the accounting job she desperately needed, a Salem psychic just predicted Sophie's own psychic abilities would make an appearance any day now, and she's been reduced to working as a temp for her brother, the Chief of Police. To make matters worse, Sophie is thrown into the cold case "freezer" with Jack Love, a know-it-all detective whose insubordination has landed him on desk duty. How is she expected to focus on entering all these cold case files into the data base with this obnoxious hunk of man breathing over her shoulder? When the photo of a murdered woman triggers Sophie's psychic gift/curse (she hasn't decided which yet) the story is off and running. As are Jack and Sophie, who technically shouldn't be investigating anything according to the Chief's orders.
The story is somewhat predictable but nevertheless very fun. Sophie is strong willed and opinionated, determined to solve the case of what appears to be a serial killer. Jack is...well, let's just say his huge ego borders on irritating. As expected, the sparks between Sophie and Jack ignite. I was not disappointed. *smile* When it becomes clear she is being stalked, Sophie takes matters into her own hands (with a little shove from her spirit guide) and learns how to shoot a gun. Enter Jack's best buddy, Marshall Dixon. As the successful owner of a private security company, Marshall is everything Jack is not; sophisticated, courteous, level headed. The fact that he's over-the-top hot and sexy as well as very interested in Sophie for more than her psychic gifts has Jack behaving more caveman than usual.
I thoroughly enjoyed this first book in the Veil/Dixon Security trilogy and look forward to reading book two.

Another great start of a series by this author. I love reading a book with mystery combined with supernatural elements. And this author never disappoints.
She writes fast paced stories with fun characters. This one was a bit more spicy. I loved the beginning with Soph & her best friend in Salem. One of my favorite places. And it’s a good thing Jack got himself together. I’m looking forward to more and hopefully Marshall meets Amber! I’m a sucker for a happy ending.
I was not surprised by the killer and I see Jacks open case will be a running thread. Diving into the next book.
This was an ok book. The characters seem to be still being developed, and the plot was kind of flat. However, I've read this author before and I have high hopes for this series. I think she just need to find the rhythm for this series.
I enjoyed this book. Sophie comes into her powers as s psychic and helps solve a case. I enjoyed the characters and story line. I did not like Jack. I'd rather Sophie end up with Marshall. I will continue the series just in hopes that she dumps his sorry butt and gets with Marshall.
I have mixed feelings about this book, because scoping out the blurb for the other books in the series, show that a rather big event that occurs in this book ends up being a no-go. Which takes away some of the enjoyment of the book- a shame really, because it is otherwise a good read. Sophie is an interesting woman, an accountant in her late twenties, who is for some reason at the start of the book, jobless and struggling. A trip to Salem at Halloween introduces her to the psychic side of things, and it’s not long before her latent talents in that line surface. While helping out her police chief brother, Sophie comes across a murder case, and starts to have visions associated with it. Alongside the hunky Detective Jack Love, assigned to babysit her, she starts to dig deeper in an attempt to find the truth.
With a well rounded cast of characters, a love triangle, and emerging psychic abilities, this makes for an enjoyable paranormal mystery. While there is romance, like I said there is also a triangle, and if you’re not a fan then you’ll want to skip this. If you can take the heat though, you’ll find an entertaining read, with some intriguing perspectives on how psychic abilities work.
An entertaining enough read that unfortunately lacked both coherence and believability. I was completely disinterested with the romance by the end; any chemistry between the FMC and MMC having fizzled out within the first few chapters.
Title: Lifting the Veil (Sophie Masterson/ Dixon Security #1) by Kate Allenton POV(s): Multiple—Third Person Interconnected Series: Yes Standalone: No Cliffhanger: No HEA: Relationship: M/F Genre(s): Paranormal Romance, Mystery-Suspense Triggers: N/A Tags/Tropes: ❖ Cold-Case ❖ Detective-MMC ❖ FMC-in-Danger ❖ Love-Triangle ❖ Psychic-FMC ❖ Sleuth-FMC ❖ Temporary-Partners["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Getting psychic powers is not all it's cracked up to be.
Awesome. Being unemployed is no fun and now being told that she will be developing psychic powers is really freaking her out. When she is given a handout job to transfer files onto computer files by her police chief brother she tries to make the most of it. But when a file triggers visions she starts to investigate the current spate of local murders. Unfortunately her partner is a hard headed non believer police officer. Can she get to the bottom of who is the killer when the police has failed? Will she turn the non believer around especially as they seem to be made for each other? A different slant on the traditional angle. The plot is fast paced and the characters are great and fully developed. Looks as if this will be another great series.
A wonderful combination of mystery, romance, paranormal and a bit of sex! Can't beat this combination! People are dying, a young woman goes to Salem where she learns that she has some special abilities that will be revealed to her shortly along with a spirit guide and she will have her choice of several jobs to chose from. Like I said this book combines so many things that it keeps moving and at the end you can't wait to read the next book in the series! Yes it is that entertaining! A bit violent and I hide under the bed for some violence but this is not that bad and the mysteries start to form a pattern that begins to show itself. Sophie Masterson meets her spirit guide who helps her discover her abilities! Enjoy the tale!
Lifting the Veil - Dixon Security #1 by Kate Allenton My thoughts: Sophie Masterson is an unemployed accountant who finds out she has special paranormal abilities. She ends up working for her police chief brother Max inputting information collected from cold cases into the police department data base. With the help of detective Jack Love and her best friend Amber Cantrell, Sophie sets out to solve the murders. If you suspend your logic/common sense and just go with the flow this is a delightful story which takes some interesting twists and turn and ends in a happy right now ending and sets up the other stories in this 4 book series. 4 stars.
What an amazing suspense thriller it was!! I enjoyed every part of it from beginning to the end. It kept me on edge and not being able to put the book down. And more specifically in my case.. I couldn't stop listening to the audiobook. I loved the narrators. They really enhanced my enjoyed of listening. Especially the main woman character's voice was a major, sweet.. like music for my ears. I definitely advise you to read the book and even better listen to the audiobook. I can't wait to listen to the next book in the series.
This is quite the story. I mean the MC doesn’t even believe in the occult. She does things just to support her friend and to humor her. Sophie doesn’t realize what’s going on until she is in the middle of a case. I thought she was strong for how much she went through. I felt the emotions coming off of her throughout the story.
What is stopping me from giving 5 stars is the editing that needs to be done. There are some words that need to be switched around, also some words that are not spelled correctly.
The book was surprisingly good with the exception of detective Jack Love. Jack is overbearing, opinionated, and controlling . The book would have been a lot better without Jack. Luckily Jack's best friend Marshall is everything that Jack isn't. He is kind, thoughtful, considerate, supportive.
All in all the book doesn't have any ground breaking originality or ingenuity. It was an easy read, with a predictable plot.
OK, how stupid are women anyway? Do you just not feel worthwhile to the point you waste yourself on disgusting pigs? She might have interesting, given a chance, but pig boy guaranteed that I won't be wasting my precious reading time past the 40 or so pages I suffered through. Slipping to the laast 5 pages to see if she grew a pair of ovaries ascertained that I amthrilled that this series will not go onto my reading list.
I've been binge reading this authors books. I got this book a few years ago when it was a new series and while waiting for a second book I found other books and authors. I found The series about Rylee St. James by this author and enjoyed it so much I went looking for more by the author. If you like the genre you will love this author. This is the 4th series of hers I've enjoyed reading this week.
Sophie and Amber go to psychic fair. She's told her powers will come soon. Told her aura is violet nd she'll be offered two jobs and will have to choose. Her brother the Max gives her a part-time job scanning cold cases into the system. She gets a vision about one of the cases. Srarts a little slow but picks up and then moves faster. Good story and characters.
I purchased this awhile ago and apparently I didn’t like it. Well, I re-read this story and I love it. Enjoyed Sophie as she gained and learned to use her new abilities. I love Marshall’s character and what a good guy he is! Jack is a little boy, but he is there for Sophie. I can’t wait to read the next book!
I enjoyed the book and the characters. Sophie is in for a life shocker but she will have help. Jack is a cocky cop that is saddled with Sophie as a partner. They have their ups and downs.
Some people won't like the psychic angle of the book but I look beyond the details to the level that it entertains me. This book did just that.
I enjoyed this first entry, but I think I would've liked a slow burn romance more. With psychic stories, I think I tend to want the mystery and supernatural to outweigh the romance. I'm also hoping that this series doesn't continue with the love triangle because those can become nerve-wracking. Gonna read the second installment and see where this is going.
This would have gotten a higher rating without the sexual interludes. It was refreshing to discover a new author of the paranormal nature! The characters are vibrant and believable. Am looking forward to seeing more books by this author .
I ENJOYED THIS, IT’S A SERIES, THE CHARACTERS WERE LIKABLE AN I WAS A BIG FAN OF THE TV SHOW MEDIUM. I THINK I’LL TRY BK#2 AND SEE IF ITS WORTH CONTENUING. I’M TORN BETWEEN JACK AND MARSHALL; I HOPE MARSHALL FINDS LOVE BUT NOT WITH SOPHIE. ;D
I liked this it was well written with a few editing mistakes that didn't detract from the story. It was a good story that had some laughs and great characters. This is my first time reading this author and I will definitely read more of her in the future.
The story was short felt more drama could of been added. The story itself was good. Hoping it takes some twist and turns. This one left it open to change it up. I'm sure it will not. It will stay in line. Would be nice if it did
New Author to me and I'm happy to say it's a good read so far. Three more to go and I'm looking forward to continuing the series. There is a psychic lean so if it's not your bag be warned. The characters are varied and interesting.
Good characters, lead is new to her power but not overwhelmed. Allenton (as usual) is a bit heavy-handed with sex scenes but of course, it is true love. The story itself is well-paced and fairly straightforward. I look forward to next books.
A trip to Salem on Halloween let's her powers out. While working at the police station, she finds into a serial killer. Her partner helps her catch him.
