The Shackleford Sisters #7

Chastity: The Shackleford Sisters, Book 7

Rate this book
In this funny Regency romance series, the Shackleford sisters descend on a Regency society that doesn't know what's hit it…

In the eyes of her family, Chastity Shackleford was impulsive, flighty, overly emotional and inclined to sentimental overtures. All in all, a disaster waiting to happen should she accept the Duke of Blackmore's offer of a Season in London. But what else was she to do since her twin sister and best friend had abandoned her for the wilds of Cornwall?

Naturally she might have hoped that disaster had waited a little longer before striking, but at least she faced the possibility of marriage with someone who had all his own teeth. The fact that the gentleman was also wanted for murder was a little off-putting, but then one couldn't have everything.

When Christian Stanhope was forced to jump ship after being accused of a crime he didn't commit, he'd never expected to return to England. But then he'd never expected to become the next Earl of Cottesmore either.

However, if he was to survive the merciless world of England's aristocracy, clearing his name was essential. And for that he needed the help of his former First Lieutenant Nicholas Sinclair, now the Duke of Blackmore. But first he had to convince the Duke that he was not guilty of a heinous murder committed seventeen years earlier. A task easier said than done.

But just when he despaired of ever finding the real culprit and bringing him to justice, help, or possibly hindrance, arrived from an unexpected quarter…

Perfect for fans of Regency Romances with wit and humor and a little bit of steam...

before you read - ask yourself what you want out of this book.

The first important thing to do before you read this book is to ask yourself. What do you want out of it?

Are you reading it for silliness and chuckles? OK proceed.

Are you reading it for a cast of truly entertaining characters? OK proceed.

Are you reading it for a little bit of an adventure? You might find it so, proceed.

Are you reading it for a “who really done it”mystery? While light on details, it’s still okay to proceed.

Are you reading it because you enjoyed the others in the series and you want to spend more time with the Shackleford family? By all means please proceed.

But if what your looking for is for the romantic relationship. Be weary and if you want the romance and relationship to form and believably progress. STOP. Do not proceed. Pick another book. The couple in this book barely know each other, they spend very little time together and almost none alone. They know nothing about the person they are coming to “love” and as of the end of the book they won’t. But if that’s okay with you then feel free to proceed.

In my opinion, this book was entertaining. While I was left wanting in some aspects, and I wouldn’t tell any one “OMG you Have to read this”. It’s okay because I put down the book chuckling and content with the few hours I spent reading.

Christian knows the Duke of Blackmore from his navy days. Chastity ask Christian to dance while trying to avoid another Lord .
This puts her in disgrace by the ton. The Duke not happy as Christian was thought to have killed another officer 17 years ago.
Christian offers for Chastity, and tells the Duke of his innocence. Now he needs to prove his innocence.
Still enjoying this series and the humour.

Slow but nice

The book was cute and clean and I liked the characters but it was a tad slow for me. But I like the family dynamics, the reverend and the dog. The characters are true 'characters' and several of the antics made me smile. I look forward to reading the next one. I have read them out of order but I didn't feel that lost but it's probably better to read them in order to truly get it.

I have now read the books in order related to the first 7 sisters I felt it took me a little bit to get into the series but I have grown to love this quirky sibling group their father (the reverend) and his curates antics, the husbands to be have flaws but are handsome and even though not perfect (who is) turn out to be perfect for their intended lady. Each book seems to have some similar themes and phrases (you can expect every sister to "tie their garter in public" in one way or the other, and the reverend is always talking his curate into meddling into affairs that could potentially be dangerous/not well thought out often also involving one of his daughters). This series is great when you are looking to relax as they are an enjoyable and quick read with some humor in the mix. I'm going to be moving onto the 8th book and I'm sad that there are only 2 left in this series. Some of the books in this series are a bit spicy this one is not if you are looking for a cute less spicy book this is the one for you.

3.75* Came across this book and thought it might be a short, fun read. And, it is. Didn't realize that it's book#7 of a series, but no matter, it still could be read as a stand-alone. Chastity Shackleford is part of a big loving family that has 8 daughters. She was attending her brother-in-law's new year party when she inadvertently did something "scandalous" and necessitates her to be married or be ruined. The male MC, Christian, came home to England to inherit a title but is haunted by the claim that he had murdered someone whilst in the Royal Navy. Anyways, they meet, they align, and as these stories go, they fall in love. Nothing unexpected, but for an easy enjoyable read, this does the trick. Probably will look into the other books of the series in the near future.

I'm currently at chapter 5 and I'm pretty sure that the prologue made you think it would be more romance. But the more you read this series the less there's romance and the more it is murder mysteries and crime thrillers. Which I mean it's cool if that's what you want to write about but I don't want to read a romance novel because the first two books are romance novels, while the rest of the start turning into literally feeling attraction because they think they will die. None of theses couples seem like they would actually ever be together if it wasn't for traumatic experiences. When they finally wear off, they would be like two strangers. This couple is no different. Especially if you spend. More time talking about a stupid boat, like no one cares. It's not even clever the writing to even be considered funny. It's just feels like a drag to continue reading as if the author didn't even like writing romance novels but enjoys the money romance novel can bring.

No seriously there need to be a category that isn't DNf but call skipped around to finish (satf)

Always enlightening!

I love that the books in this series are under 300 pages and are a quick read. Now that I am nearing the end I know that I am going to miss the delightful, witty and funny characters. I've laughed loudly at the antics of the Shackleford family and their extended family and friends.

Fun Read

I must say, at times it is difficult to understand the lingo in these books as they are words used in Queen Charlotte’s time but that just gives me the chance to learn more about the characters and their speech patterns! Please, give it a try! The love story alone is well worth it.

MY RATING GUIDE: 4.5 Stars (rounded up). As a Pick-Me-Up read, CHASTITY fit my mood perfectly. I’ve been listening & reading my way through the Shackleford series since I first discovered it (and the author) a number of months ago. This series is light in tone with a romp-adventure style. I found myself truly enjoying CHASTITY, it being among my favorites in the series so far. I liked the characters, was immediately pulled into a Christian’s dilemma to clear his name, and enjoyed the plentiful humorous scenes that seem entirely credible with the Shackleford family. I have purchased the last 2 audiobooks in the series and look forward to listening to them soon. (The author has hired a number of narrators for this series. Just one seems miscast for the characters; but this is a minor issue and didn’t disrupt my enjoyment).

1= dnf/What was that?; 2= Nope, not for me; 3= This was okay/fairly good & might or might not read it again; 3.5= I enjoyed it & might read it again; 4= I LIKED THIS A LOT & would read it again; 5= I Loved this; it was great! & most likely will read again (I SELDOM give 5 Stars).

London, 1815 (after 23yrs war w Napoleon) ~
During a naval conflict 17yrs previous, 2nd Lt Christian Stanhope was accused of a murder at sea that he didn't commit. The 1st lieutenant reluctantly granted Christian the option of jumping overboard, never to return to England, instead of being hung. Christian survived. In first Boston then New York, he worked hard, eventually becoming successful and content. But when unexpected letters notifying Christian that he had gained both an unknown daughter and inherited the family title of the Earl of Cottesmore, in Devonshire, Christian reluctantly decides to return to London knowing great risk lay in wait for him there.

Chastity, the current marriageable daughter of the vicar of Blackmoor, is attending a ball held by her brother-in-law, the Duke of Blackmoor. Attempting to avoid a particularly eager viscount, Chastity approaches a man unbeknownst to her, Christian Stanhope, at the beginning of a walz. She requests that he might consider dancing the next walz with her. Stanhope is amused by her boldness and agrees. 17yrs earlier, it was her brother-in-law, naval 1st Lt Nicolas Sinclair, who offered Christian an opportunity to live rather than be hung for murder. Stanhope desperately requires the Duke’s assistance a second time as he plans to clear his name of murder.

Comments ~
1) Each book in the Shackleford series features one of Reverend Shackleford’s eight daughters, with the 9th and final book featuring the Reverend’s only son.
2) CHASTITY is bk7 in the 9bk Shackleford Sisters Historical/Comedy Romance series and can probably be read and enjoyed as a standalone title. Each novel after bk1, however, returns certain older siblings and their (newly) acquired spouses in peripheral roles in the books that follow.
3) In my previous reviews of bks 1-3, I remarked upon the frequent & ridiculous behavior of Mr Shackleford. (His character was the main comic relief, especially in the earlier books). I felt his behavior was more restrained in the books that followed (or I am getting used to his ridiculous behavior). Plenty of romp-adventure and craziness occurs and the stories move quickly. I am surprised to be enjoying these as much as I am, as Pick-Me-Up, entertaining and humorous reads. This is my first series by B Watts.
4) Readers looking for a light palate cleanser, a Regency Comedic Romance Romp, a Pick-Me-Up read, something a bit crazy and not particularly deep might enjoy checking out this series. Books 3-7 (FAITH, HOPE, PATIENCE, CHARITY & CHASTITY) are my favorites so far (but the first 2 grabbed my attention, so there is that). ;D

READER CAUTIONS ~
PROFANITY - Yes. Strong language and English slang are used on occasion.
VIOLENCE - PG-13+. Yes. Brief mention of “pirate” violence, ie., knife fighting, street thugs but not dark or graphic.
SEXUAL SITUATIONS - Innuendo with brief intimacy near the end, which could easily be skipped if desired.

I enjoyed Chastity's story. However, I am beginning to think the anxiety level of the series may be wearing on Ms. Watts. I know it is me. I literally had to walk away from Charity for a day to rest my nerves. Beverley Watts could easily become a thriller novelist, with a taste for the macabre. Ugh! However, with Chastity, the intensity level has waned a bit. Our villain is not averse to murder, and would have murdered his own sister had he known what she was up to.
I like the flashbacks providing Christian's backstory and his relationship with the duke. Our hero is easily likeable from the beginning. Charity, the reverend, and Percy are determined to help him and Christian quickly begins to wonder what he has gotten himself into and his old friend, Nicholas, has married into a family that is definitely dicked in the nob. In his attempt to save his name and his life and protect his daughter, he sort of overlooks Chastity's qualities until other parts of his anatomy get his attention. I didn't find as much humour or (thank goodness) anxiety in this one and was able to relax a bit. After the last 4, I was glad of it. Of course, when the duke and the rest of the brothers-in-law are in your corner, you can't fail. I did not like the abrupt ending, but hopefully, Prudence will give us some insight into Chastity and Christian's life. I also wish Charity had been a part of this one. She and Chastity have been inseparable until Charity's story and the twins need to reunite. But otherwise, I did enjoy the pace of this one. It has a little heat, but this, too, has been toned down in this book. I would have to rate it a 2+ here.

Chastity is finally getting her Season to be introduced to London's society and possibly a marriage. At her first ball, she finds herself sitting out most of the dances. The reputation of the Shackleford sisters' has not been forgiven yet. Only one man wishes to dance with her, Viscount Trebworthy. He was wealthy and had a title which was enough for her father. However, he was tall and skinny with terribly bad breath. Chastity was wishing she was elsewhere and blaming Charity for not being here to help.
At the end of the dance, Chastity sent the Viscount for something to drink and looked around for a way to find somewhere else to be. She sees an handsome man nearby and impulsively asks him to dance. He suggestively asks her if this is a proposition. She says she doesn't know what that is; but if it is yes if he will dance with her. He does, after which he leaves. The next day, the scandal broke, Chastity had propositioned an Earl at the Blackmore Ball, Her reputation is ruined. The only way out is for her to marry the Earl. However, Duke Blackmore has strenuous objections to the Viscount. He knew him and knew that he had been accused of killing another sailor and then escaping. The Earl had been a friend of the Duke's on board the ship. He strenuously objected to any thing to do with the Earl. Chastity knew she had to warn the Earl about the Duke which is how she found herself one night waiting in the Earl's bedroom one night for him to come home.

Found lacking

I have absolutely loved this series, even though this book has some great comic relief just like the others overall the story was very disappointing. Really thought it was going to go in a different direction with regards to Chastity and Christian. Her being a hopeless romantic falling for someone not interested in love, would have been a perfect opportunity to show how she creeps into his cold heart. Maybe have them married and then see how the relationship unfolds, see how she dissolves is icy heart by being a wonderful mother and her cheery disposition changes his mind and views. There was nothing in the story that actually made sense as to why he loved her, the family played more of a part in it as a whole than it actually being Chastity. I think the whole stolen gem etc storyline was not needed, just trying too hard to follow the same trend as the other books. Should have just stuck with her making a fool of herself and they get compromised so forced to marry, and just explore that outcome instead, it would have been more refreshing and enjoyable then repeating the same farce as the other books. Chastity and Christian could have been a good enemies to lovers storyline. I hope Prudence is better.

Enjoyment level: 4.5 ⭐
Plot: 4 ⭐
Characters: 5 ⭐
Spice: 0.5🌶️

This is an excellent addition to the series. It wasn't one of my favourites, but tbh the series is so much fun it doesn't mean much!

I think I would have loved to have seen the twins together for one of their books. At least a bit more than we did! Also, whilst obviously these books are romances, this one felt the least like a romance. It was almost like the romance element was incidental and we didn't really get as much time with Christian and Chastity as we needed.

That being said, the reverend, as always, provided endless entertainment. I loved the cast of side characters, with Lizzie and Jimmy in particular as good additions (or expansions on previous in Jimmy's case).

The mystery was fun, and the flashback element was good. I just wish there had been a bit more time spent on the romance.

Still, excellent fun, an easy and quick read.

Giving up on Romance

Chastity Shackleford was a romantic at heart. Grace decided she needs a season in London. While at the Duke ball, the young duke was coming to ask her to dance again, she was hiding as he had the worst breath.
Chastity seen a gentleman leaning against the wall. She goes up to the gentleman and asked for ten minutes of his time. At the end of the dance he asked for some favor, tell the Duke of Blackmore that Christian Stanhope awaits him.
When Chastity advised the Duke, he was not happy. Also she was now ruined. Was advised that Christian had murdered someone seventeen years ago. He thought he never see him again.
Christian gives the Duke information what he found. They decide to investigate the person he feels was involved.
While the investigation continues. Christian is advised that chastity was compromised and he needs to correct it.

Chastity like all the Shackelford sisters had the ability to make a cake of herself in the most unfortunate way. Although being granted a season in London by her sister and brother-in-law the Duke, at her very first ball she ruined herself. Dancing with a titled gentleman with the foulest breath, she requested a bit of refreshment. While he went to get her a drink, she approached a stranger and asked him to dance with her. Noe according to to etiquette, you must never speak to a gentleman you have not been introduced to. Chastity did not know that by doing this and waltzing with this gentleman she was socially ruined. No gentleman of quality would marry her. Since she instigated the insodenent, the gentleman was not required to ask for her hand.
Fortunately Christian was such a man to seek the favor of the Duke of Blackmore and agreed to marry Chastity.

Although I am posting this review on Chastity, the seventh book in the Shackleford Sisters series, having read the series in its entirety, my comments apply to all the books. Firstly may I say thank you to Beverley Watts for introducing me to a range of vocabulary that I will no doubt continue to use, although how I will introduce words such as “leg shackled,” (marriage), plumpers (lies) and Banbury Tales (fictional stories) in a 21st conversation will be a challenge.

I have a weakness for Regency Romances and I usually succumb to them when I am “Friday faced,” and in the past ten days I have been in somewhat of a depressive mood, so thank you again Beverley because this series allowed me to escape from “the blue devils.”

I found the series delightfully amusing, particularly the antics of the Reverend Augustus Shackleford and his curate, Percy, not forgetting, Freddy the faithful hound dog. With eight daughters to marry off, Augustus had a Herculean task ahead of him which he managed to accomplish, despite continually falling “in the suds” and having to be rescued by his long suffering son-in-law, The Duke of Blackmore.

5 STARS, DRAMA & ROMANCE WITH LAUGHS

Book 7 is 5 STARS for the interesting storyline in the exciting Series: The Shackleford Sisters. A good BLURB is provided. Characters are great some from previous books in this series.

Reverend Shackleford has 8 daughters & has been on a quest for a few years to marry them off, and this time he is in London with the Duke & Her Grace to try to propel Chasity forward. However, at a wonderful celebration ball over Napoleon, Chasity, made the huge mistake to ask an Earl to dance.

In those times it was seen as if she asked him to climb in her bed or if she could his. Another daughter caught tying her garter in public. The Earl is a former navel underling of the Duke who had been accused of murder 17 years ago but he wants his name cleared, now.

This storyline is different than the others & is more dangerous.

The Shackleford Family

Reverend Shackleford is renowned for sticking his nose in with wanting to secure 'fine' husbands for all his daughters! Never does it 'go to plan', and he ends up creating havoc, bringing the daughters with him on these mad capers, usually created by himself, having eavesdrop, getting the wrong end of the stick. But, so much fun, hurtling along the South Coast, all brought to .ife by the Author
The adventures they endure are hilariously funny, you are laughing aloud!
I have enjoyed all the books written by Beverley Watts, and look forward to the next one.
Thank you Beverley for another splendid read x

One more great book,

This is the story of Chastity, the last of the Shackleford twins. though still young she is interested in getting married but seemed to have put the ideas of romance out of her head. Like the other sisters a slight mistake has her targeted and in order to mitigate further damage it is decided it is best for her to wed. There are many issues with the gentleman Christian, he has been a ship mate of Nicholas the Duke of Blackmore when things went horribly wrong. The story has a bit of everything mystery, intrigue, coincidence, humor and of course love. Enjoy!

Good Story, Little Interaction with Main Characters

The storylines of this series are good. However, I see a pattern of not much interaction with the main characters. Stories are more about the supporting characters. The only interaction is that there is no real friction to love. They meet and within a week both characters are in love without any real interaaction to help them discover love. The only love scenes are a stolen kiss, the man feels her breasts and nothing more. Now they are in love. Really? No build up to love. No fun interaction with the exception of the father and his sidekick antics. There should be more between the main characters.

The seventh installment in this series devoted to the Shackleford sisters, set in Regency England. This one, telling the story of the 7th sister, Chastity, is the usual blend of romance, comedy and intrigue.
The intrigue subplot is very entertaining. It starts with some events that occurred 15 years earlier. These are narrated with flashbacks and a very appealing naval flavour.
The romance here is even better than in previous books. It's still quite light, but it's less instantaneous and more gradual, with lust playing a lesser role.
Last, but not least, the pair formed by Reverend Shackleford and his curate, Percy Moon, is in full form, with a hilarious scene climbing up a tree in Mayfair.

Worthy continuation of a good series. This book continues the humour and fast paced plot that you find in the other books. Chastity is a little unusual as she does not act completely opposite to her given name and remains quite chaste. She is however reckless and impulsive like her sisters so this gives rise to the usual spate of unfortunate incidents.

Christian is perfectly reasonable but a fairly unremarkable character and most of the other minor characters remain as before and act true to type. There is some drama in the plot and at one point it descends to the macabre.

His Chasity

I absolutely loved Chasity and Christian’s story. She the 7th daughter of the Reverend that needs to wed and Christian a man on the run for 17 years for a murder he did not commit.
When Christian found out her was an Earl and also a father to an almost 9 year old, he realized he needed to finally clear his name. Chasity wasn’t sure she wanted to marry but when she asked Christian to dance at her sisters ball she realized she just tied her garter’s in Publix and only Christian can help.
A wonderful story with a beautiful ending.

The heroines in this series come across as naive—portrayed first as foolish, then suddenly transformed into sexually liberated women who still want to be seen as “good girls.” They aim to appear bold, yet often lack common sense and self-awareness.

Regency-era novels, in particular, reinforce how and why many of the assumptions women have internalized about themselves. For example, the character who believed her childbearing years were behind her at “one and thirty,” or others who felt they were done for because she hasn’t married by “two and twenty” or “four and twenty.”

I really enjoyed Chastity, it’s my favourite so far

Definitely my favourite so far, but every book has been so entertaining, exciting and that hint of romance in every book. My imagination has conjured up a golden age of beautiful gowns and equally beautiful women living a life of pure luxury in the most amazing houses. Bring on Prudence! But I shall be sad when I’ve read them all and there are no more to be read.

I think of the sisters so far, Chastity is my least favourite. Not because she's not brilliant, but the stories of her sisters seem better... It starts off well in her scandalous way, but I'm not sure about the window climbing and the plot uncovering in this Shackleford seems kinda rushed?!
Still I admit, I am definitely loving this family and love that dose of happy their stories provide! Kinda sad I only have two more to go!!

Best one yet!

I’ve enjoyed the entire series, but some of the titles have had IMO rather weak plots. This one, though, was a wonderfully engaging read! Alternating between Christian’s past and present really drew me in to the plot, and the character development and relationship development between him and Chastity moved much more convincingly than some of the other relationships in previous titles. A great, can’t-put-it-down read!
