The Swifttide Fleet is the least impressive of the four factions that rule the city of Narapan, a nest of pirates, cutthroats and thugs. For years, the competing fleets, stronger one and all, have been driving the Swifttide Fleet closer to the wall. Their numbers, funds, and territory shrink by the day, and unless they act soon, the Fleet might well collapse.
Gerris, third in command on the flagship, is a simple man. He’s been indebted to the Fleet for years beyond count, and has spent the majority of his life in service of the Fleet. When the Fleet's last chance at survival is revealed, Gerris has no choice but to pack up his scant possessions, and line up at the docks.
This is not the type of story I would usually choose to read. However, a friend wrote it, so of course I had to give it a try. In the beginning I was very aware of this friends presence in the novel, but soon enough I got immersed in the story.
The plot moved along nicely and the world it was set in was drawn in a believable way. The dialogue and recognizable analogies like “looked at the crowd like a teacher waiting for her students to show initiative” make that world more real. They were also good for a chuckle or two.
Some little things I loved were “she was a leaf on the wind” (nice reference, Luke) and “A clash between titans is best left to titans. […] You should have spent more time with Wenarras, then you might have known the rules of stories. Because everything is a story, isn't it?” And the ending! The ending was fantastic. It could have used some more build-up though.
Which brings me to another weak point in the novel: the characters. I liked them alright, but they felt a little flat to me. I couldn't get entirely swept up in what happened to them, if I'm phrasing that right. Although I could really appreciate the female ones. Not one of them becomes a love interest! Or is described in a sexual way! In a story about pirates! They stand on equal ground with the males, which is awesome.
All in all, well done Mr. Watchman. I look forward to the sequel. & thanks for the dedication ;)
