Kate Settles Into a Life with Her New Family: a Murderer, an Alcoholic, a Thief, a Teenage Runaway…and a Wolf.
Summer 1983: Abandoned by their mother, sixteen-year-old Kate, and her younger brother and sister find themselves on the streets.
Alone and homeless, they seek refuge in a derelict bungalow in the English countryside where they meet their new family: a robber, a convict, an alcoholic and a troubled teenage runaway.
Struck by the tragedy of her sister's death and terrorized by a new arrival, Kate yearns for an end to their brutal and squalid existence. She asks herself whether she should keep running or ask someone for help, someone like the woodcutter.
Does the mysterious stranger in the woods hold the secret to a wonderful future or a deadly past?

I won a copy of "Running" by S.C.Bryce through the Goodreads Giveaway Contest in exchange for a honest review. This was a dark piece of fiction with a supernatural twist.
The story takes place in the summer of 1983, when sixteen-year-old Kate, and her younger brother, Josh and sister, Ellie find themselves on the streets, after being abandoned by their mother. They used to live in Erin Town, miles away from the country, in a two bedroom flat. Tosh and Ellie had been spoiled by their father...but ignored by Kate, as he wasn't her real father. He didn't love her. Her mother didn't know who Kate's real father was. Kate was ten years old when dad left.
So as you can see, Kate was never allowed the luxury of just being a child...because her responsibility was to look after her brother and sister, and my heart went out to her. They were runaways, alone and homeless, just trying to exist. They ended up moving into an abandoned "Bungalow",in the English countryside where they meet their new family. People drift in and out to stay at the bungalow, especially in the winter months. There were twelve rooms in the bungalow, not counting their Room, the kitchen and the washroom. Supposedly, this dwelling used to be a factory. Drifters have come and gone, left their memories behind, and junk or treasures are everywhere, but it makes a nice addition to the home.
One of my favourite passages in the novel, was when Mannis, a long-time resident of the bungalow tells Kate:
" I never imagined I'd wind up homeless. I'm just a girl.
Mannis says a man living on the streets isn't a tramp, he's homeless and a child living on the streets isn't homeless, he's a runaway."
The story opens with the sudden death of Ellie, Kate's younger sister. This tragedy, causes Kate to question if she has done the "right thing" by bringing her siblings to live a life on the run, one of just existence...OR if she should ask for help! Can she learn to trust anyone?
A well written emotional novel with underlining thoughts.

This book reminds me of On the Jellicoe Road, the book that won the Michael Printz Award, the award given for 'Best Books written for teens' and now I'm thinking that it will really bother me if this book doesn't win some award or something.
One great thing about this book is the author combined memories and present happenings in order for the story to click. When you started reading this, there are so many scattered pieces that will make you raise questions about what's happening but as you keep on reading there's this 'certain part' that will just link all the jumbled pieces together and it will left you in shock.
I will make this review spoiler free, so I will just express my love for the characters. Even from the start, Kate is shown to be a strong character already. It's shown how she handles every trial thrown at her and she still's protect her family. But even thou she's already a tough one, you can still see how she develops and how she decides on the book and that's one thing I really adore about her character.
I also fell in love with Saul because . . . I don't he seems like a really great guy and tough one. There's this part that gave me a *mini heart attack* because. . . as I said spoiler free *winks*
Thanks to the author for focusing on the family theme which is rarely shown on books in our generation. The twist on the ending left me in shock because it's the least possible scenario that I expected.
I recommend this to people who wants a fresh read and wants some unforeseen ending. This focuses on family, development and sticking together.
I was gifted Running, by SC Bryce, by Inkspand in exchange for an honest review. Running begins with Ellie being wrapped in a sheet and placed in a grave. Ellie, 6, was the little sister of Kate, 17, and Tosh, 8(?). After their father had abandoned the kids, their mother abandons them one day because, as Kate says, she knows Kate can take care of them. The kids are staying in an abandoned house, a bungalow, with Mannis, Saul, Dock, and whatever drunks and bums Mannis lets stay the night. The family has a set routine, until the day the Wolf, Rick, shows up. The Wolf scares everyone; he is mean, just to be mean. He looks like he is made of money and has no real reason to be at the bungalow. Even Mannis is afraid of him. Although Kate doesn't realize, she is a strong girl. She does what she can trying to protect her brother and her very good friend Saul. She trusts Mannis to keep her and Tosh safe. She meets the Woodsman, Alden, and learns to trust him. I was surprised by the ending. I'm not sure if I like it, I think I do. It nicely wrapped up and all loose ends tied. The majority of Running is written in Kate's point of view- the final section, the wrap-up, was written in other people's perspective, but it doesn't change the story, it helps to explain what happened to all the characters. I would recommend this book to my friends who are fans of young adult, mystery or suspense. Five stars!
Very good history and it's written really fantastic. It is an emotional and at times terrifying tale. The characters develop over the course of the story. Secrets are revealed and scores are settled. There is a very big twist at the end. Thank you for a very pleasant experience.
I was recently Given this site by a friend and I can't say that I have seen any other site cheaper. Running was excellent. Wonderful communication, and excellent turn around time.

Book Review - "Be prepared to experience intense heart pounding emotion!" 5/5 Stars
This was an amazing young adult book! It's the first of it's kind that this reviewer has ever read. It's definitely in a class of its own. Kate and her siblings are taken in and cared for by Mannis who growls a great deal but underneath he's a caring man doing the best he knows how to take care of the kids. The three orphans go through a series of misadventures. There are a lot of twists and turns, many that you don't even see coming until after it's happened. I will warn you that you won't figure it all out, won't put all of the pieces together until the very end - why everything played out the way it did in the book and that is pure genius on the part of the author! I never expected it and at the end had a huge Ah Hah! moment when all of the pieces finally came together and everything clicked into place. This book is magnificent, I just can't say that enough! It's well written and extremely intense and engaging to the point where you won't be able to put it down until you have read it to the very end. I began reading this book, being capture and drawn in from the first page and it kept its hold onto me until the end and what felt like only a few minutes had passed, I was shocked to see that in reality, three hours had passed! That does not happen to me very often. Now, onto the nitty gritty stuff. As I said, the book is well written by a master storyteller. I could visualize every character and every scene in the book without any issues at all. The whole book flowed quite nicely. Each character's background and how they came to be together, as well as the characters' development, plot and storyline were all masterfully crafted by Author SC Bryce. The scenes were logical in sequence. There was a sufficient amount of down time between intense scenes allowing for a build up to the next intense one. Every action can be clearly "seen" visually. The character dialogue was perfect allowing the reader to see what the characters wre doing while speaking and were extremely realistic as were the scenes. Overall, this book was brilliantly done and written. I highly recommend this book not only to young adults but to adults as well who like a refreshing new read that is in a caliber all of it's own!
I was surprised at how this book turned out, beautifully. I enjoyed every minute of it. All I can say is if only, if only you believe. And if you believe, you'll love this story.
This story has many twists and turns. Not at all what I expected. Good book - especially if you like the darker side. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
