Abgebrochen nach etwa der Hälfte. Dieser Roman wurde von zwei Teenagern geschrieben und das merkt man. Durch schlechte Schwerpunktsetzung und ausschweifenden Details an den falschen Stellen leider zäh wie eine Schuhsohle. Einzelne Charaktere sind interessant, aber das hilft leider auch nicht.

Quivelda is een rustig dorp op het platteland van het keizerrijk Calaspia. De Barue, het volk dat er woont, zijn kleine, vredelievende mensen met een grote voorliefde voor goed eten en goed gezelschap. Op de avond dat Bryn Bellyset, een 16-jarige Barue, weer naar het dorp terugkeert na zijn studie in een klooster, wordt hij samen met zijn dorpsgenoten weggevoerd in slavernij door de afschuwelijke Ostentum, monsters die al jaren niet meer in Calaspia gezien zijn. Deze slavernij blijkt nog maar het begin te zijn van een reeks gebeurtenissen die overduidelijk aan de Waanzin te wijden zijn – de macht die overal aanwezig is en het goede ten kwade kan keren Bryn en zijn vrienden worden onherroepelijk meegesleurd in een samenzwering om de heerschappij in Calaspia over te nemen en ze lijken niet bij machte deze te stoppen. Maar toch niet alles is zinloos, zelfs niet in het aangezicht van de Waanzin?

Episch
Het eerste dat opvalt aan De samenzwering van Calaspia is het 'epische' gevoel dat je vanaf de eerste pagina hebt. De proloog is fascinerend, grappig en meeslepend en de karakters worden meteen goed neergezet. Na de proloog verschuift de focus naar Bryn en zijn Barue-vrienden: een gezellig volkje. De warmte van de Barue-gemeenschap wordt prachtig geschetst en de ontzetting na de aanval van de Ostentum is dan ook groot, niet alleen bij hen maar ook bij de lezer. De ontwikkelingen daarna gaan verder in de epische trend die al was gezet.

Een consequentie, of waarschijnlijk de oorzaak, van dit 'epische' gevoel, is het taalgebruik in het boek. Dit komt vooral tot uiting in de dialogen, die weliswaar geen woord teveel bevatten, maar tegelijkertijd dingen wel héél erg duidelijk en groots omschrijven. Iedere emotie wordt uitgebreid besproken, geen druppel angstzweet onbenoemd gelaten. Dit maakt het boek niet eenvoudig om in te komen, hoewel het meeslepende verhaal veel goedmaakt.

A cute fantasy beginning in the vein of Lord of the Rings. Bryn Bellyset of the brewer families is the hero, accompanied by his cousin, niece & nephew, the Scottish dwarf fighter Galar and High Lore-Master Eridanus. They must uncover the reason of the return of monsters to the region, and uncover the truth behind the mystery shrouding the whole thing. Someone in the Calaspian government is a traitor. And the dark reach of Insanity is increasing, with truth being twisted and lies being accepted.

Tracked, captured, escaping, following: the adventures are myriad and harrowing. The group gets separated and each tries to discover what they can, assembling their collected pieces afterwards at the magnificent water-city that is the capital. But Bryn's gift of hearing thoughts, a special stone, his "chosen one" status, and being in the right place at the right time result in the thwarting of an assassination and an insight into the deception.

The last scene is one worthy of LOTR as Galar and Eridanus confront the Master of Insanity atop his dark tower. Some questions are answered but more are birthed, and the curtain is pulled back to reveal a glimpse of the full power of darkness about to be unleashed on all that's good in the world. Can truth and light prevail? You'll have to keep reading the trilogy to find out!

I participated in an essay writing contest based on this book and as I won first place in the international competition I was gifted with a trip to the U.K where I spent a fabulous month with the twin authors, their parents, and brother and sister, all the while exploring various English writers alongside other young writers. I visited and housed in Oxford and Cambridge Universities as well as l learned different perspectives as to how we view life and God in the C.S Lewis Conference.
This book was great, definitely awesome for being their first book, and looking forward to reading the next two books.

Als Jugendliche habe ich diese Trilogie geliebt!

Jetzt ein paar Jährchen später merke ich in jedem Satz, dass das Buch von Teenagern geschrieben wurde und es stört mich stark.

Die Handlung der Geschichte wäre eigentlich spannend, wird aber viel zu langsam vorangetrieben. Viele Kapitel beginnen mit "Sie standen früh auf und assen" und enden mit "Dort bereiteten sie sich ein Lager und schliefen ein". Mit den Figuren kann ich nur teilweise mitfühlen. Und um nicht ständig den Namen Bryn zu schreiben, benutzen die Autoren das Nomen "der Brauer" (was für due Geschichte nur wenig Relevanz hat), was mich mit der Zeit sehr stört.

Darum: Für Teenager (von Teenagern) super! Aber für erwachsene Fantasy-Liebhaber ist das leider nichts...

Nun ja. Die Grundidee ist ja nicht schlecht, aber das Ganze ist noch recht unausgegoren. Die Sprünge im Handlungsstrang sind manchmal schwer nachvollziehbar und die Kohärenz der Geschichte iist nicht immer gegeben. Auch klingt der Schreibstil mitunter ziemlich nach Kinderlektüre. Und es gibt mal wieder kein richtiges Ende, da es wohl der Auftakt zu einer Serie ist. Das ging leider aus dem Titel nicht hervor. Die Autoren haben wohl Potenzial, dieses bedarf aber noch einiger Entwicklung.

I really really enjoyed reading the book. This was one of my holiday reads, and picked it up as I love reading fantasy books. What I particularly liked is how the book was able to give life to the words, how it made imagination so easy, and how picturesque it was!

Solita brodaglia stile Tolkien senza un grammo di originalità o di brillantezza, dispersivo e noioso nello stile oltre che ingenuo e raffazzonato nella trama - e la giovanissima età degli autori non fa che esaltare questi difetti. A un anno di distanza dalla lettura, stento a ricordarmi di cosa parli.
