New York Times bestselling author Hannah Howell returns to the Highlands of Scotland for a sensual new series about two twin brothers both tempted and tormented by their passions--and driven by the love that will shape their destinies. . .

Sir Artan Murray was right when he decided that the dying old man who bid him collect his niece didn't know her at all. The furious woman facing him is neither "sweet" nor "biddable." She demands the brawny Highlander return her to the wedding party from which he took her. But Artan has no intention of allowing so spirited and bewitching a creature to endure a loveless marriage to a ruthless lord for her clan's sake. He aims to woo the lass and to show her that true love also yields unforgettable pleasure. . .

Cecily Donaldson knows a bond forged by danger and desperation cannot endure. But Artan's touch leaves her breathless, and she knows this to be her one chance to experience true passion before an arranged marriage seals her fate. A good read. Could have ended a whole lot quicker and with less drama. Artan had two opportunities to kill the bad guy and didn't so everyone was in preilous danger at the end.

Artan was hot and had a great sense of humor. Cecily was ok very niave at times. The bad guys were bad, but it seemed to settle fast without explanation at the end.

Good read but not great.

Received an ARC from the publisher through NetGalley.

3 stars.

The hero Artan is one of the second generation Murrays and the heroine Cecily is the niece of his Highlander foster father, a distant relation. Artan is also a twin. For some reason, my last few books have all featured twins!!!

Cecily is a bit of a Cinderella, living in the keep inherited from her lowlander father with her cousins/guardians who treated her cruelly. Artan was asked by his foster father to bring Cecily to him and dangling his lairdship as a lure if he marries Cecily. But when Artan finds her in the midst of preparing for her wedding to an English knight, he charms and then kidnaps her back to the highlands, with the Englishman in high pursuit.

I found both Artan and Cecily's characters a bit wishy-washy. It's enough of an entertaining tale but I got to say they could have routed the villain a lot sooner rather than dragging it out.

This book pleased me very much. Even though Artan is the only one in the series to marry an actual cousin (distant or not.. and not THAT distant, by the way).., they match each other well. Cecily is kind of irritating at times, but I love her fire and 'unladylike' tendencies. Artan has been a favorite character in the series and I was excited to finally get to his. THIS story fit his character very well. (Unlike the one with his brother).. He kept his usual arrogance and wildness as well as his sarcasm.. and even showed his more serious side when needed. Courting the girl away from her betrothed and then kidnap her is exactly the type of thing Artan Murray would do. The love between Artan and his Sile was strongly felt, I think more than any other story in the series so far. The way she kept talking to him while he was in a coma until her voice was almost gone was so touching. There was so much I loved about this story, i don't even know where to start.. so I wont.. lol.. I will just simply say it was a good read!!!

Entertaining story with at times amusing dialogue, although not dreadfully deep. The hero is a caricature of brawny warrior, who has almost superhuman abilities to defeat the endless stream of assassins sent his way in cartoonish fighting scenes without his kilt going askew. Well, except for the one time when he nearly died fighting ten or so opponents, because the eight sent the previous attack did not do much more than mess up his locks. The heroine is a wee bit muddled about a lot of things, which to be fair is partly due to being brought up by crazed and abusive relatives. However, it still got a bit tedious with her swinging like pendulum for and against the hero and switching personalities like undies. I do like the uncle, Angus, who is a more consistent and warm character. All in all, it was enjoyable without being engrossing.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me the opportunity to review this, although my opinion is my own.

"A sheltered lass who has been convinced that she is worthkess gets to come to this beautiful spot, in the moonlight, and have the handsomest mon she has e'er seen not only make love to her but steal her away because she is in danger." p.332, loc.4224

Author: Hannah Howell
First published: 2006
Length: 351 pages, 4428 locations
Setting: Scotland, 1480. (Lowlands and Highlands)
Sex: explicit, reasonably frequent. First (complete) time post handfast.
Heroine: Abused from around the age of 10 by guardians/Evil Cousins - physically, emotionally, economically. They were prepared to marry her to a known rapist/abuser for their own money/security.
Series: Book 13 of Howell's Murray series. Book 3 of Cameron family sub-series (although sister Isla had her story told in "Highland Groom", cousin Ewan had his in "Highland Warrior").
Includes: Excerpt from "Highland Savage" by Hannah Howell.

A good book.. but clumsy. For example, the writing around Cecily's healing is forced and immaterial, and there is text or phrases (eating like a piglet) repeated from other books. But the biggest issue I had was the missing plot points. It felt like Howell just didn't bother finishing the book. Malcolm appears... and then disappears. MacInvor appears,,, and disappears. The EvilCousins who had such a pivotal role in the beginning... fade away. Their story, while wrapped up in two sentences during the epilogue, is half-told. What about the priest? What about the jewellery? What was in the carts? How was it all reclaimed anyway? Even Fergus is a caricature who slips away.

It just felt half told.

*sigh*

Howell had some interesting ideas but she failed to write them to fulfilment.

A reasonable book, but disappointing.

*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher*

I read this book years ago and I loved it then, I can't say if there were any revisions to this re-released version, but I loved it just as much as the first time I read it.

Cecily is an orphan living as a poor relation on her late father's estate. She has spent the last 12 years believing that she is a burden to her guardians and has been forgotten by her mother's family. In an attempt to please her guardians, she has agreed to marry a man of their choosing.

Sir Artan Murray has been summoned to the bedside of Laird Angus MacReith. Angus wants Artan to travel to his late sister's estate and bring his niece back to him. He offers to make Artan his heir if he will marry the lass. As the second born son, this is a dream come true for Artan, but he will not agree to marry without meeting Cecily first and deciding if they will suit.

Artan arrives at Dunburn just as Cecily is preparing to marry Sir Fergus Ogilvey. When she sees Artan for the first time, she is captivated. Artan is just as taken with her. He tells her he has been sent to fetch her for her uncle. She has committed to marry and tells Artan that she must think about this before she agrees to go with him.

As Artan waits for Cecily to decide, he learns a lot of secrets. Including why Angus has not heard from the lass in 12 years. He also decides that he wants to marry Cecily - not for the promises that Angus made him, but because he wants her.

When Artan overhears the extent of the betrayal of Cecily's guardians and the danger she faces, he decides to kidnap her - for her own good.

Once Artan takes Cecily away and explains the deceit that she has lived with for years, she agrees to meet with Angus. She is not quite sure she believes the tale Artan has told her - but she decides to trust him anyway. When she learns that her betrothed is in on the deceit against her, she claims to be married to Artan and he confirms this.

They travel to Angus' holding and make plans to wed in church, but when Cecily learns what was promised to Artan if he married her - she is heartbroken. Artan doesn't know how to make things right between them and trouble is not far behind as Sir Fergus is not willing to let his rich prize go.
These two have a rough road to their HEA!

The book is well written, steamy, funny, exciting and suspenseful - Artan is a wonderful hero and Cecily is a heroine worth rooting for.

I loved this book and would be happy to recommend it to anyone.

I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Artan is summoned to what seems to be the deathbed of his foster father Angus. Angus has asked Artan to go and retrieve his niece Cecily from her father's cousins who took over her guardianship after his death. Angus also tells Artan if he marries Cecily, all Angus has will be left to he and his bride upon his death.

Artan is upset because not only is she living in the lowlands of Scotland, he wants a marriage forged from love like his parents have. He agrees to go and get her but leaves the marriage open...

Cecily has been raised by her father's family since his death. She can never please her guardian's and her cousin by marriage is especially rough on her. They are once again in the process of trying to marry her off and when Artan arrives he comes upon the beginning of pre-marriage celebrations.

Everyone is horrified to see this "highlander barbarian" and Cecily is actually enjoying their horror, especially when Artan refuses to leave. He sees now that she is not just a meek woman but has some fire in her spirit. When they finally have a chance to talk alone, he realizes something is afoot when Cecily never received letter and gifts from her Uncle and her Uncle never received Cecily's letters. Over the next few days, he overhears conversations that convince him he must get Cecily away from here...if she is to remain alive....even if he has to kidnap her.

I have read many of this authors stories and this one did not disappoint. Both of these characters are full of spirit and fire and are good and just people. They need to survive attacks from the enemy and learning that most of what Cecily thought about her life previously was a lie. She has to learn to trust again.

Her guardian's and Angus were the total opposite. Angus was kind of gruff but always spoke his mind while her guardians were despicable. Angus was a tough guy with a heart of gold. I liked Cecily's old nurse also, she knew Cecily may not believe her but she stayed to protect her.

This is definitely a good reads for Highlander fans!

If you enjoy Highlander historical romances and Cinderella-like tales, you may want to check out Highland Barbarian. Each book in the Murray Family series follows the love life of a different Murray family member and can be read in any order. While this storyline is generally predictable, its feel good message that love can be found in unexpected places, even for individuals who have previously been made to feel less than perfect, makes it a charming tale.

Following the death of her father, Cecily Donaldson is raised in the Lowlands of Scotland by distant cousins who care more for her inheritance than her well-being. Perpetually scheming to find a way to steal her fortune (which they make her believe has been left to them), she is brought-up as a second-class citizen, forced to work with the servants and beaten and verbally abused on a routine basis. Finally, when Cecily comes of age and the opportunity presents itself, they broker a deal with an equally corrupt suitor to obtain part of her dowry in exchange for their consent to her marriage.

Believing that her closest kin, an uncle who is the Laird of Glascreag, is apathetic to her, Cecily is unaware of his numerous attempts to contact her or the many gifts he has sent over the years. Now that he is getting on in years, and still without a son, the Laird of Glascreag decides to send his protege, Artan Murray, to find Cecily, offering to name him his heir if he marries Cecily. Despite this incredibly generous offer, Artan informs the Laird of Glascreag that he will find Cecily and bring her back, but will only marry her if he feels an attraction to her.

Artan arrives just as Cecily’s wedding festivities are commencing. Quickly discerning the despicable situation that Cecily is in, Artan vows to rescue her, irrespective of whether he fulfills his bargain. Convincing Cecily, however, will not be easy notwithstanding the physical connection they feel for one another. Attempting first to seduce her into leaving (and failing), he kidnaps her. Cecily is no docile lass though, and doesn’t believe that her family has been plotting against her, so she tries to escape. Moreover, Artan’s less than straightforward methods and her mountain of insecurities fostered by her cruel cousins, further lead to significant trust issues. Will Cecily ever truly believe that Artan is attracted to her, not just her wealth? Moreover, even if he does desire her, will a barbarian like Artan ever let himself fall in love with her? Add in a villain who refuses to let his golden ticket go, and Artan and Cecily find themselves in a race against time.

While I am a fan of a number of Angela Dawe’s other performances, including Tiffany Snow’s Kathleen Turner series (one of my favorites), this narration was not quite what I was expecting. Perhaps I set the bar too high, given my previous stellar experience with Ms. Dawe’s narrations, but the particular voices she chose for a few characters were not as I would have imagined them. In particular, Cecily’s was deeper than I expected, so much so that at a couple of points I found Cecily and Old Meg (her maid) difficult to differentiate from some of the males. This forced me to rely on dialogue tags, which pulled me out of the story. While I was mostly able to settle in and let the narration fade into the background, I found myself pondering this several times (even at the end). To me, the best narrations are those that call no attention to the performance, allowing me to fully enjoy the romance. Unfortunately this narration did not satisfy that aspect.

Nonetheless, I look forward to listening to future works by Ms. Dawe, albeit perhaps not of Highlander romances, as I have had great success with others. That’s perfect proof that even some of the best narrators may not be suited for every role, at least not to the satisfaction of all.

All in all, I enjoyed Highland Barbarian and found myself cheering for Cecily to triumph over her evil cousins and, of course, for Cecily and Artan’s HEA.

This one's primary protag is Artan Murray, brother of Kiera and Alana of the previous books in the series. This is also one where the back cover doesn't necessarily describe the primary conflict of the story.

Artan's old friend and mentor Angus MacRieth asks Artan to go to the Lowlands and retrieve his granddaughter, Cecily Donaldson. Angus needs a suitable heir, and Artan, whom he sponsored, seems far more suitable than his actual next male kin, weaselly Malcolm. To make it work, Artan needs to wed Cecily, who'll be the actual heir, though Artan, as the husband, will end up with the privilege. As a second son, the offer of a lairdship of his own lands and keep is hard to pass on, but he insists on meeting Cecily first to see if they suit.

Since the death of her father and brother in a raid many years ago, Cecily has lived in the lowlands as a poor relation to her father's cousin and his wife. She's not treated very well, and they're about to marry her off to this chinless, not-too-nice old guy, but she's so eager to please that she's going along until Artan arrives at her wedding banquet.

Another "on-the-run" story, with creepy villains chasing them and a lot of romantic misunderstandings keeping them from connecting in any way that matters. As usual, themes of misunderstanding, hurt feelings, and pride that keeps the two disconnected until the denouement, which, as usual, comes easier than it should. Even so it's a better story than a lot of modern romances, so 4 out of 5.

Artan Murray is sent to rescue Cecily from her greedy relatives' clutches by her uncle Angus, with the promise that he would be able to marry her and be Angus' heir. When he arrives, things are worse than he thought--Cecily is about to be married to an evil, scheming man. What else can he do but kidnap her?

Nicely written, but with very strange pacing. Artan and Cecily make a good couple, but the flow of the story (including the final conflict with the betrothed 2/3 into the story) make the final part seem contrived.

Hmmm. I believe I said in my my review of the last book I read by this author that it was about 50 pages too long, those extra pages coming after the seeming climax of the story. Well, this book followed the same format and I cannot figure out what the plus is to this strategy. I also spotted a few too many errors that slipped by the editors, which is a little annoying. There were some things to like in the plot and characters or I wouldn't have finished the book, but I think I will take a break from the "Highland" series before tackling the last one residing in my TBR closet.

Artan Murray is one of the more interesting males in the Howell Highlanders series. He is offered the lairdship of Glascreag if he marries the current laird's niece, who lives in the lowlands with her guardians. Artan walks into the commencement of her wedding ceremonies and, of course, is not going to let that happen. he kidnaps his future bride and returns her to the highlands and her uncle. During the trip he finally convinces her that the prospective groom will end her life at a convenient time, so that he may access her wealth. He also manages to handfast her into marriage.

Continuing the Murray Family Sage, Highland Barbarian focuses on Artan Murrey who was introduced to readers in the previous book. Being slightly dissapointed w/ the last book in this series, I was hoping for that something more from this one, and found it. Overall I found the story sweet and an enjoyable, easy read. I thought the H and H were well matched, and loved watching them succomb to the power of love. I look forward to Lucas's story in the next book. I am still recommending this book and the series to other fans of historical romance.

This was a cute read. Another one in the Murray family, but they do not need to be read in order. All the Murray's are raised well and are honorable men and women. The first Murray book is "Highland Promise" with Eric Murray and Bethia. They marry and the rest in the Murray series are about their kids and grandchildren. I enjoyed the Murray books by this author the most. Good characters, but they all seem to have a similar theme/ending.

Sir Artan Murray is on a mission--to possibly find a bride as well as heir to her lands. The 2nd intrigues him enough to go on this mission to the lowlands to collect the neice of his foster father. His fate is sealed almost from the moment he meets Cecily--he knows that she is the one for him. Now he must just convince her of that, while keeping her safe from the guardians who seek to steal her inheritance and steal her away from the evil man they have betrothed her to.

This was a most fun novel. I really loved the character of Artan Murray. The rest of the characters were well formed as well. The only real problem I had with the book was the character of Cecily. She was doing well up till the end when she reverted back to her original self. It didn't seem like she really would do that and just seemed like Howell needed another reason for conflict. I really could have done without it. Overall, this was an enjoyable read and I recommend it.

The story of Artan who is sent to collect his clan leader's niece. Her Aunt and Uncle who are controlling her will not let her go. He kidnaps her from her pre-wedding celebration (an arranged marriage that she does not want) and they fall in love. But when she gets to her Uncle, she has to decide if Artan married her for love or to become the next leader of the clan.

This is the story of Artan Murray and Cecily Donaldson. As her sickly aging Uncle wants to make her his heir of Glascreag. Definitely not his worthless spineless nephew Magnus, who would not take care of his lands or the people.

Artan was suspicious of the old bugger and with good reason. He wanted Artan to become Laird of Glascreag, through marriage to his niece Cecily. Yes,it had it's merits, as he was the second son born minutes after his twin Lucas. Then his stomach rolled when he found out where she was living! As she had been raised and lived in the bloody lowlands! Plus he would never agree to marry anyone without meeting them first.

Let me just say this damsel, Cecily is the heroine that saves the day when Artan is in dire need. She is not the lass her Uncle describes as sweet and biddable, especially when she makes demands of Artan. Yet he still keeps on the right track as no lass deserves a loveless marriage!

Yet the tables turn to love as Artan and Cecily spend time together.Who could not love a lass who saves him? Will it be enough to marry her? Does she even want to leave her home and live in Glascreag and get married?

Plus she is supposed to be married to Sir Fergus by relatives who want to steal her fortune! Was Artan too late or does he save the day with this dire news? How will Cecily respond? Though you can feel the sparks between these two, right from the first kiss. What a kiss it was too! You will have to read this marvelous story to find out.

This is the 13th book in the best selling Murray Family Series by Hannah Howell. I have been reading Ms Howell’s books for years always a great treat. This was originally released in 2006 but was revamped with a new cover for 2017. I love re-reading Hannah Howell’s novel’s as she has been one of my favorite authors for a couple decades! I have to admit The Murray Family series is my favorite! Always a delight to read from start to finish.

I highly recommend Highland Barbarian by Hannah Howell and read all her books in Murray Family Series. Always amazing and magnificent reads.

If you love Scottish Historical romance like myself, then you definitely need to put Hannah Howell on your must read list!

Amazing dialogue, the setting is timeless and the plotting is brilliant! I was actually waiting with baited breath and anticipation what will happen next.

It was non-stop-action from the beginning to the end! Spectacular novel!

I received a an advance reader copy from the publisher. I voluntarily agreed to do a fair review and blog through netgalley. All thoughts, ideas and words are my own.

Highland Barbarian is the thirteenth book in the Murray Family series by Hannah Howell. It was published back in 2006, but I has missed it. The books in the series can all be enjoyed as stand alones, but those that have read one one or more will come in knowing a little more of what to expect.

Cecily Donaldson knows a bond forged by danger and desperation cannot endure. But Artan's touch leaves her breathless, and she knows this to be her one chance to experience true passion before an arranged marriage seals her fate. Yet once begun, passion cannot be denied nor can a love with the promise to change everything.

Highland Barbarian is more complicated than the blurb leds you to believe. Cecily's guardians are not exactly caring, and are pretty much selling her into an arranged marriage with someone even worse than they are. Artan is a highland warrior trying to help his uncle, knowing he is being manipulated at least a little. I liked the spunk that Cecily discovers inside herself, and the interactions between her and Artan. I think the action and danger is well done, but there were about three points in the book where it could have been wrapped up satisfyingly, but it just kept going with another crisis. I did like how Cecily and Artan handled each crisis, and how Angus and the rest of their extended family acted.

Highland Barbarian is not a surprise in the Murray Family series. It is an enjoyable read, but nothing that stuck out at me. Fans of the author will get exactly what they like and are looking for- a nice weekend read.

I received this book from net galley for an honest review. Thank you!!

This novel was a good read. I enjoyed the author's writing and the plot of the story. This story is a romance novel in the Highlands, but includes some adventure.
Sir Artan Murray has trained with Angus MacReith and he is asked to return his niece to Glascreg since Angus is "dying". Artan agrees to bring her back before Angus dies. Angus has ulterior motives for bringing his niece back, which include making Artan his successor instead of his cousin.
Cecily Donaldson has been raised in the Lowlands after the death of her family. They were killed and there is much to the story then what appears. Her cousins who "raised" her want her to marry Sir Fergus Ogilvey. Fergus is blackmailing her cousins. However, much of this has been hidden from Cecily. She has been seeking approval from her family and believes this will help by accepting this marriage.
Artan travels to the Lowlands to being Cecily to her uncle and when he meets her, he has a strong feeling that she is the one for him and after he kisses her, he knows it to be true. Artan discovers the plans Fergus and her cousins have in store for Cecily and he "kidnaps" her. Artan has not told Cecily of her uncle's plans. When she finds out that Artan will be her uncle's heir when he marries Cecily, she is deeply hurt. She has been hurt deeply by her cousins and Fergus. Will Artan and Cecily be able to work past these lies?
Fergus however, has not given up that he will marry Cecily and get her inheritance. When he captures Artan, he demands Cecily give herself up to save him? Will Cecily save Artan, but more importantly, if she does, what will Artan do to get her back?
The only thing I wish the author went into detail on was what happened with her cousins and Dunburn. I would have enjoyed reading how they were able to take back the estate and go more into depth about how they were able to prove the treachery her cousins did.
