When Logan Sinclair turned his back on his home, his family and the prosperous Racing Stud of Darkhaven and vanished… he also turned his back on Piper and her love … and his return after ten long years is greeted with suspicion and distrust and he finds the good people of Cambridge have long memories … there’s no way he can escape the ghosts of his past, the woman he left behind, or the grief that threatens to bring him to his knees …. He’s heard it said often enough, that you can never return home…and he quickly comes to realise that he’s compounded his mistakes by doing exactly that…
After a lifetime of living in rural New Zealand this has provided a rich base for my stories.
I have always written and for many years freelanced for metroploitan and regional newspapers.
I write romance because I love delving into human relationships. It is these relationships in all their diversity that make the human race so fascinating.
I've been asked why Romance and my answer is always: I write romance because to me first and last, family matters.
An enjoyable, quick read! I liked the characters, especially Logan, and had empathy for their individual trust issues. Of course, they all had their secrets to hide as well :) Whenever a storyline involves the reuniting of a couple who haven't seen each other for years and years, sign me up! This had a predictable HEA ending, but the journey getting there kept my attention. The conversation flowed, which is always a must to keep me reading a book. The ending seemed a bit rushed though.
This is the second book in Shirley Wine's "Darkhaven" series. Although it is a stand alone, I wish I would have read book one (Tell Me No Lies) to have a better understanding of the secondary characters, especially Logan's brother, Keir, and their family dynamic.
*I received a copy of this book, via Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review*
Logan returns home with his children after leaving abruptly years ago still bearing secrets 0f his past and encounters his old girlfriend, Piper , who has secrets of her own. These two must come to truth about the past to make a future as intrigue abounds. This was a new author for me and enjoyed the setting and the family dynamics with the characters. Will be looking for her other books in this setting.
There was so much I liked about this story and much that was questionable. The read was a non stop emotional twirl of heartache, outrage, simmering chemistry with second chances high on the list of maybes. This is the second book in the series from author Shirley Wine. So many likeable characters, but many reactions by some of them were often dubious and many times over the characters were so hot and cold towards each other it often left this reader mystified in many chapters throughout the story. A tumble of feelings for this story but the likeability of some of the characters/moments won out in the end. Review copy received from Escape Publishing for an honest rating
This story was in a compilation of "small town Heart" stories... 3 in 1 Australian best sellers, so I was surprised to start reading it and find it's based in one of my local town's (FYI Cambridge is not a small rural town, it's almost merging with Hamilton now due to the Waikato expressway, and new house's are actually being built on what once was Horse stud's 😞, but it is still a meca for racing stud's and as always in most NZ town's with farming or equestrian hubs a place for gossip and secrets) but I had to chuckle at how the author writes the town as if it's small like the Australian stories it share's the book cover with... Cambridge is the go-to town for posh shop's, cafe's and restaurants, on a sunny day, it's hell trying to get a parking spot! Oh, there definitely are big stud's, with fancy house's though, I've even been to a couple well the stable yards 😂. The romance was a second chance romance and gosh the backstory was sad, I'm glad it's got a happy ending. I guess it being set in a town I know just made my brain single out those irregularities but overall I enjoyed the book.
