Steel City #2

Faking Time

Rate this book
Arden Doll is just trying to survive.

Between keeping a roof over her head and financially caring for her sick father, Arden rarely has time to do anything besides work and sleep. Seeking a night to blow off some steam, she heads out to her favourite local bar in Pittsburgh with her friends, hoping for a lowkey night with a glass of wine.

Carter Forkerro is known for two things: being a defenseman for the Pittsburgh hockey team and getting himself into trouble. Fans of the game have nicknamed him ‘The Beast,’ for a reason. He’s a ‘swing first, ask questions later’ type of guy. Hitting the town with his teammates is routine, but when he spots a certain, familiar redhead being bothered by a man at the bar, Carter feels the need to help her out.

When things get out of control, Carter finds himself with busted knuckles, being taken away in handcuffs. Arden is whisked away by her friends, unable to see the aftermath of the fight that she was in the center of, petrified that a man just ruined his life defending her.

Carter may have finally thrown one punch too many. His reputation and his job are on the line. He needs a saving grace. He needs a life vest.

He needs that redhead to pretend to make an honest man out of him.

Faking Time is a story about divine timing. It’s a lesson about learning to accept help when you need it. Most of all, this novel is about choosing your own destiny. It’s for the girls who don’t want to forgive, no matter how many people tell them to. It’s your life, and you’re allowed to heal however you see fit.

5/5 ⭐️ - I’m not okay (in the best way).

Okay so… Still not sure how I was fortunate enough to be an ARC read for this book BUT Faking Time by Angelia Swan just completely wrecked me in the best, most addictive way. This is her second book, and honestly? She killed it. You can feel the growth in her writing - it’s sharper, deeper, somehow even more emotional - and I didn’t think that was possible after her first book.

Arden and Forkerro…Genius. Absolutely genius. And terrifying. And beautiful. I’m still spiraling a bit. I will forever melt when I hear “Bub”………🥹

There’s romance. There’s tension. There’s grief. And somehow, Angelia Swan weaves it all together with this quiet, breathtaking elegance that stays with you. When i finished I sat there holding the book like, “So… what now? How do I move on??”

If you liked her first book, this one is next-level. If you haven’t read either book yet - what even are you doing??

In short:
💔 My heart hurts
🧠 My brain is spinning
📖 I will absolutely be re-reading

To say that I was honoured to be an ARC reader is an understatement. I was so thrilled when Faking Time appeared on my kindle and I’ve been devouring it ever since.

You want a funny FMC (who also happens to be my sag twin 🫶🏻) and an absolutely charming and hot headed MMC? Look no further because Arden and Carter will be your cup of tea.

I am a sluuuut for a good fake dating relationship. Put these two together and you have constant mouth-watering banter, a love for shelter dogs, and a man who respects the fuck outta women. Mrs. Forkerro raised him well. (Wellll besides the fighting, but you need to take the good with the bad).

Watching Carter slowly break down Arden’s walls and always being so constant for her healed a part of my heart. You can see their love for one another clear as day, and if you’re the older sibling, this one will hit home for you. (As the youngest, we sometimes forget what our siblings had to go through on their own)

Overall, the banter, the writing, the friendships, and the plot will have you locked in. I’m ready for book 3 whenever you’re ready Angelia.

But yeah…you need to read it, as Arden would say “y’know…for the plot” 😏😉

I flew through this book faster than Forker can throw a punch.

Let me start by saying, I don’t usually love the fake dating trope... but this one may have changed my mind. I loved the tension and undeniable chemistry between Carter and Arden. They were both so hot, I was kicking my feet and giggling the entire time.

This was an absolute joy to read. Also as someone who adores dogs (especially rescues) this made my heart absolutely burst with so much love. so THANK YOU Angelia for giving love to our rescues <3

Also, I loved how much Penny and Declan we got to see! Penny will forever be one of my favorite girls, and I’m so glad she got more page time.

And now, entering the chat: a new favorite FMC? Carter’s sister, Ariana, might just be my next soul mate. I adore her and cannot wait to see more of her in future books.

I highly recommend this one. And while you don’t have to read Wasting Time first to enjoy it... you’re kind of doing yourself a disservice if you don’t. But you don't HAVE to listen to me..I’m not your real mom.

This book didn't hit in the same ways Wasted Time did, but boyyyyy did it hit.. kind of like one of Forkerro's swings. Woof.

I laughed. I cried. I stayed up way too late on a work night and suffered the consequences.

I'm so happy to have more peeks of Penny and Declan and the crew. Their story is one I will always treasure. <3

Buuut Arden and Carter. UGHHH. There's nothing fake about my feelings on them. Arden's ENTIRE vibe and Carter's lack of control? Imperfectly perfect. I've definitely been smacked in the face with Forkerro fairy dust. "The most misunderstood seem to have the best hearts, don't they?"

Wanton? My heart.

It still blows my mind I’m lucky enough to get ARCs of Angelia’s work and I’m so grateful because once again I was blown away. There’s a magic to the way she writes characters, relationships and friendships that I absolutely inhale.

I loved Wasted Time but Faking Time holds my heart.
This was a love letter to the girls who push themselves to make everything happen for the ones they love and have a hard time letting others take care of them. Arden is my soul character. And her, Carter and Stinky will forever hold a place in my heart. Obsessed is an understatement.

This was an easy 5 stars from me! I went into this as an interconnected standalone, and now I'm rushing to add the first one to my TBR.

This is found family trope done right. The friendships that Arden makes feel real, and I went through all the emotions with her.
Complicated childhood? Written beautifully. For anyone who has a complicated relationship with a parent, you need to read this book.
Banter and angst? I was kicking my feet reading this. I stayed up so late that my eyes went blurry, and I physically couldn't see enough to read anymore.
Temper and rage? This is one of the best touch her and d!e tropes I've ever read. Carter having anger issues in DEFENSE of women was EVERYTHING. I love him, and I will not hear a single bad word said about him ever.

Where do I even begin? First and foremost, thank you to my pal Angelia for gifting me an eARC of this masterpiece.

Faking Time was SO much fun. The fake dating trope has been around for ages but Angelia somehow made Arden and Forker’s story unlike any other fake dating plot I’ve read in recent years. Their chemistry, tension, and banter was top tier and I just love how Arden was welcomed so easily into the squad. Speaking of which, can we take a moment to talk about Penny and how much she and Declan have healed?! I was giggling and kicking my feet over them every time they made an appearance.

Faking Time is for the girls who are so fiercely independent that they forget it’s okay to ask for help when they need it. I’m no eldest daughter, but I felt myself relating to Arden more than I thought I would. Angelia has a way of crafting characters that are so raw and relatable and I can’t wait to see what’s next for this wonderful little universe ❤

And she has done it again!
5 +++ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this masterpiece!
Did I read the whole thing in one setting and stayed up way too late - yes I indeed did!

This book has it all - the friendships, the relationships are to die for!

The ultimately love letter to and for the girls that struggle with letting anyone take care of them but have the need to make everyone else a top priority and puts everyone and everything before them self 🥺

To top it off, the fake dating and the dogs (iykyk) are just some of the best I’ve read!

Angelia has such a beautiful way of not just writing but telling a story, so my advice to you - go read it is you want a good laugh, a good cry, swooning and a heartwarming story that lets you know it’s going to be alright in the end and that you are allowed to heal at your own pace and that it’s okey to say NO.

I am so beyond lucky to have been chosen as an ARC reader for this second book. I remember being so in love with a Wasted Time that I literally stayed up on work nights to finish the book within 2 days.

However, Faking Time. Wow. Probably one of thee best fake dating books I’ve read in a long time. The way Angelia writes it just pulls you in as if you were apart of the crew.

I wasn’t sure if anyone could beat Penny and Declan but Carter and Arden did just that. This story is for the girls who have a hard time letting people in and taking care of them but finally putting that wall down and realizing it will all be okay.

In my opinion, Faking Time is the best fake dating / forced proximity romance I’ve ever read—and I don’t say that lightly. I’m already a big fan of Angelina Swan, but this book truly sealed the deal for me.

Even though I came late to Wasted Time (the first in the Steel City series), it quickly became a favorite. But Faking Time? It’s on a whole different level.

Arden and Carter’s story is emotionally rich and beautifully layered. Carter comes from a privileged background, while Arden is fiercely independent, carrying the weight of a painful past and a complex family dynamic. Watching Carter’s guarded, hardened shell crack open for her felt so genuine and rewarding.

Angelina does something special with friendship—something I don’t see often enough. The way she writes female friendships is so real. You feel the soul-deep connections, the mirrored personalities, the messy but beautiful loyalty. It’s honestly one of the biggest highlights of the book for me. In fact, some of the lines I highlighted most weren’t romantic—they were about friendship. And that says a lot.

Oh, and let’s not forget: shelter dogs. Yes, shelter dogs. Not just thrown in for fluff—these dogs matter to the story and to the characters, and their presence adds a heart-melting charm you won’t forget.

The banter is sharp, the chemistry is magnetic, and the emotional moments hit deep. If you’re looking for a romance that tugs at your heartstrings, makes you laugh, and reminds you of the beauty of friendship and second chances, the Steel City series—and Faking Time in particular—is an absolute must-read.

There’s nothing fake about how much we love this book.
Eldest daughters — this one’s for us. For the girls who were “so independent,” “so mature for their age,” and who always figured it out alone because they had to. Arden Doll is us. And no one could be more perfect for her than Carter Forkerro — the “Beast” who’s always ready to slay the dragon, whether it’s on the ice or off.
But this time, Forker (as everyone calls him) is facing a dragon he can’t defeat solo. When a fake dating arrangement offers a solution to both his image problem and Arden’s mounting medical bills, they strike a deal. What starts as a performance as Mrs. Faux Forkerro becomes a chance for Arden to drop the walls she’s built and finally realize she doesn’t have to live her life to please everyone else.
Angelia takes these two on an emotional journey — one of personal growth, real friendship, and learning how to be the kind of partner someone needs, even when it’s hard to admit you want it. The way Carter and Arden show up for each other is hot. And so is the spice. We were holding our breath for Rule 4.5 to be broken, and Rule 4.75 absolutely melted our hearts.
This book also gently reminds us that healing looks different for everyone — and that healing doesn’t always require forgiveness. With fantastic supporting characters like Lowesy and Lucky, plus cameos from The Crew, the sense of found family runs strong and deep.
Unforgettable, heartfelt, and sizzling — this story is a love letter to the strong girls who finally learn it’s okay to lean on someone, too.

Thank you Angelina For the early eARC copy!

Faking Time is book 2 in the Steel City series and I ate up book one, so quick and I knew I would love book two just as much. Although the length of her books is intimidating they are still amazing.
Faking time is a Fake Dating story, coving Carter Forkerro and Arden Doll. Carter is known as Pittsburghs hockey, defensemen who can’t keep his hands down on or off the ice—one incident in a bar that tears his reputation to shreds, calls for desperate measures.

Arden, who he was trying to protect agrees to fake date him in order to help his public eye for the simple gesture of helping her with some debt of her dying father.

The fake dating in this book was done so well, with tension that happens after the first kiss and even though they have their abiding contract feeling get jumbled when they start to see who each person really is under their public image.

Carter is the most patient guy, and willing to give Arden anytime of day. He wears his heart on his sleeve and loves his people fiercely. Arden is the oldest daughter who had to grow up too soon, Carter sees that she’s been carrying the weight of the world and her sisters since she was way to young and does everything in his power to lessen that stress for her.

I knew I was going to love Carter for the patient and kind love that we saw glimpses of in book one, but he surprised me so much!!

Tropes:
-fake dating
-oldest daughter
-he falls first
-nurse x hockey player
-low spice
-public image recovery
-for the plot.

ARC Review; Thank you to Angelia for selecting me to be a part of this ARC team!

I adored this book from page one. Carter is a hot-headed, impulsive Aries (like me!) and Arden is the textbook oldest daughter who’s been parentified for far too long and doesn’t know how to ask for help—even when she's drowning (Also like me!). Thrown together after a bar fight forces Carter to clean up his image, and Arden, deep in medical debt thanks to her estranged father, agrees to a fake dating contract. What could go wrong? (Spoiler: everything, in the best way.)

Their chemistry was off the charts and the banter had me laughing out loud. Every time they clashed, you could feel the sparks. And oh my heart—the emotional beats hit just as hard. Between the grief Arden coped with, Carter's struggle with anger, Penny missing her crew, and the puppies at the shelter (I'm talking about you Wanton!), the emotional depth this story holds is incredible.

I also loved seeing the old crew again ( I UGLY CRIED at the message in the bottom of the coffee cup (iykyk).)—Angelina M. Swan writes interconnected characters so well, and it felt like coming home. But more than anything, what I appreciate most is how Swan writes her books as love letters to female friendship and the quiet, powerful strength it takes to be a woman in the world today. The emotional journey, the growth, the vulnerability—this one gave me everything I wanted.

5 glowing stars. I’ll be thinking about Carter and Arden for a long time.

What an absolute stunning second book. Arden and Carter’s story was so completely different from Declan and Penny’s, but it flowed seamlessly into the same time line allowing us to get more of their story, and see some of our favorite people from book one.

Carter and Arden’s story is a true testament to not judging a book by its cover and truly getting to know someone and not letting public opinion sway your thoughts. From the very beginning I never questioned Carter’s intentions, he truly is a good person. He is who I would want protecting me, he is who I would trust if I was walking alone at night.

Arden’s story is extremely heartbreaking. Knowing everything she did to be a mother figure for her sisters, and knowing her father never once appreciated it or cared for her had me in tears. The way Carter took care of her in every situation was so special.

I absolutely loved the tension between Carter and Arden, the way they always found themselves in dire situations so they could follow their contract.

Penny and Declan’s friendship with Carter was exactly what you would expect from those two. They know exactly how to take care of one of their own. The way they accepted Arden and took her in was amazing.

I can’t wait to see where this series goes. I will be thinking about this book for a long time!

I was so excited to read a book by a fellow reader I've known for a long time, and now, seeing her shine in her new but well-deserved role as an author is so heartwarming. I'm so glad she took that step and has now written two books because she is incredibly talented! I was hooked from the first chapter.

I laughed out loud on a plane, some people looked at me like I was crazy, but then saw I was reading. I expected it to be funny and witty because that's her personality, and it shines through on her social media, but it was also so emotionally deep. Some topics hit so close to home, and I cried more than once while reading this book. Honestly, I'm such a fan of her writing style, and I find it even better than that of many authors who have been on the market longer than Angelia. She's truly born to share her stories with others.

I wouldn't change a single word in the book, I loved every page of it. If you want to read a great indie book, take a chance on this one, you'll be obsessed just like I am. From now on, this author can't run away from me, she's stuck with me.

It's an interconnected standalone, so you don't have to start with the first book. It's an easy five-star read.

Ladies and gentlemen… she has done it again. Another amazing book.
I recommend reading the triggers before starting the book. Some topics include family death and violence.

Carter and Arden’s story was so beautiful. Another such realistic story. Obviously not all relationships are fake dating… however the struggles they have in their lives and what they deal with are so real and happen to so many people.

The banter alone had me giggling. The way that Carter wants to care for her and Arden doing the same for him just made my heart so happy.

AND STINKY. Omg my favorite part was how special that moment in her bedroom with stinky was.

Did this yet again pull at my heart strings? YES no doubt in that.

Would definitely recommend to those that like fake dating, sports romance specifically hockey, and those who are willing to read about people going through hard times and coming out as a better version of themselves.

I cannot wait for more of this series. I cannot wait to see who we learn about next. This group of big hockey players are my new favorite group and I just need more of them.

✨ ARC Review ✨

Angelia really knows how to tug on your heartstrings. I wanted to give Arden a hug so many times throughout the book and let her know how amazing she is. Also, side note, absolutely love the name Arden!! Arden was dealt such a shitty hand at life and still put everyone she loved before herself and her feelings. She is truly a saint.

Carter is such a protector and I absolutely loved him. He is so much more than people make him out to be and is so misunderstood. Carter is exactly who Arden needed.

Seeing Arden & Carter’s fake relationship turn into a friendship into a real relationship was so beautiful even in the ugly moments. The growth of their chemistry was so natural and there were times I didn’t even realize they were still “faking”it.

What I’ve learned from reading now two Angelia books, she really hits you in your feels. She also will stress you tf out with situations 😂 But it really makes for such an amazing book & story!

I loved seeing some of the crew from Wasted Time in this book as well 🫶🏽

Thank you Angelia for my arc of Faking Time! ♥️🍷

I was unbelievably lucky to receive an eARC for Faking Time, thank you to Angela for selecting me to be a part of your ARC team!

I loved this book from the very first page! Carter and Arden 😍

Faking Time is a beautiful slow burn that has well developed characters that grow together as they tackle different life events and trauma, individually but more importantly together even when they feel like they should be going through it alone.

This has me laughing out loud, kicking my feet and swooning at these characters. It was great to see Declan, Penny and the gang from book one and be introduced to new characters.

A HEA story that shows everyone heals in different ways and needs different support as they work through situations.

This is my first book by Angelia and I really enjoyed it! Carter and Arden are pushed together when he punches someone defending her honor and she agrees to be his fake girlfriend for good press and to stay on his hockey team. Despite Carter getting in to a lot of fights with others he has a soft spot for Arden. I like how Angelia made her a strong character who has had a tough life but did not need a man to protect her.

I really enjoyed the secondary characters especially Declan and Penny. The care Carter has toward Arden made him a great book boyfriend, I enjoyed how he acts like a big tough guy on the ice but was a teddy bear toward the people he cares for. I am definitely looking forward to more of Angelia's books in the future!

PLEASE do not let the length of time it took me to finish fool you—life’s been busy and your girl passes out the second she cracks open a book before bed.

ANGELIA DOES IT AGAIN!!
Her writing style has my whole heart. She just knows how to pull you in and keep you hooked.

Faking Time had me YEARNING for the day I have someone who shows up for me the way Carter shows up for Arden—and honestly, for everyone he loves. He’s that perfect mix of protective, steady, and soft in all the right ways.

The banter, the humor, the spice, the romance—literally every one of my favorite things wrapped into one book. Angelia gives us characters who feel alive, dynamics that make you giggle and swoon, and moments that stick with you long after you’ve put the book down.

She did it again! So many ups and downs! You never know what’s about to happen next! Just the way I like it! I wasn’t sure what to expect with Arden, ya know…with everything we knew in the first book but I love Arden’s character! This book felt personal for me. I was the Arden In my family. My parents didn’t pass away but I was the oldest taking care of the siblings while they worked, so I completely understand that feeling. And Carter taking care of her and her needs!? 10/10 book boyfriend! Ladies…get you a man that defends you like Carter! 😉
I also was a big Wyatt fan in the first book so I am so grateful to see Wy living a happy life in this book ❤️

If you love incredible character development with people you seem to relate to, this is your book. If your trope is faking a relationship, this is your book. If you are looking for a book that can bring you to the edge of madness, tears, elation, and peace, this is your book. Angelia has a way of pulling you in to her writing and never wanting to let go. Wasted Time (first book) was an incredible read. You don’t necessarily have to read that one before this one, but you should a) because it’s fantastic and b) you can understand the relationship dynamic of the people mentioned. I was a big fan after the first book; after reading this, she’s gained a lifelong fan.

I was waiting for this book since Carter first entered the story in the first book, and O.M.G!!! 🫠
I absolutely loved everything about this book, from the characters, the tropes, the story, everything!!
Carter is just a perfect MMC with so much depth and a great character arc and growth! And sweet Arden, has a very special place in my heart now 🥹 she deserves to be protected at all cost! She is for the ones who have been through a lot from life, specially eldest daughters.

I highly recommend this book and this series, and cannot wait for the next book!!!!!

I had the pleasure of receiving an ARC of Faking Time. Thank you so much Angelia 🥰🩵

I had the privilege of reading this back in January and as much as Wasted Time hurt my heart with finding yourself again in your 30s..
Faking Time was so, much, fun!
Aswell as my fave tropes ever, fake dating, I'm looking at you... it also touched on real life topics again
As the eldest daughter... OUCH

As usual, Angelia's writing is nothing short of a masterpiece. I feel every emotion, every word and the friendship between the characters... never found better

Already excited for Bostons book... gimme gimme!

This book exceeded my expectations. The love story feels realistic, it sucks you in and makes you forget you are reading. Both characters were beautifully written and I could see myself in both of them at different points.
The author touched on serious real life issues and portrayed them extremely well. While the main characters had a happy ending I loved reading a book where not everything ends in sunshine and rainbows but in real pain that people actually experience.
Reading this book felt like coming home, being seen, and being accepted in the best way.
There was laughter, tears and some many beautiful emotions felt and I would recommend this book to anyone!

Thank you to Angelia for an ARC copy of this book.

I absolutely loved Carter & Arden. They have the love that Penny & Declan have, just took them a way different route to get there. The stress of feeling alone in a big city and not being with your family during an upsetting time (also not wanting to be around said family during this time) is alienating. The dislike to love was a journey Arden needed to take to find her person.

I hope we get a Boston & Lemmy story because there is a lot to tell there!!

I love the found family!! And OMG all of the pop culture references had me laughing and giggling. I am so excited for the next book and while I think it is going to be Boston’s book, I really what it to be Saltzy and Wyatt’s! I absolutely love them and want to read their story. I highly recommend this series. Go read this book, for the plot! (Iykyk)

Must read

There is just something about the way Angelia writes that really embeds itself in my soul. Carter and Arden are perfect for each other. I loved seeing more of the gang from the first book, especially Penny and Declan. I read a LOT of books (over 500 last year), only the really good ones stay with me and I recommend Wasted Time and now Faking Time to as many people as I can. Angelia deserves to be one of those viral authors that everyone reads and falls in love with, her characters and writing. Very well done on the 2nd book!
