DEUTSCH HEUTE successfully develops the skills of introductory German students by maintaining a focus on building listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Manageable for two-semester courses, the Tenth Edition covers grammar in a logical sequence. Each chapter contains many function-based activities that focus on specific emotional expressions. Students are introduced to contemporary life and culture in German speaking countries through a cast of recurring characters who appear in the "Bausteine für Gespräche" (dialogues) and some readings and exercises, as well as in the Student Activities Manual (SAM) and tests. The DEUTSCH HEUTE program includes the iLrn Heinle Learning Center. Everything your students need to master the skills and concepts of the course is built into this dynamic learning environment. The iLrn Heinle Learning Center includes an audio-enhanced eBook, assignable textbook activities, companion videos to accompany the new "Video-Ecke" section in the textbook, partnered voice-recorded activities, an online workbook and lab manual with audio, interactive enrichment activities, and a diagnostic study tool to help them prepare for exams.

Although this book is being taught in American or Canadian universities to students who have never encountered with the German language, it is completely suitable for self study as well. After finishing this book, I recommend to start studying Kaleidoskop - another book by the same authors and publisher for intermediate and pre-advance students. I finished this book years ago but from time to time I reread its passages and review its vocabulary.
