Icons of Women's Style

Behind nearly every item in the feminine wardrobe there is a first of its kind that has spawned countless others. While the definitive example—often created by a single—has achieved icon status, its various reinterpretations, season after season, have become fashion staples.

Take Coco Chanel's short, simple black dress first published in American Vogue in 1926, for instance. Vogue predicted that the LBD would become 'a sort of uniform for all women of taste' and, indeed, it proved to be one of Chanel's greatest contributions to fashion.

Icons of Women's Fashion examines, item by item, the most influential and legendary garments and accessories – their provenance and history, the stories of their design, the celebrities who made them famous, and the various ways they have shaped how women dress today.

It was a nice read if you like fashion history. There were a lot of typos; the items seemed chosen at random.

This is a great book to delve into. Some of it was a trip down memory lane. Twiggy was in vogue when I was in high school. Mini skirts were fashionable. And, I remember that if a teacher thought the skirt was too short, my friends and I were sent to the principals office, where a ruler was used to measure how many inches the skirt was about the knee cap. If it was too short, we were sent home and told to come back properly dressed.

This book noted various trends such as wrap around dresses, Audrey Hepburn's little black dress, A line dresses, trench coats, tube tops, wedged shoes, large hopped ear rings, and pant suits. It was a pleasant book filled with lovely images.

Meryl read Aug 2016 - beautiful book with a great balance between coffee table decoration (just pictures, however sumptuous) and analysis - which garment made the impact, when and why.
The writing is spare but to the point and I learned extensively - beautiful book to be gazed upon AND read :) x M
