Alex and his friends from Artimé are stranded on a newly discovered island after barely surviving a storm that destroys their ship. And it turns out they’re not alone…
Back in Quill, Aaron’s power base grows as he aligns himself with an unlikely ally. Together, the two enact a drastic, risky plan to finally conquer Artimé—a plan that could ultimately leave everyone in both Artimé and Quill in far more danger than Aaron realizes.
Lisa McMann lives and writes in the Phoenix area. Her newest middle grade fantasy series is called The Forgotten Five. Book one, Map of Flames, was an instant NYT bestseller. It's about five supernatural kids, raised in a deserted hideout, who enter civilization for the first time to search for a hidden stash left behind by their missing, criminal parents.
Book two, The Invisible Spy, is on sale now! Book three, Rebel Undercover, is coming summer 2023, and book 4 will be out in spring of 2024.
Also out now: CLARICE THE BRAVE. It's a story of hope against all odds, about sibling mice who get separated in a mutiny and vow to find one another again.
Lisa's other books include the NYT bestselling THE UNWANTEDS and UNWANTEDS QUESTS series, the GOING WILD trilogy, the YA paranormal WAKE trilogy, the VISIONS trilogy, CRYER'S CROSS, DEAD TO YOU, and INFINITY RING: The Trap Door.
Another great addition to the Unwanted series even though I believe his was a kind of filler book because nothing really happened until the last 150 pages where the author just decided to make everything go up in flames with so much twists and sadness. In those last few pages is where I think this book became the darkest in the series so far and I was not expecting that from this series but expect the unexpected I always say. I am enjoying the series very much but I am starting to get a little sick of the Quill story line. It has not changed in five books and I do not see it changing so far in book six but I guess I will need to read and see for myself. All in all, this is probably my third favorite in the series so far and I am excited to read what happens next.
I don't even know what to say… the first half of this book was so uneventful I was starting to get frustrated but then it gets to the second half and UUUGGGGHHHHH I'M DYING. First of all, WHO END A BOOK LIKE THAT?!?!?! And then there was Meghan and I thought Sam died too and it was really sad. Then this was the first book that I actually really enjoyed reading about Aaron. I think he's a really interesting character and his connection with Alex is just really interesting and then I almost threw the book when the guys gave him the seaweed because now he's going to hurt people and WHY DOES EVERYONE HAVE TO THINK HE'S ALEX!!!!! I seriously think I'm going to cry. I don't even know when the next book comes out but I need it RIGHT NOW! And then I'm SOOOOO frustrated with Alex because he just ignores his sisters like seriously, they're his responsibility and now they have the opportunity to have a great childhood and Alex can't even say hi. Wow.
On another note, I don't know about anyone else, but Sky and Alex drive me crazy. It's been awhile since I've read the first few books, but I really shipped Alex and Lani then. Maybe I'm stubborn, but I still think they would be a MUCH cuter couple.
So anyway, you can probably tell that I REALLY liked this book even if it drove me a little crazy and made me want to pull my hair out. I know you've probably already read the book if you're reading this, but I highly recommend it :)

"We're the most despised people in the whole world,' he said. 'Just because we like to create things. No, not just create things, because everyone creates things. The problem is that we create things that they don't think are the right things. And that's what makes us so despised."
This series is always so much fun. It's such an interesting concept and series. The improvement I've seen in Lisa McMann's writing as this series progresses is amazing. I remember that when I started reading this series, her writing felt "transparent", like, I guess you could say that I could see her intentions through the writing. With every book, that's been happening less and less. I think her writing could still be a little stronger, there's definitely room for improvement, but it's so much better than when she first started writing, and I'm really enjoying her writing style.
One thing about this series that has, and still, confuses me, is the POVs. The chapter starts with one POV, and then, sometimes halfway through the chapter when another character is mentioned or something, it switches to their POV. It's just not clear and concise POV transitions, it's just confusing and hard to tell whose POV it is.
Usually, it's not hard for me to tell what's going on in these stories, as middle-grade novels are fairly easy for me to get through. However, some parts were a bit confusing, like the author was rushing through certain parts due to excitement, or something. It was just... confusing.
Maybe you've noticed, maybe you haven't, but this is the first Unwanteds book that I've given 3 stars. The lowest rating I've given. I guess you could say this is because compared to what I've seen, this just wasn't as good as it could've been. I still enjoyed it, but I had a hard time seeing through its flaws.
The plot of this book was exciting, and I was so curious to see what would happen next. It was well-planned and thought out, it was just the pacing and POVs that made it hard to... like? I don't know the word- I did like it, it was just flawed.
The ending was definitely my favorite part of the book. The author writes the battle scenes well, and they're quick-paced and exciting. It was a little sadder than usual, but it was good!
I suppose that this is all I have to say about this book, so now the three questions...
Would I recommend this book/series? Yes! If you're into middle-grade fantasy, yes, but if you're not so much of a fan of middle-grade, this series probably isn't for you. This book definitely isn't the best in the series, but it was still pretty good.
If this was a movie, what would I rate it? PG.
Will I continue reading this series? Yes! I'm excited to see where it goes next!
Easily one of the best in the series, and arguably the darkest. Good balance of character-building and action. I love how relentlessly melodramatic these books can get at times (in a good way, obviously.) The last hundred pages are crazy.
I love this series to much! Most of the time I forget this is children’s fiction because the stakes are so high, and the characters have gone through so much <3
Camden Henson The Unwanteds: Island of Shipwrecks-Lisa McMann
Alex and his friends have survived a dangerous journey over a waterfall. Most of their supplies is gone and their ship is damaged. As they’re sailing they get sucked into a life threatening hurricane that seems to be right over an island. It makes it so everyone has to jump off into the water and swim to shore while their ship crashed amongst the rocks. Back on their home island Artime with the rest of their people, Alex’s twin brother Aaron, the king of Quill, has given his power over to General Blair for the attack on Artime. Alex doesn’t think he can get back in time before war breaks out. In my opinion, the characters and setting in this book do not seem realistic. The characters don’t seem realistic because some of them are statues, some can do magic, while others are just normal. For the setting, all of the islands have something weird about them like one of them sinks underwater and then rises again while another one has people living underground and everyone has a metal thorne necklaces that goes into their throat. Just thinking about it doesn’t make me believe it anymore than it being written down. In this story I think that Alex is the main character. I think this because he is the head mage of Artime and is the leader of their journey to new islands. Plus he is always getting involved with everything like conflicts with his brother Aaron. In my mind Alex has brown hair and because he is still a teenager not that tall. Alex tapped the railing nervously as he considered his options. “We can’t stop here. We can’t,” he said, as if he were trying to convince himself. “We have to put our own people first.” “Of course we do,” Lani said,”but what if someone’s in trouble?” What if our own people are in trouble?” Alex said, frowning. Lani shot him a look. Alex sighed. “Right. Okay, Sim, let’s take a quick ride over the island. See if you can detect any life. I mean, that help sign could be years old. The person who wrote it could be dead by now. Or rescued,” he added. This quote from the book shows how Alex put his own people first but in the end cared enough about other people that he went to check out the island. Like the quote above, it shows how Alex is bold, brave, loyal, and nice. Alex is bold and brave because he had no idea what could be on the island but went anyways to help the people that might be in danger. He is also loyal and nice because he put his people in front of others but in the end gave in to help other people as long as it didn’t interfere with their journey home. This book in my opinion was really good. I liked it because it had everything I look for in a book, mystery, suspense, thrill, and action fantasy. Just like all of the other books in the series are this way. Even though a lot of the things that happened in the book were supernatural and could never really happen I enjoyed it. SPOILER ALERT: In my opinion, the theme of this book is the noble sacrifice for the greater good. I think this because near the end of the book there was a battle Artime against Quill. But in one of the books before this there was also a battle where Samheed had killed General Blair or at least everyone thought he did even the king of Quill, Aaron, thought he was dead and had only recently found out. So because General Blair wasn’t dead, he seeked revenge on Samheed in this book and war. So during the battle Blair snuck up on Samheed and pointed a gun to him and had a knife in the other hand but Sam was able to create a glass shield spell, so when the gun was shot it only shattered the glass. Then Blair tried to shoot it again but it was out of bullets so he threw the gun aside and put his knife in his right hand. He then threw it at Sam just when Sam threw two heart attack spells at him and that’s when Meghan jumped in front of Sam and was impaled and General Blair was hit with the heart attack spells and died. Later on when the battle was over, they found out it was too late and Meghan couldn’t be saved. Thus concluding the theme, the noble sacrifice for the greater good.
This is the fifth book in the Unwanteds series by McMann. This was a good continuation of this series. This is another series I am reading because my son likes it and is reading it and likes to discuss the books with me. There are seven books planned in this series with the sixth book, The Island of Graves, scheduled to come out September 2015.
This book follows a number of different characters. Alex and crew are trying to survive their fall down a waterfall and end up on the Island of Shipwrecks. They are desperately trying to find way home. Aaron is preparing Quill to war on Artemis again. The Artemians are eager for news of Alex’s journey and when rumors of a pending attack by Quill reaches them they prepare for battle.
While this isn't my favorite middle grade fantasy series it is a decent one and has an interesting story. I like the magic in it and there is some excellent world-building here.
The story jumps between a lot of characters, so I have some trouble engaging with the characters and staying engaged in the story. I like reading about Alex and Sky the best. Aaron’s portions of the story are always a bit of a drag to get through. There are just so many characters it is hard to keep track of everyone. This is something my eight year old son also mentioned he said “Mom there are just so many characters I wish I got to read about each one a bit more.” This is one of those books where I think all the POVs are fracturing the story quite a bit.
One of the big revelations in this story is Gondoleery’s plan. She’s been lurking in the background of this series for quite a while and this is the book where her plans and ambitions finally come to light.
This book wraps up pretty well and doesn't end on a huge awful cliffhanger like The Island of Legends did...so I am grateful for that.
Overall a decent continuation of this series. I think if you are a huge fan of this series you will really enjoy this book. I personally have thought all of these books are just okay but continue to read it because my son enjoys them. The main issues with the book are the huge numbers of characters and the multitude of perspectives the story is told from; it just makes it very hard to engage with the characters. There is some excellent world -building in here though and I continue to enjoy the magic use in these books (although some of the novelty of that has worn off as well). If my son continues to read these I will probably read them as well.
After surviving a wild storm Alex and his friends end up stranded on the Island of Shipwrecks. Throughout the book they have to find a way to escape the magical storm that shrouds the island with only moss, rocks, materials from other shipwrecks, and the help of three elderly islanders.
Meanwhile, back in quill and Artime, their home island, Aaron, Alex's twin brother, is stirring up trouble between Artime and Quill. By boldly tearing the wall down, upgrading their military, and learning some magic himself Aaron Stowe, the High Priest of quill is ready to defeat Artime.
Join both twins the 5th book of this award-winning series. Be prepared for a wild ride through the love and war of Alex and Aaron Stowe, and some loyal, or untrustworthy, friends.
How do I even begin to describe my feelings for this book? I'll try to sum it up in as few words as possible. Magical, intricate, colorful, sad, happy, exciting (SOOO very exciting!), and AMAZING! These books are some of the best I've ever read. They're just... Ack, I can't even begin to even! Ugh, this series is making me go into my FANGIRL mode. I can't even finish sentences! I don't know how it's going to be possible for me to wait until book 6 comes out, but I guess I'm going to have to try and survive the wait!
P.S. Alex and Sky are made for each other! Seriously though, if anything happens to either of them, there will be serious consequences. There will be a revolt!
Alex and the gang are marooned on an island, and Aaron struggles to hold onto power in this installment of this wonderful series! As I have said before, the characters in this story are just so fun and loveable. This book gets an extra star for the Japanese characters.
It was great to see Alex try and step up without Simber. This book leaves the reader wondering about the islands and what else might be out there.
There were some sad losses in this story. I can't wait for the next one to come out in paperback!
Island of Shipwrecks was a really good book. It was one of my favorite of the series so far. On the way home Alex and his friends got stranded on an island. TO make matters worse their best protection left and had to go back home without them. Alex needs to figure out a way out of the island but their ship was broken. It almost made it impossible to fix when there were hurricanes every day. All in all that book was really good.
This was an enjoyable read, not as good as the first four in my opinion but still engaging. I am definitely excited for book six and am bummed it isn't out yet!
I need to force myself to focus on the actual story, rather than just the ending which I read less than 5 minutes ago and still has me questioning.
The adventure in The Island of Shipwrecks followed a very similar pattern as Alex’s visits to the previous two islands, which was enjoyable because we got to see new parts of Alex’s world and some more magic. New mysteries are also introduced here which keep the reader excited for the books to come. However, it was Aaron’s part of the story that actually drove the plot forward in I think an equally as thrilling way. I’m usually indifferent to the Quill story arcs but I really liked this one.
As for the ending, I won’t give any specifics, just to say that this was possibly the best ending of any book in the series. I felt all the feels and now worry (in a good way) greatly for what will happen in the next book.
Island of Shipwrecks was definitely a turning point in the series that does the rest of the series justice.
Solid book. Ngl it was kinda boring up until the end. Repetitive and I didn’t super love it. However, the ending got really interesting and it made me super excited for the next book. Also Alex and Sky finally figured it out so that made me very very happy. Probably would be 3.5 if Goodreads had half stars lol.
4.5 stars It took me longer to get though this one, but I love the world and all the characters in it. Even though this is book 5 of the series, it doesn't grow old or watered down at all.
Lots of new developments without answers yet but that makes me want to keep reading the series. I don't want to give any spoilers so this is vague....There was a part involving Florence that was exciting where I couldn't put the book down!
Definitely recommend reading if you’re looking for Percy Jackson or Harry Potter style book series.
As a twin myself I enjoyed how this series, and this book especially, explored the Twin link. I think I would have enjoyed this a lot more when I was younger but I love it now as well.
