Ranma 1/2 (2-in-1 Edition), Vol. 7: Includes Volumes 13 & 14

Rate this book
One day, teenaged martial artist Ranma Saotome went on a training mission with his father and ended up taking a dive into some cursed springs at a legendary training ground in China. Now, every time he’s splashed with cold water, he changes into a girl. His father, Genma, changes into a panda! What’s a half-guy, half-girl to do? Find out what fueled the worldwide manga boom in beloved creator Rumiko Takahashi’s (InuYasha, Urusei Yatsura, RIN-NE) smash hit of martial arts mayhem, presented remastered and unflipped for the first time.

SORE LOSER

Ranma learns what being a loser feels like for once when Happosai applies a strength-sapping technique that leaves him weak as a baby! The humiliation continues for our emasculated hero when the only way Ryoga can rid himself of the “Mark of the Gods” (actually nothing more than a martial arts calligraphy doodle on his stomach) is by losing a fight to Ranma. Fox-Fu…Cat-Fu…Flat-Frog Fu…nothing seems to work against Ryoga! Has Ranma lost his edge for good?

Rumiko Takahashi (高橋留美子) was born in Niigata, Japan. She is not only one of the richest women in Japan but also one of the top paid manga artists. She is also the most successful female comic artist in history. She has been writing manga non-stop for 31 years.

Rumiko Takahashi is one of the wealthiest women in Japan. The manga she creates (and its anime adaptations) are very popular in the United States and Europe where they have been released as both manga and anime in English translation. Her works are relatively famous worldwide, and many of her series were some of the forerunners of early English language manga to be released in the nineties. Takahashi is also the best selling female comics artist in history; well over 100 million copies of her various works have been sold.

Though she was said to occasionally doodle in the margins of her papers while attending Niigata Chūō High School, Takahashi's interest in manga did not come until later. During her college years, she enrolled in Gekiga Sonjuku, a manga school founded by Kazuo Koike, mangaka of Crying Freeman and Lone Wolf and Cub. Under his guidance Rumiko Takahashi began to publish her first doujinshi creations in 1975, such as Bye-Bye Road and Star of Futile Dust. Kozue Koike often urged his students to create well-thought out, interesting characters, and this influence would greatly impact Rumiko Takahashi's works throughout her career.

Career and major works:

Takahashi's professional career began in 1978. Her first published story was Those Selfish Aliens, a comedic science fiction story. During the same year, she published Time Warp Trouble, Shake Your Buddha, and the Golden Gods of Poverty in Shōnen Sunday, which would remain the home to most of her major works for the next twenty years. Later that year, Rumiko attempted her first full-length series, Urusei Yatsura. Though it had a rocky start due to publishing difficulties, Urusei Yatsura would become one of the most beloved anime and manga comedies in Japan.

In 1980, Rumiko Takahashi found her niche and began to publish with regularity. At this time she started her second major series, Maison Ikkoku, in Big Comic Spirits. Written for an older audience, Maison Ikkoku is often considered to be one of the all-time best romance manga. Takahashi managed to work on Maison Ikkoku on and off simultaneously with Urusei Yatsura. She concluded both series in 1987, with Urusei Yatsura ending at 34 volumes, and Maison Ikkoku being 15.

During the 1980s, Takahashi became a prolific writer of short story manga, which is surprising considering the massive lengths of most of her works. Her stories The Laughing Target, Maris the Chojo, and Fire Tripper all were adapted into original video animations (OVAs). In 1984, after the end of Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku, Takahashi took a different approach to storytelling and began the dark, macabre Mermaid Saga. This series of short segments was published sporadically until 1994, with the final story being Mermaid's Mask. Many fans contend that this work remains unfinished by Takahashi, since the final story does not end on a conclusive note.

Another short work left untouched is One-Pound Gospel, which, like Mermaid Saga, was published erratically. The last story to be drawn was published in 2001, however just recently she wrote one final chapter concluding the series

Later in 1987, Takahashi began her third major series, Ranma ½. Following the late 80s and early 90s trend of shōnen martial arts manga, Ranma ½ features a gender-bending twist. The series continued for nearly a decade until 1996, when it ended at 38 volumes. Ranma ½ is one of Rumiko Takahashi's most popular series with the Western world.

During the later half of the 1990s, Rumiko Takahashi continued with short stories and her installments of Mermaid Saga and One-Pound Gospel until beginning her fourth major work, InuYasha. While Ran

Not only does this volume have my favorite arc in Ranma (the heaven’s blast of the rising dragon arc), but it also has some very strong chapter’s following. The Ghost cat and Mark of the battling god arcs are both bangers. This volume really shows off some of my favorite aspects of Ranma. Fun and laughs are had by all.

Definitely one of the stronger installments in the series so far, the first half of this 2-in-1 edition (which I imagine corresponds to volume 13 of the original tankobon volume) features a lengthy segment in which Ranma must find a cure after being sapped of all strength. There’s a lot of clever plot twists as we get a more martial arts focus here. Things even get a bit introspective when Akane tries to attempts to comfort Ranma in noting there is more to Ranma’s personality than merely being strong, and yet, rather humorously-but-perhaps-poignantly , fails to articulate any other positive qualities.
The second half of the volume is well-crafted as well, with the bulk of it devoted to a narrative in which Ryoga achieves superhuman strength at a somewhat dire cost. Although this might sound repetitive in that it also involves Ranma being easily overpowered in the strength department, it provides its own inventive twists and turns to keep things fresh.

*Guy who's primary experience with anime/manga has been Dragon Ball Z * Me: Whoa this is just like Dragon Ball Z!

Okay but in all serious holy SHIT. This series at its heart is generally lighthearted, fun, and goofy, but Takahashi really gets out of her comfort zone here and man does it pay off. The love interests, goofy martial arts, and female fanservice are all put to the sidelines here and what we're left with is a deeply personal arc where Ranma is truly vulnerable (not just outmatched), loses what he values most, and pushes himself to learn the ultimate martial arts technique - the Heaven Blast of the Dragon. And wow. Actually seeing Ranma going through a personal journey like that, submitting himself to Cologne, having Ryoga aid him in his journey, and of course, mastering the Heaven Blast of the Dragon... Great character moments, great execution, and Takahashi's art here is truly a spectacle to behold here with a phenomenal use of shading and paneling. Peak manga arcs right here.

The rest of the book is just dumb filler stuff. But that first half man. Utter perfection

I think I'll write a more comprehensive review in the future, but this volume was definitely one I have enjoyed more so far than others, particularly because I do feel like we see more of Ranma's character depth start to grow and shine in his little interactions with Akane and Ryoga. I think those little moments are some of the best and most necessary points in here.

Always a delight to pick up another volume of Ranma 1/2, just a shame that they are so fast-paced that it is over before you know it. Usual great sense of action and comedy with Takahashi's wiriting and artwork as great as ever.

Obviously with anything Takahashi writes, you know things will generally reset themselves by the end of each little arc, Ranma and Akane will be back to not liking each other, Ryoga will get lost, etc etc but who cares! It's great.

Curious how the initial release lined up with the original anime's air dates. Vol 14 felt like a natural stopping point, while 15 felt like the series slowly becoming less grounded and more willing to experiment with significantly goofier premises.

Ranma has really hit its stride here with increasingly silly short arcs. Bring back Tsubasa though!

Synopsis/Review

Although it's summer and it's so hot that I'm melting the cover of this volume is Christmas.
The volume begins with the chapter of The legendary diabolic moxa, which we can already see that the volume is going to be full of fights and adversities. As we have guessed, the fights continue in the chapters The Hell Spiral Training and The Flying Dragon Punch Explodes. The chapters that I have laughed with have been with those of the master Happosai, although he continues stealing the panties gives a touch of humor to the volume that I like very much.
In this volume, we have a special mini horror book with the chapters The Mao-moling and The ghost cat's girlfriend, although I don't think they are horror books, I liked them. Almost at the end, as there is no special chapter called Ryoga cornered, I had to name it as I like this character very much.
In the end, like the Christmas volume that it is, we have several chapters in which there is a mysterious seal, which is later lost (will they recover it?). And of course, the last chapter is called Santa's Apprentices, which is the one I liked best, all the characters come together and it's great fun, a bit of Christmas spirit in the middle of July never hurts. 😂

Still pretty funny after all this time. Sure, it's formulaic, but it's a formula that works so far, so I can't complain.

I'm also taking more time to appreciate Rumiko's art here because she's a very good artist too (duh).
