When a girl at her school is attacked by what seems to be a vampire, high school student Hinata Sorazono refuses to believe that vampires even exist. But then she meets her new neighbor, Junya Tokinaga, the author of an incredibly popular vampire romance novel… Could it be that Junya’s actually a vampire—and worse yet, the culprit?!

Honey Blood Tale 0 is where Hinata and Junya’s love story originally began. In addition to the one-shot chapters that made Honey Blood’s serialization possible, this volume contains two bonus short stories from the author!

I'd say skip this one if you read the main 2 volumes, it was just kind of boring reading the one shots and stuff after already seeing the real plot play out. The art was still lovely though, really well done!

I'm not sure if I like this series or not.
I decided to read the prequel before the main two volumes and I'm starting to think that was a mistake.
It seems there's 3 couples, and a number of the characters look far too similar.

However, it's short, so I'll give it a try.

Well. That was not what I was expecting.

My one problem with this series is that it just kind of ended without explaining too much of Junya and Setsuna’s history—short series wise, it was fine, but it still ends up being a little too “Wait, what?” for me. And I was kind of hoping that maybe there would be a short story in here to explain things. Instead we get the original three stories that were the basis for Honey Blood and then two bonus original one-shots.

I actually really liked the original stories. I want to know where the decision came in for Hinata to go from major Junya Takemoto fangirl to “NOPE” but I really enjoyed her in this. The stories in here feel more like a sweet vampire romance in the vein of Millennium Snow, in that you have the initial story of the two of meeting, and then Junya & Hinata’s first date (which is surprisingly sweet), and then the final story about making of movie from Junya’s books. The last story of the original three doesn’t fit as well as the other ones, but I still liked it. (I’m majorly disappointed in the fact that vampire hunters are a thing in this series’ history but it’s never touched on. If this had been a longer series, I would have really liked to have seen that.)

The other two short stories are…okay. “A Bouquet of Love for the Princess” is an “Ugly Duckling” story where the tomboy girl figures out that no, she really does like make-up and looking cute for boys! It’s okay, I’m not really a huge fan of it, and I was really plowing through it to get to the end. The other, “First Love, Melting in the Night” I did like a little more, because for the most part, it’s a very touching and bittersweet story about two high school students dealing with the future and that they might not be as close as they used to be.

Yes, I’m still a little disappointed that the story of Honey Blood isn’t as fleshed out as it could have been, but I don’t think that necessarily means it’s a terrible series. And I do like this volume as a sort of alternate universe for these characters, even though Hinata’s change in character doesn’t affect the plot. And the short stories are fine, it’s just I wanted more with the characters from the series, instead of just padding out the rest of the book. It’s an interesting volume, and I would say if you liked the first two volumes, go check out this one.

Honey Blood 0

Honey Blood does decent at portraying childhood innocence against the backdrop of a perhaps questionable love circumstance. I think there’s a lot I don’t care for in Honey Blood, which is why I won’t be continuing it. But much of my dislike comes down to my personal taste. However, there is one element that has me interested; the vampiric element. The way in which Junya simply… exists is something that serves to catch my eye. Not even the lore or the history but his imposing power and the way he can switch his vampiric emananence on or off seemingly at will. His power and abilities interest me.
In terms of Hinata, I don’t see much about her to like or even remember, but she is exceedingly innocent, which seems to be the emphasis for her character. One part stood out to me; the way she wants to show off Junya as her boyfriend, to show everyone how pretty he is. Part of me wondered if I was ever that way. I’m not entirely sure, however, I can empathize with the sentiment to some degree. There have been times with my current boyfriend where I felt I really wanted to show him off, not necessarily for the same reasons as Hinata but that’s precisely the point (if you’re a mature reader such as myself). My reasons feel deeper, her’s more shallow. And while innocence does not inherently equate to lack of depth, it can sometimes find relation in it. This, among many other attributes, help to showcase the innocence which Junya loves so much.

Although… in terms of the p3d0philia factor, looking at it from a traditionalist perspective, their love is the best case scenario. But by modern standards, there’s no angle in which their story is acceptable. But then again, I suppose that fits, since he is a vampire and he doesn’t fit into society any more than their love does.

A Bouquet of Love for the Princess

Pretty fluff, pretty cute. There’s not a lot of substantial details nor elements to name about this one-shot manga. It was pleasant to read.

First Love, Melting in the Night

The mangaka stated that she wanted this one-shot manga to illustrate the frustrations of poor communication but that based upon reader reviews, she might have failed to accomplish that. I have to agree; this one-shot doesn’t give off this type of feeling. More so, after finishing it, it gives off the feeling that if you don’t say what needs to be said, it might be too late.
Out of all five chapters in this volume, this one-shot was maybe the best one. But the way the mangaka talks down on herself to the reader in almost all of her author notes… leaves a bad taste in the reader’s mouth.

2,5* Aprobado raspado

DNF. It was just… really boring. Usually dark or weird stories like this are interesting to me, but I found myself dozing off while reading it. Even the problematic themes don’t feel all that interesting.

Also, no, the book isn’t pedophilic. Pedophilia is pre-presence. Please don’t water down that word. It’s fine to be uncomfortable with the adult/teen relationship (and we all know that would be completely unacceptable IRL) the book portrays, though.

I think I’ll just skip this manga.

This was fine. I haven't read the series and honestly the little shorts didn't hook me quite enough. I have however borrowed volume 1 so you haven't lost me yet. The one shot extra stories were better honestly. I need to read some one shot romance compilations, I'm interested after this.

3 stories I'll forget out of 5 maybe baby series

I remembered really enjoying this series before so I picked this one up at the library. It was sweet, but the main story was just a “teaser” of the series I already read. There were two other one shots included, though, and both were super adorable.

This Tome is only a previeuw with little side-stories from the authors non-published books. It was really hard to discover this story , So it will probably be harder to find the 3 other Tomes ! But if you really like old mangas this will be your taste

This is the beginning of the story that was originally told in what becomes book 1. It's much better in book one. This really doesn't have anything fleshed out and some of the sub stories are ridiculous. But book one and two really flesh out those stories almost to the end.

I enjoyed the two bonus short stories more than the origin for Hinata and Junya's love story lol. I think the author is great at illustrating and has great ideas but the pacing needs work.

Honey Blood collects the original short story, two side stories, and then two non-related one shots. From the author's comments, these stories were the basis of the 2-Volume Honey Blood story and were not intended to further explain or expound upon the abruptly ended series. They are more like throwaway chapters that could have gone into volumes 1 or 2. The two extra non-related stand alone stories are, unfortunately, just as forgettable.

The first one shot is an overview of the Honey Blood story - it is like a summary episode in the middle of a tv series where they show clips from the previous episodes. I believe this is the original Honey Blood story, written many years previous and early in Mitsuki's career.

The second one shot is about Hinata going on a date with Junya and showing him off to her friends.

The third One Shot has Junya become possessive and jealous when an actor playing the part in one of the movies made from his book hits on Hinata. He hopes to seduce her with his movie star good looks and get her to influence Junya to look more favorably on him. Junya is not amused.

The fourth one shot is a stand alone with the improbably story of a handsome school boy who likes makeup and says he is in love with a plain tomboy and wants to fix her up.

The last story is a tragedy about a boy and girl who miscommunication their feelings and don't resolve it until it is too late.

For me, nearly all the stories lack strong storytelling skills. The depth and breadth of emotions never seem to be conveyed and so the stories come off as pat or cliche. Even the tragedy was abrupt and hardly moving.

If you absolutely loved Honey Blood, I could see getting this book. But otherwise, this felt weakest in the series.

~3.5/5

After the last volume, which ended with still lots of questions, I wasn’t sure what to expect with this. I knew that it was the first draft of what became the two volume series, but still.

I was surprised with how much had actually changed. The first three chapters are the prequel story, and in them, Hinata is a completely different character. Instead of being pessimistic about love and off-put regarding the novels, she’s a hopeless romantic, who immediately falls for Junya. It could have been a very different story this way, and I’m not sure which route I liked better.

I will say, though, that this story is much more rushed, with a lot less development to story and character. Junya is still pretty similar, and I’m still not really in love with him. The last chapter, where Junya kind of outs himself in public, kind of bothered me.

But it was actually the last two one-shots that I enjoyed. The first one, starring a fashion-friendly guy who falls for the tomboy, was just adorable. It was charming and well-done, and so cute. The second one, about two childhood friends who keep hiding their love to each other, was also very cute, but it had a very unhappy ending that almost ruined it for me. I don’t think the ending needed to happen, honestly.

Above all, this wasn’t too bad of a one-shot volume. It doesn’t have to be read with the original series, and I actually enjoyed it for the most part.

This volume is a bunch of one-shots/side stories that take place in the world of Honey Blood. While these short chapters round out some of characters a little, some of the stories do not seem to be connected and the final chapter/story I really felt was not complete or a definite end was not fully given. I can make some assumptions but it left me wondering if I was right or not.

Overall the illustrations are lovely as always to look at and the stories are cute but this volume was just ok in my opinion.

I received this advanced copy from VIZ Media through Edelweiss in exchange for my honest review.

While the non-series short stories in the back were okay, this was just in general the kind of series that made me say, "Eh. It exists and I read it." While the vampire mythology is interestingly different, there just isn't much about any of the three Honey Blood volumes to make them worth recommending.

The consent was interesting. It’s about a vampire, one they kiss their lover, they can’t drink anyone else’s blood. That’s is something I’ve never seen anywhere else.

But this book didn’t follow through. There was no build up in the “relationship” between Hanata and Junta. In the first 5 pages they are now in a relationship with Junta only able to drink her blood.

And I didn’t get the kissing part. Is it only if you kiss someone you love? What about someone you don’t love but they kiss you anyway? Does that count?

While we are on the topic of this contact by kissing, should you tell the person you love about it before you do it? Because if they don’t love you back you kind of doomed yourself.

The characters themselves I felt were lacking any depth. Hanata is you typical 15 year old with their first crush. Junta is rude, and acts like sex isn’t something you can help. He gets turned on by her and how she has to take responsibility even if she doesn’t want to. Very much a rape vide going on.
