The first few manga chapters in this volume were confusing because of weak plotting and weak art telling the story of the capture and testing of one of the main protagonist and the emergence of 'forgery' Deadmen! This volume does pick up a fair bit as a number of groups within the prison realise ally ship is a must! Still hard work trying to finish this, with six more volumes to read! A 4 out of 12, Two Star read.

I think next volume will be one of the best volumes for this series, i like the unique Niben that showed up near the end of this one.
I also love how everyone came to help Ganta!
It will be Epic but it will have to wait, because i am finishing up Bitch Planet.

The following isn't a review as much as it is ranting. Just so you know going in. :D
---
Ugh. So this volume tries to convince us that our lead's idiocy in the last volume was a calculated maneuver to protect his friend.

Nonsense.

Ganta has shown zero propensity for quick thinking in this entire series. Not once has he reacted to anything in a way that showed the slightest bit of foresight. He has only shown two things. Either he completely freezes or he reacts emotionally in the moment. That's it. But now we are supposed to believe that he didn't do either of those things when Shiro spoke to him? That this one time he took in this new information, assessed the situation, understood it's consequences on his current plan of action as it pertains to Shiro, and came up with a means to negating those consequences? All in about a second?

Hells no. And to claim he suddenly did is just bad writing. Especially considering his "There's something wrong with her!" comment later. He doesn't even show an awareness of the danger in his plan until this moment, so why would he take steps to protect anyone else?

And... let's not forget that his actions in vol 6 still could have killed all of the people helping him. Everyone suddenly is just ignoring that.

The setting is super interesting. The characters except our lead are mostly awesome. The plotting is interesting when it isn't being stupid or evil for the sake of itself. But the moments of "I need our lead to do something idiotic" and "I need this person to be so evil it goes against their own plan" in order to setup the scene the writer wants are way too common.

"Ganta is surrounded with bunch of idiots"~direct quote from Shiro. Shiro is such a sweetheart!
My problem is that, I don't like completely evil characters, that are boring.. like that Tamaki guy.
Still, as much as the "power of friendship" thing is a cliche, I love seeing friends teaming up!
The star of this volume is Makina. That woman!

I expected them to show up but didn't think it'd be that early, I thought they'd save him half-dead or in a pinch if you got me.

One person after another coming to Ganta's rescue was too awesome of a moment for me to try to word it more than that. Seeing everyone go out of their way to save the one person who wasn't afraid to see the good in others was such a joy to watch.

Alright this one is much better then the last lol. Shiro is the literal best, she’s so sweet and the way she’s actually able to see directly through Gantas mentally unstable bullshit is actually amazing. It was pretty wholesome to watch Shiro come to realize on her own that Ganta was just struggling to actually be able to communicate how he actually felt and she saw right through it and still went to go and help him. She even rallied everyone else who already turned on him to go and save him too. It’s crazy to think that Ganta still hasn’t connected the dots about Shiro being the wretched egg but also extremely wild to find out his mom actually played a massive role in the creation of the wretched egg and Shiro in the first place. The plot really did begin to pick up with this one as chief warden makima did decide to go against Tamaki finally and begin to put an end to carnival corpse and the entire deadman wonderland facility.

New details about DmW, about Ganta, the Tinben and Scar Chain. Good storytelling. Also, we see both Azami and...Sito.

Chapter 7 represents an interesting turning point in the story as Warden Makina decides to go full on after Promoter 'fox' Tamaki. Presenting an interesting reverse in fortune from volume 6, Ganta is going to slowly regain the friends that he lost after his frightful Ganta Gun blast.

Story: A destitute Ganta searches for Azami and is captured by Promoter Tamaki in the process. Tamaki makes a Faustian offer - undergo Ninben experimentation in order to get enough power to destroy the Red Man. Meanwhile, Shiro has to believe in Ganta and reminds the former Deadmen exactly what Ganta has done for them. When they refuse to help, she takes Azami and they go after Ganta. Meanwhile, Warden Makina calls upon old friends from the military to begin a siege that takes the prison away from Promoter Tamaki's influence. The stage is set for a battle of epic proportions, Makina's prison officers and comrades against Tamaki's Ninben..

We've had a lot of different abilities explored so far, first by the deadmen and then by the ninben. It is going to be interesting to see what talents Makina's crew is going to bring to the table. Already, at the end of this volume, we get to meet a new breed of even crazier ninben.

As expected, Shiro will misunderstand Ganta's motivations and assume he's just being her friend. We learn more about the Wretched Egg from Tamaki - including the startling developments that Ganta is likely closely related to the person/thing he hates most - The Red Man. Home may be closer to the Wonderland prison than he thinks.

Pretty much every character in the book is insane except for Ganta. The "We're All mad here" statement from the Cheshire cat Alice in Wonderland really does sum up the Wonderland Prison of Deadman Wonderland.

Is it wrong to love a series this much? I hope not because I am absolutely hopelessly in love.
This book really makes the people in the story take a look at their past and motivations, and with that see where it's bringing them in life. In the last one when the ninben taunted our favourite Deadmen with their worst memories, they all snapped and went to kill those that dated do so. The thing is, everything said to them to get them to fight was true. After all, the truth hurts.
Ganta has been they only one to look away from this past hurt and try to make changes in the present. Yet all that seems to be doing is losing him friends. In fact he sets out to drive everyone away to keep them safe. Is that selfless or selfish? After all, isn't it stupid to refuse all help?
Azami is under the influence of the Ninben masks and we finally get to see her past and crimes. She wants to be alone, figure things out without help. So how can Ganta help someone that doesn't want to be helped?
This is a very emotional chapter. Looking into everyone's influences and seeing how new people, new relationships can change a hard past, it's really something.

Oh my, oh my, there were SO many new characters introduced in this volume, I can't even remember their names yet. There are three new fighters at Makina's side, which are definitely interesting. And three new complete Forgeries, who are supposed to surpass the original deadmen, wohoo boy. And not to forget Madoka... the guy is so cute, but I somehow feel like he is going to die, buuh ;__;

Anyway, the encounter at the end of the volume, where the complete Forgeries stand against the original deadmen like Senji promises some nice and interesting, hopefully AWESOME fights in the next volume, so I can't wait to read it x3

Also, Makina is awesome. Period.

This is one of those series that is either hate or love. It should be obvious where I am haha. This is the turning point for this series, I think. Ganta is growing up and Shiro is realizing more about him and herself. My favarite characters are Ganta Shiro Azami Makina and Hummingbird. Makina's friends well they are crazy as her. I like how she has two sides to her personality

So after a bit of a break – a couple of these in a row is more than enough candy popcorn for anyone – I’m back into the world of imprisoned, superpowered teens, and the creepy overlords that love [to experiment on] them.

As expected, it’s more of the same. By which I mean INCREDIBLE VIOLENCE and some creepy fan service for boob-focused shut-ins.

Same same then, eh?

The story continues from where the sixth volume left off. We’ve discovered the super-secret Ninben, super-monsters created for nefarious purposes. And Ganta – still the same sad sack of get-in-the-robot-Shinji indecision – is still trying to figure out a) how he fits into the world; b) who he should kill; c) if he deserves it and d) whether he actually likes Shiro.

So far so similar. But there’s movement afoot! Through the unlikeliest proposal, we’re told why the ninben exist. And alliances are forged in order to improve one’s chance of revenge. Of course, the reader is aware of just who it is that Ganta wants to off… I imagine that’ll be a little more difficult when he learns their identity.

Elsewhere, though, we’re treated to an element of self-consumption. Makina, the head of the prison’s guards, has finally had enough and reunites with some old comrades – and the rest of the prison’s guards – to try to defeat the ruling class. Admittedly, she seems to be doing this in ever-skimpier outfits, but it’s good to have a sense that the prison’s organising structures have cottoned on to how dysfunctional and wrong the environment is, and thus try to consume it from within.

Whether this is destined to collapse is uncertain, but I was excited to have a bit more forward momentum, coupled with an examination of exactly what the hell it was that was done to Azami.

(Short answer? Bad shit.)

As ever, friendship and doing what one must is key to the narrative moving forward. One-time foes come together with out heroes to to what they must to root our the evil of Deadman Wonderland’s big boss (and big bad). Will their plans amount to anything?

(There’s a number of volumes to go, so I’d assume yes, but not yet. We’ll see.)

SPOILERS AHEAD! This was a solid volume! Glad to see that Makina is doing her best to destroy Tamaki and shut down Deadman Wonderland once and for all. It's inhumane and gross to say the least. Azami is a pretty great character and now that we know what the purpose of the ninben masks is, we can empathise with the ninben too and know fully that Tamaki is the villain here. Ganta seems to be learning how to take responsibility and is very loyal to his friends especially since the reason he was sent to dw to begin with was because he was accused of killing all his classmates. It's very sweet to see that Ganta is to Azami what Shiro is to Ganta btw I now have much more of a clear vision regarding what dw is about however I'm still uncertain as to what the wretched egg truly is and why it must be destroyed. Still awaiting some crazy twist btw but I have 6 more volumes to read in order to complete this series. Dw being an abbreviation for don't worry is extremely ironic btw The coloured images at the start of every volume are beautiful btw and I just felt the need to bring them up and show them to you.

A sort of hit & miss volume. Ganta alienates the other Deadmen by defending Azami that is under the control of an electronic drug in the shape of a mask. This part of the plot sort of confuses me. If the undertakers have such powerful weapons that can crush most Deadmen and masks that can be easily produced that can bend the minds to follow Tamaki's commands, why does he need to create Ninben and kill Deadmen en masse?

Tamaki has already been forced to integrate Deadmen with the normal prison population due to pressure from the government and Makina has become increasingly suspicious of his activity.

I liked some parts of this volume but I just don't understand why Tamaki wants to discard Deadmen when increased scrutiny can foil his plans. Where is the Japanese government? Why not just drug everyone and make all of the Deadmen his loyal pets and then attack the Wretched Egg together?

I dunno, its like the plot has a lot of great character development and artwork combined with endless plot holes. Tread the manga without the best expectations and just enjoy its entertainment merits.

The Azami rescue was nice as her isolationist “I'll be fine” struggle fits well with the message Kataoka seems to be going for and plays well off of Ganta's “Help save everyone” deal.
One think I'm a bit confused and iffy on in this volume is Shiro and Azami's questioning of Ganta. Ganta does make a lot of decisions on-the-fly or without informing others of his full intentions making people get the wrong idea and I understand how that could make someone question him. Especially for Shiro since he purposefully lies and shrugs her off to try and keep her away from danger but Azami is weird since she hears him say his goal is to stop his friends from killing or being killed ending the cynical cycle that the world of DW pushes on everything that Ganta as the MC fights against. And this somehow makes her question him? Like yeah the guy goes overboard and will do things that take your agency away from the situation for what he sees as shielding you from violence. But he is also doing his deal of trying to protect his friends. On the other hand I think it does sorta fit into the whole "fighting against cynicism with youthful idealism" that Deadman Wonderland is going for. Ganta constantly makes decisions for everyone or that impacts everyone in a way that pushes the message of fighting against adult cynicism of how the world sucks and beats you down. But other characters are older and have gotten that adult cynicism that would make them question his actions. And just in general it makes sense it's a bit hard ot trust him to not just go off and change plans massively to save one person.

Volume 7 covers chapters 27-31

Ganta almost fatally wounds all of his friends in the last Carnival Corpse match in an attempt to prevent the match from ending in one of their deaths. His powers have been growing stronger and he’s having trouble properly controlling them. His friends survived, but they’ve all branded him a traitor and turned against him after his mistake nearly got them all killed. In the meantime, Ganta learns the true purpose of the Wonderland and artificial Deadmen, to create a mutant human strong enough to defeat the Wretched Egg/Red Man, a monster unintentionally created by the sin of scientific human curiosity gone too far.

Ganta goes a long way to prove his innocence to his friends, come to terms with the purpose of the wonderland and make an alliance with Commander Makina, a double agent working for the wonderland while waging a secret war against the warden she works under. Lots of moving pieces in this volume.

Ganta’s turning into a much more likable protagonist and he’s starting to show a lot more guts. The friends having some time to separate and come back together better and stronger than ever is nice to see.
