Superpowered humans known as NEXT appeared in the world 45 years ago. Some of them fight crime in the city of Stern Bild while promoting their corporate sponsors on the hit show HERO TV. The people love their superheroes, even if they don’t completely understand them, and not all of the NEXT use their powers for good.
The NEXT supremacist Jake Martinez has declared that all NEXT should join him in ruling over humanity! After issuing his call to rebellion, he heads for Justice Tower intending to seize it and establish his rule. The heroes find themselves scrambling to confront him as other old enemies appear, and Barnaby, faced at last with the man who murdered his parents, can no longer hold himself back…
I guess I have to start disconnecting my reactions from my expectations, because this book is essentially all new material and should be judged as such. Ivan's showdown - and reconciliation - with Edward happens in a different context that still gives him a major hero moment and allows Edward to shine a bit more, too.
I didn't particularly like the diamond villain having so many pages dedicated to him, and I feel like it detracts a bit from Tiger & Bunny's epic teamwork to have Sky High and Fire Emblem partnering together to take him down for a second time, but it was nice to see more of Sky High's naive but endearing belief in rehabilitating criminals.
Kotetsu, Barnaby, and Rock Bison go undercover, removing their hero suits to slip into the Justice Building with the NEXT who are responding to Jake's promise of creating a society where NEXT are the ruling class. It's a very X-Men/Magneto sort of storyline, but it works well, creating an environment where those with superpowers must decide whether to use them for their benefit, or to save the humans - even those who fear and hate them.
I liked the humorous touches, with Rock Bison awkwardly caught between the bickering partners. The best part of this volume, though, was the return of the Hero Academy students who'd asked Kotetsu for advice about becoming heroes. Seeing them activate their powers, working as a team to fight for their beliefs, echoing Kotetsu's words about what it means to be a hero - was a surprise and a wonderful payoff.
I have no idea where the rest of the volumes are going from here, and I'm a bit concerned that some of my other favorite moments will be removed or changed. Still, I'm intrigued.
MORE IVAN AND KEITH, CASUAL BARNABY, AND A CONFRONTATION NOT SET UP TOURNAMENT STYLE?? I love this as much - maybe even more - than the anime!
The characters are my favorite thing about this series. Ivan (Origami Cyclone) has been high on my list of favorite characters so I’m really glad he got more time to shine. Keith (Sky High) is just so loveable and heroic and I’m so glad he got a chance to prove why he’s the King of Heroes!
Casual Barnaby has me SWEATING! I need more! And that ending - I have to know what happens next!
[Just as an aside, I saw the anime first but wanted to see how different the manga was. I’m here for all the similarities and differences! Makes it such a cool experience!]
This volume really knew what I wanted and delivered it.
A one-on-one fight between Edward and Origami Cyclone that actually offers satisfying resolution (as opposed to in the anime? Yes please!
Getting to see Sky High going on-on-one with a baddie up close instead of him just handling it off-screen? Yes Please! (and bonus points for us getting to see a major reason he wears a helmet while fighting crime)
A team-up between Sky High and Fire Emblem? Yes please.
Tiger, Bunny and Rock Bison going plainclothes? Didn't know I wanted it, but it turned out that yes I really did.
There were even some great incidents of previously mentioned characters who I never expected to see back showing up and being awesome. This was just a great volume, my new favorite so far. The only thing I wish is that we'd seen something more of Blue Rose and Dragon Kid. But man, here this series really starts to shine over the anime.
The story is developing in a different way than in the anime, but so far (now I'm on volume 9), I think it's as interesting as the anime storyline. Plus, the manga goes into background story of some of the characters and there are new character interactions (while everyone staying in character). I'm looking forward to reading more of the manga series!
This series is always fun to read. This volume was no exception. I enjoyed Fire Emblem and Sky High's bit together with the fire and wind against the bad guy. Barnaby's explosion at the end was not expected, but I'd like to see what happens about that in the next volume.
They're definitely taking the story in a different direction, I'll try to embrace it as they stretch this story out. They're definitely not finishing in the next volume so I'll have a long wait to finish it, but I don't have a burning need to keep reading either.
