With Obito finally defeated, all attention now turns to the man behind everything bad that has happened: Madara. Naruto and Sasuke will need to work together if they have any chance of stopping this fearsome foe. But what will happen when the Nine Tails fox demon is forcibly removed from Naruto?!
Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.
Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.
Even in terms of fictional logic, nothing makes sense anymore, bar Guy's Eight Gates that were actually foreshadowed a very long time ago. But based on how everything's developing, the pivotal question is: what for?
And that's not the kind of feeling you want your readers to have when your series is nearing its end.
Time for Naruto and Sasuke to go night-night. They're too powerful and we've got to have others show off their stubborn streaks.
Oh well, not a problem, at least now we get to see Guy put everything on the line and become the Red Beast against Madara the Second Sage of the Six Paths. (Or at least the beginning of it.)
As the fight nears its climax, so much stuff happens, first Madara gets the eyes and there is a big fight and he is able to extract the Bijuus including Narutos nine tails and he somehow attacks sasuke and he is down but then again he becomes sage of the six paths, and the only way to save Naruto is to transfer the remaining half of Kurama from his father to Naruto but that is interrupted by Zetsu and a whole lot of Shenanigans take place but finally Obito comes in and there is a great moment where he and Kakashi team upto attack Madara and that was awesome to see them finally. And so he teleports to the space time dimension to transfer the other half there meanwhile Sasuke is saved by Kabuto who seems to have finally realized himself, and thats a massive character development for him and Obito, two men lost in the path returning to the right one and saving what had started because of them but Madara is at full power and the only thing that can defeat him is Taijutsu and we have one of the greatest moments ever with Gai using the eighth gate aka the gate of death and then while backstory, its so heart wrenching and emotional and might even make you shed tears and its GAI VS MADARA and its epic! The fight is just becoming more and more awesome!!

Just in time for the series to reach it's big climax, Naruto and Sasuke get one-shot and everyone panics. Time to move to Gai so another supporting cast member can take the spotlight while everyone else stands around waiting for 'chakra' so they can fight again. For a series that's all about passing the torch, the "will of fire", on to the next generation... most of this arc has been about the past generations. The Gokage fighting. Kakashi. The past Hokage. Now Might Gai. Sure, the idea is that the past are giving their lives to let the future generations live... but we've had over 600 chapters of watching these characters grow and now that we're in the home stretch they stop mattering?
Suddenly the series is all about how much stronger the past generations are and maybe one day the future generations will live in peace, but they're not matching up to the past because the past is so strong. We've had numerous prior volumes where it looks like everyone was working together and all of Naruto's peers from Konoha were all taking control but nope, here we are, back to Kakashi and Gai and Obito doing all the work.
Madara successfully captured all the Tailed Beasts and became the next Sage of the Six Paths. With Kurama extracted, Naruto is on the brink of death. Meanwhile, Madara dealt a deadly blow to Sasuke who's also barely holding on to dear life. Thank god, Obito and Kabuto turned to the good side and now saving Naruto and Sasuke while Madara is going toe to toe against Guy.

With Sasuke and Naruto side-lined, as mangaka Masashi Kishimoto desperately tries to make us believe the impossible, the focus is now put on side characters and their efforts to stall time and find help. It is extremely frustrating to see some of the more anatomically-impossible stuff shoe-horned into the story and to see Guy get the spotlight when it should've been Rock Lee...
for like half of this volume i planned to basically complain about how this fight is never ending but then lee and gai showed up and apparently ridiculously earnest men in green jumpsuits are all it takes for me to have real feelings for this story again. who knew? 2.5 stars
Once upon a time, the spirit of an evil Nine Tailed Fox wreaked havoc on Konohagakure; the Village Hidden in the Leaves, killing hundreds of honorable ninja in the skirmish and leaving many children without homes or parents. The Fourth Hokage (leader of the village) unleashes a forbidden jutsu (magic spell/ninja ability) to seal the spirit of the evil fox into the body of a newborn baby named Naruto at the cost of his own life. He did this in the hopes that the boy could one day learn to master the power of the demonic spirit and use it to protect the village and become a great hero of the people.
Unknown to the citizens of the Leaf, the Nine Tailed Fox was being controlled by an even more powerful adversary, a legendary rogue ninja that plans to wage war against the entire world from the shadows. The identity of the mysterious ninja that attacked the Leaf Village using the Nine Tails died with the Fourth Hokage, and he used what remained of his life to gift Naruto with the power of one day being able to stop this evil ninja and a clan of outlawed S-rank criminals called the Akatsuki from committing mass genocide against the many hidden villages and clans of the world.
Because of the evil spirit sealed inside him, Naruto grew up hated by the other children of the village because they believe him and the Nine Tails to be one and the same. They believe he’s a ticking time bomb waiting to go off, waiting for the perfect moment to kill them all just like the Nine Tails killed their parents and families. Shunned, dehumanized and treated like dirt, Naruto vows to become the greatest hokage the world has ever seen so that he can receive the love and acknowledgement he never got as a child.
On top of the Nine Tails power and the will to never quit, Naruto also possesses the uncanny ability to turn everyone he meets into a potential comrade. He brings out the best in his peers and tries his hardest to make his enemies see the errors of their ways. He disobeys the rules and ignores cultural traditions to try and make changes to the world and break the eternal cycle of war and hatred through his own methods. His determination is infectious to friend and foe alike. He earns himself the respect he deserves by overcoming one impossible obstacle at a time.
Naruto encounters many fascinating and terrifying ninja over the course of his journey to become hokage. Among them are Sasuke Uchiha, Naruto’s best friend and rival who is driven by the vengeful lust to murder his elder brother after he wiped out their own clan in cold blood. Sasuke warms up to Naruto, but his hatred and trauma are dangerous forces that threaten to break his moral code as a ninja and destroy his reputation among his peers.
Kakashi Hatake is a notorious copycat ninja that survived one of the most brutal and devastating wars in history as well as the Nine Tails attack on the Leaf Village. He becomes Naruto and Sasuke’s mentor and teaches them a great number of valuable lessons about surviving in the dangerous world of rogue ninja, bloodthirsty assassins and clans ruled by corruption.
Jiraiya is a perverted yet wise sage who taught the Fourth Hokage everything he knew and he’s regarded as a god among shinobi that’s famous for his heroic actions in the second great ninja war. He takes an interest in Naruto and raises him as a father figure to carry on the legacy of the Fourth Hokage to prepare him for the many dangerous people that want to use his power for their own nefarious purposes.
The Akatsuki is one such group of wicked ninja. Among them are Sasuke’s brother Itachi who murdered his clan and possesses many dangerous techniques involving illusions, psychological torture and elemental manipulation. Sasori who controls poisonous puppets with magical threads, Orochimaru who mastered the forbidden arts of reanimation and quasi-immortality, Deidara who fights from afar using detonating clay and many other deadly foes.
The entire series chronicles Naruto and his fellow ninja comrades growing through countless trials and tragedies. There are hundreds of unique jutsus, clans, and techniques which lead to some very intense, creative and strategic battles between skilled ninja with diverse abilities that don’t always match up evenly. There are clan based abilities such as the Aburame clan’s ability to control insects, the Yamanaka clan’s ability to jump into other people’s minds and control their bodies and the Inuzuka clan’s ability to bond with wolves that learn to mimic their master’s battle skills. Then there’s ocular genetic abilities such as the sharingan which allows the user to create psychological illusions, copy their enemy’s abilities and manipulate elemental energy. The byakugan allows the user to read their enemies vital points and detect their spiritual energy from faraway. The rinnegan grants control over space and gravity and so on.
On top of having countless unique abilities, nearly every character has a tragic backstory that makes them sympathetic and relatable, even the nastiest of the villains have well-explored reasons for following the paths they do and becoming the way they are. One of my favorite aspects of the series is how well it explores the physical, emotional and psychological effects war can have on society and culture as well as the survivors and future generations that are forced to live in them. How it breeds racism and cultural disputes, how it inspires hatred in orphaned children and war veterans robbed of their homes toward foreign nations, as well as how this eventually leads to further death, war, poverty and destruction. Learning to forgive the ones you hate to prevent further conflict and damaging the world for future generations even further is a major theme throughout the story.
Being a massive 700 chapter series, it’s not too surprising that there’s some plot holes and consistency issues. A rule might be stated regarding the requirements and usage of a certain jutsu or ability only for that rule to be repeatedly broken 400 chapters later. Sometimes the characters and rules contradict themselves, sometimes the chronology of certain events and historical facts don’t match up perfectly, the lore and general backstory go through several retcons that change the philosophy and power scaling of the characters and the scope of world-building; the final arc especially drags on and breaks a lot of the logic and rules that the story spent the whole series setting up, etc...
Naruto’s far from perfect, but I remember it very fondly for being one of the first series that introduced me to things like manga and Japanese entertainment in general. It was one of those childhood classics like Dragon Ball, Inuyasha, Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin. The series grew up with me and I can’t help but feel grateful to it for introducing me to hundreds of other franchises that I’m still a huge fan of to this day and I continue to find many new ones on the regular. Naruto's journey from a clownish, disrespected outcast into a talented, well-loved and admired hero is a memorable one.
Che copertina spoilerosa!!! Comunque Kishimoto migliora più ci avviciniamo al finale.... E ci sta facendo soffrire per tutte le cattiverie che gli abbiamo rivolto s meta serie
I have loved Gai since he first appeared doing that weird eye pose on the talking tortoise. To see him at the climax of his youth, I can't take it. He looks so damn perfect when he unleashes the red steam, his life's blood, to protect his most precious students and their future. His hair and eyebrows aflame with his power. A King from day 1. He deserved a cover. The fact that everyone else looks so sad when he's getting ready to make his ultimate move makes it all the sadder. This is the epitome of Gai's career, his life, his blessed youth and it's a sad moment despite the hype of it all. The story of his father whilst brief was very insightful. Gai is so devoted to his father's teachings because he had wavered from them in his own youth. He lost belief in his father and was embarrassed by him. But his father never gave up on himself and with Dai's death, he cemented in young Gai's head the true meaning of life and the path to eternal youth.
Why in the volume about Naruto's (and Sasuke's from one sword stab apparently) near death is there so much comedic nonsensensory? The white Zetsu clowning the shinobi forces, the white Zetsu insulting Madara, Team Gai's escapades on the way to the battlefield, Tobirama appearing to be spitting at Madara etc. "Black Zetsu's nickname is wicked tongue and we White Zetsu call ourselves wagging tongues."
The volume starts with the bijuu working together which was quite emotional when I think about how these are siblings who have been separated for probably centuries and they are fighting for their freedom which has long been denied to them. Unfortunately, now that Madara is back in his living body with one plundered rinnegan, it's not easy. The story of the monk which helps Shukaku decide to assist Gaara was very sweet. The tatoo transition, maybe there was a different path for those two. Sadly, all goes south as Madara, enhanced by Hashirama chakra and a real rinnegan in a living body, "collars" all of them, including Nine and Eight tails. He's so nasty to them.
Our beloved hero is near death! But Kurama imparts a plan to Gaara before he leaves to have the other half of him sealed into Naruto to keep him alive. Now, I have retrospectively always thought "why didn't Minato reseal Kurama inside Kushina?" I see in this volume that everyone, even Zetsu, believes that taking out a bijuu kills a jinchuuriki. So, I'm willing to accept that perhaps this loophole wasn't known. It's also only possible on Uzumaki's who have vast life forces. It is better to accept this than perhaps the real truth of Kishimoto's forgetful writing.
How can people still be perpetuating the false narrative that Sakura is useless when she is out here pumping the hero's heart by her own hand? She has done more than enough to beat this moniker she did rightfully deserve when she was younger. She's strong now, only some fans seem to deny this. The truly useless lot are the Gokage who are struggling with an essentially suped-up Yamato, even if they have lost chakra he's still not Madara level is he? And Hinata. If anyone's calling Sakura useless they need to extend that to her fairly. What was she running to do? She literally fell over for no reason. She's never been a character who was meant to grow. In each of her scenes she has played a role and played it well, usually to deliver emotional impact. When she's just standing there and not playing an active role, you can see she's got no other value. It's sad, but that's as far as Kishimoto's writing for females can go.
Madara gives his whole spiel about human conflict and peace, but he gives us a glimpse of what leads to future peace. The true nature of chakra and ninshu as a force to join people which allows them to read each other's hearts. He chose Kaguya's path, the heroes must choose the other (and I already know they do, having read the post-series works).
Madara's also still in his cult leader sh*t telling Obito he's Madara, Madara is a state of mind, Madara is the road to eternity and whatnot. But Obito's been on a journey, he knows himself now, he can no longer be manipulated by the likes of Madara. Obito takes what in his mind is probably his final stand, to fight by his rival and master to save the boy he's also put his hopes in. Kabuto has had a similar journey and is now back to save Sasuke but thankfully Suigetsu at least points out that he's still the reason this war's so bad in the first place. The way Madara kicks away Minato and the rasengan into Obito and Kakshi was actually quite cool.
The volume has multiple flashbacks: Minato and Kushina's worries about their child and vows to protect him because they are his father and mother respectively, Madara's drama, Team Minato's past and that little fight between Kakshi and Obito which gets interrupted by a little Gai. Foreshadowing the entrance, always on time, of our great bushy-browed hero.
Madara has obtained the unstoppable power of being an almost complete Ten-tails jinchuuriki, but is he really that special if the Blue Beast of Konoha doesn't even recognise him? He can't possibly be.
This was quite the interesting volume. Madara is up against the Tailed Beasts and we get to see some very interesting jutsu from Gaara, but it proves ineffective against Madara even before he becomes the Ten Tails Jinchuriki. Oops, spoiler alert. Madara becomes the Ten Tails Jinchuriki, but unlike Obito, he's able to strip both Eight and Nine tails away from Naruto and Killer Bee, so he's essentially the Sage of Sixth Paths now. I really enjoyed seeing the Biju work together and I hope that we can see it again in the future, if my assumptions are correct. Madara gets one of his eyes back and summons the Gedo Statue. The panel sequence of Madara laughing maniacally and then suddenly going back to his usual stoicism was chilling, but I don't think he ever gets to be as menacing as Obito was in his fight when he became the Ten Tails Jinchuriki. We got to see a bit of Shukaku's past and it really makes me hope that when all the Biju come back, Gaara will become Shukaku's Jinchuriki again. And I think the most shocking part of this volume was Naruto losing Kurama. I never thought this would happen. Naruto is basically out of commission for the rest of the volume while Sakura and Gaara desperately race to find Minato. Though, I am left wondering what happened to Killer Bee. Both Hashirama and Tobirama are essentially done for and Hashirama give Sasuke the last of his senjutsu chakra and sends him off to kill Madara, but Madara gets the jump on Sasuke and puts him in the same state that Naruto is in. Orochimaru is about to join the battle, when Karin senses Sasuke's chakra fading and senses a nasty chakra near him, and, spoiler alert, it's Kabuto! I'm so happy that he's finally come back, though, I wish we got to see him resolve his feelings and see how he broke out of the Izanami. Don't worry, Kabuto is healing Sasuke. He'll be fine. But, Naruto isn't doing too well. Sakura does something that is so kick ass, I really wasn't expecting something like that from her. She uses the last bit of chakra she has to cut a hole in his torso, so she can manually pump his heart with her bare hand. During all this chaos, Madara goes into full Sixth Paths mode and has Black Zetsu sucks up the part of Nine Tails' chakra that was stored inside Minato before he can implant it in Naruto. All while Sakura is still manually pumping his heart. Before Madara can get his filthy little hands on the rest of Nine Tails, Obito regains control of his body and starts taking out the Biju's chakra. I really think this closes up Obito's story very well. He got to confront Madara and actually prove that he changed. We even got to see Obito and Kakashi team up after returning Nine Tails' chakra to Naruto. Master Guy joins the fight and we see a little of his backstory. I don't like when Kishimoto makes the cover art something related to something introduced at the very end and clearly better suited for the next volume. I was expecting most of this volume to be about Guy, not just the last chapter. But, putting Naruto and Sasuke's corpses on the cover kind of ruins the surprise.

The war continues. I realize a lot of stuff is technically happening, but it doesn't feel like much is happening. Certain characters that did really bad things for most of the series seem to be going towards a path of redemption. And people are injured and exhausted. It seems like everything is going terribly, and then there are flashes of hope that are just enough to keep people going.
I did like the little parallel they did between Naruto and Sasuke. And Gaara kind of had a moment with Shukaku. Honestly, the more flashbacks we witness the more I can't help but feel that killing all the adults and restarting with the children (who hopefully won't suck as much as their parents) really is the way to go. I doubt the series will end that way, though, so I guess I'll see what's next in Volume 70.
