Lieutenant and Navy SEAL Derek Vaughn and FBI Agent Elizabeth LeBlanc worked together almost a year ago, came close to a romance but went their separate ways as she wasn’t interested in a non committed relationship and he went on another long term mission. Now they’ve been thrown together again following Derek’s latest op where they discovered intelligence about a major terrorist threat targeting the city of Houston. She’s been assigned to the task force and he’s on the periphery of the FBI-led investigation.

I was glad to revisit these two as she’s so buttoned up and insecure and Derek couldn’t be further from that description. He brings the best out of her and she grounds him. However, the investigation was the real focus of the story and it was developed so perfectly with threats, twists and turns at every juncture. It was gnarly because of the anonymity of the players and figuring out the who, what, where and when was truly difficult...the why was pretty clear. I loved trying to follow the case and figure out what was coming next. This was a truly exciting story with a HUGE climax that had my heart racing.

The Tracers figured prominently also and, again, I learned something about forensics I didn’t previously know. This series is surpassing my expectations and this story was excellent.

In book 8 we have an FBI agent Elizabeth LeBlanc and navy seal Derek Vaughn working together to figure out the next terrorist plot against US soil.

Beyond Limits is jammed packed with fast action as these two search out leads to not only find out who are the players behind a suspected threat, but what that actual threat is.

I'm finding this series to be a good thrill read. It is heavier on the suspense than the romance and I usually prefer more romance. That speaks to how good the suspense has been in this series.

This series have some recurring side characters and some of them become main characters. Despite that, I believe you can read each book as a standalone if you aren't interested in reading in order.

Audiobook borrowed on the Audible Romance Package. The narrator is very good. I don't particularly like her male voice but that's a personal preference and I got used to it very quickly.

“Why are you gun-shy with me?”

Only a couple of books in and already this series is one of my favorites. Laura Griffin’s writing is fast-paced, riddled with explosive chemistry and always seems to have that unputdownable quality I crave.

This one was a little heavier on the suspense side, but there was still a crazy intense connection between Elizabeth and Derek. A part of me wants to jump right into Scorched (book 6) so bad, just to see them meet for the first time! I started off with book 10 in the series and I’ve been working my way backwards. Yeah, I don't know how that happened. I just might have to skip 7 for the time being though, because the curiosity is killing me!

Elizabeth and Derek met a year prior to this story, during an investigation, and there was some feelings there. I’m not sure exactly what happened between them, but I’ll find out in Scorched! It isn’t long after Derek returns from a mission in Afghanistan, he’s a badass Navy SEAL, that he comes face-to-face with Elizabeth. He ends up helping her, sort of behind-the-scenes, with an investigation to thwart a sleeper cell of terrorist in the Houston area. It’s action-packed, unrelenting and played out in my mind like a movie.

“I ever tell you I love it when you get bossy?”

Their feelings for one another sort of become the elephant in the room. There is no ignoring them, no matter how much Elizabeth wants to. Her biggest fear? Giving in and ending up a forgettable woman - someone he spends the night with before heading off on his next assignment. Little does she know, he thought about her the entire time he was gone. It's so cute when the truth finally comes out.

I really loved these two together. She was more stoic and cautious, maybe it’s the FBI agent in her, and he was more of a risk taker. They had that spark that any great couple needs to keep things interesting. And can you blame her for falling for Derek - who doesn’t love a strong, confident, alpha-male? To top it all off, it wrapped with an incredibly sweet ending.

Notes to self:

2.5 stars rounded down...

Plot: Even though terrorist plots aren't my favorite story line, I thought this one was strong and well laid out.

Heroine: Strong, smart and independent thinking heroine with some issues but they didn't overshadow who she was. I really liked Elizabeth's character.

Hero: Way too good to be true and his over the top strengths overshadow the heroine, the plot and the romantic subplot. I know he's a Seal and I totally get the appeal and awesomeness of Seals, but in this book he was just too over the top. He was way too egotistical about his abilities being better than everyone else's abilities. And although he does care for the h, he was way too manipulative of situations all the way through the book including behavior that put her career at risk. There were numerous points in the book where I was so frustrated with his character I was cheering for a relationship twist where she tossed him aside and found someone else. I really didn't see a love match between the H and h. I could see the physical lust on her part; but I wanted to toss the guy out on his ***. For me, it was his character that brought this book down from a 4 star to a 3 star.

Additional Comments:
-Elizabeth and Derek met in a prior novel, Scorched but you didn't really need to read it to enjoy this book.

-Although part of the Tracer series, the Delphi Center and its staff did not play as prominent a role as in prior books in the series.

2018 Update:
I'm re-reading this series and I'm actually having a hard time reading this book the second time around. Most of this series I've had no problem with re-reads and have enjoyed the books the second time around. This time I've stopped reading at page 86. I just can't stand Derek. He's like an egotistical stalker who wants intel and sex from Elizabeth. And the fact that Elizabeth gives in just makes me disappointed in her character.

It’s one of my favorite times of the year! No, not Christmas…… Laura Griffin has a new Tracers book out!! A book highlight of my year for sure. Beyond Limits is book number eight in the series, and yet again she has outdone herself.

The romance/suspense balance is so on point. The dynamic between FBI agent Elizabeth LeBlanc and Navy Seal Derek Vaughn is smart, witty, and tension-building. With a case that mimics real world events, I was drawn in with my heart racing right along with these characters; never a lull in the story or a break in the tensions mounting. I was captivated from page one.

Beyond Limits is a five star read folks.

Elizabeth LeBlanc is an FBI agent feeling a little off her game, after her last assignment left her injured. Back on the job, she is called in to work on a special assignment in Texas. Imagine her surprise when an intelligence meeting has her sitting across from Derek Vaughn. Derek is a drop dead gorgeous Navy Seal, dedicated to cause and country. He and his team uncovered Intel overseas about a threat on American soil. That Intel cost the life of one of his teammates and he is determined to get answers.

Elizabeth has feelings for Derek, as these two have a history but she is practical and taking two steps back because he is so wrong for her. Ooo I loved the chemistry, tension, banter and swoons between these two. Elizabeth has missed Derek and he her, but they lead such different lives and Elizabeth is thinking it will be too painful if she lets him in. Not me dear Lizzy because Derek has me swooning. I love a take-charge alpha.  Derek's ability to gather Intel and the way he looks at Elizabeth; well let us just say I am a fan.

The case is intense as they uncovers threats in Texas. Elizabeth tries to bring Derek in through the proper channels, and despite the no go, they end up crossing paths as they both investigate. Griffin writes a well-paced, realistic suspense and I loved watching all of the players’ piece together clues to thwart the terrorist plans. At times, it was nail biting and I lost myself within the story.

I love that Derek and Elizabeth shared a past as it allowed me to quickly connect and root for a happily ever after. Griffin combines snark, tender moments and delicious page melting heat as the romance progresses. While this is part of the series, I loved that I was able to dive in and received a complete romance along with the case. An epilogue had me smiling and I fully intend to continue the series.

Beyond Limits by Laura Griffin is beyond thrilling and palpable. This is the 8th book in the Tracer series and Ms. Griffin does not disappoint her readers since this book is action-packed, suspenseful, and a roller-coaster ride that full of heart-pounding adventures. A book that can’t be put down and must be read in one sitting. Romance and suspense are intertwined beautifully in this thrilling book that focuses on one hot alpha NAVY SEAL hero and an FBI agent as they work on a case to stop a terrorist plot.

When you put Navy Seals, FBI agents, other government agencies with three letters, and a terrorist cell you have all the ingredients of an action packed Laura Griffin new Tracers novel. She immediately introduces key characters and their back stories. “Beyond Limits,” story line illustrates complications of the FBI working with or even recognizing the efforts of the Navy Seal team.

The pace of the action in the beginning of story never slows and continues to increase as readers can feel the buildup of momentum in the story. Griffin continues the development of the support characters providing additional back story information as needed. She introduces the two key protagonists, Navy Seal Derek Vaughn and FBI agent Elisabeth LeBlanc. Each character has a history with each other and Griffin does a great job of keeping the reader guessing what is going on between them.

The antagonists are unknown but as a group they always seem to be one step ahead of LeBlanc and Vaughn as they team up to pursue leads that LeBlanc’s boss doesn’t seem to have an interest. “Beyond Limits” is well researched and readers learn the ins and outs of an FBI investigation of a terrorist cell. As the story progresses readers are brought into the investigation through the eyes of LeBlanc. LeBlanc pursues an interview with Haley Gardner, the hostage Vaughn rescued, and readers participate in the interview as if they are sitting on LeBlanc and Vaughn’s shoulders.

The pace of the story never slows down and is always changing as LeBlanc and Vaughn follow leads in the investigation. The terrorists are ruthless, have no conscience and try and take out LeBlanc and Vaughn as they strengthen their commitment to stop the plot. Of course the main frustration as the FBI hasn’t found out what the terrorist group is targeting.

Griffin keeps her readers’ interest in romance as she builds a fire under both LeBlanc and Vaughn. LeBlanc a career in law enforcement and Vaughn a career Navy Seal always going somewhere on a mission knowing he might not come back. They both are sure neither a relationship is possible, since they are from two different worlds

As usual all of the books in the Griffin’s Tracer series our protagonists use the Delphi Center’s state of the art technology to find some answers that point Vaughn and Leblanc towards answers that bring them closer to discovering the target. Using modern technology to help find answers the Delphi Center and Dr. Voss shed new light on their case .

This is a gripping story of intrigue and suspense delivering a thrill a minute and readers will find themselves holding their breath more than once. Readers will find themselves going down one road thinking they knew what was going to happen next and they find themselves wondering what they missed. This suspense thriller is a heart stopper both in the intense action and the intense connection in the world of romance. This is great read and has my recommendation. I give the story 5 stars without reservation.

This is one of my beach reads. I enjoy Laura Griffins' romantic suspense novels and this one is just as good as the others. FBI agent and Navy SEAL - what more do you need? The only thing is that this is called a Tracers novel, but the Delphi Center and the experts there play a small part in this story so if you really liked that aspect, you won't see those characters as much. The ending is also a bit too...neat, but hey, I read these books for pure entertainment so give me more!

Beyond Limits by Laura Griffin is a 2015 Gallery Books publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Laura Griffin rules the military style romantic suspense genre. This eighth installment in the Tracers series does not disappoint.

Elizabeth is an FBI agent still struggling with the aftermath of her last case and the lingering feelings she has for Navy SEAL Derek Vaughn.
When a terrorist cell is discovered that has big plans for Texas, Elizabeth and Derek find themselves face to face once again and the chemistry between them is just as strong as ever.
For Derek the FBI is not moving fast enough. Lives are stake as the possibility arises that chemical warfare is the terrorist weapon of choice. Instead of wading through bureaucracy, red tapes and waffling, which is the FBI in a nutshell, he wants to gain Intel from Elizabeth and use it go after the terrorist himself.

From start to finish the action is non-stop and suspense gets more intense with each chapter. This story touches on several themes. The work of the SEALS, and vast difference in methods they employee as opposed to government agencies. If this scenario was a real live case, I think I would have to put my money on the SEALS. The FBI might let us all die.
The effects of war, the honor among SEALS, the impact it has on the personal lives of the men is also an undercurrent.

Derek is my kind of guy. He pulls no punches, gets the job done and means business. We really need more guys like this one! Oh and he's a super hot SEAL and that makes him super sexy too. Elizabeth was a bit timid, sort of damaged after all she had been through before she took on this case. She doesn't fight Derek too hard when he wants information from her even though she knows he is using her for the Intel. Despite her issues, she is no shrinking violet when comes to doing her job and is as serious as Derek about catching the terrorists before the worst happens.

The romance in this one is not quite as heated as some previous books in the series, but the story line here is just really, really intense and serious and there is a lot going on, so I thought it was more realistic. That is not to say the romance is not hot, just fewer love scenes. This couple has a few challenges to face but if they are as determined to work on their relationship as they do in other areas of their lives , then I think they are going to be just fine.

Overall I have to say I enjoyed this book as much as all the others in the series. If you are fan of this author then snap up your copy now, you won't regret it. If you new to this author, never fear, you can read this one as a stand alone. Once you do, you will want to read all Laura Griffin novels! 4.5 stars .

I loved this book - one to go on my favorites list.

Great balance of hot romance with complicated, real characters and a really exciting, plot driven thrill ride.

I really, really like Laura Griffin's books, so much so that I have a NetGalley account beacuse I CAN'T WAIT to read the next one. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, so thanks, NetGalley.

Reasons to read Laura Griffin's Romantic Suspense:

1.) Great plot. No silly, over-the-top stalkers or jaded cops out to get revenge. No baby plots and no jealousy tropes. Stories that you literally could see happening today which keep you on the edge of your seat. This one, in particular, is a terrorist plot that you can literally imagine being reality.

2.) Hot romance. Not just a case of insta-love - but some worthy lust-to-love couplings that leave you smiling and happy, but are often relatable in their imperfection. (Probably the most relatable thing about them is that the people are flawed -- because, lets get real, I don't even know an FBI agent or Navy Seal - I once new a guy who went on to be Special Forces, and someone who aspired to be in the FBI. Maybe I hang out in the wrong circles).

3.) Super writing - good flow, good pacing.

My only complaint is that Laura Griffin needs to write faster so I don't have to wait another year more.

4.5 fantastic stars!

I devoured this book. Once I started I couldn't stop and finished it in one sitting. I'd never read anything by this author before and can't wait to read more from her! This book is book 8 in her Tracers series but with me starting out with this one, I followed along and wasn't confused with any of the story. So you don't have to start out at book 1. But I think I'll go back and start there and work my way up.

I have received this book as a member of the XOXperts, XOXO After Dark’s official street team, in exchange for an honest review.

Laura Griffin can write really good suspense. In previous books I’ve read, her bad guys are BAD. Her heroes and heroines are smart and the books are always action-packed. My one complaint has always been the lack of romance. There is always a HEA, but the road to romance is not always super sexy or detailed. I’ve actually skipped her last couple because reviews have said the romance is even less than normal. But this book has a Navy SEAL hero and a FBI heroine with a terrorist plot – that combination appealed to me.

Liz and Derek have a past as they met about a year prior (I’m guessing it may have been mentioned in a previous book). But as Derek’s career takes him overseas and Liz is busy being a special agent, they have lived separate lives. But when a terrorist plot is revealed, Derek and Liz have a common goal – stop the terrorists before they strike on US soil. Derek was on a mission rescuing an American hostage when he uncovers a map of Houston. Not sure what it means, he captures one of the guys where the map was found, and brings him in for questioning. The problem is, the captive was handed back to his country for a different crime he committed and allowed to escape. Now the FBI have been alerted to this threat, and Liz steps in to investigate. The leads start pouring in as they think the bad guys could be infiltrating through Mexico into Texas.

This book is heavy on the suspense. I think Laura Griffin writes such believable suspense, which is so important to me when reading this genre. I never feel the need to roll my eyes or snort when the characters go into action. Their thoughts and actions always seem smart and reasonable. Liz is a heroine who is a little more cold and stand-offish. She is very serious about her job and doesn’t have time for the sexy SEAL who keeps popping up on her job. She doesn’t want to be the token female agent placed on the job or the one chosen just because she has a friendly relationship with the SEALs. She wants to prove herself and works tireless. While she is a little colder, I liked her a lot.

Derek’s stake in this terrorist plot is personal. When one of his fellow SEALS die while rescuing the hostage, he wants these guys to go down. On leave, he is able to meet up with Liz and start poking around and using his own contacts. He is tall and muscular and wears cowboy boots. He is much warmer than Liz and much more eager to explore the chemistry between them. As I mentioned earlier, I’m always itching for more sexual tension in Griffin’s books. The romance falls a little flat for me but at the same time, I really appreciated the fact that they take the terrorist threat seriously and don’t ignore it while jumping under the covers.

Overall this is a nice suspense story. If you like terrorist plots, try this one.

Wow, this was my first book by Laura Griffin and it won't be my last. I'm not usually into terroristic thrillers, but this one had me entranced. I read it in one sitting. The action was fast paced and had me on the edge of my seat through most of the book. I say most because there were a few chapters I had to skip. I'm not into romance books. I like when the characters shut the bedroom door, I know what they are doing. I don't need details.

That being said, it did not take anything away from the story for me and for most of you it would probably add another story for you to enjoy.

I especially liked that many of the locales were in Houston, where I live. There are also scenes from Texas Hill Country and San Diego. I love when a book is set in a place I have been to. I don't know why but I just enjoy it a lot better.

Apparently this was the 8th in this series and that did not dampen my enjoyment whatsoever. There were a few instances where the story referred to past actions such as her scar, but it was explained and the story went on. I really liked the characters and want to read more about them in the future!! I definitely recommend this book!! I would really rate this 4 1/2 stars but this site doesn't provide that luxury.

Thank you Gallery, Threshhold, Pocket Books and Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest review.

4.5 stars!

Wow! How have I gone this long without reading anything by this author before?! I love when a book comes out of nowhere and knocks me off my feet! I really, really enjoyed Beyond Limits. Laura Griffin writes amazing romantic suspense! This is actually the 8th book in a series, but can definitely be read as a standalone. It's pretty rare that a series can still pack such a heavy punch with it's 8th book, but Beyond Limits did it and then some. Now I'm anxious to go back to the beginning, to see where it all began.

Beyond Limits was such a great balance of all my favorite key ingredients for the perfect romantic suspense read: real characters with real world problems, a fantastic, fast placed plot full of drama, and delicious sexual tension and steam. This book hit all the right spots for me. When the plot hit it's peak, I truly was sitting on the edge of my seat, anxious to see what would happen to these great characters.

This book was definitely a hit for me, and I'll be reading more from Laura Griffin very soon!

A Seal rescue mission in Afghanistan uncovers a possible terrorist attack planned on US soil and FBI agent Elizabeth (Liz) LeBlanc is recruited by the agency’s counterterrorist division to investigate. The first order of business is to interview some of the Seals involved in the rescue, one of whom she met on a previous case who still fuels her fantasies. But reality warns her not to get too close to a man with so many secrets even though it would be oh so tempting.
It’s been a rough go for US Navy Seal LT. Derek Vaughn who on their last mission managed to rescue the hostages but lost a Seal brother to a terrorist bullet. There was also some sensitive information recovered during the raid that’s managed to stir up all of the state side alphabet bureaus and is why the smoking hot FBI agent he met last year who’s been starring in some pretty racy dreams mostly naked is sitting across the interview table from him right now. If he could make those dreams a reality he’d be a happy man.
While working together to try and eliminate the terrorist threat, chase down leads and locating bad guys Liz and Derek also have to decide if this intense desire they have for each other is worth taking to the next level especially for two people with their relationship killing careers.

Griffin’s latest page-turning, nail-biting Tracers novel is fitting for our all too true but unfortunate current terrorist plagued world and the perfect blend of romance and suspense. It showcases her iconic attention to detail that gives readers a uniquely intimate perspective. Her no-nonsense dialogue tells this remarkable tale and is just right for her pragmatic characters and pressure-cooker scenes. Her stars, the ultimate patriot, Navy Seal hero and by the book, uptight FBI agent heroine are remarkable standouts. And how she nails their attitudes and sexual tension you can cut with a knife is amazing and a testament to her master storyteller status. She gives her beloved Delphi institute and some past stars an opportune cameo role that will let fans reconnect while adding to the present story. Her timely placed humor deflects some of the darkness and helps to lighten the otherwise tense scenes. If you haven’t tried one of Laura’s Tracers novels don’t delay there is no one better in this genre and although they are a connected series they all stand well on their own. Laura you've taken me into some tight places before but none can top this. Bring on the next case!

This is an action packed story filled with suspense, drama and romance. Lieutenant Derek Vaughn is a dedicated Navy Seal and when he and his team are on a mission they discover information that leads them to believe there is going to be a terrorist attack in the United States. Derek is on leave now and wants to help uncover the plot, but his hands are tied because this isn’t his jurisdiction.

Elizabeth LaBlanc is a hard working FBI agent. She is trying to prove a woman can be just as successful as a man in this male dominated field. Her job is her sole focus and she doesn’t have time for any distractions in her life. When it’s discovered that terrorists are plotting something in the United States, she is assigned to a special task force to investigate the plot.

Derek and Elizabeth met each other a year ago when she was working on a case. Derek surprises Elizabeth when he shows up and wants to help find the terrorists. Elizabeth isn’t sure what to do. She knows she will get into trouble if she gives Derek any information, but they can use all the help they can get on this case. Derek is continually showing up and asking questions and he is distracting Elizabeth. She is attracted to Derek and his sexy Texas drawl, even though she doesn’t want to be. Derek wants to explore the irresistible chemistry between them but Elizabeth keeps pulling back. She doesn’t trust him and is afraid to let guard down.

I love and devour everything Laura Griffin writes. Her stories are always filled with intrigue, suspense and romance, my favorite combination. In this story only bits and pieces of information are given out, so the reader slowly puts it all together. The only downside to this story for me was it contains more action than romance. Derek and Elizabeth have a sizzling chemistry when they are together and I would have enjoyed a little more romance. I admire Derek and Elizabeth they are both goal driven and constantly striving for excellence in everything they pursue. Derek’s a nice guy. He really likes Elizabeth and hasn’t been able to forget her since they met a year ago, but he loves being a Navy and he’s gone a lot. This is an action packed story as they race against time trying to chase down clues to stop the terrorists.

I've really enjoyed a number of books in this series, but the last couple have not worked for me at all. The focus has shifted away from the smarty pants scientists at the Delphi Center and into the FBI and Navy SEALs and various terrorist type activities. I have a lot of issues with these sorts of plots in thrillers and the undertones in them, and the Tracers books dealing with that subject are no different. Basically, unless there's a Ben Lawson book in the works, I'm done with this series, which makes me sad.

I do recommend the first few books in this series as well as the Glass Sisters duology, if you're looking for an exciting thriller featuring smart characters.

Not my favorite and I don't really believe in the relationship, but the angst of it all was very appealing. I'm sort of over the terrorism books, though, can we go back to murders?

ETA: Also, I don't think the hero ever tells the heroine that he loves her? Which, again, these aren't straight romances but I feel like that's a party foul considering they're uprooting their lives for each other at the end.

Well written, well researched, meticulously plotted...and a little dry and boring. The story simply failed to keep my full attention, which got lost in all the lengthy detail. Also, everything the plot threw at our intrepid couple just happened to be conveniently within Derek's particular SEAL skill set. I like the 'Tracers' series, but this one not so much.

Loved Beyond Limits - this is possibly my favorite of Laura Griffin's yet!! You can not put this book down - too much is happening too fast and if you put it down, you might miss out on the action. Great suspense mixed with a great love story.

This is the book that I have been waiting for! I loved meeting Derek in the sixth book of this series and was really anticipating the romance between him and Elizabeth. I was also kind of ready for another terrorist plot and this book delivered on both counts. While we meet both Derek and Elizabeth briefly in an earlier book, that would in no way impact this one if you are considering picking this one up out of order in the series. The author does a great job orientating readers and making sure they understand that Derek and Elizabeth have at least met before etc.

If you are a fan of thrillers then you will no doubt have Laura Griffin on your radar already but if you haven’t heard of her (like me prior to about 7 weeks ago) then you absolutely need to get this author on your radar! I have featured some of Griffin’s books in the past (The Texas Murder Files) but I hadn’t read any of her books up until about 7 weeks ago when I finally caved. Ever since then I have been knee deep in allllllllllll of her books. While I might love some more than others, overall all the books she has written are fantastic and diverting reads.

I think of all the books that I have read in this series, I think so far this is one of my favorite ones. It comes at a good point in the series as it gives readers something new to read about (counterterrorism) rather than grizzly and horrifying murders. The amount of research and attention to detail in each book is staggering. I feel like Griffin is a master at so many things—-writing sizzling romances, twisty mysteries, and knowing all about police and military procedures! She is truly a master at what she does.

This is the second book that features an active Navy SEAL as part of the mystery and romance. From the beginning Derek and Elizabeth have amazing chemistry. Derek is tenacious and isn’t willing to let the object of his affection go without a fight but not in a way that is pushy or anything. He is respectful and gives Elizabeth the space to be a professional woman in a mans world. I never felt like he restricted her in anyway. Sure he was frustrated by her sometimes and tried to protect her but at the same time he understood that she was an FBI agent and she was capable of operating in a man’s world and holding her own. It’s one of the things that I really enjoyed about his character—-how he related to Elizabeth. He treated her as an equal.

I also loved how much chemistry they had together. Derek was this kind of glib lounge individual but he was also serious and resourceful when needed but he was great at defusing hard situations with some humor which I absolutely loved and adored about his character. Not to mention the sex scenes were hot but not overly steamy and graphic. It was a perfect balance of sexy and romantic. Very well done, I would expect nothing less from Griffin as her sex scenes are always tasteful and believable.

I was fascinated by the counterterrorism parts too! For the last three years it’s been all COVID all the time, it almost makes me forget that there are other thing still happening in the world like terrorism. In a post 9/11 world, terrorism was at the forefront of news reporting and often the topic of most news shows etc but now it’s all COVID. So reading something that was about terrorism almost felt like a break! This one has so much fast paced action and so many plot twists that I couldn’t get enough of it. As I mentioned earlier, this is one of my favs in the series thus far! Do not miss this book or this series!

A captivating blend of mystery, romance and non-stop action.

Author Laura Griffin captivates with the latest installment in the Tracer series, a story of unrequited passion and second chances amidst a terrifying situation that unfolds on American soil. Laura Griffin’s writing is tight, as always, her spot-on jargon lending a special kind of credibility to the story that makes you feel as if you’re vividly in the thick of things. This particular novel was heavy on the suspense side, with a bit of romance as two people who met and collided briefly some time ago (Scorched), find themselves unexpectedly working together on a big case.

“People always said absence made the heart grow fonder, but she’d had a different experience. Derek’s absence had made her heart grow smarter, and she’d thoroughly convinced herself that staying away from him was a wise decision. Seeing him, though—even for a few minutes—had turned all of that logic on its head.”

When FBI agent Elizabeth LeBlanc gets pulled onto a case that could lead to a big break, she also comes face-to-face with a man she hasn’t been able to forget. Navy SEAL and all-around badass Derek Vaughn is back from Afghanistan, after a brutal rescue mission that’s led them all to believe a terror attack is planned in Texas.

Derek is smart, rough around the edges, and determined, and seeing Elizabeth (Liz) again, he is in no way ready to let her go again. Like Liz, Derek hasn’t been able to forget her, and having her in close proximity, he has to take his chance, even if it means pushing himself onto a case on which he doesn’t belong.

The case they are working on involves a potential terrorist plot in Houston, and they must work together to find the men behind it, as the search hits American soil, intensifying by the day. Bullets fly as the action escalates and time ticks by quickly. And with every moment they’re together, Liz struggles to control her desire for Derek, who is all too willing to take her to his bed.

“Derek Vaughn was smart and confident and impossibly attractive to women who liked their men a little rough around the edges. But he knew it, too. And she couldn’t stand the thought of becoming one of those forgettable women. It was high on her list of Reasons Not to Go There.”

They both approach the case differently, and from a suspense standpoint, I found it fascinating to see the mystery deepen and slowly unravel. I felt the pressure of time, the intensity and gravity of the case, and how every turn led to something just out of reach. I would have loved to see more romance, or more moments of connection, really, as I found the dynamics between Derek and Liz so intriguing. Liz is smart and seemed very business-like, while Derek was a bit of a wild card, all intuition, experience and corded muscle. For Liz, they were two people who could never work. Perhaps he wanted her for just one night, perhaps it was more, but given their situations, she couldn’t put her heart on the line for a guy who would never be there, always rushing the line between certain death.

“Form the moment he’d burst into her life last summer, she’d been mesmerized by him–his looks, his voice, the relentless way he pursued everything he wanted, including her. But when she took a step back and looked at it objectively, she knew nothing could ever work.”

Beyond Limit’s tight writing, plot-driven suspense and thrilling intensity, made it a book I really enjoyed. If you’re looking for a true suspense read with some sexy romance, this is a great novel to pick up.

**I received this book from NetGalley for in free in exchange for an honest review**

This was an awesome book!

Elizabeth LeBlanc's character portrays herself as this fiery, fiercely confident FBI agent but that persona comes crashing down as soon as Navy SEAL Derek Vaughn steps back into her life. Elizabeth and Derek have spent the past year away from each other but pining for each other. While Elizabeth kept herself busy trying to get over Derek, he spent his time trying to figure out how to get into her bed and into her heart. Elizabeth wants to keep it professional, Derek wants to take their relationship further.

The whole time they are pushing and pulling against each other emotionally, they are knee-deep in trying to find terrorists who have managed to sneak in the United States through the Mexican border and are planning an attack in Houston, Texas. Derek wants to keep Elizabeth safe and protect her from any danger but he also wants revenge on these terrorists who are also responsible for the death of one of his SEAL brothers so he inserts himself into the FBI investigation and uses his connections in order to help Elizabeth find the terrorists and stop the attack.

I really liked the dynamic between Elizabeth and Derek. You can tell that they both really care for each other but you can also sense the apprehension and the instinct they both have to protect themselves and each other. Elizabeth doesn't think she can handle the months away from Derek and not knowing where he is and what he's doing but Derek is sure he can't let her go. No matter how much Elizabeth tried to get Derek to back off and stay out of the investigation, he continues to find leads and step in at the last minute, not to rescue her but to help her.

I liked that Derek worked well with Elizabeth instead of trying to rescue her. Yes, there were times that Derek did manage to rescue her but he didn't ever try to throw his weight around and make her feel like she was less because she was a woman. No, he doesn't like the danger involved with her work but the more he works with her the more he sees how strong and capable she is of handling the dangers of her job.

The action and suspense in this book revolving around the terrorists and their plot was written very well. Their sneaky entrance into the US, their weapons, explosives, and their attack plot are all realistic and you can tell that Laura Griffin obviously did her homework.

I spent half the book yelling for her to quit being so stubborn and just give in to her feelings for him. I think that was my only complaint about the book. I felt like Elizabeth held out too long for Derek when she could have spent more time enjoying time with him. Laura Griffin wrote this book really well and I cannot wait to read more of her work!

My Review:
This was the first book I've read from Laura Griffin (I know, I know...I should lose my romantic suspense reader card, but I've seen the error of my ways, I promise) and I really like it. I see why her books always hit the bestseller lists. This book was really incredibly good.

The heroine, Elizabeth, is an FBI agent who had an assignment go wrong recently and is having a hard time getting back on task in the office. Her jerk of a boss certainly isn't helping things, so it's a huge relief when one of the higher up's reaches out to her to pull her into a special mission to break up a terrorist threat in Houston.

Derek is a SEAL and it was a raid done by his team that led to the discovery of this terrorist cell. He's from Houston and one of his SEAL teammates died recovering the information...so this is personal to him. And that's before he realizes that Elizabeth is on the FBI team. They have a history. It's a brief one, but that connection has stayed with both of them mentally over the last year, so it's a really strong one.

I loved how the suspense in this played out. Derek is a SEAL and because of that he plays by a different set of rules when it comes to ferreting out information. His entire focus is the end-goal...not how he gets there. Liz is an FBI agent working on American soil. She has to play by the rules...which Derek doesn't accept. I loved to watch them as a team. Derek is this rogue agent type who is constantly dragging Liz along for her badge. It kept me smiling, but especially when his techniques worked. While I'm not a fan of that in real life, it worked so incredibly well for this story.

Derek is constantly pushing Liz for more. She's not the type to normally give in, but he's persistent and so sure that he's always right...and he usually is. I loved watching him convince her to trust him. It was definitely a gradual thing that grew more and more throughout the book which translated into their relationship, too. The focus of the story is definitely the suspense, but for this romance loving girl, I didn't have a complaint about the romance either. It's all really well done and I would grab up another Laura Griffin read in a heartbeat. I'm pretty sure I have a couple of hers on my to-be-read shelf. I need to go dig them up.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

One word comes to mind when I think about BEYOND LIMITS...EXPLOSIVE! Explosive Action, Explosive Chemistry and an Explosive, on the edge of your seat story line. If you thought you had a favorite Tracers Novel...Well...Think Again!

BEYOND LIMITS was beyond my expectations...Laura Griffin's writing was spot on, with knowledge, and facts that keep you sucked into the story, literally dropping you right in the middle of the action, as if you are there watching the story unfold. Griffin's style of writing rival's some of the best in the Romance Suspense genre...maybe topping the list, in my opinion. I am marveled by her ability to make each Tracer Novel a new and exciting experience...always one step ahead of the reader...from lighting the flame to an explosive finish.

Derek and Elizabeth...I have been wanting to read their book ever since I read SCORCHED, which is Kelsey and Gage's full novel. Derek is Gage's SEAL Teammate and gets involved in the case where Gage is a murder suspect. Elizabeth is a newbie in the FBI and she is also working the case. Just the short amount of time we get to spend with them during SCORCHED is enough to see that these two would ignite quite a spark in and out of the bedroom. I have to say...LAURA DID NOT DISAPPOINT! OMG....Elizabeth's reaction to a shirtless Derek is priceless!

The romance was layered with heart-pounding action and sizzling chemistry that you will have a very hard time putting this one down. This is a MUST-READ of 2015!

If you haven't read the series yet, I encourage you to start at the beginning, only because each book has so much to offer to the series, but, if you want to just start with SCORCHED and move on to BEYOND LIMITS, that will work too!

Elizabeth LeBlanc and Derek Vaughn meet again under rather implausible circumstances when Derek finds evidence of a terrorist sleeper cell during an operation in Afghanistan that leads him straight back to Texas and back to Elizabeth. Having spent the better part of a year pining for each other, Elizabeth and Derek have a real chance at making things work between them, even though it seems the obstacles (both perceived and real) are too many to overcome without losses or heavy compromises.

As a reader, I've always been uncannily drawn to the chemistry that I find between peripheral characters and while reading Scorched, Elizabeth and Derek drew my attention with their tentative interactions and their chemistry. I'm thrilled that they've finally gotten their own story - even as far-fetched as the events seem at times - and and even more intrigued by the angsty scenes between the 2 other side characters of Luke and Hailey that Ms Griffin introduces in this book.

The Tracers series have been a hit and miss for me and in taking a step away from forensic anthropology, Beyond Limits is a solid read, as well as a refreshing change from the previous books - and one which I definitely hope subsequent books could build on.
