Midnight Rush Romance #1

Once upon a Boyband: Boy Band Series, Book 1

Rate this book
Once upon a time, she slept with his poster beside her bed. Now, he's all grown up, hiding behind a burly beard and lots of flannel... and she doesn't have a clue.

Eight years ago, Adam Driscoll walked away from his stage name—Deke—and the boyband that turned him into an international star before his eighteenth birthday.

And he never looked back.

It didn't even matter that everyone blamed him for the band's breakup. He might miss making music, but he had good reasons for walking. Give him solitude over thousands of screaming fans any day of the week.

These days, the only company he's truly interested in is that of the vet who works closely with his dog rescue—Dr. Laney Lawson. She's brilliant, funny, beautiful, and best of all, she has no idea he used to be a pop star.

Then Adam's bandmates reach out about a one-time reunion concert benefiting a charity that's close to his heart, and he starts to wonder if some things are worth a little extra attention. He loves the idea of singing again, but saying yes would out him to the small mountain community that has become his refuge. Worse, it would out him to Laney.

Old hurts can't stay buried forever, and something tells Adam that, scary or not, saying yes is the decision he needs to make. He just has to hope he doesn't lose the life—or the woman—he loves in the process.

Once Upon a Boyband has all the crackling chemistry and sizzling kisses you want in a low-spice, closed-door romcom. Perfect for fans of romantic comedy with a little less heat.

Laney and Adam have so much chemistry. And I love that she is a veterinarian and loved him as a kid from afar. Laney was Midnight Rush bigger fan and her favorite member of the band was Deke. They broke up years ago when Deke was in a bad place after his mom’s death. She doesn’t know that her client Adam really is Deke.

As mentioned, it’s great chemistry, multiple POV and they aren’t perfect characters. They are very REAL characters. The minor characters also stand out, Laney’s coworker Percy and Adam’s sister Sarah. The plot was just unbelievable enough to be a nice escape for me.

Bye I am going to Jenny proctors website now to read the bonus epilogue.

Thank you Jenny Proctor for the eARC.

WHAT A CRUSH, WHAT A RUSH.

I’m running with these lyrics and can’t be stopped.

ANYWAYS.

Jenny Proctor is officially my favorite author when it comes to celebrity romance stories. I love them. She reminds me that any trope can work if done correctly, and hot dang is it done WELL in Once Upon a Boyband. I loved it. I’m obsessed with the whole Midnight Rush band I will accept nothing less than a romance about each one of them.

I loved the relationship dynamic between Adam and Laney. The trajectory was different than the standard romance check list and I could not get enough. There were multiple moments where I was like YES, THIS IS HOW YOU ROMANCE. Because it just felt truly authentic and real and sweet and tender. I loved that they truly felt adult too and had the hard conversations that led them to be able to move forward.

It’s such an easy book to fly through. It is a little bit heavier than JP’s usually books but don’t let that deter you. The themes are amazing and pull at your heart strings. I loved Adam’s journey to healing and allowing himself to not be weighed down by everything he was trying to carry alone. I loved the friendships and small town and going to my favorite fictional farm again.

I’m aware I’m rambling, TRUST ME READ IT OKAY.

Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary Romance
- Language: none
- Romance: heated kisses
- Content Warnings: loss of mother (recounted, recurrent theme; cancer)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Genre: contemporary romance
Content: loss of a parent (past), grief (VERY present), infrequent mild language, makeouts

Holy freaking fudgesicles! I loved this book. It is a love story but it is so much more than that. I had a heads up from a friend that parental death to cancer was a big part of this book and I was grateful for that heads up, so here I am passing it along to you.

Let's start with sweet Adam. From ages 15-18, Adam was in a boy band. He walked away and left everything to do with that life behind when his mother died of cancer. Adam's grief that hasn't really been dealt with is a HUGE part of this story. This resonated with me so much. I am days away from the 10-month anniversary of my own mother's death to cancer. I lived with her throughout her entire cancer experience and I was 34. I honestly cannot imagine being a teenager and trying to deal with the feelings of knowing your mom is sick and dying, the pressure of being famous, and having to perform on the other side of the world to help with the bills that come from having an ill family member. That's A LOT. In 8 years, he hasn't looked back. Now, he lives in anonymity in a remote town in North Carolina running a dog rescue.

Laney also lives in a remote town in North Carolina as a vet. Coincidentally, she happens to be the vet for Adam's rescue dogs. Laney seriously cracked me up with her ramblings when she was nervous, and warmed my heart with her determination to show Adam that she was willing to fight for him.

The reveal of Adam's past to Laney had my mouth falling open. The relationship between these two was just so great. I adored the proof that Adam was given to be able to see that his mom was proud of him and his music career. It was SO sweet.

I loved seeing a glimpse Flint & Perry Hawthorne and their families and the nod to the Appies. That was so fun! Also, Percy was freaking hilarious. He added so much humor to the story!

In short, read this book. You will laugh, you will swoon, you'll tear up. (If you're a crier, you'll probably cry.) Also, don't miss the bonus epilogue because AWWWW!!!!

Favorite Quotes:
🤣"Not that I'm assuming you aren't dating. You totally could be. Just because my social life is nonexistent doesn't mean that's true for everyone here. You probably are dating. I mean, look at you. Who wouldn't want—you know what? I'm going to stop talking now.”
“You sure? You don't want to add anything else? Because this is pretty entertaining for me.”

🏈 If this is the game we're playing, teasing, pushing boundaries, trading touches and looks, then send me in, coach.

‼️"Sometimes the hardest conversations are the ones most worth having.”

😟"All worry does is give a small thing a big shadow.”

😍"You want me to go to New York with you?"
He shrugs. "I want you to go everywhere with me.”

❤️But through all the ups and downs, we've only grown closer. We've learned how to communicate, how to fight in a way that makes it very easy to make up after. And we're stronger for having worked through the hard and the easy.

Second read: I loved this story so much I bought my own copy. SO good! How can I possibly be patient about waiting for Freddie and Ivy's story???

Thank you NetGalley and Victory Editing for providing me with this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

What a sweet, delightful story! I've been wanting to read Jenny Proctor for a while ever since I started reading some of her fellow authors of the "Appies" and "Sweater Weather" series. This includes some of my new favorite authors Emma St. Clair, Courtney Walsh, and Melanie Jacobson.

So, how much did I enjoy this book? Well, I just ordered "Absolutely Not in Love" and "Romancing the Grump" as well as joining her newsletter.

I loved the main characters, the love story, the snarky dialogue, the cute puppies, and and the satisfying HEA. I also enjoyed the bonus epilogue and am really looking forward to reading about the other band members' love stories in the future.

No profanity and just kissing. Not to sound like a crotchety old lady (well, too late because I am!) but it's so refreshing to read an adult love story without having to navigate a plethora of f-bombs and graphic sex. I'm a hypocrite as I still read authors whose stories include this because I love their writing but it's a real treat to find other authors who embrace the concept of leaving some things to the reader's imagination.

Anyway, I highly recommend this lovely brain candy to anyone who enjoys an adult fairy tale that leaves you smiling at the end.

I've been so excited to read this one and it was even better than I anticipated. I mean boy bands and puppies! Be still my heart! This book was so perfect for me. It made me feel carefree and brought me back to my NKOTB loving days!

I love how the book opened with Laney describing her love for Midnight Rush and Deke back in her teen days. It was all so relatable to anyone who has ever loved a boyband. Me! That's me!
Honestly this entire story played out perfectly. Laney was real to me as an introvert whose love for a boyband as a teen made her feel seen and understood and less alone. Now she is all grown up but still enjoys their music. Adam, formerly Deke of Midnight Rush owns a dog rescue and has been hiding out in this small town since the band broke up. He is kind and the perfect catch. I mean ordering the pasta dish Laney sort of wanted on their date just so she could try it! The piggy back ride to the barn! Swoon! Laney’s reaction when she finds out that Adam is actually Deke was appropriate. Her disbelief, remembering the times she thought he seemed familiar to her. It was so fun! I also loved her co-worker/friend Percy. He made me laugh out loud so many times! I loved the cute awkwardness in the beginning between Adam and Laney and after they got together they were oozing the chemistry! The friendship between Adam and Freddie (another Midnight Rush member) was natural even after all the years that have passed. I enjoyed their scenes together. This one dealt with some deeper topics and brought out all the emotions. I could feel all that Adam was going through and it definitely pulled at my heartstrings, but the story was also light and funny. The book had so much going on and just so much to love. It was fantastic in every way! Please don't miss it!

Content Awareness: Death of a parent in the past. Ongoing grief in the present.

Talk about a blast from the past! I was having so many memories flashing through my mind while I read this book! I loved it so much!!! All of those boy band crushes and all of the great music I would dance and sing to! This one just takes the cake for flashbacks and reliving great parts of my childhood!!! I found myself giggling over these characters. Like silly giggling thanks to their antics and just their goodness and cuteness! *Happy Sigh*

Laney is just adorable and I loved her goodness and confidence. She's a great friend and wants to help others. And those traits help her a lot when she and Adam have their first scene together. Honestly, I couldn't help but giggle at Laney's friend and co-worker. He was a hoot! And one of Laney's greatest cheerleaders in her becoming friends with Adam. *Smirks*

I'm sitting here typing this review and giggling, remembering the conversations between these characters and all of the great puns and one liners!

And not only is the humor wonderful, but the chemistry and sweet romance will have you curling your toes and sighing for all of those teenage dreams coming true for Laney! New Kids anyone? *Winks*

I can't wait for more books about Midnight Rush's band members!!! Soooo excited!!!

Content: Clean. Some kisses. Some mild innuendos. The characters share a bedroom but do nothing more than kiss a little and then sleep.

I received a copy from the author via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Thank you @bookedwiththeemilys @jennyproctorbooks for a gifted copy of this book!

This book is available now.

Content Warnings from the Author:

When I saw the title of this book, if you don't know me, you know I had to sign up for this book tour! After I read the first 50 pages, I knew this book was the book for me. I have never read this author before but I have seen her book around the book community. And honestly I am ready for the next book in this series.

"I've actually been pretty proud of myself today. I met Leo and Jace and hung out with all of Midnight Rush at the same time and I didn't lose my cool."
"Flint Hawthrone was the last straw, huh? You couldn't handle it anymore."
"It was."

This book gave me so many swoony moments and I felt that Laney was just so relatable!! I felt like she had the appropriate reaction when she learned that the man she started dating was in her favorite boy band. And the way she found out, made me laugh out loud! It was prefect!

I just love the relationship between Adam and Laney. They were both too shy to make a first move but an opportunity arose and Laney took her chance and Adam followed. Also how can you not be attracted to a bearded man who owns a dog rescue?! There were too many moments that had me smiling and feeling all giddy.

As I mentioned this was my first Jenny book and I knew going into this that this was only going to have kissing. As much as the intimacy would have been such a bonus while reading, I honestly did not miss the spice. There was just so much other stuff happening that I felt like it was not needed. I wanted to note this for those who may want to read this and are looking (or not looking) for a closed door romance.

Also Percy is the best sidekick! He cracked me up! As I mentioned above I am already looking forward to the next book which will focus on Freddie (who also was a great side character) and his assistant Ivy.

I just really loved this book and I am so glad that I was a part of the team to read this! I also loved seeing everyone's reaction in our group chat while reading. We all have shared the same sentiment and prior to me reading, their excitement towards it made me so excited to read it!

It took me way too long to actually get to reading this book! I, at first, waited because I wanted to listen to it on audio. Then, once I had the audio, it just fell down my TBR list for awhile. Well, after listening to this one, I don't think I can make myself wait very long before reading book two when it releases.

This story is, without a doubt, one of my top favorites of the year. I loved the way Adam and Laney fell for each other. I loved how the reveal of who Adam was played out and the fact that he turns out to be her boy band crush from years earlier. I loved seeing the way the band interacted with each other and the unwavering support that Laney had for Adam in all of the hard decisions he had to make.

Adam has some real troubles from his past that weigh him down. The guilt and anger he carries that are wrapped up in the memories surrounding the death of his mom form the basis of every decision he makes. This fun and swoony story is also the story of his journey to healing and finally allowing himself to find happiness and love.

As a big fan of *NSYNC and then an even bigger, weirdly obsessed for a high school teenager fan of One Direction (seriously, we need a reunion tour) this book is every fan girls dream. I wouldn’t call it fan-fic, but it’s definitely an elevated way of reliving every preteens fantasies about her favorite boy band. So much so I finished it in an afternoon.
Laney was in LOVE with Deke from Midnight Rush as a teen. Then she went to college and became a vet and Deke disappeared after leaving the band and no one heard from him for 8 years (suspiciously the same amount of time 1D has been on ‘a break’ lol). When Laney starts to develop a crush on the hot ‘lumberjack’ Adam , a local dog rescuer who brings his puppies in for vet care, they bond over their taste in music. They keep bonding over their shared love of dogs until Adam needs to let her in on his biggest secret.
The story line flows amazingly and is a fun read from start to finish. I only hope there are more stories where we leave more about each boy, especially Freddie and Ivy his assistant.
Thank you NetGalley and publishers for the ARC of this story. I can’t wait to see where the series goes.

Plot- Realistic and believable celebrity romances are extremely hard to pull off, but this one accomplished the feat!
The first chapter was rough, tho. The FMC comes off as desperate and socially inept. I was starting to dread how the author was going to have some A-list celebrity come along and unrealistically be randomly smitten with her. My relief was palpable when chapter 2 revealed that one of her regular, down-to-earth clients was the male love interest. YES! We find out right away that he used to be in a top-charts boy band, and it does play a role in the book.
Loved that this was actually a believable celebrity/noncelebrity romance.

Writing - Fine. Nothing to complain of, but it didn’t have any witty banter or humor.

Characters- Fine. I liked them both.

Romance- It was cute. Average chemistry.

Content-

Language- no swearing.
Spice- some kissing. Clean.
Substance abuse- none
Violence- none
Cover- ok
POV- dual POV
Cliffhanger- no
Format- audiobook via Audible
Narration- Both male & female performers were great.

You know I love a celebrity romcom, and this was super cute. I could totally see it as a movie playing in my head the entire time, so I expect to see it on a streaming service soon.

Laney and Adam are just darling together, and the addition of all the puppies and celebrities made it that much better!!

Working overnight shifts can be pretty tough, especially when you don’t work them often. I am so glad I had this book with me to keep me entertained! Once Upon a Boy Band by Jenny Proctor was such a fun romcom to pass the hours of two pretty long nights. This scratched the itch of my high school fanfiction daydream days, when all you could ever dream of was to have your favorite artist or actor actually fall in love with you in your adult every day life. If you’re looking for a fun, easy reading, low-spice, closed-door romance with no third-act breakup, then this is for you! It was just a good time from start to finish.

Thanks NetGalley and Jenny Proctor for the great read!

Jenny Proctor is the absolute best at writing swoony clean rom com books! I ate this one up and finished it in 1.5 days.

I love that she brought out every one of our childhood fantasies with the dmc dating her boy band crush but it's so much better than what you are probably thinking - like "yeah right!"

This book had me in a choke hold. I was actually crying through parts of it, especially during the re-make of The Start of Forever - be still my rom com beating heart.

HUGE five stars to Jenny Proctor - cannot wait to read the other books in this series!!

First thought: Loved it!!! This book is perfection. It has everything: cuteness galore, dogs, music, lol moments, friendship and fake engagement. To all the boy band lovers from the 90/2000s this is your book. I couldn’t put this down - that’s how much I truly loved it.

Laney is a closet Midnight Crush Super-fan, her love of the band is secretly hidden away. Her fav was always Zeke, she used to kiss his poster every night before bed. But not she is a vet and is practicing with her dad in a small town. Her options for men and dating are very slim. One of the clients they see is a local rescue that is ran by a man named Adam.

Ok so Adam is a total hottie but Laney is an introvert and starting a conversation is hard. But today when checking out Adam’s puppies she realizes they all have musical names. Laney loves all things music and that helped her strike up a conversation with him. It’s an instant attraction so when he asks her out, she says yes.

Adam runs a rescue and has made it his mission to stay out of the public eye. Eight years ago he walked away from the spotlight and never wants to go back because of a promise he made. But fate has other plans and he realizes he can’t run from his past. What Adam didn’t plan on was falling for the vet who also had a huge obsession with the band he was in, she just hasn’t connected he’s Zeke yet. What will happen when he drops that bomb, will Laney run or stay.

Literally Themes you’ll find:

* Introverts to Lovers
* Veterinarian FMC
* Fake Engagement
* Hidden Identity MMC
* Dogs!!!!
* Boy Band Obsession
* Dual POV
* Only Kissing 💋
* Small Town

This was more of a it's me not the book because there's some good grief journey in here and the romance was cute (although insta-lovey) plus who doesn't love rescue dogs but the fame stuff just didn't hit for me. I also will say I missed Jenny's normal banter between the characters. I had mixed feelings about Laney's friend. I know he was probably meant to be funny, but I felt like he just was inappropriate at times. The romance did come off lustful at times, which I'm not a fan of because unpopular opinion, but romance and lust are very different, but overall, a decent, fun read but not my favorite from her. If you like boybands and love closed-door fame romances, check this out.

I love books that blend poignancy with some fun and lightheartedness, and this one does it so incredibly well. This delightful novel is a lovely mix of humor and romance, with a lot of depth and emotion.

Laney, a small-town veterinarian, crosses paths with Adam, a mysterious dog rescue owner who turns out to be her teenage celebrity crush, Deke, from a famous boyband, now living a secret life as a recluse.

When a member of the band shows up unexpectedly, asking Adam to join them for a reunion concert, the pull of music is still there, but there was a reason why he left the band. It’s something that still pains him, and he’s not sure he can get past it.

What I loved:
Excellently crafted characters
Former boy band member
Music references
Dual pov
Meet-cute
Laney’s journals
Great chemistry between MCs
Lots of kissing
Super cute flirting
All the puppies
Hawthorne appearances
Healing and growth
The song

I loved the positive way the author portrayed the themes of grief and healing, having open and mature communication, and the power of therapy. It was done with sensitivity and insight. The story deals with some tender and heavy topics, while still being very upbeat and SO much fun.

The unique combination of boy bands, secret identity, rescue dogs, and a seriously swoony romance, made for a fun, addicting, and heartwarming read. I loved every minute of it.

Thanks to Jenny Proctor and Booked with the Emilys for the gifted copy!

𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞: Dr. Laney Lawson was OBSESSED with Midnight Rush when she was in high school… posters, fan fic, online message boards, you name it. Now, she’s a successful vet in a small town who happens to fall for the handsome, lumberjack-looking owner of a local dog rescue, who happens to be the member of Midnight Rush who fell out of the limelight years ago.

𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗪: I know that hockey romance is all the rage right now, but let me tell ya — I think boy bands are coming next. This is absolutely my favorite Jenny Proctor date to book. There is so much depth to this relationship and it was just so stinkin cute that I was grinning pretty much the whole time I was reading it. The chemistry is perfection and you can’t go wrong with a bearded man who can play the guitar and also has a bunch of puppies. I loved the cameos from the past books and the setup for future books and cannot WAIT to read the stories of all the other guys in Midnight Rush. If you ever went through a boy band phase, you absolutely need to read this.

Eeeek! A new Jenny Proctor series?? About a BOY BAND?!?! Pinch me! I’m already 100% invested in each of the Midnight Rush band members and can’t wait for all of their stories!

Adam and Laney’s journey was different than your typical romance novel formula and I was so excited to see where things would go! And I tell you, it did not disappoint!! Jenny has magic in her writing that makes you feel and connect with the characters and their story.

Some heavier themes were present in this story, but handled in a realistic and sweet way with plenty of kisses and humor to have you smiling your way through it. There were some parts that had me laughing out loud and rereading parts aloud to my husband because they were so funny!

I loved all the Easter eggs to Jenny’s other books. I’m so obsessed with her characters. I loved all the healthy conversations that were had between characters and how they helped each other through their tough things.

This book had me squealing and kicking my
feet and listening to One Direction nonstop! I may not have been a big 1D fan before, but I needed somewhere to channel the energy and excitement I felt from this story and I needed to hear them sing! So since I couldn’t listen to Midnight Rush themselves, One Direction was the next best thing.

Read this book. It’s so good! And do not miss the bonus epilogue!! It had me tearing up in the best way possible!

🔥: Lots of Kissing!

This book follow Adam “Deke” Driscoll who left a world of boyband stardom to take on the simple small town life. He runs a dog rescue and absolutely loves being away from the limelight. He works closely with Dr. Laney Lawson, the small town vet. She has no idea about Adam’s past life as a popstar. But she just happens to be a massive closet fan of the boy band Midnight Rush. Things become more than just vet and client between these two and sparks fly! However, Adam’s old agent starts calling to get the band back together to help out one of the other bandmates. Adam loves the idea of helping out his friend and would love to sing again. But if he did this he would have to share his big secret with Laney and the simple small town life would be no more. What will he choose?

This story had me giggling and kicking my feet! As a massive 1D and Jonas Brothers girlie this story was right up my alley. I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t dreamt up ideal MASH scenarios with myself and Harry Styles so it was a perfect representation of one of my ideal childhood romances! Laney and Adam had perfect chemistry right from the start. I loved their banter and communication (except the giant secret 😂). I did love how they opened up to one another and grew to communicate their feelings. I also really enjoyed all the side characters and the animals named after singers. Another thing I always love about Jenny’s books is the setting. I’m from Western NC and now live in East TN so this book’s setting was a perfect blend of my two worlds! I can’t wait to read more from this series!

A huge thank you to Jenny and her team for the ARC copy!

“Fair warning. This story isn’t very believable. Most stories start with once upon a time. Mine? It’s more like once upon a boyband.”

Be still my ever loving boyband obsessed heart! From the dedication to the very first line to the very last page, my heart was completely captured by this Jenny Proctor book. What girl hasn’t dreamed about meeting her favorite singer? My journals, daydreams and every thought was filled with my crush as a teen and I can’t even imagine what it would be like to meet someone, fall onto the deep and serious path to love, only to find out he’s the love of my wildest dreams.

Laney is a vet and finds herself connected with Adam through dogs and his dog rescue. These two characters are everything and their journey is so poignant and intense, yet full of longing, hope, fulfillment, and healing. They are extremely well-written and vividly come to life and I could insert myself into Laney’s life quite easily, eagerly devouring every single bit. While light-hearted and sweet, there are some past traumas and regrets to sift through. But their chemistry and kisses? Phew, sizzling, yet sweet.

Not only did I buy myself a copy for my shelves, but I also used an audible credit to listen to these talented narrators. This story is satisfying on multiple levels and I loved the nods to other books/series by this author. You can bet I’ll snatch up the second book the minute I can.

If you have ever LOVED a boy band this romance is a must read. Teenage Laney who decorated her room with band posters and slept with pillows in their likeness grows up to find herself dating her most beloved band member. Talk about a dream come true! Adam “Drake” Driscoll left the world of music and screaming fans behind to live a quiet, anonymous life running a dog rescue.

When his former band mate and best friend shows up unexpectedly asking him to return to the band for one reunion concert that could help him make over his tarnished image, how can he say no? He owes Freddie everything, including his current life of anonymity.

I loved how Jenny Proctor took every teenage girl’s dream and made it come alive in such a sweet romance that was full of chemistry. Laney and Adam were so good for each other. I was genuinely invested in their relationship and rooting for their happiness.

There was so much to fangirl over in this book - the friendships, the found family, the focus on grief and healing and of course the dogs. So many sweet and mischievous puppies that just added such joy to the storyline.

I’m so excited that we will get more of these characters. I cannot wait for book 2 of this series, which will be fellow boy band member Freddie’s love story.

It was delightfully cheesy, especially as a boyband loved... And exactly what would happen if Joey McIntyre ever fell in love with me
