I picked this book up via a local bookstore during quarantine. The fact that it had a chapter written by Fred Rogers and was a compilation of reflections on Henri Nouwen were huge motivators to get it. They are both some of my favorite people. It did not disappoint. I took it in slowly, and intend to keep it with my personal collection to continue reflecting on more in future years, I have a feeling different chapters will resonate differently as I go through different seasons.
This is an excellent little book of essays written in honor of Nouwen just a few years after his death. Writers include Philip Yancey and Fred Rogers. The strongest essays blend personal memories of interacting with Nouwen, excerpts from his writings, and discussions of his influence in the writer's life. The best part is the final entry, which is the transcript of a television interview with Nouwen, where he briefly outlines his own history, and explains his philosophy of accepting pain and loneliness as a way to finding hope. Despite the unfortunate pun of the title, I definitely recommend this book.
