From the breakout star of MasterChef Australia, Dan Churchill’s DudeFood, a cookbook that will educate, motivate, and inspire men to put on an apron and turn on the oven.
Attention, dudes: you no longer have an excuse to avoid the kitchen. Dan Churchill has written a cookbook for guys who have always wanted to cook, but don’t know where to start; boyfriends who are intimated by a frying pan; and sons who have too long relied on their parents for meals. These mouth-watering recipes are easy to read and, most important, easy to replicate.
When Churchill was twelve, he put on an apron and agreed to take his turn cooking dinner for his family. Now in his twenties, Churchill draws on his self-taught experience in the kitchen, along with his extensive knowledge of nutrition, to create simple, delicious, and healthy meals. Divided into sections based on everyday scenarios and featuring forty-five recipes, DudeFood shares the secrets to cooking a repertoire of eggs, seafood, poultry, meats, vegetables, sandwiches, and even desserts. If it’s Sunday afternoon and you’re preparing for another long workweek: save time and money with Churchill’s slow roasted beef, a hearty meal you can enjoy that same evening, but also slice up for lunch tomorrow. If it’s early Wednesday morning, and you’re getting ready to hit the gym: mix the ingredients for a banana chocolate smoothie in your blender, which provides the right amount of protein you need to repair your muscles after lifting weights. If it’s Saturday night—date night—and you’re eager to impress, follow Churchill’s directions for baking a shortbread cookie topped with delicious chocolate ganache.
Packed with helpful tips and shortcuts, as well as beautiful photographs, this book will turn any dude into a cook.
Dan Churchill is a cook, author, physical trainer, and speaker. In 2013, he appeared on MasterChef Australia, which aired in more than ninety countries. His recipes have been featured in publications worldwide, and he has appeared on several television shows.
Great easy to make recipes for all to cook at home.
My View: A cook book for the novice and not so novice cook (and not just for men - though I do applaud the attempt to engage more men in everyday cooking). Dan Churchill has produced another healthy eating guide full of recipes that are contemporary and follow current food trends (using ingredients such as** Teff, coconut milk, couscous, quinoa, some low carb recipes, protein shakes, extraordinary yet simple breakfast suggestions etc.). Dan’s recipes are always vibrant and fresh. The accompanying images are simply yet beautifully presented – the meals shout out EAT ME.
Dan provides hints and suggestions – and one that is so basic and makes so much sense you would think it doesn’t need to be stated - but believe me it does – even experienced cooks need to be reminded now and again to read the entire recipe (ingredients required, prep and cooking time) – rushing when you suddenly realise oh no it takes two hours of slow cooking and I only have one hour before my guests arrive – unfortunately happens to all of us at some point. I suggest you read through the recipe at least the night before.
My tip – never try an untested recipe on that important dinner date – if you are inviting guests to share a meal it really does make sense to have tried the recipe beforehand - that way there is less chance you will flustered, or missing an important ingredient or a necessary pot/ right sized baking dish etc or rushed when you are preparing the meal for others. You will know what you need to buy beforehand and have tasted the meal and know what adjustments to make for your particular oven (all ovens vary) or for your particular taste (more/less seasonings, salt, sugar etc) and you will have the timing right.
From this book I made Protein Brownies (which were delicious). And cooked the best ever steak by following Dan’s easy instructions. And there are so many other recipes I want to try.
**Teff is an ancient grain currently being touted as healthy grain alternative to wheat
This was an OK cookbook. Do I think that it is the type of cookbook that a guy clueless about cooking would pick up for his first foray into the culinary arts - no. Although the dishes aren't too complicated, they could be daunting for a first time cook - especially a guy who thinks cooking is not for him (for which, according to the chapter, "Why was this Cookbook Created?", it is designed). I just can't see a new "guy" chef who is picking up his first cookbook, buying one that has coriander, coconut milk, fish sauce and brown rice as being necessary pantry staples. Maybe the "dudes" in Australia are different? That being said, the pictures are appetizing and many of the recipes sound tasty. In compliance with FTC guidelines, I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
I bought this book as a way to learn how to cook meat dishes. I was pleasantly Surprised to also find other easy, fun other meals to make! This is an awesome cookbook that I will have fun with and buy a copy for my college age nephew
Don’t be put off by the “dude” tag here. In fact, rejoice in it, for this is a Good Cookbook. Handsome, boyish author Churchill was on a show called MasterChef Australia and (fun fact) touted the book on Good Morning America by preparing a burger for Blake Lively. This succeeds admirably in its intent: to teach young men to cook “simple, healthy, delicious, and fun meals” for themselves and the people they love. Recipes emphasize tastiness and nutritional density (meaning there are few wasted calories, Chumley), and chapters cut to the chase with titles like “How To Impress a Girl” (e.g., Peri-Peri Roast Chicken, Poached Salmon with a Walnut Apple Salad, etc.) and “The Hangover Cure” (e.g., Toad in a Hole, Bro Burger). There are five to seven recipes per chapter for a total of 45 and (importantly) all are accomplishable dishes that look seriously bangin’ (indeed, the food porn rating is a 10+). It’s cool. There are buttloads of things that a dude can do to waste the day (writing book reviews, for example), but in here are some actual useful skills that will enhance your life—and the lives of those eating with you. None of the recipes is too chi-chi or calls for insane, bullshit ingredients (we’re not making Heritage Loaf or anything) and the book’s tone is unerringly encouraging: “We all start somewhere,” Churchill notes. “If you burn your potatoes, you’ve learned to lower the heat next time.” VERDICT Though easy to dismiss as “gooberhead dudes can cook,” the reality is that this, alongside Tyler Capps’s Cooking Comically: Recipes So Easy You‘ll Actually Make Them and Steven Raichlen’s Man Made Meals: The Essential Cookbook for Guys, demonstrates a few basic recipes for dudes unaccustomed to cooking. Focused on crowd-pleasing dishes that will garner positive reactions, it will admirably help along a lifetime of healthful cooking. A must-have for any novice in the kitchen, or anyone just simply interested in cooking some seriously delicious meals! When all of the recipes in DudeFood require minimal equipment in the kitchen, that's fantastic news for those just entering the world of pots, pans, blenders and stoves.
Right away, the set-up is simple. Dan explains what items are a “must have” in our pantry to make cooking easier with a simple list.
What I like the most about this cookbook is that each section is broken down with manageable food dishes that will inspire, no matter what your experience level is. Easy recipes, clear instructions and delicious pictures.
This cookbook is a must have for your guy (or for you!) Guys, your significant other will appreciate you and will be impressed if you make anything from this collection! Gals, this is a great buy as a gift for Father’s Day, Mother’s Day or any day for anyone you want to make a tasty meal.
I received an ARC from Simon & Schuster for a fair and honest review. It’s a great price and I would buy this for myself or gift it to a friend. Everyone should have this cookbook in their kitchen!
Dan Churchill, star of MasterChef Australia, has made the perfect cookbook for guys everywhere. With his degree in Exercise Science, Churchill has also made sure that nutrition and calories are a big part of the equation without sacrificing flavor or looks. DudeFood aims to help guys eat right and also impress the ladies. In the Foods That Last chapter, the recipes are filling and also make enough for tomorrow. The Berry Compote French Toast in Hangover Cure looks heavenly as well as relatively healthy! None of the recipes have any crazy hard to find ingredients and he photos are amazing for every dish, making my mouth water and making it impossible to ignore. Squash Blossoms is one of the most intriguing recipes I have seen in a long time. I can't wait to try these recipes out.
I thought this was a well-thought out cookbook, appropriate for women as well as men. I liked that all the recipes had wonderful photos attached. My husband is the cook of the family and I am the kitchen supervisor....For the last few months we have been on a fairly strict diet and are almost at our goal. This is why we haven't actually tried making an of Dan's yummy offerings. I can hardly wait to try that Slow Roasted Beef and the Protein Brownies. I look forward to eating quite a few of the recipes in this book.
This promising book was sent to me as a Goodreads Giveaway in exchange for an honest critique.
What an honor to win a free copy of this book!! I skimmed through it and I was well-pleased. The recipes are easy and right up my alley. I was a bit disappointed there weren't very many drinks in here. But I think the author makes up for it with the rest. I really enjoyed the format, design,& layout of the book as well. Great job!! I cannot wait to try a few of the recipes myself.
I won this book in the first reads giveaway in hopes of it inspiring my husband to learn to cook. I thumbed through the recipes and they look delicious and am sure to see my husband cooking up a storm in the coming days. I really like how the recipes are categorized. this book speaks in "dude" language!
Ladies will love this book because it's filled with pictures of hot, ripped dudes. Dudes will love this book because it shows them how to eat well -- and everyone these days knows that Macca's doesn't cut it -- with minimal fuss. The cookbook is arranged around situations dudes normally face: impressing a girl, gym workouts, and cutting your calories.
I'm not a "Dude" but I really love this book! It's all super easy to make & looks delicious!! Easy recipes & instructions...perfect for anyone, dude or chick, especially those of us who aren't great in the kitchen!!
Meh. It has a good recipe:picture ratio, but nothing that really grabbed me. Plus, you have to wade through a whole lot of weird dude nonsense to get to them.
