Harlow Sanctum #2

A Ballad of Phantoms and Hope: Harlow Sanctum Interconnected Series, Book 2

Rate this book
"Death is not the end of us."

Follow the emotional and heartwarming story of two mentally unwell ghosts who've lost their way.

Lanston

It's been five years since I died and I'm still here. Still haunting this world. I've all but given up hope of passing on the other side when I'm dragged to a spring performance with Yelina and Jericho. It's there that I see the most beautiful phantom I've ever witnessed dancing on the stage. Only after meeting her do I realize how similar we are. But darkness chases her, keeping her distant from me. But how far am I willing to go to find peace?

Ophelia

I've evaded other phantoms for years. To keep them safe and away from the shadows that haunt me. But for some reason, I can't stay away from him. He invites me to join him at Harlow Sanctum, where he asks me to join him in completing our bucket list. He wants to pass on. But I have a dark past that keeps me from wanting to follow him into the dark.

This is the spin-off to The Fabric of Our Souls, which must be listened to first to follow the characters in this story.

New York Times, USA Today, and #1 International bestselling author K. M. Moronova has enjoyed telling dreary stories as far as she can remember. She adores reading and writing dark-themed, romantic books with plot twists and emotional turns. Often, she is found drying flowers in her study or drinking tea while relaxing in her garden. 'My light died a long time ago—flickering with the many exhales of disapproval until finally, with one big breath, it was blown completely out. Like a withering candle left out in the cold, surely to hush and diminish as expected.'

'This lovely phantom is the very image of tragedy. She is a ballad of mournful movements, bones, and tattered lace—a symphony unlike any I’ve endured.'

"I want my love to haunt you. Until the stars die-until all the water in the ocean dries and we're all that's left in this cruel, dark world."

Sobbed my face off! This book is so freaking beautiful. °❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:・

Every now and then, I'm fortunate enough to come across an author who just speaks my language. Moronova has managed to compose such a beautiful and mesmerizing sequel to The Fabric of Our Souls - I really didn't think it was possible.

This was such a mournful story, at times leaving me feeling bereft while still managing to be hopeful, leaving my heart on the verge of bursting. What an odd feeling, joy and anguish simultaneously.

Words cannot express just how enchanting and dark, yet also luminous, sorrowful, and reassuring this story is. It's more than a story; it's an adventure, a dark fairytale that captivates your heart and speaks to your soul.

You do not simply read this story; you experience it. It's a whole feeling, a whole vibe.

I highlighted 52 separate passages in this book, some of them being entire pages. I'm just so blown away- I don't even have the words.

I'm completely in awe. Moronova has done it again.
I feel whole and broken at the same time.❤️‍🩹

“None of us are good. We’re simply human.”

"Lanston Nevers. I don’t know that I’ve ever met a man so filled with somber thoughts and lovely words."

"Is it weird that I’m elated that we’re connected with the chords of headphones? It satiates the hopeless romantic in me."

“I love you, Ophelia. Fiercely, unconditionally, until the stars die.”
“Until the ocean dries.”

✵ ✵ ✵ ✵ ✵ ✵ ✵ ✵ ✵ ✵

It was an impossible task picking just a few meaningful quotes for this review as I've highlighted over 100 sections throughout this book.
The language used to tell Lanston & Ophelia's story has me completely enchanted. It's beautiful, poetic, descriptive, raw and real, making you love and feel for the characters deeply.

Kudos to the author for not stepping back from slightly taboo subjects, but instead leaning in and giving us something gripping, tearjerking, and something that I will keep with me for a long time. 🖤

In this book, we follow Lanston & Ophelia beyond death on a journey to find peace after both having lived tough and traumatic lives. Juggling the trauma of their past and the potential of hope after death, growing in their self-acceptance whilst leaving loved ones behind but also finding new loves beyond.
This book romanticizes death and delves into topics such as suicidal ideation. It's very dark although beautiful, check your TW's before going into this. Your mental health matters!🖤

Compared to The Fabric of our Souls, I think this might perceived as a bit slow-paced, as it doesn't have that same mystery-intrigue that TFooS brought. It is slower at times, however, it's exactly what this book needs with the heavy themes it contains.
It provides us with heart-wrenching moments combining those with sweet, lighthearted ones and eye-opening ones; building up such a deep, pure love and connection between the main characters.

I could see myself in thousand small moments in this book and through this book found a glimpse of peace for myself as well.❤️‍🩹 Thank you.

K.M. Moronova if you happen to come by this, I need you to make The Fabric of our Souls & A Ballad of Phantoms and Hope into like a 25 part series. I promise I'll read all of them thousand times over and force them upon all my friends as well. We need more of your writing and characters in this world.🥹

⌞Pre-read:⌝
I read the prequel, The Fabric of our Souls, earlier this year. That book changed me and will likely end up amongst my top reads this year. ❤️‍🩹

Ever since I knew this book was going to be released I've been eager to get my hands on it.
Going into this book I know I'll likely cry my heart out and feel all kinds of hurt, but I'm just happy to be here lol.

Buddy read with my love Heather. 🖤🫂

"For the weary darlings out in the world who seek hope"

"Sometimes, we just need to release the broken parts of us. Unchain them and let them be free."

TRAGIC, POETIC, RAW 💔😭
If you have not read "Fabric of Our Souls" please go read that one first and please check your trigger warnings. I said this with the first book and I will say it again, we are lucky enough to come across books on our reading journey that not only make us "feel" but also change our very being and Moronova you did it again. Please never stop writing the way that you do because you don't just write a story, you touch so many of us on a deeper level and give those unheard a voice. This book is so beautifully written that it simply is Perfection. 🥰🥰
I have never read writing that makes me want to cry just because of how hauntingly beautiful it is. Both tragic and poetic, this book shines a light on mental health, love, and closure in such a relatable way. This book was everything; a book that not only shatters your heart to pieces but also heals it in the process.💔💝
"Souls shouldn't have to suffer such ruination at the gritty hands of the world. A cold and heartless plane of existence"

"We are all ruined in some way, bruised and scarred.

"There really aren't many people like him out in the world anymore. When did we, as humans, become so cold and withdrawn?"

"People like us traverse the world alone because we were raised to believe that we have to. Smile and pretend. Smile and pretend. No one cares about your depression. Smile and pretend. Don't let them see what you really are."

Lanston and Ophelia: A story of two kindred souls that not only fall in love, but show us the importance of hope, healing, forgiveness of others and self-forgiveness, closure, and the beauty of loving someone even in their darkest moments.
There are moments in one’s existence when you connect with another in a mere second, something sinks deep into your soul, planting a yearning that may never fade. A song that chills your bones and rattles the blood in your veins.

"No, with her, it’s as if the world tilts around us—our gravity too immense for the living. We orbit one another, hands reaching and seeking the light."

"How can it be that you come to know someone more than you know yourself? I would know her in any life, this I am certain. I don’t believe in such things, but should reincarnation be real… I’m beginning to think Ophelia is my eternity. We would find each other in every life or death, even as phantoms."

“I cannot rid you from my mind, Ophelia. It’s as if you’ve instilled an illness of your own into me. You are the sole thought that ravages my mind as I lie awake at night. The ceilings make me think of you. The forest. Roses. Breathing—I cannot take breath without you eroding my sanity.”

"I want my love to haunt you. Until the stars die--until all the water in the ocean dries and we're all that's left in theis cruel, dark world."

I really wanted to love this because I absolutely ADORED fabric of our souls, but unfortunately this just didn’t do it for me. The story was absolutely beautiful and so well written, but I found myself really struggling to connect with our main characters and the romance as a whole. I also am the type of person who really needs an intriguing plot alongside the romance and this book was very much so a love story, a beautifully tragic one at that. But for that reason it wasn’t for me personally but I can see why this book would be so so well loved by so many! The mental health rep was incredible and it truly was unlike anything I’ve ever read before!

“You are the butterfly. I am the moth” 😭😭😭

What an emotional read 😭😭 K.M. Moronova really writes the most unique stories. I am in love with this and The Fabric of Our Souls. ALL THE emotions I had while reading both of these!!

This one was tough because of the mental health. What an absolutely heartbreaking story.

“You were all u knew as I fell into the dark”

“I love you, until the stars die.”

I’ll NEVER forget this one!!!

Dedication For the weary darlings out in the world who seek hope.

Because, well, I’ve never seen how sad I truly look to others. When I look at myself in the mirror, I’m compelled to smile. It’s what we’re taught, isn't it? Smile. Look pretty. Smile. Even if it hurts, smile.

This is the book I needed after The Fabric of our Souls. This is a beautifully woven poetic story of redemption and love. The love for oneself, the love for another, the love of life and being. K. M. Moronova has a way of capturing the pain of mental health and using it to tell devastatingly hopeful stories. Her characters feel real. There were parts of the story where I was left wanting more, but that did not take away from my overall enjoyment while reading this; I just truly did not want it to end (I was not ready to say goodbye to Lanston 😭). Ophelia's story felt too close to home - it broke me and fixed me all at once.

To the Ophelias out there - you are a bright, beautiful butterfly in this world. Don't you dare let someone clip your wings.

May my sweet babies Lanston and Ophelia find a life full of love, solace and pure bliss in the afterlife. You are both butterflies 🫶🏻

🥀“Your light is contagious. Bright. I could find you in the depths of the underworld. Through mist and darkness. Through it all.”🥀

🥀Until the stars die. Until the ocean dries. 🥀

** Thank you K.M. Moronova for allowing me to read an early copy of this story**

"I've longed for a soul like yours. And here you've been all this time. Ophelia, even if we are stuck on this earth forever, I would find solace in knowing we are together."

This book had so many good one liners and was written beautifully but something about it just didn’t draw me in and captivate me in the way I wanted it to.

I struggled to connect with our main characters and the romance. While I heavily connected to the mental health aspect of this book I really struggled to connect with the other aspects of the story sadly. Saying that the overall story that this book gave to us was truly beautiful 🤍.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect when I started this book other than I knew there was a 10/10 chance that I was going to cry. And, yes, I was correct. This was a beautiful story filled with acceptance and love and how just because your mind is wired differently, doesn’t make you less than. I loved it. It was beautifully written and you could feel the emotion seeping from the pages. What a wonderful ending for a wonderful character.

Malo.
Nada está bien en este libro.
Yo amé el anterior (The fabric of our souls), y me puse contenta cuando salió este spin off
Me dió cringe. Ni hablar de las partes "intimas"

Lo mejor es que es corto.
Consejo: Si te gustó el primer libro, no leas este.

ugh i absolutely loved this book and i'm so glad. i wasn't sure going into it how i would like it since it's a paranormal dark romance and all of the characters are phantoms (ghosts), but i ate it up W it's a spin off to the fabric of our souls, which is one of my favorite dark romances so i already knew i'd love the writing but this book was so much different. this writing is hands down the most beautiful writing i've ever read. i needed to underline everything. i connected to this book and both main characters so much it hurt. i very surprisingly though didn't cry at all, which i thought i was going to sob the whole time. it was definitely sad but not as heartbreaking as i was expecting. i loved learning more about lanston and his past. he was my favorite in the first book and i had wished we got more from him, so i absolutely loved this book for that reason alone. ophelia was the most perfect character. i loved her so much from the second she was introduced. the both of them made the most beautiful couple and i was rooting for them the whole time, and their smut was most definitely smutting. my favorite tropes are enemies to lovers and slow burn and this was neither of that, i'm not actually sure what you'd call this trope but i loved it. their relationship and chemistry wasn't rushed at all but it also didn't take too long to blossom. it felt so realistic. i just loved this book. there were a couple scenes that i felt were unnecessary and i did guess the plot twist/ending in the very beginning, so that's why it's not a 5 star read but the writing itself is infinite stars. i highly recommend this book but make sure you read the fabric of our souls first. that book is even more incredible, i need to go reread it now

2.5 stars! ☆
⤿ no spoilers ﹒⟢

i definitely liked this one better than the last, but it still didn’t really work for me. the idea of two lost phantasms trying to find their way is kinda interesting, but the execution left me feeling detached. lanston and ophelia had a lot of potential, and while the emotional connection was more central this time, i still didn’t feel fully invested. they both have dark pasts, which is supposed to make their bond meaningful, but even though i could see their struggles, i just wasn’t drawn into their journey.

their relationship played a bigger role here, but it still didn’t hit for me. they’re brought together by shared pain, and while the story digs into their traumas, it didn’t make me care more about them as a couple. the emotional moments were there, but they didn’t hit like i wanted. i could see what the story was aiming for, but it just didn’t land.

there were a few things i did like, like the ending—it had that bittersweet vibe with some genuinely sad moments. but overall, the book just didn’t grab me. the returning characters, like jericho, yelina, and poppie, were fine, but i still didn’t feel any strong connection to them or the events happening around them. i wanted to care more, but i found myself just coasting through the story without much attachment.

maybe if i’d read this at a different time, i would’ve felt more connected, but honestly, i don’t think it would’ve changed much. it was better than the last book, but still not great. i wanted to like it more, but it just never fully clicked for me.

I love K. M. Moronova's writing! The little details she placed throughout this book and the depth she gives the characters is the reasons I fell in love with her writing in Fabric of Our Souls. You feel the passion she has for every detail she shares or the hardship of the characters.

I feel this book would have been better as a short story but I am glad Lanston got his own ending.

The Harlow Sanctum series has never been just books to me — this is personal.

When I read The Fabric of Our Souls back in January, I had no idea how much it would hurt… and heal me at the same time.
Usually, I read all the books in a series one after another if they’re available — but this time, I couldn’t.

Nine months later, here I am. I read A Ballad of Phantoms and Hope in two days and went through an entire box of tissues. I don’t regret a single moment (and no, I’m definitely not crying while writing this — it’s just allergies, okay?). Anyway, I was already sobbing from the dedication.

I have a whole list of quotes that mean the world to me, and it’s unbelievably hard to put into words how beautiful this book is.
It’s probably not for everyone — honestly, if this series doesn’t resonate with you, I’m actually glad for you. Because some parts hit far too close to home, and that’s not easy to process.

This isn’t just a book. It’s a journey.
A unique, heartwarming, and achingly beautiful emotional journey.
And I’m so grateful to K. M. Moronova for writing this series — because it truly feels like a ray of hope in the middle of darkness.

I was excited for this story because I loved Lanston in the first book but I found myself unfortunately bored reading it and it wasn’t what I was expecting.

4.75⭐️ I saw a comparison to how Lanston and Ophelia were giving Tate and Violet from AHS without the extreme toxicness and I found that truly beautiful and accurate. Lost souls finding solace in each other. This duology really hit home for me. I hope the dead truly do get to cross over and find peace and closure after their endings on earth. ❤️‍🩹

“Of course it hurts… I think it always will. But most things that wound your heart like this are worth it. It only hurts because of how precious we hold them. I’m never alone, not really, because I know I will carry the weight of them with me forever.”

“We are all ruined in some way, bruised and scarred. But those are the parts I love most in others, so I want her to see mine too. Love isn’t conditional. The broken pieces of us should be where we start, not what we inevitably dig up after years of peeling back layers, only to be tired and skeptical.”

⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 Absolutely spellbound by A Ballad of Phantoms and Hope by @K.M.Moronova! 👻💔 This spin-off to The Fabric of Our Souls (seriously, READ THAT ONE FIRST!) dives into the emotional journeys of Lanston and Ophelia, two lost phantom souls. Their story is so heartwarming and poignant, exploring themes of hope and connection in the afterlife. Lanston's yearning for peace and Ophelia's guarded past had me completely invested. Moronova's writing is just beautiful! If you loved the first book, you NEED this one! Prepare for all the feels! 😭✨

And this book is another reason why KM is my favorite author ever 🥹🖤 I have never felt so connected to characters in a book before reading the fabric of our souls and now this book. This book was so beautifully written.

“𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒎𝒚 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒉𝒂𝒖𝒏𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖. 𝑼𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒔 𝒅𝒊𝒆—𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒍 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒄𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝒅𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒆’𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕’𝒔 𝒍𝒆𝒇𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒄𝒓𝒖𝒆𝒍, 𝒅𝒂𝒓𝒌 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅.”

“𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍𝒔 𝒂 𝒍𝒐𝒕 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒂 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚. 𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆, 𝒊𝒕 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒃𝒆 𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒆.”

The ending of the fabric of our souls had me mourning Lanston’s death and now I feel like I have to let him go and move on, just like he has 😭 I’m so glad he found his love story.

AND THE NAME LANNY?!?! That’s what made me cry. That’s what got me.

I devoured this book in 3.5 hours and highly recommend it!

arc review
i have never read a book as beautiful as this. I have never read a book that continuously shattered my heart whilst putting it back together. I have cried so many tears, i felt every emotion. This book was written to the weary souls that dwell on earth, the souls who are alive ,it was written for the souls who seek warmth within the cold of the earth.

This book is a beautiful tragedy, the poetic nature of the book holds you ,it grasps onto your mind and feeds you.

Please go into this book ,being mindful that it focuses on dark topics that can be harmful to many

The way I’m crying at staring at the walls during and after reading this. This book was so BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN! It broke my heart and repaired right after. I will forever be obsessed and in love with Lanston. I stayed up just for it and finished it in one sitting. The author captures everything so beautifully!

Definitely check your trigger warnings though.
Thank you K.m. Moronova for this beautiful masterpiece of a book! 🖤
