Destroy thy Neighbor! A gate to another dimension has burst open, and invincible monsters called Neighbors invade Earth. Osamu Mikumo may not be the best among the elite warriors who co-opt other-dimensional technology to fight back, but along with his Neighbor friend Yuma, he’ll do whatever it takes to defend life on Earth as we know it.

Should Border, Earth’s defense agency, admit a Neighbor into their ranks? Jin and Arashiyama Squad think so, and they clash against headquarters’ top agents to preserve Yuma’s right to enlist. After the brutal fight against his friends and peers, Jin makes an unimaginable sacrifice to put an end to the hostility and protect Yuma’s future at Border.

While the sheer number of named characters who all look vaguely similar is getting to be a problem, the plot of this series is really heating up. Jin's defense of Yuma (as one of the few who know his true history) is heroic, particularly when you consider that even if the Border HQ knew what was going on they wouldn't be likely to care. How much is because of his precognition and how much is because he's a nice guy remains to be seen, keeping him an interesting character rather than an omniscient and over-powered one. That said, we really do need to get back to the Osamu/Yuma story, as they've really fallen by the wayside for the supposed protagonists...

My Japanese friend very eagerly lent me the first 4 volumes of this manga, which she professed is her absolute favourite series, but I have been having some difficulty getting into it as much as she is. The premise is interesting, the characters are rather stereotypical but fun, but something is missing for me. Not quite sure if I will keep on with the rest of the series.

Time for another info dump! This time we get a crash course on how Border triggers work and the different types of triggers available.

However, this lesson on awesome tech is overlaid onto an awesome battle between Jin (S) + Arashiyama Squad (A5) and a mish-mash team (A1, A2, A3, and A7) sent by Commander Kido to capture Yuma's black trigger. This part only covers the Attacker and Gunner weapons; Sniper equipment gets explained later (and it's hilarious). Also, Jin's black trigger is so cool~!

Although, I gotta admit that it's a bit surreal to see Border fights because people get their arms and legs blown off or their head sliced in two. But they're fine because it's a trion body and not their actual body. (This is why I have trouble believing that death is real and permanent in other shows, like Game of Thrones.)

Jin made a lot of sacrifices. But I know it's worth it in the end. There are a lot of fighting scenes of course. I'm just sad because I've finished watching the last season of this anime "World Trigger". SO FRUSTRATING! 😭 I NEED TO CATCH UP ON THE MANGA. HAYYYY This is the first time I've gone crazy again over anime and manga like this. And the manga is also ongoing. Omg. What to do?!

Our story continues with Osamu and Yuma’s tale to becoming A-ranked agents for Border. In the midst of their training, their leader, Jim, disobeys several key rules and decides to step back and go down the ranks to have Yuma in Border. By the end of the volume, Enlistment Day was here and our heroes go through the initial steps of training in Border (thought Osamu is in B-Team while Yuma is in C-Team.

Review by D.H. : "I liked how much work the main characters did to be promoted to the next rank. My dad and my sister [would like this]."

I liked this volume even more! Exciting but not overly long fights, interesting aspects of intrigue, fights that have at least some elements of strategy. It made me smile!

It's a pretty good and interesting volume. Definitely keeps you pulled to it. It wasn't my favorite story wise so far though.

Most of this volume is the fight between several squads on a mission to steal Yuma’s black trigger. In the end, Jin fights most of them off with his black trigger. He then brokers a deal with Headquarters to make sure Yuma will be allowed to enlist as a border agent. The day finally arrives, and Yuma stuns all the new recruits and trainers with record times trials. Amatori impresses a trainer with her skills as a sniper.

The action scenes for the first half of this volume were a little confusing to follow, mostly because of the names of squad members getting mixed around in my head. There are character lists in the front of the volumes, and every so often a spotlight page on the squads, so that can help with some of the confusion. I thought it clever that the mangaka used side-by-side narration of training the new recruits on types of triggers and the battle sequences to show the triggers in action.

Sara's Rating: 9/10

World Trigger gets better and better with each volume. Contrasting the quieter moments of volume 3, this volume 4 is non stop action. author Ashihara makes great use of his cast of characters and brings them into play at interesting moments. There aren't any throw aways here - 20+ characters and they are all an intrinsic part of a big picture being built here. We haven't seen the neighbors attack in awhile and the subtle shift of human politics continue to intrigue. Right now, it's really about expanding on the characters and trion attributes/abilities.

Story: The battle to save the new recruits begins! The full range of Jin's black trigger will come into play as he battles to prevent Yuma's trigger from being stolen. Snipers, gunners, and attacks will all have their moments as Jin enlists the help of a rival division. To save his crew, Jin may have to give up the thing most important to him. But for someone who can see the future, that may be exactly what he wants to do. Meanwhile, the trio will have to hold their own during official border enlistment day.

Most of the book is non stop action - Jin's defender group's tactics used to describe the different type of trigger weapons/ammo. Ashihara creatively brings all the different types into play and makes smart use of the battles to both elucidate and thrill. At the heart, though, is Jin's rare black trigger and precog ability.

As Jin battles, the trio are getting mentoring from the Border A-class agents. Yuma and Chika still show hidden talent and Osamu still struggles. Of course, Osamu's greatest asset is his leadership skills but he won't come to recognize that yet. But it is fun watching Yuma take names as he destroys his competition at the enlistment battles. This volume ends just as the battles begin but clearly the next volume won't be about surprising abilities so much as players moving around on the big chessboard Ashihara has set up. Every time I think I know where this story will go, it subtly shifts by bringing in a character who changes everything.

Kudos to Viz for picking up this title. After four volumes, it's still going strong and keeping me completely hooked! Can't wait for volume 5!

Maybe deserving of a 5 based on how many strangled elephant noises I made while reading it. The flow wasn't great though, switching rather unconvincingly between the big fight and Shiori teaching about triggers. The interludes on triggers seemed forced and unnecessary, they didn't correlate very well with the fighting. The artist information pages on triggers were badly placed as well, it left me more confused. I definitely feel like there's been a turning point where watching the anime first has put me at a disadvantage because I've confused characters and untangling them while reading is sometimes more distracting than enjoyable. :) I feel the need to rewatch some episodes so I can firmly organize things. The first volumes were so exactly the same as the anime I'm left wondering if there were changes made to simplify the battle in the anime, or if it was just too many people being thrown at me so I couldn't keep track and I don't remember all the characters and what they did.

Yuma, Osamu and Chika begin to learn more about Border Triggers (and while Osamu is already an agent he even learns something new as well). In the meantime Jin and Arashiyama's team face off against elite forces that Kido sent in order to retrieve Yuma's Black Trigger.

This was an action filled volume and there are a couple twists that I didn't see coming that made it even more interesting and shocking as they unfolded. I can't wait to continue this great series and see what part everyone has to play down the line.

I received this advanced copy from VIZ Media through Edelweiss in exchange for my honest review.

This volume is awesome for action/fighting, although ti was a bit much with the info-dumps about the different types of abilities that people can have using magic trion (which should be familiar to anyone who has played a traditional RPG). At least for the, the number of side characters is getting to the breaking point, especially since the best way to tell everyone apart is hairstyles, and the creator is running out of different styles (the guy with black layered hair, not the guy with black spiky hair, etc.) I bet that these chapters looked awesome in the animated series.

The highlight of this volume was a massive action scene involving a bunch of new characters in different locations across the city. Felt it was paced and drawn pretty well and I enjoyed this volume the most of the first four.
