A forgotten past, a tormented present, and a future in jeopardy.
She’s been abducted from Earth, experimented on in the Grutex labs, and thrown into the path of not just one massive alien mate, but two. As a Filipina nurse living in America, she isn’t a stranger to adapting to unusual situations, but nothing could have prepared her for what’s to come.
He’s hidden behind a mask of humor his entire life, but the fierce little female who holds Brin at gunpoint the very first time they meet, and the haunted Grutex scientist, can see right through it and into the depths of his soul where he keeps his darkest secrets. He never wanted to find them, but now that he has, Brin will do everything he can to protect them.
He was supposed to oversee their care, but he wasn’t ever meant to feel anything for the human test subjects. Unlike the rest of his kind, Nuzal finds himself feeling sympathy and guilt over what’s being done within the labs on the Grutex ship, but he never in his wildest dreams expected to feel love.
Will her mates ever be free of their pasts, and will they be able to escape in time to save humanity from the monsters of the universe?
This is an MMF romance with dark tones that may contain triggers.
Born in the Sunshine State, Hayley and Amanda are cousins who have come together to write under the name Octavia Kore. Both share a love for reading, a passion for writing, and the inclination toward word vomiting when meeting new people. Ecstasy from the Deep (From the Depths Anthology version) was their very first published work. Hayley and Amanda are both stay-at-home-parents who squeeze in time to write when they aren’t being used as jungle gyms or snack dispensers. They are both inspired by their love for mythology, science fiction, and all things extraordinary. Amanda has an unhealthy obsession with house plants and Hayley can often be found gaming in their downtime.
Both authors are part of the LGBTQIA2S+ community and as such tend to write LGBTQIA2S+ characters.
Review (6/12/2022): This is book 2 of a series I began back in the blur that was 2020, specifically June, which I barely recall what happened. As a result, this book had to function as a standalone since I was not doubling back to reread. I think this did decently well at being an involved story that didn’t wholly rely on the prior book. It was a new MMF romance.
General info: this is an alien romance that involves abduction and threats of rape and forced impregnation so this does warrant some trigger warnings . Also, one of the heroes is a scientist who is implied to have been involved in prior abductions so if you don’t feel as if there is redemption for that I just skip out on the series.
Now into the characters:
Jun is my favorite character by far in the series. Normally, I don’t overly favor the heroines in alien romances but I guess Jun is just my literary cup of tea. She is so brave and unyielding to oppressive forces. Unlike many heroines in this genre, she might actually warrant using the word badass.
Brin is the first of our alien heroes. I much prefer romances from the point of view of men. Maybe I am a fan of how women write men but I digress, Brin is so funny and is sarcastic the right word? He’s protective and his devastating past with his shitty parents just gave him a depth of character. Wait… additional trigger warnings for his character including child abuse, emotional abuse / neglect and
Nuzal is a Grutex scientist who unexpectedly begins to be enmeshed in a mating bond with Jun and Brin. (Not sure if that’s the right way to phrase it.) To be honest, he unexpectedly grew on me and I want to know more about his mentor.
So that’s how I feel about this book and I hope I didn’t spoil too much about the plot. The situation everyone ends up in really does test the budding relationship between Jun, Brin & Nuzal.
I have to say, Jun is one of my favourite characters, especially in this series. She is so badass and unyielding, I love that she stays strong and doesn't fall apart easily.
Each books delves deeper into their history and slowly uncovers what it is that links Venium, Grutex and Humans together.
At first I struggled a bit since a part of the book is the same as the first story from a different POV butttt it quickly became more interesting since we followed things from Brin (who is so sassy and hilarious) and Jun (who defo knows how to handle brin - she is basassss) so they clash nicely (and fire fire 😏🌶) lolol anyways the rest of the plot is also really interesting and further evolving from where book 1 ended so that was really nice!
Furthermore we have a lot of new characters introduced (yay I love side characters) who all have interesting personalities (which introduces tensions and makes the story more exciting and unpredictable to follow 👏🏼) Andddd this also means we get a hint of the main character(s) of the next book 😏
I really liked this book especially the dialogue between this triad (their personalities, concerns etc went very well together) altho I would’ve loved to see some more pages on the forming of the bond between the two males 🥺 It kinda went from no trust —> to to love in 20 pages? And it was weird since I felt like Brin was kinda hesitant at first 🤔 butt oh well nothing else to complain about haha!
The book has some nice plot twists and since we go off planet we see some more world building too! 🙏🏼 I am definitely curious to read the next book 🙌🏼
Book 2 better then the first? Perhaps. In this one, we have a young lady who is a poc, and she loves her life on earth, but has a secret that she is keeping from everyone who she loves. Yes, there is still the baby/pregnant trope that comes into play, but it’s farther in, and I actually like how they handled one of their leads and how they communicated their—feelings on creating new life. It was handled so well, and when stuff went south in that way, I loved it. They let their character feel how they wanted and didn’t try to change them, deceive them, or pull a total different personality that would work better in their story. Not to mention, we meet a slew of new characters in this book, and things become juuust a tint grayer from the last book. Story was good, leads were all strong and interesting to read about, together and separate, and I can not wait to read more in this series.

Jun was a bad A nurse who was fiercely protective of Amanda and her family, and rather grumpy. Brin was sunshiny, traumatized, and brilliant. Nuzal was sweet but still violent when needed and working on deconstructing his entire existence. They made a pretty solid triad that came together under the worst of circumstances. Make no mistake, this is a DARK book, even though it has its sweet moments. They were all dealing with various levels of trauma from the pasts on top of the current horrors of their situations. But y’all know me, I like some darkness.
Spice: 3/5

Overall, I enjoyed this a lot. There were two specific things that I found disappointing and frustrating that I'll get into but for the most part, this had some fun characters, interesting plot, some fun sci fi stuff, some worldbuilding - a little bit of everything. Honestly, kind of a whirlwind when you think back on it, which makes sense given the timeline and how much they go through during that time period.
JUN! I was glad she was the obvious choice for the second book and pleased to get to know her better and find out what happened during all those interim times in Amanda's story. Jun's a tough cookie nurse from the Philippines who immigrated to the US. I liked the representation although I can't speak too much about how well done or accurate it may or may not be. It didn't immediately read like a stereotype with the details provided.
I liked her stubbornness that was consistent throughout the book and her ability to sass Brin. She was a good comparison character to Amanda, as well, since Jun was more in her head than Amanda had been and a lot more cautious every step of the way in her relationships with the aliens.
It took me a moment to realize Brin named his AI after Oshen's mom. Poor boy. Brin was a great character, that playful charm hiding the terrible trauma of childhood. I liked his dynamic with Jun a lot although it felt like his character got a little lost once Nuzal came into the picture. Like he wasn't as dynamic anymore. Still got some good quips in with Telisa, though! There was some communication conflict with Brin that I was mildly annoyed about but at least in the latter half of the book it wasn't him knowingly withholding information or keeping things bottled up to himself.
Jun is revealed to have to have chronic kidney disease and keeps at a secret from Amanda. For all the details they included, it sounds like the authors needed to do a bit more research on it, though. On one hand, Jun is taking several medications that lower blood pressure but she's taking three medications for the exact same thing. Jun says she's at stage four but will tell Amanda once "she got everything under control." I'm not sure how much of that is the character being in denial herself or selling herself false hope but there is no cure and there's no reversing damage done at stage four. Then she's turning around and eating sausage and bacon?? While saying she's made all the recommended diet changes? Ma'am, no.
Next we got NUZAL. I was apprehensive going in about how well his character would be handled. It'd be very easy to fail to redeem him appropriately but by the end, I felt like it was handled pretty decently. It's made clear from Nuzal's point of view that he's not inherently malicious, that he's mired in the extremely violent Grutex society with little outside possible influence, and takes every opportunity given to him to prove himself once he starts to understand the damage he's done. He also makes a pretty hefty sacrifice. It helps that he was level-headed, calm, patient, and gentle with the humans.
This book had it's share of side characters. I liked nearly all of them (except Brin's bio family, obvs) but Telisa deserves special mention. She's apparently the star of book four so that'll be fun to get to! Telisa is a black female senator working with the One World Council who gets involved in the alien stuff. I liked that given the horrible situation she ends up in, she takes the time to grieve and panic and flip out for a bit before she's teaming and scheming with Jun. From thereon out, she's something of a force to be reckoned with, albeit more of a fearless leader type and less of the ass-kicking type (that was more Jun's role).
Here's a Telisa gem:
“He might have called for backup,” Telisa said, her voice calm and collected as if she watched women murder giant aliens on a daily basis. “It’s all right,” she told the people huddled behind. “He’s dead. It’s okay.”
I'm super disappointed at the way two female side character deaths were handled. They were sudden, violent, unnecessary to the plot, and presented like a mystery that never gets resolved. I was kinda holding out hope that they weren't dead at all until the Epilogue. The main characters also act hella stupid directly after that and put themselves in danger, and then also decide to hook up for the first time within 24 hours of the deaths. Like really? Ugh.
Speaking of the hookup. The first time is uh, less than stellar. Like, to me as a reader. The characters enjoyed themselves. But I mean, it speaks for itself: "There was no foreplay, no teasing or preparation for his entry." There was also double (triple? technically?) penetration with little to no preparation. Big. Freaking. YIKES. The next spice scene was going better until it insisted on more barely prepared DP again. Why.
This devolved into a big rant that you can skip if you only wanted to know about the book, haha.
The thing that gets me so riled up about stuff like this (besides the obvious that I'm wincing envisioning the tearing that would be happening in reality no matter how much you write your characters in bliss) is that this is FICTION. You could easily explain this away IN THE STORY!! Give an in-universe reason for why this is working and not actually tearing her body in two. PLEASE. And it wouldn't be hard to do! Look, here's a few, right off the top of my head: * There's other sex positions available to three people, ya'll. Why is oral sex not sufficient here? Do these male aliens not have orifices as well? Like why is this triad sex limitd only to two dicks in the single female hoohah. Brin even mentions plus the history of triads so clearly this shouldn't be a problem here. * This is a totally novel thought to some authors apparently but - it works because they take the proper precautions in preparing. wow. amazing. whodda thunk it?? * Or - god forbid - they work their way up to it and not go straight for DP/TP of two giant alien dicks the very first time * Grutex or Venium dicks have the ability to deflate really small or flat or something so both fit * Maybe they find out that when a Grutex and Venium dick are both in play, they actually kind of "nock" into one another to create a single, mega alien dick that's bigger than an average dick but not as painfully terrifying as two separate godzilla dicks at once * Jun's means she's able to take two alien dicks because as the author, you're making up the rules and that's how this works * Jun actually takes really huge dildos on the regular so she's been unknowingly pre-gaming for this event - all it would take is her thinking to herself about her sex toy at home or wondering how they'd compare or blushing as she wonders if either of her mates would look like a toy she's used, etc. So many possibilities! * Jun's I personally don't like this one because HELL NO but hey, technically it's an option.
Do you see what I mean?????? Look, I'm proud of myself but also frustrated because now that I put 0.02 seconds into thought about it, I like some of these soooo much better and it'd be way cooler story-building wise, more fun, and more physically intimate.
Wow! Book 2 in this series didn't fail to disappoint! I didn't think I'd come to like the Grutex at all, but Nuzal really grew on me. All of the genetic stuff talked about by the scientists was really fascinating and had us come to an understanding about how all of this was happening. You'll have to read it to find out. Jun is a fierce female even though she's all of 4'11" lol! And I fell in love with Brin even before Jun did. I'll take him as my Venium book boyfriend of the week. The epilogue was the icing on the cake! This story was so amazing that I stayed up until almost 4 am reading! 5 super stars!
This book is now officially my favorite from this series! I loved Jun, Havacker, and Nuzal! This couple is so sweet and also one of the best parings I have seen in a mmf book and I loved them! I also loved seeing an h that was from a different cultural and country... so good! This book gave me so many surprises and I just hope that some of the characters we have seen or “lost” in this book come back. Can not wait for book 3!
This was a tasty read with adventure, and adrenaline inducing moments, I enjoyed the story very much. I just adore Nuzal and Brin. Jun is a sassy character that nicely fits them. Love this world and look forward to hearing more 😊
Fantastic story!!! This is book 2 and I loved it!!! Book has everything that I love to read. Kept me entranced from start to finish. Characters are amazing. Authors did amazing. Happy to know that there will be another book also. Definitely recommend this one!!!
I Give this Book a 3.5/5 Star Rating, Listing as 3.
HEA(?): Yes. Cliffhanger(?): No Relationship Type: MMF M/M(?): 2.5-3/5, while there is a relatively quick scene at the end, the MM part of MMF came off more ‘partnership between the guys’, even though they express their interest in their own thoughts. Pacing: Time wise, it is kinda immediate in relationship and does technically qualify as a insta, But the flow of the story makes it feel less insta which I appreciated and therefore the romance in the story does seem to be well paced. Heat: 3.5/5 Romance: 3.5/5 Drama: 3.5-4ish/5 Suspense: 3.5/5 Dark(?): No. Can be read as a Stand-alone(?): Yes.
It did take me a little bit in the beginning to get into the rhythm of the universe, but I remember the first book and it was pretty easy to get back into the zone of it. At the end I feel like some characters were forgotten like around the forest section, and it did to me feel a bit abrupt as well did the epilogue of the book. I’m hoping the storyline continues for the next character pairing. I did receive this book for free.
I think I liked this one a little more than the first, mostly because it introduced a whole new cast & the male leads felt a bit more rounded-out than the first two.
Jun is a nurse and when her friend Amanda brings home an alien who is wounded she helps him. Then she finds his alien friend skulking around the house and threatens him with her gun. More alien issues happen and capturing and torture ensue.
So you really need to read the first book, this one sorta overlaps events in that one, and then it continues the stories for all characters in the end. Well written and the characters were likeable.
Jun, Brin, and Nuzal romance story is one of those epic slow burns that when the characters allow themselves to get out of their own way, the romance and the Heat when they come together it's beyond the ceiling. The adventure in this book will definitely keep you turning the page see what happens next. I don't think anyone's going to like Brin's Draya (mom). HEA!
This book is full of action and romance. I really enjoy reading this Triad learn who they are while falling in love. The was written very well and had a great flow. I suggest reading the first book, before this one. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
Loved the first book this was as good or even better. The characters were well thought out and the problems they faced were very difficult but together they over came them and everything was good in the end
I enjoyed the book so much. I loved that the main character was Southeast Asian and her culture was represented. I especially loved the ending as I may or may not have cried but I definitely laughed.
It was a very good story I enjoyed the book very much it was hard fir me to put the book down. So far I have read yo of the book series & enjoyed them both will read the next one in the series
ok I’m in like 7% of the book but ...the things from the first are in my head yet , I’ll continue this baby ... because I’ll like this book , but I need some time for me to forget the informations from the first , if not the introduction in this one will be pretty repetitive...
So I started this book because I want some M/M action hahaha what can I do ? It’s my new thing now hahaha . I won’t lie the prologue is boring , more because I just read the former book and ...I already know everything that is happening , but ok because it is explaining some things like the relationship Brin has with his mother.
So Brin didn’t wanted a mate ? I didn’t knew this before ... interesting , and I know I like Jun hahah damn I liked her since the other book the girl has attitude!! I particularly liked her more than Amanda Oshen’s and Zar mate of the first book hahaha damn I liked more Oshen and Zar relationship between themselves hahaha ok no more spoilers of the first book.
Oh for gods sake ...can we skip all this introduction part ? I Normally really like introdutions and all but ...I ALREADY KNOW IT ...well not really but whatever
Lots of blurred lines between all Venium good and all Grutex evil.
This story overlaps book1 and we find out how Brin and Jun come together. Jun is as complex as her home country the Philippines. She brings her Afro/Asian ethnicity along with the Spanish colonial language to a strong cultural background. She is a force of nature that bowls over everyone from her mates Brin and Nuzal to Grutex scientist Erusha and Brin”s biological mother General Brega.
It was better than the first book, the writing was good and i had fun reading it, but still, i miss some details. At least we got some more world building (which was sooo needed)
semi-spoiler? : they guys again dont have any connection? like they are supposed to be mates too and are keep pushed to each other but not even share 1 kiss? She is clearly the center so why force them to be each others mates if its not a good fit
Like the first book, there is some surprising depth and plot. However, it felt like the 3x aspect of it was almost an afterthought. It almost felt unnecessary or like there were two separate stories that got meshed together. Loved the heroine.
I wish we could do half starsthis is like a 3.5-4. I liked this book a lot, but it wasn't a complete 5 star for me. I like the vulnerability in the MMC and i like that the FMC takes absolutely no shit from anyone.
Funny. Exciting. Heartwarming. I couldn't put it down. Looking forward to reading more from this author. I rooted for the romance between the characters.
4.5 stars What an amazing ride and I was really happy that Nuzal got some redemption. Brin has a silly outer shell; but it protects a scarred center. Jun is a tough woman and she helps Brin and Nuval realize that they can have a family. Wanted more M/M interaction between Brin and Nuzal.
