Sweet Monster Treats #7

Undercover Orc: A Sweet Monster Treats Standalone

Rate this book
She doesn't do anything spontaneous or wild... until a hot orc dares her to try something new.

Bailey

As head librarian in my small town, I take my job seriously. So when I hear a sound in the library's attic while I'm working late and alone, and then a big, green, muscular orc creeps up behind me, I smack him in the head with a stapler. After the theft of an ancient orc book on loan to the library, is it any wonder I'm skittish?

Katar explains he heard me scream and only wanted to help. He's... upset, and I guess I can't blame him.

He offers to help me discover who stole the book, and we track down one clue after another. But when he dares me to give in to my wild side, I start falling in love.

Katar

Being hit in the head with a stapler is an interesting way to meet my fated mate. That's who this prim and proper, incredibly gorgeous librarian is. I only came to town to discover who stole the ancient orc manuscript. Then I'll return to the orc kingdom forever. But the thought of leaving this curvy, delectable woman makes me want to snarl.

So I'm going to crack this case. I'm going to show Bailey how to let loose. And then I'm claiming her as my bride.

Undercover Orc is part of the Sweet Monster Treats shared world and is adjacent to Ava's Monsters, PI Series. It's a sweet and steamy standalone romance featuring a light mystery, plus a cinnamon roll orc with a creative... (cough), size difference, a prim librarian who sometimes does let loose, and plenty of humor and heat.

Mystery, danger and a hot green giant!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💙💜💚❤️🩷
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Chemistry: 🧪🧪🧪🧪
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘📔
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏
Character development: 🤓😋😀😘🥰
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Bailey - she basically grew up in the library, she had a bad home life and spent all her free time at the library in her small town when she was young. The Librarian, Helga was like a mother to her and a mentor as well. Bailey got her master's in library science in college and before Helga died a few years ago, she recommended Bailey to be her replacement. Six months ago, a very important and ancient Orc tome that was on loan from the Orc royal family was stolen from her library.

The Heroes: Katar - he is in the small town on an undercover assignment from the Orc Royal family to investigate the theft and bring the thief to justice. He plans on returning to the Orc kingdom after he finds the culprit and gets the book back. Katar hasn’t thought much about finding his fated mate, especially one like the small human librarian he finds when he gets to town.

The Story: One night when Bailey is alone in the library and it has been locked up for the evening, she hears someone moving around in the library attic and upper floors. She leaves the library and meets Katar in the parking lot. He investigates and finds that someone has broken in, messed up some things in the attic and in her office and has stolen her laptop. Katar knows immediately that Bailey is his mate.

This setup is fantastic—Bailey’s deep connection to the library gives her a strong emotional anchor, and the stolen tome adds an element of mystery that ties her fate to Katar's mission. I love how her past is interwoven with the story’s inciting incident; it immediately makes the stakes feel personal. Katar's arrival as an investigator, only to be thrown off balance by the revelation of his fated mate, creates great tension, both external and internal.

The break-in scene is a great catalyst for their first real interaction. Bailey’s vulnerability—having her laptop stolen, the one tool she likely relies on for organizing her work—adds to the pressure she’s feeling. Katar stepping into the role of protector while being shaken by the unexpected bond between them. That’s a delicious mix of conflict and chemistry.

Though there is one thing I just don’t get in paranormal and alien romance, when the characters have horns. The authors always have it that when the female touches the horns it turns the males on like it is an erogenous zone. But horns are made of keratin, like fingernails so in reality, they can’t feel a thing. It just bothers me for some reason.

This audiobook was narrated from multiple perspectives, done in dual narration by Aiden Snow and Heather Firth. Aiden is one of my favorite narrators. He has a deep, rich voice and sounds so sexy I could listen to him for days. He always does a fantastic job, and this time is no different. Heather also has a nice voice, and I like how expressive she is. The only thing that could have made this better was if it was done in duet narration.

⭐⭐⭐ 3 Stars – Too Hot to Handle... Literally. 🔥💀

Okay, I didn’t think I’d ever say this in my monster romance journey, but here we are: Under Cover Orc had... too much spicy time. I KNOW. I never thought those words would pass my lips either. But I felt like I needed a fire extinguisher and a GPS to find the actual plot at times.

Don’t get me wrong—I really liked the concept. Undercover orc? Yes, please. Secret missions? Sign me up. Orc with a heart of gold and a strong jawline that could crush coconuts? Sold. The bones of the story were great, and I was genuinely into the setup. But then came the... ahem... excessive intermissions. They didn’t feel organic or earned, and sometimes I felt like the characters were getting it on just because they made accidental eye contact. Like—ma’am, there’s danger afoot and y’all are over here trying to create steamier danger.

I legit found myself skipping pages—not out of scandalized modesty, but because I wanted to get back to the actual story! There were stakes! Intrigue! Plot with a capital P! And then BAM—detour into spicy territory that felt almost forced.

Still, I give it three stars because the premise was strong and I did enjoy the characters (especially the orc—he had that perfect mix of broody protector and "doesn’t quite get human customs" that I adore). I just wish the story had a better spice-to-plot ratio. Like… maybe a little less sizzle, a little more story soup.

Final thoughts: Great setup, likable orc, but I needed less boom-boom and more boom (explosions, plot twists, action... you know the drill).

Bailey's job as a librarian is very important to her but not until she meets Katar, a very handsome Orc, does she realize she wants more than her job. Katar was sent to find the ancient Orc book that was on loan to Bailey's library that was stolen. Since Bailey is his fated mate, he has two reasons to find that stolen ancient Orc book. As they work together to find out what happened to the book, emotions come up for Bailey that she's never felt before. Along with finding out the mystery behind the stolen book, they find love and a happily ever after. This is a sweet and steamy romance with some unexpected twists in solving the mystery of the stolen ancient Orc book.

💚 “You’re mine, Bailey, as much as I’m yours.”
~~~
Bailey is amazing! She’s sweet, kind, caring and so, so nice! And, as the head librarian in the town, she’s so dedicated to her work. Bailey might seem all prim and proper at first sight, but there’s a naughty side of her that just needs the right male to light the flames. Bailey is a really wonderful woman and I loved her so, so much!
And Katar is one incredible male! The huge, muscular and gorgeous orc is not only fiercely protective and strong, but he’s also incredibly respectful, patient, fun and irresistibly charming. And, as an undercover agent of the Orc King, he’s quite the badass, too. Even more, Katar is so, so naughty and has such a deliciously filthy and teasing mouth! Katar is absolutely magnificent and I couldn’t help but adore every single thing about him!
I absolutely loved everything that happened between Bailey and Katar! From the moment they met, their chemistry was off-the-charts and I loved every moment they spent together. Even more, they were an amazing team, working on solving a mystery together. I just loved those two! I loved their banters and teasings so, so much! And I absolutely loved every moment when Katar was helping Bailey discover her wilder side. And I loved that both gave as good as they got. Ah, quiet and prim librarians can be soooo naughty and I couldn’t get enough of all the passionate moments Bailey and Katar shared. They were absolutely perfect for each other and truly deserved to find happiness and love together.
In addition, the storyline was incredible! There’s a mystery to be solved and every new discovery will keep you guessing till the very end. With everything happening, I was glued to the pages excited to see how everything will be resolved.
Overall, Undercover Orc is a fun, suspenseful and naughty story and I absolutely loved every page of it!
Narrators: Heather Firth and Aiden Snow
I've been listening to this at work for the last couple of days, as anyone who knows me, knows I love a good romantic story. This was a sweet, steamy, monster romance with a little mystery thrown in. It was a great listen and as it came up on my audio I thought I'd give this author a try and I'm glad I did. Though word of warning if spice is not your thing I'd give this a miss.
The narrators were a dream, Heather Firth as the shy, repressed librarian Bailey, and Aiden Snow as the charming undercover orc Katar were absolutely perfect in their roles (and I have to admit I'm now slightly crushing on his voice).
After ancient orc book is stolen from the library she works at, Bailey is more than a little nervous to be working late. So when she hears a noise in the attic and investigates, she is surprised to find herself apologising to a handsome orc who she has hit on the head by accident with her trusty stapler after he comes to her aid hearing her scream. Offering to help her find out who stole the book Bailey finds herself being drawn to Katar, especially when he encourages her to embrace her wild side.
Katar is undercover from the orc kingdom on a mission to find the orc relic that has been stolen. What he is not expecting is to be hit in the head by a shy librarian wielding a stapler, who just also happens to be his fated mate. Determined not only to crack the case but to show Bailey how to let loose, can the handsome orc win her over to claim her as his bride.
I absolutely loved this and will definitely read more by this author, and seeing as I adored both the narrators I'll probably continue the books by audio. Highly recommend 😁
“Books can take you almost anywhere. They’re an adventure, an escape."
Bailey is a librarian with a security and theft problem... not a great situation to be in when she's providing a community safe haven as well as resource center.
Katar is an Orc on an undercover mission... but just how many secrets can you keep from the woman who draws you like a moth to a flame?
This done in one book has a whodunit that pulls the story together, but it is the characters that keep the pages turning as Bailey decides to take a journey of self discovery, and see who she could have been if she were less rigid and controlled.
In this story stereotypes come face to face with expectations and assumptions as Bailey takes an honest look at her life, and how her past as helped shape her present... and she deliberately tries to change her life in daring, creative and fun ways.
Sweet Monster Treats Book 7
Monster, PI adjacent (prequel?)
Trigger/Content warnings
Drug use mentioned
Issues with parents
Katar (mmc, orc)
Bailey (mfc, human)
Bailey inherited her house and job from the previous librarian, the woman who raised her after her horrid parents couldn't. Not long after Bailey took over the library, an important book on loan from the orc king gets stolen. Katar is sent in to find out what happened to the book. Finding a mate was unplanned. Can he keep her out of jail and find who's framing her?
Cute read. It's the book that comes before the first book of Monster, PI series. This is how that series got started. It also fits into this series well.
Undercover Orc is book 7 in the Sweet Monster Treats series. Even though it is book 7, it is a standalone with its own couple and the books in the series are written by different authors. This is a urban fantasy with a human and an orc and has a mystery that they solve together. The main characters are Bailey, human librarian, and Katar, Orc royalty and special forces of sort. This book is super cute and fun. I liked it. I almost feel like I would have enjoyed less of the smexy stuff because the characters were so cute together and I enjoyed them trying to figure out the mystery. The spicy stuff almost overshadowed that. The narration was good. I would recommend this book. 4.25 stars, rounding down to 4.
Katar and Bailey. Undercover Orc was sooooo good! It was steamy, yes, but that wasn't the best part. The best part was the mystery that kept you guessing to the end. The characters were all very likeable and meshed so well together. I do love a good fated mate story. Katar was so sweet and I have such a soft spot for librarians. The story was engaging and kept me reading passed my bedtime. The world building is impeccable. It's Ava Ross so I wouldn't expect anything else. I am absolutely looking forward to her new Monsters PI series! That is going to be so much fun.
I loved this new Sweet Monster Treats book and was happy for the introduction to Ava’s new series, Monsters, PI. I do believe that this was my first mystery-monster romance read. It’s something I didn’t realize I was missing until now! Katar & Bailey’s story is an insta love, fated mates, mystery romance... that is as sweet as it is steamy! We have a protective MMC orc with “touch her and die” vibes and a librarian FMC who decides it’s time to get out of her comfort zone. I highly recommend checking out this cozy monster mystery!!
Bailey has her dream job. After her step-in-mother/mentor passed she got to be head librarian. She enjoys it so much. She has the house her mentor left her too. But after losing the book the orcs sent to be protected but showed off to the human world things start going downhill.
Bashing Katar over the head one night with a stapler actually starts an interesting courtship for her. Katar is there to find out who took the book but one everything starts pointing to his mate he will use his orc identity to find the real theft.
I enjoyed the romance aspects of this book but I struggled not to cringe with a lot of the rest of it. The whole mystery aspect of the book was entirely ‘spoofy’ and filled with plot flaws and a complete lack of realism. The fmc was also of course made out to be a complete idiot with only the mmc able to see sensibly (particularly with regards to the books the fmc has been given, I am trying not to give spoilers). Also the dialogue was super clunky and unnatural, there was no flow to the dialogue and was just not how a conversation would ever go.
Katar & Bailey
I wanted so much to love this! The spice was pretty good and the story had potential, I just didn't care for the FMC much.
Bailey is a librarian, one that works in a library that had a valuable and ancient tome stolen from. Order is her middle name.
Katar is undercover from the Orc kingdom in search of the stolen tome and who the thief is.
Of course they realize they were attracted to each other quickly, that didn't bother me. And the criminal did surprise me. I felt something was missing.
I enjoyed reading this story. The chemistry between the main characters and the constant teasing that added heat to every scene, was amazing. Additionally, I appreciated the mystery aspect of the story, as the thief's identity was completely unexpected and kept me guessing until the end. I can't wait to read more from this author. I received this book as a Free ARC copy to read and I voluntarily leave this review.
Undercover Orc
Katar has been sent by the royal family of the Ork Kingdom to investigate and find the culprit and the missing ancient Orc Manuscript that has been stolen, while they gave it, on loan, to the library in town. Bailey is the librarian that was in charge at the time. A mixup caused Bailey to injure and bring Katar down with a metal stapler. Their story is filled with events fuelled by treachery, greed, fear, lust and love.
Undercover Orc by Ava Ross is a paranormal HEA romance set in the multi author Sweet Monster Treats universe. This book is definitely filled with steamy, “wild” scenes, but there is also a mystery to solve and some suspense as well. A highly enjoyable read! Bailey and Katar are wonderful characters, and Mozzie is just the icing on the cake.
Well, that was an interesting read. Being a super sleuth, I had an inkling who the culprit was. If you like mysteries, suspense, and action that just happens to have a sexy as sin undeniably hot orc, then this one is for you.
Full of creative, exciting, passionate encounters that would make anyone blush 😊
Bailey and Katar! Part mystery, part romance, part monster mating fun, this is a cute story full of lovable characters and also a questionable cop dude that's giving off severe Barney Fife vibes! Bailey had a decent life going on, kinda quiet, A little boring, then she meets Katar and that orc lights up her world in some pretty special ways. I'm looking forward to reading more in this series!
A fun steamy monster romance
I love Ava Ross. When I’m tired or down, I grab one of her books and it always puts a smile on my face. Better than calgon at helping me escape my stress. The love scenes are hot, the chemistry is off the charts, and the stolen book plot kept things moving forward at a nice pace. A truly enjoyable read!
Interesting idea but drawn out
The idea was different than the other Sweet Monster Treats which made it interesting but way drawn out. Felt like I was reading it to get to the end. I skipped scenes of intimacy since they didn’t necessarily add to the relationship. It had a Scooby Doo feel honestly. Also, didn’t follow any of the rules of the other Orc books.
