Doubting Abbey #2

From Paris with Love

Rate this book
Every girl dreams of hearing those four magical words Will you marry me? But no-one tells you what’s supposed to happen next…

Fun-loving Gemma Goodwin knows she should be revelling in her happy-ever-after. Except when her boyfriend Lord Edward popped the question, after a whirlwind romance, although she didn’t say no….she didn’t exactly say yes either!

A month-long cookery course in Paris could be just the place to make sure her heart and her head are on the same page… And however disenchanted with romance Gemma is feeling, the City of Love has plenty to keep her busy; the champagne is decadently quaffable, the croissants almost too delicious, and shopping is a national past-time! In fact, everything in Paris makes her want to say Je t’aime… Except Edward!

But whilst Paris might offer plenty of distractions from wedding planning – including her new friends, mysterious Joe and hot French rockstar Blade - there’s no reason she couldn’t just try one or two couture dresses is there? Just for fun…

After reading the first book, when I saw this one was free on amazon too, I was happy to read the second book in the story. I definitely found it not as exciting or entertaining as the first, but it was okay.

In this sequel to Doubting Abbey, Gemma and her boyfriend/fiance Edward are spending a month in Paris. Gemma will perfect her culinary skills in a French restaurant and Edward will write articles about the Parisian history. Sounds romantic, doesn’t it? Surely they have will the best month of their lives? Or maybe not?

I thoroughly enjoyed this sequel to Doubting Abbey. It was great to spend time with Gemma and Edward again – two characters that I loved from Sam’s first book.

From Paris With Love is one of these books that is not easily pushed into one specific genre. Although the romantic comedy element is the dominant one, it also displays features found in adventure books. The plot twists and turns were fantastic. In spite of it being easy to guess some of the story’s outcome, other parts completely took me by surprise. I really enjoyed Gemma’s “secret MI6 missions” – surely the next Bond girl has been cast :-).

This book can definitely not be taken too seriously, but this is also the beauty of it and makes reading it so much more fun. The author’s writing style is engaging, fresh and easy to follow. Her characters are not necessarily down-to-earth, but extremely likable.

I really hope that this is not the end for Gemma and Edward’s story. I’d love to read at least another sequel to Doubting Abbey/From Paris With Love. Its characters are so close to my heart now :-).

Gemma and Edward are back for their next hilarious adventure. Samantha Tonge pulled out all the stops for this one and it is larger than life. From “Paris with love” is the follow up book to “Doubting Abbey” where we first met Edward, as Gemma impersonated his Cousin Abbey to win a reality television show and feel in love. From “ Paris with love” can be read as a stand alone novel but I recommend you read “Doubting Abbey” because it was so much fun. Samantha Tonge brings Paris alive with all sights and sounds of the metro and Eiffel tower but adds her own unique je ne sais quoi to make the city truly come alive. I have to admit I now have a literary crush on Edward. He is such an amazing character who has really come into his own and proved himself to be a modern day Mr. Darcy. Gemma is just as bonkers as ever. Within minutes of getting off the plane from England, Gemma is embroiled in a intrigue of Emma Peel proportions. “From Paris with love” is a tour de force of a novel that with compel you to read from cover to cover in one sitting. I can not wait for Gemma and Edward’s next adventure. I highly recommend. Be warned, this book is so funny – you will laugh out loud and chances of falling in love with Edward are very high.

I loved book 1 from this author, Doubting Abbey, and loved this book equally as much.

We once again meet Abbey and Edward, still in love as much as they were in book 1. This time, however, they have left Edward's stately home behind, and are flying to Paris to learn cookery in a real French restaurant.

Almost immediately Abbey finds herself thrown into a world she could not have imagined. This world leads her down a troubled path, and eventually to a decision she may well regret.

I spent half of the book wondering exactly how the author was going to pull the story back to the way I wanted it to go. She kept it going right up to the end, and that made the book work as well as book 1 did.

I loved the recurring characters as much as I did before, and enjoyed meeting all the new characters the author introduced me to. Her ability to describe places in France, which I myself have visited, was so good I envisioned them in my mind as I read about them. Being in France at the same time as reading this book helped even more!

Once again a great story from an author who has quickly become a favourite of mine.

Great fun as Gemma and Edward return, this time in romantic Paris. Gemma has a job in a French restaurant, helping out in the kitchen. She's thrilled to finally have a chance to prove her cookery skills.

But it seems there's a nefarious plot against Kate and William, the royal couple, who will be in Paris in a matter of days. Gemma is asked to help the M16 spy on a likely suspect, the French actress Monique, who just might be the mastermind behind the plot. She teams up with Joe, an agent with M16, and begins her double life.

Her suspicion and distrust of Monique lead to a misunderstanding between Gemma and Edward, and as tensions build, they break up. Monique is only too happy to comfort Edward and tries to steal him away from Gemma. Enter Blade, the mysterious French glam-rock star who befriends Gemma, and quickly steals her heart...

Can Gemma figure out what's going on in time to save Kate and Wills? More importantly, can she overcome her attraction to sexy rock star Blade and find her way back to Edward, the man she really loves?

Samantha Tonge knows just what she’s doing when it comes to writes a romantic comedy. She develops her characters and plot with clever flair and leads the reader on a fun-filled journey through the story.

What to do with Gemma Goodwin, a somewhat indecisive 25-ish year old who’s not sure she really wants to settle down despite the man of her heart has proposed. Why not travel to Paris, work in historic Chez Dubois restaurant to improve her culinary skills and sort it all out without over complicating it? Ha! Easier said, then done.

Throw in a splash of intrigue by way of international spy, suspense and romance with a very cool rock star, and a few surprise twists (and shopping trips) for good measure. How clever! You won’t be disappointed with this fresh romance.

Blimey. There are not many books that give me such a headache when it comes to rating as this one. Usually I happily set for my rating but with this book I really don't know what I should do. It for sure took me by a big, fat surprise, the plot developed in totally different way that I expected after reading the blurb, and the cover misled me too. Was thinking, oh yeah, Paris, shop till you drop, but I got something totally different, which is not bad, oh no, I am the last to say that, but still I feel a little confused.

I was not aware that "From Paris with Love" is the second in the "Doubting Abbey" series and I learnt it gradually through the many hints and flashbacks in the story, but it can absolutely be read as a stand alone novel. Enough information are given for us to understand some of the relationships and some of the events in this book.

Gemma and Edward, still on the high from their win in the reality show, are on their way to Paris, where Gemma is going to polish her cooking skills and Edward his hosting skills in one of the Parisian restaurants. The things seem to complicate right at the beginning when Gemma realises that she's being followed. Then the actor Monique appears in the restaurant and the things complicate much more, as she's the reason for Gemma and Edward's break - up. You would think the things couldn't get more complicated (again!), but yes, they could, what with Gemma meeting a French heavy metal singer Blade and with her leading her double life...

For sure the characters in the story were very colourful, very vivid and they had a lot to say. They were really popping out of the pages and I could feel their warmth. Gemma was hilarious but in a positive way and her endless optimism left me feeling better inside. She knows her strong and weak sides. She was also very, very naive but her other virtues were a recompensation. She was also the biggest chatterbox ever, she could talk my ear off, no matter what she talked about. Also her internal dialogue was just hilarious. I wouldn't say she's a believable character, but she's for sure likeable and adorable girl.
Edward - perhaps I don't know him good enough but he reminded me a little of Mark Darcy from Bridget Jones, he was so uptight but while Mark Darcy was also witty, with a great dry sense of humour and charming, there was nothing of this in Edward. And excuse me, maybe I'm still in the previous century, but so ostentatiously parading with a new girlfriend, telling Gemma where they were, what they did, what they ate, behaving as if nothing happened - no, thank you.
There is also a bunch of other characters, centred around the restaurant where Gemma and Edward works, her working colleagues and restaurant's guests, with the very lovely (not) Monique on top. They add a lot of enjoyment to the book, although I'm not sure if I would be happy with someone calling me Pudding (was this about the wobbly parts???). They were all simply written, not the most memorable characters but nevertheless, they were a very colourful group of people.

The setting was like an extra character in this story. I have read many books set in Paris but Samantha has described this city with totally fresh eyes, added so much heart and warmth to her descriptions. Especially those of the Disneyland made me long to visit it finally - they were so colourful and felt so true, I would love to twirl in those cups too. While it often happened to me in the past that the books set in Paris felt more like tourist guides with their descriptions, here Miss Tonge has done a great job of writing about Paris in a way that's really refreshing.

The plot, although a little exaggerated, was original and it would make a great film, something like "American pie" maybe. The events took me by surprise, everything happened so fast and I had no idea what more is the story going to bring. It was full of unexpected twists and turns and hilarious situations.

But. While I really appreciate what the author did, the plot was too much for me. Yes, it was written in a light, funny, clever way but I absolutely couldn't warm to some of the actions/events/situations that took place. While I am really the first one to close my eyes and go with the magic of the story and accept the even most un - realistic plot, there were really many things that didn't ring true, were too pushy, too unbelievable.
I really don't want to write about the sub - plot that's so important to the story because I don't want to spoil the reading for you. As I have already mentioned, it was a little too exaggerated for me and while I of course know it is fiction, too much is also not good. It was an easy, light - hearted, funny read but it made me cringe with disbelief just too often for my liking. I couldn't stop thinking yeah, right, as if it would happen and to be honest, it spoiled the book a little for me. But other than that, Sam Tonge has proved that she can write brilliant, funny, original stories and I really can't wait to try her other books. The action was galloping and I found myself racing together with our characters through the pages.
I would recommend this book as an easy, full of heart and sun read to brighten your day.

Ahhh, Paris! The most romantic city in the world. Spending time with the loved one in the most romantic place on Earth.... What can you ask more?

After Doubting Abbey, which I loved, I was pleasantly surprised reading the sequel From Paris With Love. And this time, the author did it even better, I loved the sequel more.

This time, Gemma and Edward are in Paris, taking cooking classes and spending some time together. But suddenly, some Monique shows up and it seems that Edward is very impressed with her. She is so sophisticated, so well educated, she seems such a matching person for aristocratic Edward. And you know what are they saying: "Three is a crowd".

In the second book, Gemma became a person closer to my heart. She really evolves as a character. She might not be the bravest person in the world, or the smartest, but she is loyal, trusting friend you can always count on. She loves unconditionally, always ready for compromises as long as she is respected too. She has some moments, she daydreams a lot, but that makes her just more adorable.

And it wouldn't be "From Paris With Love" without some James Bond details. Gemma is asked to help MI6 agents preventing assassination of the Royal Couple while they are visiting Paris. She loves Kate and William and she is honored to help. Maybe becoming a Bond girl is her new career?

This story has it all! Paris, love, action! Perfect setup for a perfect read. Totally recommended!

My opinion: 4.5 / 5

One of the most interesting things happened with this title. I requested it on NetGalley without even knowing it was the follow-up to Doubting Abbey which I really enjoyed. I started reading it and had a deja vu with the characters so I went and looked up the author's name and realized this was the next step in the hilarious antics from Lord Edward and Gemma. I think of that story and the first thing that pops in my mind is the imitation of Titanic.

This story had some great Gemma antics as well. Her internal dialogue was hilarious as always. She also gets to further her adoration of Kate Middleton. Who knew I would ever have a reason to type that name? In From Paris with Love, Gemma is visiting Paris with Edward and he is still waiting for a response to his marriage proposal. She's also in Paris to enhance her cooking skills at a famous Parisian restaurant. Edward is working to increase his skills as a host. They have a bit of notoriety from the reality show they both participated in from Doubting Abbey. They introduce us to a host of Parisian characters that really enhance the enjoyment of this book. There is a side story that just makes things more fun and gives From Paris with Love its adventure and fun. I do not know if there will be more books in this series but, I can say that I will definitely read them if there are more.

Oh I do love a story that is set in Paris, just the location, beauty and atmosphere of the place.

It was great to be reaquainted with characters Gemma and Edward, as well as Lady C who sneaks in half way through the story.  Don't know who Lady C is, then I suggest you read Doubting Abbey which is the book that comes before this one.

I absolutely loved the storyline to this book, so very well written.  There was drama galore, grasps, laugh out loud moments, shocking relevations, sweet moments, surely not moments, yummy sounding food moments (there was a fair few of them), James Bond antics, a unique French Rockstar, and so very much more.

As for the character of Blade, well I never......., so did not expect that little clever twist, I so did not figure that one out. That made the story go from 4 stars to 5 stars in my opinion.

I literally didn't want the story to end.  I am so going to miss the characters of Gemma and Edward.

I good little book if you're just looking for a quick read to pass time. It's not very impressive and the character's use of the same 7 words gets annoying as anything. But it doesn't take long to read and if you're looking for some lighthearted silliness, this is it.

This isn't a book that I would normally read. However, I did enjoy the book. Gemma and her prince have a whirlwind romance and when the question is popped, she is uncertain. There's just enough twists to keep the story interesting. This is a quick easy read.

Paris doesn’t turn out quite as Gemma expected. She’s barely arrived before she realises she’s being followed, and she spends her first weekend fighting dirty instead of enjoying the delights of the city with Edward. But it’s not what it seems — she finds herself recruited by secret service agent Joe to investigate a plot that may result in the death of a pair of royal visitors. Of course, she can’t tell anyone, so her relationship with Edward becomes rather strained, especially when actress Monique comes along and seems to be a much more suitable match for him. Things get even more tangled when she meets Blade — he’s French and gorgeous and she’s besotted … but Joe refuses to believe he can be trusted and threatens to spoil everything. As Gemma gets to know her new colleagues in the restaurant she realises they are not all they seem, but she doesn’t think any of them could want to kill an heir to the British throne. And they aren’t the only people who are being misread so, although the bad guys get their come-uppance and everything works out for the good guys, that doesn’t mean that what Gemma — or you — thinks is going on is the whole story.

This is the second book in the Doubting Abbey series and, although I realised that pretty soon after starting, not having read the first wasn’t a problem. The earlier events explain the relationships between some of the characters and why Joe asks Gemma to become an unofficial MI6 agent, but enough backstory is given for it to make sense — although the first book sounds like it might be rather fun too.

This one is fun because of the scrapes into which Gemma gets herself, the interesting people who work in the restaurant and the sheer preposterousness of the plot. If you like your romance served up with a dose of realism, this is not the book for you because you’ll find yourself saying ‘Yea, right! Like that would really happen!’ every few chapters. But if you’re willing to accept the James Bond hokum, days and times off that would make anyone in the catering business sigh with longing and so on, then the story works like the Big Thunder Mountain ride at Disneyland Paris — lots of ups and downs, lots of twists and turns.

While I was willing to suspend disbelief in order to accept the plot, there were little things that niggled because they didn’t ring true or because they made me stop reading for a moment to question or check something. Most were not important (and some were undoubtedly the result of me being overly picky, which is why I don’t want to spoil your enjoyment by giving examples) but there were rather too many of them for me to get completely lost in the story. That was a real shame because there is a lot to like about this book, not least the descriptions of Paris.

It’s something of a cliché to say that the setting is a character in its own right — albeit a cliché that doesn’t usually get used when talking about holiday reads — but the byways of Montmartre and side streets off Blvd St Michel get as much attention as the tourist attractions and all are part of the story. Gemma’s voice is strong too. She is consistently optimistic and aware of her failings without ever seeming arrogant or overly self-pitying, and that comes across in her narrative. You therefore get a good sense of what she is like as a person and so are able to understand some of her decisions that seem odd to other characters.

Overall then, a lovely bit of summer fun … just send your inner pedant away with a large bottle of absinthe first.

Thank you to Sam for sending me a copy of this book for review. I loved it! This is the first of Sam’s books I have read and it will definitely not be the last. Although it is a follow on from the first you don’t feel lost if you pick this one up first as it starts the story as if it is brand new and introduces the characters all over again.

I was in Paris myself in February so I am still sad at the fact that I’m back in the UK and everything is still pretty fresh, making this book so much more enjoyable for me to read as I could picture everything the way I remember it. Things that Gemma and Edward saw there (the building, landmarks etc.) are things that I saw whilst I was there, so I could picture them perfectly and it made me want to get myself back to Paris asap! The way Sam has described the whole city is wonderful, you could picture yourself walking down the Parisian streets and every detail was real. My fiancé even proposed to me shortly before we went! Although unlike Gemma, I said yes straight away ha!

The whole concept of the story is genius and makes the book kind of cross over genres with the classic chic-lit, the rom com and the James Bond elements to it. I don’t want to say too much because I want everybody to read it and be as amazed, fascinated and giggly as I was, but you just don’t know what will happen next throughout the story, will Gemma marry Edward?, will she prove herself as an MI6 agent? See how could you even guess what goes on in this book?! Yes the book has some far-fetched parts to it, which doesn’t always work but it does in this book, it brings something different, new and intriguing to the novel. There is also a great little twist at the end.

I really liked Gemma, she was somebody that if she was real I could see myself being friends with. She never asked too much of anybody, was down to earth, real and so likeable, which helps you to get sucked into the story and like you are experiencing her life in Paris and all of its highs and lows with her. You just can’t help but take her side through everything. I also loved how so obviously British she was among the French and her struggles with the language made for a few giggles. I am definitely going to pick up Doubting Abbey as I’m not ready to leave Gemma’s world just yet!

Sam is such a talented author and if this book is anything to go by I am definitely going to keep my eye out for her other books! I would recommend this book to anybody that fancies a bit of love, fun, food, silliness and Paris! It is a perfect summer read.

I received a copy from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. From Paris with Love by Samantha Tonge captivated me from the start. The book was a humorous, romantic read with such engaging characters which I loved made reading it such a pleasure. This is my first time reading anything by this author and now I am looking forward to reading more from her.
Fun-loving Gemma Goodwin knows she should be ecstatic in her happy-ever-after. But when her boyfriend Lord Edward asked her to marry him, after a tumultuous romance, although she didn’t say no….she didn’t exactly say yes either!

A month-long cooking course in Paris could be just the place to help get her heart and her head in the right place…. However, disillusioned with romance Gemma may be feeling, the City of Love has plenty to keep her busy; the croissants almost too delectable, Disneyland and shopping which is a national past-time! Everything in Paris makes her want to enjoy their stay except Edward.
At least they are until Gemma is approached to be part of a secret mission. It’s part James Bond and part romantic comedy. There are some fantastic characters such as Joe, a MI6 agent and his associate John Smith. This helps her take her mind off the issues with Edward and a new way for Gemma to help the royal family stay safe. She is unofficially part of the security team and must keep in contact with Joe to try to discover if anyone is planning an attempt at harming them. There are several twists and turns which keep your attention.

Gemma enjoys working at the historic restaurant so much even if it is hard. She has made friends with Cindy and the other staff. She is going to miss them so much when she leaves at the end of the month. However, things are not going well for Edward and Gemma even though they bought work at Chez Dubois together, he moves out and has a new “friend” who Gemma feels is everything that she isn’t. A chance meeting at the restaurant with a rock star named Blade is just what she needs to enjoy Paris; he is everything that Edward is not.

Throw in a spatter of a ruse by way of international spying, suspense and romance with a very cool rock star, and a few surprise twists (and shopping trips) for good measure. This is a lovely story with great characters and if you’re looking for something light and amusing to read then this is what you need. I highly recommend it. The author did a great job describing Paris and of course the fabulous food.

When Gemma and Edward arrive in Paris they think this is going to be the most romantic month of their lives. Edward has asked Gemma to marry him, but she isn't ready yet. Hopefully being in Paris will change her mind. Gemma is there to work, she's helping in the kitchen of a restaurant to improve her cooking skills. Besides writing about an important event and his experiences in Paris Edward is also working there. He's the perfect host and the customers love him. Working together and exploring the romantic capital of France in their free time sounds like a perfect plan, but in reality things aren't too great between Gemma and Edward. There's mystery man Joe, who needs Gemma's help. And the cunning and gorgeous actress Monique is trying to come between the famous British couple. Even though she and Edward have got some major problems Gemma is making the best of her stay. She loves the kitchen, enjoys Disneyland and shopping and she quickly finds new friends. One of them is a handsome rock star named Blade. Could Gemma still be happy even though her life has changed so much in the city of love?
I already loved Doubting Abbey and I enjoyed From Paris With Love even more! Gemma is such a warm and tough main character. She can do everything when she puts her mind to it. She has her own plans and they always work out one way or another. She manages to save herself in every situation, no matter how awkward or dangerous they are. I loved the theme of From Paris With Love, it's a little bit mysterious, but with a lot of humor and romance. While reading this book there was a smile plastered on my face the entire time. I liked it a lot. And of course it also helps that this novel is set in Paris. I liked reading about my favorite city and wanted to go there immediately to make some new memories. I loved Edward and Gemma's very different views of the same city. There's also a new character in this book, the gorgeous and sweet Blade. Who doesn't want to read about a cute rock star who also has manners? From Paris With Love is such a perfect and romantic summer read!

I was absolutely enthralled with Doubting Abbey, the first installment of Gemma's story, and found From Paris with Love to be just as good! At the opening of the story, she and Edward are off to Paris for a month so that she may learn the art of French cookery and he may write articles about the city's rich history. We learn that Gemma has yet to accept Edward's proposal, not for lack of love, but her fear of settling down at such a young age. As Gemma's life always takes an interesting turn, she is recruited by an MI6 agent to suss out a potential plot to harm the royal family. To make things more complicated, she is not able not include Edward in this knowledge along with her secret activities, which leads to damage to their fledgling relationship. He then turns to the company of the sophisticated French actress, Monique, who Gemma fears would be a much better match for her sophisticated man.

As the plot wears on, misunderstandings abound and Gemma's doubts of the solidity of her relationship with Edward grow, culminating in her decision to end their relationship. She bravely soldiers on, nursing her broken heart, determined to improve her knowledge of French cookery AND save the royals. Her sleuthing skills lead her to Blade, a French heavy metal singer, whom she develops an instant chemistry with. Confused as ever, she does her best to bury her feelings and discovers a plot that no one expected involving none other than...Monique.

From Paris with Love is a hilarious adventure filled with excitement, intrigue and a highly enjoyable plot twist. The supporting cast of characters are dynamic, engaging and extremely lovable. I enjoyed every singled moment with them! The only difficulty that I experienced with From Paris with Love is that I finished reading it far too soon! I am crossing my fingers that we will get a front row seat to Gemma and Edward's nuptials in the future.

Gemma is back with her hysterical ways and this time she is bringing her own special brand of crazy to the city of love, Paris!

So every girl dreams of her perfect man proposing, they dream of their big white wedding, the perfect fairytale love story, but Gemma is not quite sure she is ready. From Paris With Love is a lovable, fast paced and truly a treat for us all.
Samantha Tongue brings you to the streets of Paris, and you can almost smell the croissants for yourself. With an abundance of fabulous characters that are full of life and laughter, you will not be disappointed with Gemma and Edward's next adventure. You can read From Paris With Love as a stand alone novel which I did, but I am now going to be buying the first book Doubting Abbey as I just want more of the delicious and charming story. Get lost in the streets in Paris, catch up with your favourite characters and see if the city of love brings Gemma the answers she seeks. Gemma and Edward have their problems and I love that they have so many obstacles to overcome, with the introduction of new characters like a rock star named Blade, the beautiful but dangerous actress Monique, Will Gemma and Edward find what they are looking for, or with will it be No Love From Paris

Put your oversized sunglasses on, take a seat in that gorgeous coffee shop and lose yourself in, From Love With Paris by Samantha Tonge.

It was lovely to catch up with Gemma and Edward again – although this time they’re in Paris, practising their cookery skills. At least they are until Gemma is approached to be part of a secret mission. It’s part spoof James Bond and part romantic comedy. There are some fantastic characters and a few twists and turns. Some of them you will be able to spot and then suddenly a big one hits you in the face. I’m not saying any more as I don’t want to spoil it.
Gemma’s arch nemesis is also well done. I loved the way that Samantha Tonge describes her through Gemma’s eyes. She’s everything she isn’t – elegant, intellectual, sophisticated and no wonder that Gemma dislikes her.
Gemma’s fantasies at the beginning of the chapter work quite well at first but after a while they do become rather predictable – a case of less is more in this case. The ending also pushes the reader to the bounds of plausibility. That aside though, it’s a lovely story with great characters and if you’re looking for something light and amusing to read on holiday then I can thoroughly recommend it. Oh and the descriptions of Paris and the food alone should make you buy it. So, superb setting, marvellous characters and a wacky plot – what more could you ask for in a rom-com?

After Doubting Abbey, which I loved also loved the sequel.

This time, Gemma and Edward are in Paris, taking cooking classes and spending some time together. But suddenly, some Monique shows up and it seems that Edward is very impressed with her. She is so sophisticated, so well educated, she seems such a matching person for Edward and you know what they saying: "Three is a crowd".

This is a great escape book, so much so, I'm going to read book one in the series, since I leapt into the middle.

Having found her passion for cooking, Gemma Goodwin takes a one month offer to work in a small restaurant in Paris. Her boyfriend, Lord Edward (whom she meets in book one) tags along, and will work as a waiter.

Their newly minted relationship is tested in The City of Light, when what should have been a romantic chapter in their lives, gets tested by four unexpected people: Monique, a gifted Parisian actress, Joe and John - MI6 agents, and Blade, heavy metal rock star extraordinaire.

Alongside these new additions in their lives, we also enjoy the quirky staff at the restaurant, trips to Disneyland Paris, rummaging through flea markets, and charging up and down the streets of Paris as Gemma and company attempt to foil a plot against the British Royal Family - Ms. Tonge does a fabulous job entertaining the reader. A great secondary benefit is that Ms. Tonge has done her research, and leaves the reader feeling as if they've traveled the circuitous streets of Paris.

A great read... now... on to book one.

I absolutely loved this book! It was so different, with the M16 plot running through it, but it really worked! I was in stitches the whole time. There's something inherently loveable about Gemma, that she either made me laugh, or made me worry for her. It's set in the most beautiful city in the world - Paris, and Gemma is perfecting the craft of creating fine food in a French restaurant alongside the delicious Lord Edward. Things don't go according to plan - Gemma has a few secrets what with her M16 mission and all. And who is this 'Moni' that Lord Edward seems infatuated with? My heart was in my mouth a lot of the time as I sped through all the twists and turns this book has to offer. It was fast-paced and fabulous, and truly a hilarious read. It's so hard not mention half the things I loved with fear of giving the plot away, but definitely read it! It's as clever as it is funny with a cast of well rounded characters!

We are back with the fabulous Gemma and her mad life. Gemma and her fiance Edward are Paris bound for a month to her their careers. Gemma gets to work in a fabulous cafe in the heart of Paris and learn form one of the best chef's to help her catering course. But as always for Gemma, nothing ever quite goes as planned.

This book follows on from Doubting Abby, in which Gemma helped win a reality show and won Edwards heart along the way. The characters are just as lovable as in the first book even though only Gemma and Edward really carry on forward. The story takes the reader on delightful tours of Paris and has us laughing out loud at all the misshapes Gemma gets into.

However i am slightly disappointed as this is not such a good stand alone book due to references of Applebridge Hall and the cooking school. Having said this, it is worth getting both books as this is such a funny read and the characters are so lovable and i don't think this is the last we will see of Gemma.

This was a lot of fun to read - but one to flag up as 'only read when willing to suspend all disbelief & just have some fun!' Be prepared for MI6 hijinx and a whole lot of improbable daftness that isn't going to stand up to any close scrutiny, but is pure entertainment gold all the same!

I've not read the first book, but it didn't seem to matter as plenty of background was given - but I'm going to go back and read it now as Gemma is a great character and I want to spend more time with her. She's amazin'! Took a bit of getting used to, if I'm completely honest, but I'm hooked now. She's 100% what made this one work for me, a very unique and compelling soul - and masses of fun to boot.

The Paris setting is fab, parfait even, and deliciously authentic.

A fast-paced, funny summer read that's bursting with heart. I'm looking forward to going back and reading Doubting Abbey :)

Good escape

A great romance continuing the adventures of Gemma and Edward as they travel to Paris so Gemma can learn some new culinary skills.
