I highly recommend this cookbook to anyone looking to get and stay healthy from the inside out!
Great cookbook! If you're looking for a healthy eating book with recipes, this is a good one. There are lots of healthy living tips, recipes, and beautiful photos and illustrations. I am reading the digital version right now, I can't wait to get my hands on the print version! I love this book :)
Yes it is beautiful and no it does not promote a diet EXPLICITLY. But take on some new glasses and take a step back. "Clean" food, demonised processed food... Besides, it is a shame that no one in the editing process realised that the tone is slightly arrogant, few women can actually identify without feeling inferior.
Beautiful images of beautiful food and a beautiful model founder. While I'm all for self-care and eating more fruits and vegetables, I'm very sensitive to restrictive mindsets about food. You will get a dose of "clean eating" and "detox" here as well as villainizing of sugar. I'm a baker and a chef and while I recognize the affects that sugar has on our bodies (insulin response etc), a cookie is not going to kill you or "give you wrinkles". Also, a truly mindful and aware eater is going to be spontaneous and free with food whether at home or at a restaurant. Lorna says to eat out "once or twice a week and definitely not all the time"...why is that? Yes, portions are huge and perhaps you don't know exactly what's in a dish, but a mindful eater is going to be able to navigate that situation without the back-on-the-wagon mindset like, "...Relax and enjoy your time with family and friends [at the restaurant] and then get right back to your healthy eating the very next day." This rings of diet-mentality even though the author is against dieting.
I'm just going to come right out and say it. I'm not the best cook. I am supremely jealous of anyone who can just take a bunch of random stuff out of their cabinets and make dinner with it without even consulting a recipe. I even get confused by recipes sometimes. For this reason, my husband does most of the more involved cooking in our house and I stick to simple things like baking chicken and boiling water. Thankfully, I'm mostly cooking for a two year old and she is perfectly happy with my macaroni and cheese.
(Which actually I make myself...she doesn't like boxed macaroni and will only eat the cheese sauce that I make from scratch.)
Anyway, as generally not good it at as I am, I do like to try. So when I was presented with the opportunity to receive and review a copy of Lorna Jane's new cookbook, NOURISH: A Fit Woman's Cookbook, I was really excited. Ever since I attended Fit Foodie a couple weeks ago, I've been much more open to expanding my horizons when it comes to cooking and eating delicious food.
I'm a big fan of what Lorna Jane stands for. The founder, Lorna Jane Clarkson, is a former fitness instructor who is best known for her line of women's athletic apparel and her LiveLoveNOURISH initiative that motivates women all over the world to adopt a healthy lifestyle. I love to inspire and to be inspired! And I know I just talked about clothes on here yesterday, but yeah. Her clothing line is SERIOUSLY cute. Especially her yoga stuff.
I liked this book right away. Not only does it showcase a great many recipes, organized by meals (even smoothies, tonics, snacks, and dips!), but it also includes some very helpful tips straight from the brain of Lorna Jane. For example: her eat less, more often philosophy, lists of her preferred "real foods", fruits and veggies broken down by the best season to enjoy them, and even suggestions on where to shop for fresh foods without breaking the bank. She even includes a variety of eating plans to get you started on the journey to healthier eating. As a print designer myself, I was also very impressed by the design of the book; well organized, graphically attractive, and with food photography that looks good enough to eat right off the page.
For me personally, there is only one real downside to this book: It seems that quite a few of the recipes – especially the dinner offerings – are rather time-intensive and/or not at all toddler-friendly, though they definitely sound delicious to me! Many nights I'm already struggling to throw dinner together for Betty when we get home and I don't really want to spend the limited amount of time we have together before bedtime in the kitchen hand-making quinoa pilaf for an hour from scratch and then she won't even eat it. That said, there are enough recipes to choose from– such as many of the snacks –that I can make ahead of time to grab on the go and she might actually like them too.
I decided to try out one of these snack recipes to go along with my review: Fruit Chips. As a newly minted lover of apples I knew that I could enjoy these and they would make a fun treat to pack in Betty's school lunch. Plus the preparation sounded about as easy as setting my oven and leaving them in there to bake for awhile, freeing me up for some fun with Play Doh in the other room. These chips are AWESOME! Crunchy like a potato chip, sweet and a little spicy all at once. I managed to stop myself before eating all of them because really they weren't supposed to be for me. This recipe was so easy and hands-off that I will probably be making it a couple times a week.
BONUS: My house smelled phenomenal for like an entire day after I made them.
Next on the agenda? DESSERT. Because...DESSERT. This cookbook has some really delicious dessert options, a few of which sounded pretty easy to make. Because it's 500 degrees outside right now I figured a cool treat would be best: Chocolate, Banana, & Almond Yoghurt Pops. NOM. My daughter ate that whole popsicle all by herself, proclaiming the whole time that it was "yummy in her tummy". After I put her to bed, I ended up making more because they were easy, fun, and we all want another one after dinner tonight.
I'm so excited to try out a few more of her recipes this weekend and highly recommend this book to anyone who is trying to get on the path of healthier eating!
Overall, I give this cookbook two big thumbs up! What I really liked about this cookbook was how accessible it was (at least for me!). One of the reasons I typically don’t buy cookbooks is because the recipes are complicated, with too many ingredients and steps. I liked that many of the recipes in Nourish used ingredients that I was familiar with and felt that I could make, even though I’m not a kitchen expert. The level of expertise needed for the recipes ranged from super, super basic to more advanced – I liked that some of the recipes were just good ideas of food combinations to try and others were more involved. I like having lots of different options and it’s nice to have those options all in one place!
I also liked that sprinkled between the many recipes (breakfast, smoothies, dinner, snacks, dessert, and more!), there were lots of healthy living tips – I love learning about little tips and tricks to be sneak in more veggies or be more active during the day, so I appreciated that!
I tried out her Green Smoothie I (Mild) and have to say – I loved it! I’ve never made a green smoothie before (they kind of scare me), so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to try out a recipe that sounded appealing (and not “too green“). It had spinach, a banana, a pear, an orange, a cucumber, and water in it and I really enjoyed it! And I have enough ingredients left over to try it again!
I recently got the chance to review a pre-release copy of Lorna Jane’s latest book, Nourish: The Fit Woman’s Cookbook. (I received a free copy of the eBook and a $50 Lorna Jane gift card for my honest opinions). I was somewhat familiar with Lorna Jane before, but have never tried the clothing and never really knew what the brand stood for. However, after reading through the cookbook and trying a few recipes, I look forward to following along – I was impressed!
The book starts out with Lorna Jane’s thoughts on health and wellness. I loved her balanced approach, focus on real foods, emphasis of fruits and vegetables, encouragement to stop the fad diets, and inclusion of topics such as exercise, digestion, and alkalinity. The layout and photography are gorgeous – even though it’s a cookbook, it’s a fun reading experience!
The book has loads of information – from eating plans to myth busters to talk about hydration (you know how I feel about hydration!). It includes 120 nourishing recipes, divided into Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks, Dinner, Desserts, Smoothies, and Elixirs. Almost all of them look delicious, and I will soon try more, but I got the chance to share the recipes for "Cleanse Elixir" and "Detox Soup" on my blog: http://www.thelyonsshare.org/2014/07/...
I received Nourish: The Fit Woman’s Cookbook by Lorna Jane Clarkson to review as part of the SweatPink Ambassador program. Lorna Jane is the founder of Lorna Jane Active Living, a super stylish fitness clothing line. Her approach to health involves an active lifestyle and well-rounded, healthy eating habits.
Nourish is not just a cookbook. It is a beautiful book with fantastic photos of healthy foods and inspirational moments. It is a book that will help you focus on good eating habits and break several healthy eating myths. It is a book that shows you don’t have to eat bland food to eat healthy food.
I will admit that Lorna Jane uses quite a few ingredients I don’t usually keep around, so not everything in practical for me. But every recipe is well put-together and will keep your active body fueled well with lots of real food. Despite my initial hesitations about the uncommon ingredients, I did find several recipes I was excited to try.
There are lots of wonderful recipes – dinners and lunches and desserts and snacks and even juices for all purposes! I also love the Lorna Jane includes information about super foods and her top healthy eating habits.
Recipe books can get tedious and overwhelming. Lorna Jane has created not only a "recipe" book, but a story. A beautiful story about food, and nourishing. She has done this with amazing photos, clear and easy details to the recipes, all while still inspiring us along the way through each page with her quotes on living a happy, healthy life. A very positive cook book if you would.
The smoothie section is amazing and each one is a must try. The back section of the book contains great pages of step by step ways to "prepare your self and body for change". Eating plans from "getting started", "energy", "cleanse".
The recipes take us to just eating basics and clean, while awaken our minds to get creative with food. Bravo to Lorna Jane and company for this. A must have book in my kitchen for sure and must have meals on our table.
NOURISH is not what you would expect when you think of a cookbook. Sure, there are recipes, but the objective in the book is to help you create a healthy lifestyle that is reasonable and delicious! As I went through the book, I was happy to see so many creative recipes with real ingredients, and no complicated preparation techniques.
I enjoyed the helpful tips and healthy habits discussed throughout the book. Often times, cookbooks are just that, full of recipes without clear explanations as to WHY we should be nourishing our body with certain foods. The meal planning, shopping lists "cook's notes" are resourceful and helpful for someone trying to eat healthier. The recipes themselves are not difficult to create but some of the ingredients may be difficult to find depending on where you are located. Overall, I found the content both helpful and delicious!
I absolutely LOVE Lorna Jane Clarkson's cookbook NOURISH! It's unlike any other cookbook I've seen. The images are beautiful, we get to see her smiling face throughout, even her puppy is in it! Who doesn't love puppies?!
Lorna Jane provides us with 127 pages of recipes, information about good nutrition, her philosophy for a healthy life, and more. I made two recipes from the book (the spinach hummus and the mixed berry chia yoghurt pops) and they're both SO good! What I like most about NOURISH is that it's not just a book of recipes. We get to read about Lorna Jane herself. She also provides us with information from what to buy at the store, to hydration, to creating your own garden!
I highly recommend NOURISH for anyone who loves healthy living and good, nutritious foods. Also anyone who loves inspirational quotes- there's a lot of those! 5 stars hands-down.
Nourish is so much more than a cookbook, it is a healthy living guide. Lorna Jane not only provides readers with spectacular photos for your eyes to feast on but also pages of inspiring quotes, meal plans, a guide for eating healthy while you're out and loads of educational information about eating real, whole food. Her entire philosophy is to nourish your body and free yourself from dieting.
I highly recommend this cookbook and am excited to share the recipes I have made from it and the knowledge that the pages contain. With over 120 recipes that include everything from exliers and smoothies to dinner and desserts; Nourish will become a go-to recipe guide and reference book for healthy living for me in the years to come.
I absolutely LOVED this cookbook! NOURISH is actually so much more than a cookbook, but more like a healthy living bible (with stunning photography). Lorna Jane totally knows her stuff, from nutrition to just being a happy active individual. Other than the 120 spectacular recipes for breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner and dessert; there are a myriad of other categories within the book. A few various discussions include; how to stop dieting, superfoods, where to shop, hydration, eating out made easy and many more healthy living tidbits. So far, I've made 2 recipes from the cookbook and both were fantastic. A must have cookbook, for sure!
I just got the cookbook and I love it! It's not a diet book and it's not just a cookbook, it's a lifestyle book. There is info on how to create healthy habits with your eating and active life. I'm enjoying all the tips as well as the recipes.
I've found that many cookbooks contain recipes I've seen elsewhere or have already made but this cookbook introduced me to a variety of new meal ideas.
I've made two recipes and they were both excellent. Definitely looking forward to creating more meals with the Lorna Jane Nourish Cookbook!
I received this cookbook free for a review. All opinions are my own.
I LOVE how Lorna Jane incorporates real food and real life wisdom into the pages with recipes as a beautiful compliment. Some ingredients are hard to find but you will fine if you don't mind hunting a little (and live near a larger city).
The beautiful pictures and inspiration are both fabulous additions. I have the ebook version but I'm sure the hardback is great quality!
This is a beautiful, colorful and informative cookbook with more than just recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Whether you are vegan or consume animal products, this book has something for everybody.
Bottom line it provides new ways to eat old favorites like omelettes, smoothies, fritters, and skewered shrimp as examples. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to understand how food will affect them and in search of healthy recipes that fuel the mind and body.
Lorna Jane knocked it out of the park with this one! Her Move. Nourish. Believe philosophy is exactly how I try to live my life, so this book was really a perfect fit for me. I love the seasonal produce guide in the beginning which is a great tool to help eat locally and in season. The recipes I have made so far were easy but tasted elegant and as if they were difficult to make. I would recommend Nourish to anyone looking to stop dieting and start living a healthy, happy, and balanced life.
This little gem is so much more than a cookbook. The photography is inspiring, and Lorna Jane devotes chapters to explaining how to make healthy decisions when it comes to eating: myth busters, where to shop, eating out, the lowdown on sugars and sweeteners and proper hydration. Of course, standard chapters include breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert – 120 total recipes, from frittatas to smoothies to yogurt pops.
I'm not a chef by any means; in fact, until June of 2014 I hadn't even tried strawberries! As someone who can't cook, I can happily say that even if you aren't skilled in the kitchen, this cookbook is for you! It has a ton of recipes varying from tonics and smoothies all the way to full meals and side options, and a lot of the recipes allow for wiggle room so you can really customize it to your own taste!
I just received this amazing cookbook and fell in LOVE with the vibrant pages, recipes, inpso + tips. It's MORE then just a cookbook. It's all about your MIND BODY and SOUL <3 I was away in Greece for 3 weeks, so I haven't had a chance to FULLY cook with it yet { since I need to do major grocery shopping } haha, but there are a few dinners and snacks I have my eyes on! Heres what I creared :) --> http://www.pieceofcait.com/nourish-th...
I really enjoy this cookbook. Everything I have made so far has been delicious, and I also enjoy all the extras Lorna Jane included, like what fruits and veggies are the best during each season and her tips for eating out. I love her philosophy, the photography, and that all the macro nutrients are included. I can't wait to make more of the recipes!
I absolutely love Lorna Jane's NOURISH Cookbook! It was a feast for the eyes as well as giving me new ideas for healthy recipes. Looking through all of the pictures made me want to hang out with Lorna Jane. She has her own inspirational quotes sprinkled throughout and they uplift and drive home her philosophy. Can't wait to get cooking!!
Not only is this a fabulous cookbook, but it's a resource for really changing the way you live and think about food. With it's beautiful photography and notes from Lorna, Nourish is an inspirational guide to feeling fabulous through the food you eat. I am so excited to try out her recipes because they're based on the simple principle: you'll only feel as good as the food you eat.
I am in love with this cookbook. The photography is gorgeous, and it really motivates me to be more conscious about what I'm consuming. LJ is a living testament to the fact that you are what you eat, meaning that if you give your body quality foods, you will look and feel amazing because of it! I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about healthy living.
This beautiful book is much more than a cookbook! Activewear founder Lorna Jane Clarkson has created this healthy living guide with delicious recipes to nourish your body and inspirational quotes to nourish your soul. You'll find recipes for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Desserts, and everything in between. I can't wait to start making some of these tasty dishes!
Lorna Jane's NOURISH cookbook is amazing! Not only are her recipes delicious and easy but she goes into great detail about her philosophy not only on food but on life. She really shows her passion for health and wellness and her passion to help others. I highly recommend this cookbook!
I loved everything about this cookbook! The photography was absolutely beautiful and I found Lorna Jane to be incredibly inspiring! The recipes that I tried were extremely easy to make and their outcome was delicious. I can't wait to try more!
This book had a lot of good educational advice re nutrition but I was disappointed by the lack of vegetarian main meals (lunch & dinner). Good book for those who eat meat and are learning to eat healthy food.
too many recipes in jars and little glass bottles for my liking. Nicely styled though. On her 20 Healthy Habits every woman should have #16 consider drinking chlorophyll. I consider that ridiculous...
