A political biography of one of the most respected supporters of the liberal left; He went through communism, later drifting into socialism. George Orwell, then using the pseudonym Eric Blair, applied his theoretical-political knowledge mainly in India, circulating still in England and Spain, where he wrote a significant part of its literary works. From his humble family background, he refers to his state of health, which was not famous. He's formed in Eton. Books were not a frequent leisure activity for the boys at the time. Nevertheless, he inherited socialist and liberal ideals that shaped his personality.
In Orwell's writing, he sought truth. Even his fiction has elements of the world around him, the wars and struggles he witnessed, the terrible nature of politics, and the appalling toll totalitarianism take on the human spirit. From the time he began to write at the age of twenty-four, Orwell longed to capture the struggles of "real" people, to live among the less fortunate, and to tell their stories. In his writing, Orwell said that he writes because there is some kind of lie that he has to expose, some fact to which he wants to draw attention. Orwell certainly does this in 1984, a novel fraught with a political purpose, meaning, and warning.

Fascinating dissection of Orwell's writings and influences. If at times it does feel like it is overly supportive of a particular perspective of Orwell as primarily a socialist, it does not attempt to conceal this, or do so without any evidence, but makes an impassioned appeal to the Orwell that stands up for social justice despite through his times being confronted with a number of indomitable oppositions.

Newsinger contempla, nesta obra, o trajeto político de Orwell e a flexibilidade das suas ideias ao longo do tempo e até mesmo dos lugares.
O conflito na Birmânia e as consequências projetadas pelo Império Britânico da época, as suas vivências em Londres, tão tenebrosas como aquelas vividas em Paris.
A Guerra Civil Espanhola, claro está, tem grande destaque nesta obra. Foi, nesta circunstância, que Orwell assumiu a posição de socialista revolucionário, servindo-se duma oposição firme ao estalinismo.
Existe muita polémica da esquerda à direita, b medida que uns se servem de obra do autor para descredibilizar a outra parte e vice-versa. Ainda hoje, esta onda se repete e gera sempre alguma discórdia junto daquele que pretendem discordar.
A contestação à atitude pacifista de Gandhi, a denúncia de elementos radicais do comunismo, são outras matérias que podemos analisar nesta obra que se distancia do tempo do autor e que, desta feita, se tenta aproximar de uma razão imparcial.
Bom complemento para quem for fã do autor.
