She forgot she loved him.
He would die to make her remember.

Meg Foxcroft has never minded the tattling village gossip or her uncle’s ill-tempered rebukes. After all, she has Tom McGwen—and one day, they will build their own cottage, paint it red, and live a wonderful life.

But then the unthinkable happens. Meg is attacked, her uncle’s apothecary shop goes up in flames, and when she wakes up in the arms of an eloquent lord, she remembers nothing. Not even her own name.

In a frantic race against time, Tom plunges into dangerous water, bent on sheltering Meg from harm and discovering who wants her dead. Even if she despises him. Even if it’s now the handsome lord she casts her smile upon.

As danger swells and truth comes crashing around them, Meg must confront the past and decide who she trusts—and loves—before the enemy makes the final strike.

The Red Cottage is set in 1818 in Cornwall, a Regency mystery with a Gothic feel. The story revolves around a young woman living with her uncle, an apothecary owner, whose home is set on fire and she is kidnapped, leaving her uncle dead. After a carriage accident and the trauma, she lost her memory. Taken in by a lord, she struggles to find herself. A young man, who loves her and she loved before the accident, finds her. The story moves along with him trying to help her remember her life while the lord falls for her too. This is a complicated story with twists, turns, surprises, secrets, and layers of mystery with someone leaving threatening note and trying to kill her. The question is why. Descriptive tale of intrigue.

This story has a lot happening. Meg has a tragic accident that leaves her with amnesia. She doesn’t remember Tom, the man she loves and her best friend. She wakes up in a strangers home who is a Lord with an ill daughter. There is a little bit of a love triangle with Tom and Lord Cunningham both vying for Meg. There is someone trying to kill Meg which has added danger. While Meg is trying to remember, she gets to know Tom again. This story changes povs a lot, back and forth between Meg and Tom. It was hard to keep track of things at times. There are some darker moments in this story as well. The villain part didn’t make sense all the way to me but was fine. Some romance and mystery. A little bit of Christian content as well. Overall, a good story.

I am going to be honest because I would want the same from a review about a book I hope to read. My words are not meant to hurt or bash but to critique for the good of potential reader and writer too. So please take it as such.

Here's my takeaway.

The story was intensely heavy and sometimes quite graphic where there was violence and death. The characters were quite broken, lost and confused and it fully came across. There wasn't much hope threaded through this. It is a very sad and angsty read. And I have nothing against heavy reads. They are needed in a world that can be just as heavy to provide hope. I just wished there was more hope in this story.

It is labeled as Christian fiction but God is barely in the story. He does not even have a presence stronger than tertiary characters. And the horribly dramatic painful way the lives of the characters were going provided ample room for Him to be a larger part of the story. He definitely needed to be a bigger fixture in a story marketed as Christian fiction. Some honorable handful mentions here and there truly do not qualify it as such.

There was also far far far too much descriptive talk of kisses, physical desire and people's (sometimes half naked) bodies for a clean read. This actually genuinely surprised me.

Also if the indecisive trope is not appealing to you, you might struggle with this as there is a love triangle.

What I liked about this book was that the atmosphere in scenes could be felt through the pages. It was probably one of the few things I enjoyed about the story.

I will finish by saying that if you decide to label a book as "Christian Fiction" please do put true Christian themes and mannerisms in the story. This book would have sung amazingly if they were truly present and would have been a 5 star read no doubt. If you have read a Lynn Austin Christian fiction book then you know the power that weaving God into a tale heavy with loss struggle and pain can carry in a story. I hope to see more of such from Christian authors and publishers. This book is by a Christian author and a Christian publisher so I have written my review based on that lense.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was my first book by Hannah Linder, but it definitely won’t be my last! I wasn’t expecting all the twists and turns this story would take, but wow, what a page turner.

Tom and Meg are deeply in love, planning a life together, and planning to marry, until tragedy strikes. After a brutal attack, Meg loses all memory of who she is or who she once loved. While she recovers, a kindhearted Lord takes her in, and as time passes, he begins to fall for her. Meg, caught in a fog of confusion, doesn’t know who to trust. Tom longs to bring her home, but she doesn’t remember him and instead feels drawn to the Lord who’s cared for her. As both men help her piece together her past, danger resurfaces, threatening not only her safety but also her heart. Can Tom help Meg remember their love before she falls for someone else?

This story is packed with romance, mystery, and suspense. It’s an emotional rollercoaster full of swoonworthy moments and heartfelt tension. The love triangle element felt natural and was handled beautifully, it added depth rather than distraction. Such a sweet, touching romance! I can’t wait to read more from Hannah Linder.

I rated this 4.5 stars, rounded to 5 stars.

Review of The Red Cottage by Hannah Linder

Step into the captivating world of Hannah Linder's The Red Cottage, a masterful blend of historical fiction, mystery, and a heartfelt second-chance romance. Meet Meg Foxcroft and Tom McGwen—whose love story is as enchanting as tumultuous. Their stolen nights beneath the stars paint a picture of hope and rebellion against the disapproval of Meg's uncle and the whispering gossip of their village. Their dream? To marry, build a charming red-painted cottage, and start anew.

But fate has other plans. As the story unfolds, their joy is shattered, plunging them into a whirlwind of emotion that will keep you hooked.

Meg and Tom's chemistry is undeniable—a huge highlight of this novel. Tom’s love feels genuine, passionate, and tender. Tom is,
utterly irresistible—who wouldn’t fall for him? I was deeply moved by Tom's unwavering devotion when Meg suffered amnesia.

Meg herself is a resilient and admirable heroine. Her determination to recover her memories and fighting spirit adds depth to her character. I wish she had remembered him and been faithful to him.

The amnesia trope introduces some complex dynamics, reminiscent of Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey, enriched with unexpected twists that kept me captivated until the very last page.

The mystery is cleverly crafted, full of suspense, with enough surprises to keep you guessing.

If you crave a novel filled with romance, intrigue, and drama, The Red Cottage is an absolute must-read that will keep you turning pages late into the night.

(thank you barbour publishing through netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review)

"I guess because ye were the thing."
"What thing?"
"That made me want to wake up in the morning."
"I made you happy."
"Aye."
"And you made me happy?"
"Aye."

‘Red Cottage’ is a thrilling mystery with a unique second-chance romance plot. Meg Foxcroft and Tom McGwen are in love. Stolen moments under the night sky and the sheer joy they feel when together fight off her uncle’s disapproval and the village’s gossip. Despite all this, they’ll get married, build a cottage and paint it red. Then it all falls apart.

Her uncle’s store is set on fire and when Tom rushes to his love, he finds a crime scene and Meg missing. With no body found, Tom is certain Meg is alive and will do anything in his power to find her. Meg, on the other hand, wakes up after the attack with no memory and finds comfort in the arms of the Lord who rescued her. Though Meg doesn’t remember him and no longer feels the love they once shared, Tom is determined to find those who want her dead.

My favourite parts were Tom’s faith arc and the romance. The ‘fall in love again and again’ audio that is currently trending right now is such a good representation of Meg’s feelings for Tom. The mystery can easily be solved in the first half of the book (especially if you’re an avid reader of mystery books) but the red herrings thrown about does make it interesting.

All in all, another amazing read from Hannah Linder.

Hannah Linder’s novels are full of rich and deep mystery that I am always intrigued and surprised with each time. The outcome is not predictable. The Red Cottage takes an innocent, youthful first love and wraps it in danger and amnesia while the mystery strangles it with lies and doubt.

Linder explores ways truths can be twisted in certain circumstances into lies and deceit, destroying goodness along the way. God can get lost in the shuffle. But God never disappoints or moves. He is there in the struggle and the solutions.

Bravo, Hannah!

The Red Cottage was such an interesting story! Hannah Linder is a wonderful writer, masterfully developing her characters and successfully building a mysterious plot.

It took me about 25% before I really started to get into it, as the book starts off a bit slowly, but once I was invested in the characters, I had a hard time putting the book down. I’d describe this story as Wuthering Heights meets The Vow (with some Charles Dickens vibes thrown in there).

Hannah does a really good job revealing Meg’s background via flashbacks and other characters’ anecdotes (since she doesn’t remember), which I thought was a clever and unique approach. I also thought the contrast between Tom and Lord Cunningham as love interests was really interesting — strength, courage and masculinity vs. weakness, fear and selfishness.

A moody, emotional read with a satisfying ending. 4 stars for me!

Content considerations: Attempted rape scenes, no spice (just kissing and tension), violence, murder, references to suicide, reference to prostitution

Age recommendation: adult

This was my first ARC read, and I enjoyed it a lot! Thank you to Net Galley, Barbour Publishing and Hannah Linder for this free ebook in exchange for my honest review.

About the book:
Meg Foxcroft dreams of a future with Tom McGwen, however, her life takes a dramatic turn when she is attacked and her uncle's apothecary shop mysteriously burns down. Meg wakes up with no memory, finding herself under the care of a handsome Lord. Tom is determined to uncover the truth, desperately trying to restore Meg's memory and discover who is targeting her for harm. The story becomes a tense race against time as the killer looms closer.

My thoughts:
The premise of this book intrigued me, and there were some very interesting elements, such as the vivid descriptions of the setting and the complex emotional conflicts between characters.
However, there were aspects that raised concerns for me. The romantic scenes were overly heated, with detailed kisses and physical desire between characters that made me uncomfortable. Additionally, the book is quite heavy and often features rather graphic scenes of violence, assault, and trauma. This made it a challenging read for me due to the explicit content.

While I appreciate stories that incorporate thrilling mysteries and detailed historical settings, this particular book was not my favorite due to these content issues.

3.7 stars (4/10 hearts). I really don't know how to react to this story. I've read all of Hannah Linder's other novels, and this one is so... unusual.

What I didn't love:
- The main characters. Meg—I don’t know, she felt very stereotypically "the tomboy girl" to me. Tom was a little more interesting... but I didn't appreciate their personalities, so brash and "I don't care what society says." That's just me, though, as a rule-follower, and not really an issue of the book.
- Tom & Meg's escapades. They spent so much time alone together with no chaperone, even swimming—most of which happened while Meg was engaged or nearly so—and I know her fiancé was okay with it, but... I don’t know, it bothered me. And everyone else objected, whether she was engaged or not, so why did they keep doing it?
- Historically speaking, too, I struggled to accept some things—not just Meg & Tom's constant escapades but even the lord just taking Meg in and announcing he was marrying her.
- There was also a lot of (somewhat detailed) kissing and Meg eyeing Tom... again, mostly while Meg was engaged or nearly so. The romance was very passionate, and I didn't care for the way Tom and Lord Cunningham were both very possessive of Meg, and both forced physical affection on her.
- I don't object to the violence, though I don't personally care for it much, but I did object to a rather gory description of a decomposing body. I did feel like there was less of a "shocker" aspect to the book than usual for Linder's books—.

What I loved:
- Joanie, who was a sweetheart. And Violet was pretty cute. Also, I really had a soft spot for Lord Cunningham. I know, I know, he had A LOT of issues. But I would so love to his redemption story.
- The mystery was totally baffling and the solution so unexpected. A lot of it didn't make sense to me (I felt like the wrap-up didn't explain things very clearly) but that's very likely me reading too fast.
- The amnesia trope 😉 and though she doesn't remember it, I appreciated that there was representation of a girl who was assaulted. I felt it wasn't super developed in a few key scenes, but overall I thought it was important to see a FMC in Christian fiction who has those scars.
- Although I wouldn't really categorize Hannah Linder's books as "clearly Christian," just because the christianity is very much in the background of the plot, somehow this one felt a lot more Christian than her other books? I thought there was more mentions of praying & God in general—and I appreciated that.

Overall... I don’t know. It left me feeling somewhat surprised, and somewhat disappointed, and yet felt like typical Hannah Linder writing, somehow.

This might be Hannah Linder’s best book yet! The cover is absolutely stunning and is my favorite of hers! 😍 This was such a unique story as with all of her books. She managed to take two trope that I don’t like…amnesia and a love triangle and make me enjoy it very much. Meg was a lovely character who went through a lot in her life. My heart broke her. I can’t imagine what it would be like to lose my memory. Tom wasn’t my favorite at first. I don’t usually like Scottish accents…I get confused or can’t understand what they’re saying. But that didn’t bother me at all in this book. He was a bit of a stalker at the beginning and possessive in some ways. I know I wouldn’t want some stranger that I don’t remember kissing me all of a sudden. But I did enjoy watching the two of them fall in love again. Their love story was sweet especially towards the end. I didn’t trust that lord from the beginning. He was odd and didn’t fit with Meg. I was confused for some of the book as things came together. I am a bit proud of myself that I did figure out the bad guy. What I did really love was the faith content. It was stronger than her other books and I really enjoyed it. I definitely recommend this one and can’t wait to read what Hannah Linder writes next!

The Red Cottage is the first book I've read by Hannah Linder, and I'll definitely be reading more. I'll preface my review by saying I typically don't enjoy mysteries, as they can often get a bit dark or heavy. In the Red Cottage, Hannah told a story with a mystery at the core, but it in a way that never felt overly dark, depressing, or heavy, which I appreciated. The romance was the main focus. The combination of the historical romance, mystery, and faith elements were balanced really well, and I enjoyed the faith journey of Tom throughout the story.

The main characters, Meg and Tom, were enjoyable. For me, Tom's accent was the highlight. His dialogue was giving Jamie Fraser from Outlander vibes; if you know, you know. Some Scottish accents in books can come across inauthentic and a bit cheesy, but I felt like it was really well done in this book. I would have liked a bit more British regency language...just a little for the other characters. I found myself rooting for Meg and Tom's romance throughout the book. For me, the potential "other" love interest, didn't quite hit right and was cringey, but I think that was done intentionally. The reader is able to see that he would not be a good fit for Meg, despite his kind words and actions. The other supporting characters, like Meade, Tom's sister, and Lady Violette were all very lovable and added great depth to the story.

With the mystery, I did highly suspect the character who ended up being the antagonist way earlier in the story than I would have liked, but I think enough other suspects were thrown in throughout the way to keep me a bit unsure. There was some confusion for me at the climax where the antagonist and Tom show up at the manor where Meg is being held, without any transition to them getting there. Other than that, the mystery was wrapped up neatly, and appreciate that Meg and her uncle have a nice moment at the end. The plot does move along quickly, and there really isn't any fluff keeping you in one place for long. At a few points things felt rushed, but it didn't negatively impact the story.

I have one major complaint about this story, and it's so minor, but it really bugged me the entire book! Every time something bad was about to happen to a character or they were in danger, their inner dialogue would always be expressed as "No". Sometimes with additional thoughts, but not always. I don't know if this is common in the author's other books or not, but I found it super repetitive and simplistic. I would have loved if the author described the characters' dread through their actions, facial expressions, or body language, versus always stating it through their thoughts. This aspect felt heavy handed, and made me enjoy the book just a bit less than I would have otherwise.

Overall, I really enjoyed The Red Cottage, and will definitely check out other books by Hannah Linder! I would give this book 4.5 stars.

A heartfelt thank you to @hannahlinderbooks @barbourbooks and @austenprose for this stunning #gifted book!

This captivating mystery intertwined with romance had me enthralled from the very first page. Meg and Tom share a sweet, poignant romance that blooms amidst chaos. After a shocking attack leaves Meg with amnesia, she finds herself in the care of a compassionate lord, grappling with her identity and the chilling truth that someone is still intent on taking her life.

The plot is filled with unexpected twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. The writing is exquisite, and the character development was outstanding. I was utterly captivated by the mystery surrounding Meg’s assailant; just when I thought I had it figured out, a jaw-dropping twist left me floored.

Meg’s resilience and admirable spirit make her a truly compelling heroine. Her determination to regain her memories and her fierce will to survive added depth to her character. Tom, equally determined, is dedicated to helping Meg reconnect with her uncle and rekindle their love. Their emotional struggle to remember each other is heartbreaking.

If you crave suspenseful twists and turns, this book is an absolute must-read for all mystery enthusiasts, especially those who appreciate the charm of the Regency era. Don’t miss out, this book is available now!

An ominous and suspenseful Regency romance, the story was not quite what I expected. The author does a fine job portraying the main characters’ emotions and inner turmoil. The powerful writing sweeps you into the dramatic tale and slowly unveils the secrets kept hidden by the characters. You can’t help but feel Meg’s confusion and sympathize with her dilemma at losing her memory of her former life and now being loved by two men who wish to marry her. In addition, she struggles to survive as someone is trying to kill her for something she knows nothing about. The surprising twists keeps you guessing as well as a bit confused at times. However, if I had realized the book contained so much passion and impropriety—although mild by today’s standards—I would not have chosen to read it to review since this type of on the page showing is not my preference. A story for lovers of historical mysteries, adventure, and romance. Poldark fans will enjoy the setting along the coast of Cornwall, in a small village holding secrets and lurking danger.

The author does a good job spinning a tale that held my attention from the beginning and kept me guessing up until the end. Unique characters whose lives intertwine create a web of intrigue, with a murderous element at work, making it hard to know who to trust. There are moments of peril and some violence, escalating towards the end, with some suspense. Some inspirational scenes are tucked in as characters wrestle with questions of faith in times of crisis.

I enjoyed the character of Tom McGwen and his loyal friendship to Meg. His backstory was heartbreaking, as slowly revealed, and yet he was still so kind and persistent in doing whatever he could to help Meg and others. It was hard to know how their story would turn out. I couldn't help but root for him.
Recommend for readers looking for a terrific tale with mystery, romance and a bit of faith.

Hannah Linder’s gothic stories are just getting better with each book.

This one had my attention from the start, with trying to find out who took Meg away from the fire scene, if the eloquent Lord is in fact sweet and eloquent or is there a more sinister man behind the front, and will Tom be able to win back Meg’s affections.

I adored Tom’s character. Scruffy outside but so much warmth hidden inside. His back story was also heart breaking.

I was totally kept in the dark about who was behind the attacks, even had a different suspect in mind, and never would have guessed who was behind everything. Loss and heartbreak can make people do some unreasonable things in the search for justice and healing.

A book to add to your TBR if you enjoy a gothic recency themed mystery.

The Red Cottage is perfect for readers who chase stories full of intriguing mystery, sweet romance, and beautiful gothic prose. This lovely story follows Meg and Tom from the beginning. When Meg loses her memory in a horrible, purposeful accident, she no longer remembers Tom or who wants to harm her family and why. As secrets and unknown friends move in and out of the picture, Meg must decide who she loves and trusts based on what she knows now— and who Tom tells her she once was. I loved the themes of trust, forgiveness, and loyalty throughout, as well as the history of Meg’s uncle( no spoilers here!) The fast paced scenes read like snapshots of the character’s POV, which were written poignantly and described lyrically. The plot twists at the end were extremely fun and unique! I highly recommend The Red Cottage. I have been a fan of Hannah Linder’s books from the beginning, and I hope you will pick up this atmospheric regency mystery! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I loved this story! It’s my first time reading from this author but it’d not be my last. Now I’d like to read everything she’s written. The story is a captivating one with danger lurking everywhere but not in a dark or frightening way. She, Meg, the main character, is not safe anywhere. But what are they/he/she after, you wonder. It gave me Catherine Cookson’s vibes.

This is a regency mystery, with unexpected revelations you don’t see coming, so complexed that it leaves you wondering all the time, especially trying to figure out who the culprit is. Twists and turns that wouldn’t let you put the book down, like:
“I am your uncle???!!! WHAT???!!! 😮

But wait, it’s also a Christian story with faith elements sprinkled throughout.
Wow, the surrendering of Tom!, how amazingly written it was! How credible and relatable of a “lost/prodigal son returning to the fold…
“I want to feel Ye again. I want to love Ye again. I want to be Yer son.”

And a romance story, too! The romance… (sigh) oh, my! How I felt for them. How heartbreaking was at times. Meg and Tom love for each other was beautiful. But everything shatters when the attack took place leaving Meg with amnesia. Though Tom’s love for Meg never wavered, no matter what was thrown his way, like a true hero should be. And Meg trying to find “her way” back to the life she lived. She knew the present and somewhat knew what she wanted for her future but the erased past was something she couldn’t grasp to move forward to her future, and our beloved Tom was there every step of the way.

‘The Red Cottage’ is the perfect title for this story ❤️

If you like Regency, Christian, mystery, and romance all weaved together in a story, this is the book for you.

And here are some quotes from the book I’d like to share…

“Sometimes, literature is to the spirit what food is to the flesh.”

“We sometimes forget what we do not wish to remember.”

“Perhaps we do not ever fully recover from our tragedies, but we certainly learn to bury them.”

“Hope is only the benevolent name we give our pain.”

“Find out what makes ye get out of bed in the morning. …whatever it is, keep it, then ye’ll be happy.”

I have recently discovered Hannah Linder and I love her books! I have read only a couple of them, but will continue until I read them all.

The Red Cottage was a combination of romance, suspense, lost memories and mystery that leaves you guessing the whole time.

It takes place in 1818 in North Cornwall, England where you are pulled into the setting and the intriguing story right from the beginning. Just when you think you know what’s going to happen, there is another twist. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.

I was provided with a pre-release copy and am providing an honest review of this great story.

"I want to protect ye."

"You presume too much--"

"I will protect ye."

Stepping closer to the sofa. Leaning forward. Hands on the back of the furniture as his eyes burrowed into hers with furious passion.

"And I will find out who did this to ye. And I will stop them. And I will help ye remember. And I will bring ye home. And I will build ye our cottage. And I will paint it red. And I will marry ye, Meg Foxcroft."

CUE ME: SWOONING

Once again, Hannah Linder has knocked it out of the park with her latest gothic, historical romantic suspense! She's got a firm place in my "auto-buy author" tier, and I want everyone who enjoys closed-door historical romance and mystery to give her a try. Her books are so compulsively readable, and feature such beautiful prose, lush atmosphere, and emotional character arcs. She's also the only author whose work is marketed as "Christian fiction" that I read because her novels don't discuss any specific religious doctrine, and they aren't moralistic. In this book, two main characters have left the faith entirely, and have reasons to distance themselves from the faith community.

The Red Cottage is the story of a small town English apothecary-in-training, Meg Foxcroft, and the gruff Scottish fisherman, Tom McGwen, who live in a village in Cornwall, and have been in love with each other since they were teenagers. Together they dream of building their own cottage, painting it red, and living a peaceful, quiet life as they grow their family, as soon as Tom is able to save enough money to support her.

Their dreams go up in smoke in a matter of minutes one night, when Meg is attacked in her uncle’s apothecary shop, and is pulled to safety just before the building goes up in flames. She awakens ensconced in a luxurious country manor, Penrose Abbey, home of the handsome and wealthy Lord Benedict Cunningham, with no memory of who she is, or where she came from. Once her identity is discovered, Tom arrives on the scene, determined to unmask the perpetrators of the crime, and help Meg recover all of her lost memories. When he finds himself vying with Lord Cunningham for Meg's affections, he realizes that he is in a race against the clock to solve the mystery before Meg gives her heart away to someone else.

What I loved:
🏡 Tom's Scottish accent, broad shoulders, loyalty, and devotion
🚪 Meg's fiercely independent spirit
🩺 Amnesia trope! (I'm such a sucker for a good amnesia story!)
❤️ Forgiving yourself is just as important as forgiving others
⌛Mental health rep
🌳British whodunit
🐈Meade, Violet, and Joanie. And Gyb and Pippins, the ginger kittens.
🏡 Falling in love while DIY home improvement-ing, Cornwall in 1818-style

This book is intense! We hit the ground running and really NEVER stop! The opening chapter is so intense 🤯🤯

This story was so unique! It’s a fast paced mystery regency thriller about a young couple in love and a second chance at being together. Meg Foxcroft and Tom McGwen have grown up together and have stolen innocent nightly moments. They are planning to marry which her uncle doesn’t approve of but, after a tragic fire they are thrust apart. The uncle is missing or dead and Tom searches everywhere to find Meg who also went missing. Meg wakes up with no memory and in the care of an unknown Lord.

Meg needs to decide who she trusts and loves. Tom must be patient and persistent in his love for Meg. The underlying story of trusting God was really beautiful. Meg is being hunted and Tom is desperate to find out who her pursuer is. I didn’t guess who did it so it was surprising how the ending unfolded!

Hands on the back of the furniture as his eyes burrowed into hers with furious passion.“And I will find out who did this to ye. And I will stop them. And I will help ye remember. And I will bring ye home. And I will build ye our cottage. And I will paint it red. And I will marry ye, Meg Foxcroft.”

How he could enrage her, then amuse her, then endanger her, then comfort her, all in the span of one heartbeat. He was complicated.

The kiss followed him like a whip lashing his soul and flesh to shreds.

He was mischief. He was outlandish grins and the playful side of a world that had turned strict and demanding.

Maybe ’twas only that the abbey had been dry when he left. She’d been dry. Like a flower starved for light, she’d shriveled—but when she sat across from him in the cottage, his sunrays had kissed her petals. Life had mingled with her blood again. All the unease dissipated.

The Red Cottage by Hannah Linder was the picture of perfection! Just recently published on November 1st, it managed to perfectly satisfy my craving for a sweet romance while still being a 'closed door' romance which means it contains no explicit content/scenes.

I love the cover, and the back of the book is just as gorgeous as the front. I always read the back of books and as soon as I saw the sentence 'She forgot she loved him. He'd die to make her remember.' fashionably written in bold, I knew I would adore this book.

And I did.

Meg Foxcroft is in love with Tom McGwen. Their dream is to someday build their own family while living in a red cottage.

Their dreams of becoming husband and wife are short-lived and are quickly shattered when Meg is attacked.

Rescued by a dashing lord, Meg has forgotten everything and everyone. Tom no longer holds a place in her heart. Despite this, his one want is to win Meg back and discover the mystery of Meg's assailant.

Meg is now confronted with the mysteries of her past and has to make the biggest decision of all and decide who her one true love truly is.

Trigger Warning- Sexual Assault, murder, arson, moderate violence.

Hannah Linder's The Red Cottage is a brilliant piece of gothic fiction, with just the right amount of romance threaded through a story filled with page-turning suspense. After a night of terror leaves Meg among strangers, unable to regain her memory, she is faced with reconstructing the pieces of her past as danger stalks her every step. With a handsome stranger caring for her every need, and another who claims to be an important part of her past, she struggles to uncover the secrets of her past before she can hope to begin a new life.

Ms. Linder's prose draws her readers into wonderfully atmospheric multi-layered story, with well-drawn characters that will captivate the readers' imaginations. Usually I am able to piece together the well-placed clues and figure out how all the layers of a story connect, but I was taken totally by surprise. The plot was expertly paced and kept me guessing til the very end.

I am always amazed at Hannah Linder's ability to create such wonderful characters and tragedies that must be unraveled to find the full story. One moment can upend a person's life. In The Red Cottage, Meg has that moment when she is attacked. Her injuries result in amnesia. Through many twists in the plot, I was wondering if the true culprit was to be discovered. One twist led to another to another to another.

Meg's previous relationship with Tom was forgotten from the attack. I constantly kept thinking her memory would return, then the plot twist would have me wondering if it wouldn't. If it didn't, would Meg develop a new, similar relationship or move on with someone else?

The Red Cottage is written in perfect Regency style. Meg, due to a traumatic incident, loses all her memory and finds herself at Penrose Abbey with Lord Cunningham and his sick daughter.

The story is very deep and involved, and the characters have many layers. There are lots of twists and turns throughout, which kept me guessing. The story is full of danger, deceit, lies, and secrets.

The romantic part of the story, because of Meg's memory loss, is heartbreaking. Meg & Tom faced one challenge after another. The ending wrapped everything up nicely. This is a book you will remember long after you turn the final page.

I received a complimentary copy from the author; a positive review is not required. All opinions are my own.

Review ↝ This was such a lovely surprise. I didn’t expect the level of gothic suspense and tenderness that existed between these pages. Linder’s story telling took hold and had me clamoring for answers. I had my suspicions and theories and I loved how the story unfolded.

I absolutely love the amnesia trope, especially in gothic romance, so I really enjoyed this one. I also love character driven stories and Meg and Tom were characters I couldn’t help but root for. I read this over the weekend and would definitely recommend it for someone needing a story that has relatable characters that face emotional turmoil but still manage to find bits of hope even in the dark.
