As expected from Amber Books, this is a suitably fine photo book, portraying winter in all her forms. It's a roughly A4-sized coffee table volume, where the bulk of the text is in the picture captions, allowing the photographic art to convey the snow, ice and endurance needed. We start with Asia, and it's not just those bathing Japanese macaques in the snow – the Bactrians in the Gobi desert get it, too. This is the time of the Chinese New Year – although heavily slapped wrists for pretending Lhasa is in China.
Europe is next, allowing us to see Venice's St Mark's with a dusting of snow, and that more annoying 'damn, I've been there, too!' guess-the-location game. And once we do the Americas north to south we get the unexpected details, such as Australia having places where four metres of snow a year is not extraordinary, and Morocco in the snow – yes, it's not just Kili that gets the white stuff when it's wintry. And, of course, heavily slapped wrists for mislabelling the Temple Mount.
Yes, this is a frothy book all told – forget the pictures of Kenyan animals, that have little relevance to any winter – even the snowiest climes can look pretty and tell us little in the finish other than that they're scenic and a bit chilly. But as a browse it's a wonder, and roughly 98% of the time the photo selection is marvellous. It gets you thinking about your luck (or lack thereof) as regards Gulf Streams, rain shadows and all that keeps our planet's weather so varied. And it proves that anything looks nicer in the snow – four-star pretty, in fact.
Winter, A Time of Snow, Ice, and Frost by Claudia Martin captures the captivating and awe-inspiring images of winter that many of us have come to associate with the word. Each of the continents are showcased and a parade of winter-themed visuals are presented in a stunning and captivating way. Each of the images have a short description to provide insight, information, and context to the image being displayed. The images captured are truly an anthology that creates a portable studio for all to enjoy. Perfect as a table top display, a gift for those who love to travel vicariously, or for those who just appreciate the celebration of beautiful pictures that capture the essence of the object, or in this case, the topic of winter. I received a complimentary from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.
Another wonderful collection of stunning photography from Amber Books, this time sharing the sights of Winter all across the globe and all that it entails!
It shows how different parts of the world celebrate the season of Winter, how it impacts the areas and it's wonderful to see how the seasonal changes. Through architecture, wlidlife and landscapes, the photography beautifully captures the essence of Winter and I especially loved the wildlife and landscapes the most! The details are amazing and it's just one of those books you can find yourself looking at on a gloomy day, to inspire you to see the beauty in the world and the seasons.
This is an absolutely stunning book of some of the most impressive photos I have ever seen. I am in awe of this book.
There is one photo in particular that had me actually pause and stare at it. The Mutnovsky Volcano Snow Vaults in Kamchatka, Russia. It looks so surreal, like an oil painting.
Everyone will definitely love this entire book, from start to finish. And take time to read the captions for the photos, it's worth so much.
Thank you so much Amber Books Ltd. And thank you, Claudia Martin, for gifting this amazing book. I am definitely, most certainly, getting a copy for my own personal library.
My most favorite season, elucidated in all its glories, both Natural and human-designed! These photos are incredible, and photos and accompanying text explore the Season Continent by Continent, region by region, so that one may turn straight to the area one most wants to learn about or to visually "visit," or enjoy Winter all across the globe, in every aspect.
This is another fab travel photobook from Amber Books, this time all about Winter around the world. The book is split up into 8 chapters including an Introduction, Asia, Europe, North America, Central and South America, Oceania, Africa, and the Middle East, plus the all important picture credits! As to be expected from Amber Books, this was full of beautiful photos and short explanatory texts. Some of my favourite photos were from Japan, Mongolia, snow vaults in Russia, Christmas markets in Europe, snowy Venice, the northern lights in Norway and Alaska, penguins in Antarctica, glaciers in New Zealand and so much more! Definitely recommended if you’re interested in this particular season or you’re just a keen armchair traveller! Thanks to Amber Books and NetGalley for my digital copy
