I listened to the audiobook version of this.
Without spoiling anything (I hope), this is a war story set in the future.
The two sides warring against each other have commanding officers and their point of view is how we see the story. Every chapter alternates between the two, on one side is Mateo of the Alliance (voiced by Giancarlo Esposito, Breaking Bad, The Mandalorian), and the other is Richter of the Hegemony (voiced by Eric Dane, Euphoria).
The voice actors/narrators do such a great job at portraying their respective parts. The story is also great, being written by two former members of the military. You get a sense of what happens in combat. The scenes in my opinion are incredibly well written that I actually felt the action and emotions taking place.
One of my favorite books in the past few years. Definitely check out the audio version if you can which adds just that much more.

Hell's Horizon is a kind of collaboration that I wish would happen more often. The authors bring totally different energies to the opposing commanders and that really aids in the immersion. Despite the 3rd person perspective, there are times where this reads like the letters of commanding officers you mind find when looking into first person accounts of WWII.
Plus: Brazee does a great job of embedding Marine corps culture into this sci-fi world. So much fun to see that.
Minus: Sci-fi elements sort of take a back seat in the story. Not necessarily a negative since it's highly character driven. It would've been nice to dive just a bit more into the government and technologies of this universe.

Astonishingly readable about an endless and seemingly pointless conflict, as seem through the eyes of two opposed field commanders, in which a personal rivalry develops and which ultimately may destroy both.
I'm uneasy about military sf - I don't really do 'war' stories (well, except for mainly Napoleonic War naval books) despite the number in my eventually-get-round-to-read pile but this was well written - the two points of view presumably from the two authors alternating. I can't do more than suggest reading it.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I was quite emotionally involved with it. The descriptions of the emotions most soldiers surely have that run rampant during the stress of preparing for battle and being in a battle was eye-opening. This story showed some of the sides of men/women at war. I loved the creative license used on the weapons and the back and forth of the rivalry. I don’t want to give any spoilers so I will stop. This is a great book for a rainy day.

Truth Unspoken
The way these two writers switched from one side to the other, alternating views of the same battle, or preparatory work, is absolutely wonderful. As the story unfolded I could feel myself brawn in. Before the end I thought both leaders would die together, but the finale really was much better. To know that you have caused so much death and still continue is truth.
Please have a read and see reality of war for yourself.

I enjoyed the book, but without the context of who they were, why they were fighting and a frame of reference of where they were from, it was a bit difficult to get in the flow. Maybe I missed something. It was written well enough with a lot of action to keep me reading. Excellent characters and dialogue interaction. I think others will enjoy the book. There are thought provoking subjects that are developed that are worth examining.

November 14, 2020Science fiction novel written with points of view of a soldier from one side and a marine from the other side. It appears to be a pointless war with corrupt empires (well, maybe no emperors). But soldiers and marines and civilians die.

A tale of two warriors, enemies, and each trying to persevere in a war that makes no sense and under rules that make victory impossible. Obviously a View Nam analog! Well-written, though, and the lead characters are both strong and well-meaning men. An enjoyable read, whether you tastes favor military action or the psychology or wars.

Military fiction at its best
I don't mean just military sci-fi. This is worthy to stand alongside W.E.B. Griffin, James Webb, and Harold Coyle.
And it is very well written in terms of tension, characterization, and handling a complex battle without burying you as you try to keep up with the flow of events.

Almost too real
An account of the lives of front line combatants so intense you virtually smell,feel and taste the environment and the action. The emotions displayed are both bitter and loving. Hatred and anger block the sorrow within that those really do the fighting are truly more similar than different.

The further you get into this book the better it gets. This book was a combined effort where Johnathan Brazze wrote one character and Richard Fox wrote the other character. Both were good characters and the book was full of action. I do not know how they made this work but they did.

Fascinating and Riveting
Fascinating and Riveting. A great story of two honorable rival in the battlefield. I kept rooting for both officers and their men. Their inner turmoil and strategic thinking is great. I hope there is a sequel.

Fantastic
Wow what a great storyline totally enjoyed this book, hopefully there will be a follow up on Captain Alcazar and his marines. Totally loved it and is well worth the 5 stars

New author team with a very good book. Reminds me David Drake's writing style in the "Hammer's Slammers" series. Hard action packed military SF.

Epic military space drama. The author has a deep understanding of military tactics, political lore, and the enlisted language of chain of command. Usually when it gets that deep you miss out on the syfy because it’s buried so deep in military talk, I didn’t feel that here. I was pretty much engaged the whole story. I had the pleasure of listening to this on audible, which was an incredible experience. Read by Giancarlo Esposito and Eric Dane. Esposito had me laughing out loud with his animated character expressions. This is a good read
