Dead in the Water

Rate this book
Nick Moore and Terry Banner investigate sleaze and mayhem for "The Investigators"… a website that’s been at the top of the Internet heap for several years. But reader interest has been sliding, and they’re desperate for a new scoop, something lurid and attention-grabbing. Something that will grab their readers by the throat and refuse to let them go.

Thompson Lake, a tiny town in New York’s Adirondack Mountains, seems to fill the bill. Seventeen people have died there under mysterious circumstances — a situation no one wants to talk about.

For good reason.

Welcome to Thompson Lake, Moore & Banner. It’s a great place to visit… but you might not get out alive.

Open ending....

I probably would have given this book a five star rating if it hadn't ended so stupidly. According to the author she depends on what the readers want on when and what she might eventually write to finish the story. Sounds to me like she just couldn't come up with one. It should be pretty obvious that what readers want is a real ending to a story. Disappointed.

Great Mystery

I really enjoyed this novel. It is a complex mystery involving a small town by a lake. This lake hides many secrets and the land around it is haunted, with good reason. It has a sad and bloody past. Carol Davis is one of my favorite authors. I look forward to more from this series and the father/son team that "hunt" together. One of these stories is titled One Too Many. It is a book I read each Christmas, not your typical Christmas story but an amazing read with a tip of the hat toward a Twilight Zone episode.

I give this book five out of five stars for being a book you will pick up and freak out if you have to put it down, well defined characters, impeccable dialog, and tale that combines my favorite parts of investigation and the paranormal. The read was refreshingly good with characters making choices you were begging them not to make, and internal drama that overlapped with the ongoing action.

What I loved about this book:
1) The characters were engaging and full of things to love and hate. I liked how the ongoing action brought up thoughts and memories of the past within each character point of view. Each character presented was interesting and the more I learned the more I wanted to know about them.

2) Author Carol Davis has a gift for dialog. There was not a single line that rang as contrived or false. I was laughing along with the internal character thoughts, and chuckling at the banter between the main characters. Both added such a nice layer of authenticity to the relationships.

3) The pacing of the story was spot on. There were nice twists and unexpected revelations as the action progressed. Transitions were well timed, and the various point of views worked well.

This is the first book I’ve read by Davis, and I know I will seek out more of her work in the future. I hope she decides to write more books about the lives and investigations of Terry and Nick, I for sure would be eager to read them.

I really loved this story...

We have reporters going into a small town, with small town mentality. They just want to dig into what appears to be a series deaths declared accidental or suicide. But, our intrepid pair believe that there is connection and a possibly a serial killer at large. Besides, even if it doesn't pan out they can spin a good story! Right? Right! What they get is a B&B run by some very creepy people and a town where everyone is keeping their mouths shut.

Man can Carol Davis spin a good story. Culminating in a frigging rain storm in the woods at night... I found that I couldn't put the book down! This is on my top reads for the year...
