Big Easy Lagniappe

Four army buddies reunite in New Orleans for a rowdy weekend of fun.

After years of separation, a group of men gather to have fun and catch up on old times. The guys have a great time but time has a way of changing some. All is not as it seems and no one will leave New Orleans the same as they arrived.

I was kind of worried when I reached the half way point and very little had transpired. I mean, as expected, the guys were having a great time but I was beginning to question my need to read further. However, things suddenly took an interesting turn and I found myself reading faster. Smith takes his sweet time building up the story. Once there, oh my! Really packs a punch to the gut. Worth the quick read.

FYI: The oyster's at Acme Oyster House AND Drago's really are that good. Always a must when in New Orleans.

"Lagniappe" by Brian W. Smith

My Thoughts....

Wow, this is what did happen when four military friends [Nick, Derek, Carmelo and Hamilton] take a trip 'down memory lane'...a reunion to New Orleans. Yes, this will be two nights of fun but who would have ever thought that taking a trip down memory lane may not have been the best route to have gone on for these friends. What will happen when 'secrets' start to come out that will change their lives forever?

What is going on with Nick Drummond [his wife Gabrielle], Hamilton Porter and Nick, Derek Hanson and Carmelo Kingston [his wife Janet]....and how do these people all tie into each other?

Well, you will just have to pick up 'Lagniappe' and see for yourself how well this author presents it all to you in this twist of a read that will definitely give you a 'jaw-dropping ending! This is definitely one of those reads that will cause you to think about it long after the read. Would I recommend? YES!

I love short stories because you have to employ a certain type of skill to captivate the reader in a shorter period of time. You don't get the luxury of dragging the story out and delivering a lot of back story and you have to make the reader quickly care enough about the characters to stick with the story. This was my first story by Brian W. Smith and I am hooked because he is a master storyteller. I read Lagniappe in the car on a trip and I got on my kid's nerves because I kept exclaiming my excitement at the little shocks and surprises. Now I'm on to read pretty much everything he has ever written!

This book started off as a fast paced book and stay fast thru out the whole story, there was never a dull moment. All the characters where described perfectly. The ending was a total shocker. There really needs to be a part 2 to this book...I almost feel cheated...I get all up in the story and then it just ends with a boom...Literally. But nevertheless I intend to read more of Author Brian W. Smith's books, I'm hooked on his writing skills for sure.

1st read by Brian W. Smith. Believable characters & an attention-grabbing storyline kept the pages turning as these 4 fellas met up for a reunion in the Big Easy. Very good short read.

This was nice to read as a novelette. I got just the chunk of drama and juiciness that I needed. People should do this more often, instead of dragging on drama and sordidness into a full length novel. But it wasn't really particularly sordid per se. There were some twists in the plot, which was appreciated, and the dialogue was really good. Not the best in the world, but definitely 4 stars. Hearing a Black voice and a man's voice doing literature well was the best. I'll definitely read another by Smith.

With every book there is knowledge dropped. With the four friends living in the past, I must show the quote that BWS states:

Man O Man

Okay, I wasn't expecting the depth of this story because it was so short. The 4 man characters were well developed and the ending I didn't see coming. Exceptional!

Excellent read. Wish it could have been longer. Four buddies take a much needed vacation to NOLA. They soon find out things have changed since their younger days. Secrets are deeply hidden and some truths come a knocking at your door. Opinions of people are shattered and a life changes drastically. Very good read.

Smith spins a story of a all boys weekend in the ultimate party city, New Orleans. As the four friends, spend a weekend reminiscing, drinking and club hopping, secrets start to unfold. Even though this is a short story the character development builds and plot twist surprised this reader. Outstanding story that I would love to as a full length novel.

Short but very entertaining. Four friends get together after a decade to catch up and enjoy the busy city of New Orleans. They realize that people change and people are often not who you think they are. Brian W Smith has done it again with another jaw-dropping ending to a story that left me wanting more.

Something Extra

I enjoyed reading this novella about four male friends meeting for a weekend in New Orleans. It was great reading a story about males and from a male point of view. I will definitely read more from this author.
