An epidemic strikes. The pox hit women hardest, so females are rare. Healthy girls are worth a fortune. Most live in squalid basement harems. Jackie is the last free girl, chief of a gang of teen boys. To them, she’s the prize, infinitely desirable, the last woman on earth. Competition threatens to tear the crew apart. To make things worse, the boys are starting to think she’s crazy. Jackie is convinced that the same soul shines from the eyes of every infected person, slipping like a demon from one body to the next, stalking her. Is she losing her mind, or could an unseen enemy control the infected?
When rival gangs discover that their little band has one of the last surviving girls, Jackie must make a decision. Will she give herself up to save her crew, or take off alone through the streets?

I write YA and NA fiction! My first novel, Enhanced, launched in 2013. Enhanced is about a teen girl born into a eugenics program, where ruthless doctors breed people like livestock. Enhanced was nominated for the BTS Red Carpet Award, and the sequel, Sacrificed, is a BTS Red Carpet Award finalist.

In other news, I am finished with 'Bait' the first book in a new dystopian series about a sentient disease that targets females. Bait is available on Amazon and I'm finishing the sequel now.

I love to hear from my readers. Find me on Twitter @CAFarrell, or www.courtneyfarrell.com

Original Blog Post: eARC Review & Excerpt: Bait by Courtney Farrell

What honestly made me want to read Bait was Courtney Farrell's bio. She's a scientist, a biologist, to boot! That reassured me this novel would not only be well-researched but have a strong sense of realism accompanying it, especially with it talking about a possible apocalyptic future.

After reaching the end much too quickly, I decided I wanted to see this in movie form. I don't think there will be much editing or rewriting needed to do so, it's written that well. Says something when despite the rather massive book, it took me about half a day to get through it, and would have been much quicker if I didn't have other stuff to do. Fantastic would be a mild word.

Jackie is sixteen, yet she's no child. The pox has forced her to grow up and lead a group of boys, protect, them, feed them, guide them. It's only Joe, an elderly man, who helps her along the way. Otherwise, she provides for everyone or they all die.

It seems strange to Jackie that she doesn't get sick. Stranger still that she can look at people or animals and see who is infected or not. Worse yet, the pox seems to be chasing her, like preferred prey. Is there some sort of intelligence behind it? She seems to think so.

While holed up in their territory, she discovers one of her younger crew has an infected wound and is dying. She feels she has no choice but to risk finding him antibiotics and in doing so, stumbles on the biggest secret about the pox. And it's something that will affect all the lives of any living organisms left on earth.

Science is, as it often is, at the center of this plague on humanity. It's when morality is forgotten and sentient beings are just organisms roaming the earth that man's experimentation goes wild and becomes unconscionable. It's not science per se that's at fault. That's like saying guns or drugs kill while not acknowledging that there are people behind these weapons who just wield them more proficiently or inhumanely than others, causing more destruction. People without morals cause the pain.

But can man win in a war like this? Is the capacity and will to survive enough? Looking at real life, a good guess is yes. With Jackie, her back against the wall, she has no choice to fight or lose the only family she has left. I hope she has the strength in the next few installments to come as well!

Bait is a book I soooo don't regret reading and I'm very glad that Courtney Farrell has created such a story. What comes next for Jackie, Dakota, and Keenan is something I'm very much looking forward to.

Bait is a fast paced and nerve-racking dystopian story, I enjoyed that the main character was a girl, and the "problems" of growing up in a world full of boys/men, especially if you are a good looking teenager.
The background story is solid, the "pox", other groups, the city, etc. The author gave us a really detailed book, with Jackie a Heroine that sometimes felt like a obnoxious little brat, (if you talk to my mother she would say that I was just like that at that age) and a couple of boys that would do anything for her, and she's starting to realize that. The plot is full of twists and turns, suspense, tears and laughter.
This is a book about Female Power, and I like it! Can't wait for book #2

Bait follows the story of Jack and her crew of misfit boys in an apocalyptic dystopia in Colorado. The story provides tension at all the right times and strong characters who must handle difficult conditions (the book is set in cold weather) and one another in order to survive a pox that has spread throughout the world. Jack is one of very few people who can recognize the pox staring out of the eyes of a person or an animal, and so she is the logical leader of her crew, protecting them from becoming infected (which more or less turns people into zombies). Throughout the book Jack must make decisions to protect her crew from not only the pox but from other crews, while defending herself against the unthinkable: After all, the pox took out the women first, and with few women left in the world, men do have needs.

I loved the book. My initial impression was that it read like a series of short stories, but the longer the book went on (and this is a particularly long book of its genre), the more cohesive it felt. The book is exceptionally well-edited. It's hard for me not to pick up on errors of grammar or spelling from independent authors, and Bait impressed me with how well put-together the novel was. Spelling and grammar errors were undetectable or non-existent, which made the book a pleasure to read.

By rights, this should have been a five-star book, and as I finished, I debated: Do I give it three stars, four stars, or five stars? I decided that it would be dishonest to give the book three stars, and unfair to the author. Had it not been so well-edited, I might have. Ultimately I decided on four stars because of some frustration I felt in understanding the author's meaning throughout various points in the latter half of the book. Had I not struggled with particular words (please continue reading for more information), I would have given this book five stars. It is VERY worth the read.

The words "array" and "construct" as they apply to this novel confused me. Even as I finished, I never understood the way the author used the term "array." In the end I did gather the meaning of "construct" in the novel, but unless I'm mistaken, it was used for more than one meaning. The hard part about this is that because the definitions of these words as the author used them are so unusual, I found that I wanted a further explanation every time that I saw them in the book. This was off-putting to me as a reader, and it's something that I recommend the author avoid in future books. I'll address this in my author review, which I write as "book reviewer" on Hubpages.

Another serious drawback is that I had trouble creating a mental map of the space in which the characters lived. When in the city, loose and free, I had a general idea of space around the diner where the crew lived. In the latter half of the book, however, I struggled to establish where certain rooms, buildings, and even people were. The characters appeared to spend a lot of time outdoors considering the frigid temperatures, but unfortunately I'm just not sure!

All in all, this was an excellent book. I'm not sure how I feel about purchasing and reading the next book in this series, but my reasons why would contain spoilers and I think that other readers need to experience the book for themselves and determine whether or not they want to continue with the series.

I was gifted a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. Further reviews will be available on my blog and Hubpages.

For 5 years Jack has been responsible for keeping a growing ragtag group of boys safe. For 5 years Jack has worked hard at keeping the rest of the world from knowing the secret that Jack . . . is a girl. In this post-apocalyptic world a pox struck down a significant part of the population world-wide, but took a disproportionate number of females. Sixteen year old Jacqueline is one of the few remaining females and highly valuable. Can she continue to keep her crew fed and maintain her secret?

Farrell’s new adult dystopian novel, Bait, combines survival with teenage angst in such a way that it comes across naturally. She describes the environment so that the reader can easily picture it. The pace ebbs and flows with a rhythm that keeps the reader from losing interest. This book is well written and has plenty of plot twists, has some very likeable and not so likeable characters, and was hard to put down.

The story is told from Jackie’s point of view. Her strong character, as chief of the crew, is balanced with the struggles of her new found emotions as a young woman falling in love. She’s had to grow up without the guidance of her mother or other females. You can feel the genuine affection she has for all of her young crew in the way she mother’s them when needed and gives them orders them like soldiers to provide structure.

As the book unfolds most questions are answered. With this being the first book in The Nanobot Wars series I am hoping that the remaining questions will be revealed quickly in the second book. If those questions had been answered within this first book, Bait could have easily been a stand-alone book. Even so, I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the rest of the series.

The "pox" has struck and left very few survivors of the female persuasion

I love TEOTWAWKI scenarios, whether it be EMPs, biological warfare, zombies, other kinds of monsters - and the list goes on. And "Bait" was a super example of what I like best in this genre of books.

*Strong, fearless female protagonist
*Hunky romantic interest (in this case more than one - that happens when you're one of the last females on the planet)
*Scary, plausible (well, at least in a futuristic world) reasons for the dystopian future mankind has ended up with
*A well written and edited story that was exciting to read

I would not consider this to be a YA book even though there are young people in it. There are very few women left on earth and that causes many problems. There are hints of rape in the book (not too descriptive), there are teens with hormonal urges (some of them descriptively acted on), there are scenes of violence.

I do wish there had been a bit more world building. The story supposedly takes place in Colorado but you couldn't tell it by the descriptive passages in the story. They were pretty nondescript. I love Colorado and it would have been nice to recognize some landmarks in the prose.

I enjoyed the storyline and it felt believable and this author's style of writing will guarantee that I read more of her books in the future, especially the rest of this series.

I liked the younger boys in the story, especially Tito, and the feeling of family amongst this ragtag group of orphans and misfits.

Bait by Courtney Farrell was not quite what I expected. Honestly I accepted this book thinking that it will probably bomb, but I was so completely wrong.
Courtney Farrell is a gifted author! She draws you in, drags you along, and then you realize that you still have half the book left, and you are the one who feels lucky that you picked this book.
This book centers around Courtney, who is one of the last females left on the earth and her gang of boys, who are just trying to survive. Jackie is the Chief, and most of the boys ignore that she is a girl, until the day that she comes home, after stealing a car from the Zunos gang. Her clothes end up all wet and she has to change, and ends up changing into some of the stolen clothes which are in the car.
The stolen car seems to start a gang war.
That is one of their worries, the other worry is the Pox, the pox is alive and is infecting everything, The only safe meat was rats, and they are now infected. The food supply is running out, and Jackie is losing her footing as the Chief, and the older boys are ready to take over. Jackie is going to have to go on a roller coaster of emotions. She is going to have to make choices, that no one would like to make. She is also going to fall in love.
This book is a wonderful story and I look forward to reading part 2 of this story when it comes out.
I received a free copy of this book in return for my honest opinion.

In the beginning I thought this would be like every other 'Zombie' book I've read. Boy, was I wrong. It was very fresh and kept me interested, even during the parts I didn't completely enjoy. The 'Pox' had taken over much of Jackie's world. She did the best should could to hide that she was female from others. Not only did rape gangs roam the streets but the 'Pox' took out almost ALL the women on the planet. She had a pretty rough life, as did the boys she took care of but this was the least of their worries. The Pox has decided it wants Jackie, more than ANYTHING. Lets just say that the 'Pox' isn't your typical 'Zombie Virus', but you'll have to read the book to find out. In the words of River Song...

Bait was full of so many twists and turns, I couldn't put the book down. The ending made me add the second book to my 'to read' list. I was very impressed with the storyline but I didn't like how stereotypical Jackie was at times. Dont get me wrong, she was a FANTASTIC character but occasionally I just wanted to slap her in the face. I'm sure I would feel the same about most 16 year old girls though, hormones at that age are insane. That being said, I'm giving Bait 5/5 because I loved the story and the author has a great writing style. Bait should be on your list!

Bait started off very well, with plenty of action, just the way I like it. The concept of being one of the last women on Earth isn't a new one, but it was well done here . . . except that I don't really understand WHY women died off. There wasn't really a good explanation for it.

The story moved along at a great pace and I loved Jack's character. She's vulnerable, but still very tough, as a result of everything she's been through. Warning to readers, however, there is a semi-explicit scene in this book which kind of bumps it up to NA status. That being said, I have no issues with sex scenes in books if they are there for a reason and this was definitely part of the story.

While pieces of the story were a little confusing (never did figure out the layout for the end scenes), I devoured the entire book in one day, when I should have been working, which is always a good sign! I really hope there is a sequel, since I'd like to know what Jack does next.

Where to begin? First off I must say I LOVE LOVE this book. Warning, this is a cliffhanger as this is a first book, Which is not a bad thing. You won't be saying sheesh now I have to wait. It does have an ending. :) What I loved the most is the female character is a strong girl, not a simpering female. To me she is the backbone of the story. Everyone else, the males, follow her lead. After a pox decimates most of the females, Jackie leads her "family" and tries to save the world. You will come to love the characters and hate some. Okay, more than some. LOL But this is always a good thing as no one wants to love everyone. Also, there is a sex scene in the story but it tastefully done and works in the story arc. Be prepared to read very late and look at the clock and go - Oh no, where did the time go. I have to be up in 3 hours. And yes I did that. To me, this is better than Divergent and on par or a bit above Hunger Games. RUN, buy your copy and begin getting lost in Jackie's world. You may thank me later. :)

This book drew me in right away. The majority of the characters are children, their parents having been already lost to the an increasingly aware "virus" known as "the pox". Jackie, the chief of her gang, is one of extremely few females left on the planet. So not only does she have to grow up in a post-apocalyptic world which would be bad enough, but she also has to deal with the onslaught of puberty and everything that brings. She's beginning to find some of the older boys in her gang attractive and trying to cope with those feelings as well as outrun all the males from other gangs who would lock her up to be part of a harem. She's trying to keep her and her "children" alive but things keep getting in the way.

Bait has a lot of action, is well-written, and I can't wait to see how book 2 plays out!

Bait, can't wait for book #2

This story is about a young girl named Jacquelyn but goes by Jack, and her crew of young teenage boys surviving in a world gone bad. A strain of pox has killed or taken over most the women and men off the world. Mainly men and boys are left. Jack dresses and looks like a boy for protection and survival. Jack is the crew's chief. She does the hunting for food and missions for retrieval of goods needed to survive. Then things start getting really bad with the spread of the pox getting worse and worse and into more kinds of animals. Come to find out a team of scientists and Drs actually started the pox virus. And Jack must battle the pox on her own. Awesome book! I really can't wait for the next one. I got this book for free with the rate and review program. Thank you for the good read Courtney Farrell

WOW. I don't know exactly what to say about this book except that I LOVED IT! This had a unique twist on the dystopian/apocalyptic/pandemic genre which I thought was simply brilliant. The entire concept was new and original to me, and I read these sub-genres A LOT. I do not like to give away any kind of spoilers, so I won't say anymore except if you are a fan of any of these, pick this book up. Forewarned, it takes a bit to get to what the storyline is about, but all elements are necessary to know what is going on. It also has a New Adult romance story with it, so younger audiences need avoid for the mild sex scene. I cannot wait to read where the characters go from here!

I adore this genre of books! Dystopian nightmares, post-apocalyptic YA adventures, are some of my favorite books. Courtney Farrell really delivered with Bait! I started reading last night, and only put it down around one in the morning, because I couldn't keep my eyes open. The suspense carries you right to the past page! Bait is scary because it's scenarios are terrifyingly POSSIBLE! The story wraps up in the last pages, so that even though this is intended as the first book in a series, the 'smaller' struggles are all resolved. I truly enjoyed this book as much as Maze Runner and Divergent. I can't wait to see what new horrors await our heroes in book 2!

A dystopian story where women are an endangered species - "Bait" by Courtney Farrell follows a young teenager as she try's to survive in a "pox" world. It encompasses everything from adventure to romance and from horror to a feeling of unity. The author is also very good at bringing the characters to life and showing their humanity, wants and fears. But instead of 5 stars I'm giving it 4 as although we had a strong female protagonist, I found she was a bit stereotypical. But in saying that, I devoured this book and I can't wait to get the next one. I was genuinely frightened at times. Great read for 'zombie' and apocalypse fans. Ends with a cliffhanger that will make you want more!

Ahhh this book! I’d been wanting to read BAIT for a while before I received a review copy from the author. Grad school was the only thing keep me from reading it, but once I stopped, I couldn’t put it down! This is a true New Adult speculative fiction book. It’s got a rough, gritty feel, with a great voice an even greater premise. The book doesn’t pull any punches either; you’ve got about a page and a half to catch your breath before things really take off and you won’t want to put it down, either.

Great book! 4/5 stars!

Ms. Farrell has created is gritty, raw, action-packed and fascinating dystopian novel. It is well written with an interesting plot, characters that are easy to relate to, and has plenty of witty dialog.

Bait kept me turning pages late into the night. I was sucked right into the story and loved the main character, Jackie. She has some tough choices to make concerning her gang of boys while trying to grow up and learn how to love in a desperate world.

If you like YA/NA & dystopian, I highly recommend this book!

After an epidemic strikes almost every woman in the world dies. The boys that she rescued years earlier and has come to love as her family are the only ones who know that the boy Jack is actually a girl named Jackie.

This is the story of Jack and her little band of warriors trying to survive a plague that has become sentient. And Jack is in her crosshairs. Along with most of the male population.

I enjoyed the writing style of the author. Not only was the story believable but it flowed easily. I was left wanting more.

I don't usually read "end of the world as we know it" books, but this one seemed interesting so I thought why not give it a try. I'm glad I did. The story hooked me from very early on. I liked the character development, the plot, and the twists. Not entirely sure I liked how the book ended, but it is the first in a series so I understand why it ended the way that it did. I'll probably have to ready book 2 just to see what happens in the next adventure.

Go for the Bait!

Bait is thrilling adventure with non-stop action. The main character, Jackie, brings the reader into her crew and shows what she will do to protect her own. As I tweeted when I started Bait, I was even sneaking off for "bathroom breaks" at the office so I could continue the thrill ride. Read it!

I had trouble reading this book

Very hard to follow. I just couldn't get into this book. I tried given all the great reviews. Far fetched plot in my opinion. The characters in one instance spoke like kids thrown into chaos at the age of 10 or 11 and I in other instances used huge words. Not for me.

Was given book for a honest review. Spoilers in review

I really liked the overall story but the romantic aspect didn't work for me. I just didn't feel a connection between Jack and Dakota and the added admirers. I think that one of the things that bothered me the most was the way Jack handled the other guys who wanted to be with her. Maybe their actions were due to age.
