Jasper Ridley was a British writer, known for historical biographies. He was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford, and the Sorbonne. He trained and practiced as a barrister, before starting to write. During World War II, he was a conscientious objector and was, by his own account, violently abused while in a detention camp. He served on St Pancras Borough Council from 1945 to 1949, and stood, unsuccessfully, as Labour Party candidate for Winchester in 1955 general election.
Ridley manages to deliver a wonderful work on Tito, one of the most prominent political leaders of the 20th Century. The book is never boring, maybe because Tito's life is far from being boring, but also because it is adequately conveyed. All of the information given about different people that at some point got involved in Tito's life is extremely valuable.
Biografia del lider yugoslavo de origen croata y sus lucha por mantener su pais unido a pesar de las diferencias y violencia etnico-racial y religiosa que desembocaron en la guerra de los balcanes en los 90.
The scope of events this Croatian peasant not only was immersed in but thrived in spans the greatest events of Europe in the 20th century. Somehow he seems to be thrust into the center of an array of deadly, dramatic situations, both small and large, and survives. A player in WWII and the Cold War who is not nearly looked at enough.
Also provides a great view of the complex politics behind the iron curtain and the difficult position the smaller countries found themselves in when being dominated by the struggle between the US and the Soviet Union.
Narrative really moves along and is very engaging. Chapters divided nicely into one sitting each.
Look forward to checking out more from this author.
As with any Jasper Ridley book, the writing and the narrative is easy to read. However, I would have preferred that the author cover more extensively the years that Tito governed Yugoslavia, including his relations with other communist leaders in the USSR, China and Albania
"Looking back, people appreciate the days when Josip Broz Tito ruled from Belgrade, and it was said that Yugoslavia had six republics, five nations, four languages, three religions, two alphabets, and one party."
